Mediocre movies (that I rated 4 or 5 out of 10 stars) with explanations.

These movies were watchable and had their perks, but I can't personally recommend them to anyone.

1. The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie (2004)

PG | 87 min | Animation, Adventure, Comedy

67 Metascore

SpongeBob takes leave from Bikini Bottom in order to track down, with Patrick, King Neptune's stolen crown.

Directors: Stephen Hillenburg, Mark Osborne | Stars: Tom Kenny, Jeffrey Tambor, Rodger Bumpass, Carolyn Lawrence

Votes: 102,171 | Gross: $85.42M

A little disappointing, considering how great the show was. The plot was thin, the new characters were annoying, and musical number was more bizarre than entertaining. I also thought Spongebob's label as a "kid" was unusual considering he was portrayed as a young adult in the show. The middle of the movie was solid, and I did like the assassin character.

2. The Santa Clause (1994)

PG | 97 min | Comedy, Drama, Family

57 Metascore

When a man inadvertently makes Santa fall off his roof on Christmas Eve, he finds himself magically recruited to take his place.

Director: John Pasquin | Stars: Tim Allen, Judge Reinhold, Wendy Crewson, Eric Lloyd

Votes: 133,456 | Gross: $144.83M

By Tim Allen Christmas movies, this is a masterpiece of storytelling. By any other standard, this is an average to slightly below average flick with few laughs and many plot holes. The direction is adequate and seeing an ordinary man assume the position of Santa Claus was interesting.

3. The Master of Disguise (2002)

PG | 80 min | Adventure, Comedy, Family

12 Metascore

An Italian waiter fights off a criminal mastermind with his inherited powers of disguise.

Director: Perry Andelin Blake | Stars: Dana Carvey, Jennifer Esposito, Harold Gould, James Brolin

Votes: 27,287 | Gross: $40.36M

Haven't seen this since I was a kid, but I didn't really like it then. I did get a few laughs at the beginning though. Mediocre, but perhaps not as awful as everyone says.

4. Stuart Little (1999)

PG | 84 min | Adventure, Comedy, Family

61 Metascore

The Little family adopt a charming young mouse named Stuart, but the family cat wants rid of him.

Director: Rob Minkoff | Stars: Michael J. Fox, Geena Davis, Hugh Laurie, Jonathan Lipnicki

Votes: 149,149 | Gross: $140.04M

Boring characters, virtually no humor, and a plot without significant tension until the end hurt this film badly. I will say that Lipnicki (sic?) was a passable child actor and the CGI was well done. I also liked the way the characters -- even the mouse himself -- were developed. Actual care was put into making us care about the characters (even though they were stale), but in the end this film was just too flawed to warrant a rewatch.

5. 101 Dalmatians (1996)

G | 103 min | Adventure, Comedy, Crime

50 Metascore

An evil high-fashion designer plots to steal dalmatian puppies in order to make an extravagant fur coat but creates an extravagant mess instead.

Director: Stephen Herek | Stars: Glenn Close, Jeff Daniels, Joely Richardson, Joan Plowright

Votes: 117,614 | Gross: $136.19M

I love Glenn Close, but the plot didn't translate well to the big-screen. A plot with that many exotic dogs in it should be left to animators. Perhaps Pixar could have done something with this story. As it is, the plot is played straight, but the movie itself is too bizarre to be taken seriously. Not much humor to be found here either.

6. Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (2005)

PG | 115 min | Adventure, Comedy, Family

72 Metascore

Charlie, a young boy from an impoverished family, and four other kids win a tour of an amazing chocolate factory run by an imaginative chocolatier, Willy Wonka, and his staff of Oompa-Loompas.

Director: Tim Burton | Stars: Johnny Depp, Freddie Highmore, David Kelly, Helena Bonham Carter

Votes: 529,610 | Gross: $206.46M

Not a fan. The book was darker and focused more on Charlie than Willie Wonka himself. The first film, though not perfect, captured this while the remake didn't. Depp's design was also really off-putting for me. I also didn't find the renovated oompa loompa's necessary. I did like most of the actors here and some of the effects (like the blueberry transformation scene) were cool.

7. Iron Man 2 (2010)

PG-13 | 124 min | Action, Sci-Fi

57 Metascore

With the world now aware of his identity as Iron Man, Tony Stark must contend with both his declining health and a vengeful mad man with ties to his father's legacy.

Director: Jon Favreau | Stars: Robert Downey Jr., Mickey Rourke, Gwyneth Paltrow, Don Cheadle

Votes: 869,125 | Gross: $312.43M

Not a big fan of this installment. The villain had the potential to be awesome, but his backstory wasn't well developed enough. This movie pulled no punches and was predictable from start to finish. Downey didn't have any memorable quotes either. Overall, a very forgettable (though respectable) superhero movie.

8. Hop (2011)

PG | 95 min | Animation, Adventure, Comedy

41 Metascore

E.B., the Easter Bunny's teenage son, heads to Hollywood, determined to become a drummer in a rock 'n' roll band. In LA, he's taken in by Fred after the out-of-work slacker hits E.B. with his car.

Director: Tim Hill | Stars: Russell Brand, James Marsden, Elizabeth Perkins, Kaley Cuoco

Votes: 37,335 | Gross: $108.09M

It was actually slightly better than I expected, but still wasn't very good. They gave almost all the humorous lines (and interesting character traits) to the rabbit while the human protagonist was boring as hell. The villain wasn't interesting in the slightest and his motivation, though well-explained, was weak. The visuals were excellent and there were some decent lines (from the rabbit only).

9. Spy Kids 3: Game Over (2003)

PG | 84 min | Action, Adventure, Comedy

57 Metascore

Carmen's caught in a virtual reality game designed by the Kids' new nemesis, the Toymaker. It's up to Juni to save his sister, and ultimately the world.

Director: Robert Rodriguez | Stars: Daryl Sabara, Alexa PenaVega, Antonio Banderas, Carla Gugino

Votes: 66,298 | Gross: $111.76M

Not nearly enough character development. I also found Stallone and Clooney's presence more off-putting than anything, because their characters were essentially cameos rather than legitimate characters. They weren't required to act. The child acting, apart from the redhead lead, was abysmal. The plot itself was interesting enough to make it watchable, but this movie had the potential to actually be good. It fell short of my expectations.

10. Lake Placid (1999)

R | 82 min | Action, Comedy, Horror

34 Metascore

Four people attempt to stop a gigantic crocodile, who is terrorizing residents in Black Lake, Maine.

Director: Steve Miner | Stars: Bridget Fonda, Bill Pullman, Oliver Platt, Brendan Gleeson

Votes: 65,591 | Gross: $31.77M

The effects (particularly the severed head found on the ground in the middle of the movie) were hysterically awful. The attacks themselves were not suspenseful, not were they well-shot. I did like the dark humor in this movie and the ending was both bold and pussified at the same time. I actually liked it.

11. Pokémon: The First Movie - Mewtwo Strikes Back (1998)

G | 96 min | Animation, Action, Adventure

35 Metascore

Scientists genetically create a new Pokémon, Mewtwo, but the results are horrific and disastrous.

Director: Kunihiko Yuyama | Stars: Veronica Taylor, Rachael Lillis, Eric Stuart, Rica Matsumoto

Votes: 46,083 | Gross: $85.74M

The action was actually really good and I liked Team Rocket, but the children themselves were friggin bland as hell. Overall, it was like the show: watchable and addictive, but not terribly engaging and aimed only for younger kids.

12. Men in Black II (2002)

PG-13 | 88 min | Action, Adventure, Comedy

49 Metascore

Agent J is sent to find Agent K and restore his memory after the re-appearance of a case from K's past.

Director: Barry Sonnenfeld | Stars: Tommy Lee Jones, Will Smith, Rip Torn, Lara Flynn Boyle

Votes: 403,969 | Gross: $190.42M

Another movie I saw as a kid, and another one that I didn't particularly care for. It was too short and the villain sucked. It also lacked the spirit of the original. Still, it had terrific acting and an adequate enough plot to be just barely watchable.

13. Toy Story 2 (1999)

G | 92 min | Animation, Adventure, Comedy

88 Metascore

When Woody is stolen by a toy collector, Buzz and his friends set out on a rescue mission to save Woody before he becomes a museum toy property with his roundup gang Jessie, Prospector, and Bullseye.

Directors: John Lasseter, Ash Brannon, Lee Unkrich | Stars: Tom Hanks, Tim Allen, Joan Cusack, Kelsey Grammer

Votes: 620,145 | Gross: $245.85M

I love pixar, love Toy Story 3 and liked the first toy story. This one didn't do anything for me though. Andy's presence was sorely missed, and the situation the toys found themselves in didn't lead to any engaging dialogue or funny humor. In Toy Story 3, interesting villains and great one-liners saved the movie from getting stale. In this movie, those qualities were lacking, and the movie lags because of it. This isn't a bad movie by any stretch of the imagination, but I consider it to be the weakest of the three toy stories by a sizable margin.

14. How the Grinch Stole Christmas (2000)

PG | 104 min | Comedy, Family, Fantasy

46 Metascore

On the outskirts of Whoville lives a green, revenge-seeking Grinch who plans to ruin Christmas for all of the citizens of the town.

Director: Ron Howard | Stars: Jim Carrey, Taylor Momsen, Kelley, Jeffrey Tambor

Votes: 291,631 | Gross: $260.04M

The visuals were nice, but this lacked heart. Some of the humor was good; most of it was not. The bottom line is, huge Jim Carrey fans may like this, but those who either dislike him or are ambivalent towards him (like me) can find better Christmas movies to watch during the holidays. I don't hate it though.

15. Kindergarten Cop (1990)

PG-13 | 111 min | Action, Comedy, Crime

61 Metascore

A tough cop must pose as a kindergarten teacher in order to locate a dangerous criminal's ex-wife, who may hold the key to putting him behind bars.

Director: Ivan Reitman | Stars: Arnold Schwarzenegger, Penelope Ann Miller, Pamela Reed, Linda Hunt

Votes: 162,809 | Gross: $91.46M

Way too serious and dark, considering this was a governator movie featuring kindergarteners. The movie unraveled in the 2nd half. A joyless experience, but even though I dislike it, I admit it isn't bad filmmaking and (generally) accomplishes what it sets out to do. I'm just not convinced that what it set out to do was worthy of a movie.
