1. Roma (2018)
R | 135 min | Drama
A year in the life of a middle-class family's maid in Mexico City in the early 1970s.
Director: Alfonso Cuarón | Stars: Yalitza Aparicio, Marina de Tavira, Diego Cortina Autrey, Carlos Peralta
Votes: 169,839
“Roma” is not so much a story as a window: a window to a time, place, culture, conflict, and humanity that is at once incredibly realistic as well as incredibly cinematic. This is the movie of 2018 that I can most confidently call a work of art.
2. Black Panther (2018)
PG-13 | 134 min | Action, Adventure, Sci-Fi
T'Challa, heir to the hidden but advanced kingdom of Wakanda, must step forward to lead his people into a new future and must confront a challenger from his country's past.
Director: Ryan Coogler | Stars: Chadwick Boseman, Michael B. Jordan, Lupita Nyong'o, Danai Gurira
Votes: 837,831 | Gross: $700.06M
I waited two years for this movie, and it exceeded my expectations. It immerses you in a culture, it makes you care about its villain and see both sides of an argument, and it elevates its genre and studio to more than just popcorn entertainment. For most of the year, this was my favorite movie of 2018. #BlackPantherSoLit
3. First Man (2018)
PG-13 | 141 min | Biography, Drama, History
A look at the life of the astronaut, Neil Armstrong, and the legendary space mission that led him to become the first man to walk on the Moon on July 20, 1969.
Director: Damien Chazelle | Stars: Ryan Gosling, Claire Foy, Jason Clarke, Kyle Chandler
Votes: 202,306 | Gross: $44.94M
I’m a proponent for this movie not only because it was unfairly rejected by audiences for either being too political or not political enough, but also because it’s a stunning technical achievement. It’s like you’re watching authentic home movies shot in space, not just on Earth. If you missed “First Man” in theaters, I encourage you to give it a chance.
4. The Rider (2017)
R | 104 min | Drama, Western
After suffering a near fatal head injury, a young cowboy undertakes a search for new identity and what it means to be a man in the heartland of America.
Director: Chloé Zhao | Stars: Brady Jandreau, Mooney, Tim Jandreau, Lilly Jandreau
Votes: 20,638 | Gross: $2.42M
This modern Western takes the documentary-like production and acting styles of “Leave No Trace” and tells a mostly true story starring real people playing versions of themselves. And you honestly forget you’re watching a narrative film. Chloe Zhao is a director to watch.
5. Leave No Trace (2018)
PG | 109 min | Adventure, Drama
A father and his seventeen-year-old daughter are living an ideal existence in a vast urban park in Portland, Oregon when a small mistake derails their lives forever.
Director: Debra Granik | Stars: Thomasin McKenzie, Ben Foster, Jeffery Rifflard, Derek John Drescher
Votes: 65,293 | Gross: $6.05M
The kind of rare narrative film that feels so real that it could very well be mistaken for a documentary hybrid, thanks to subtle visual storytelling and grounded performances.
6. A Quiet Place (2018)
PG-13 | 90 min | Drama, Horror, Sci-Fi
A family struggles for survival in a world where most humans have been killed by blind but noise-sensitive creatures. They are forced to communicate in sign language to keep the creatures at bay.
Director: John Krasinski | Stars: Emily Blunt, John Krasinski, Millicent Simmonds, Noah Jupe
Votes: 583,783 | Gross: $188.02M
Props to these filmmakers for trusting their audience to shut up and come along for a nearly silent familial drama disguised as a horror film. I usually don’t seek out this genre, but I’m glad I did this time.
7. Eighth Grade (2018)
R | 93 min | Comedy, Drama
An introverted teenage girl tries to survive the last week of her disastrous eighth grade year before leaving to start high school.
Director: Bo Burnham | Stars: Elsie Fisher, Josh Hamilton, Emily Robinson, Jake Ryan
Votes: 82,496 | Gross: $13.54M
A beautiful coming-of-age film that accurately captures the current era to the point that it may very well become a time capsule decades from now. Plus, the electronic musical score is incredibly underrated in my opinion.
8. First Reformed (2017)
R | 113 min | Drama, Mystery, Thriller
A minister of a small congregation in upstate New York grapples with mounting despair brought on by tragedy, worldly concerns and a tormented past.
Director: Paul Schrader | Stars: Ethan Hawke, Amanda Seyfried, Cedric The Entertainer, Victoria Hill
Votes: 62,603 | Gross: $3.45M
Upon first viewing, I saw “First Reformed” basically as an updated remake of Bergman’s “Winter Light”. Then I saw it again and realized it truly stands on its own. How many films truly show the inner struggle of a Christian man who wants desperately to die? It’s complex, it’s compelling, and it ranks among this decade’s best films about faith.
9. Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse (2018)
PG | 117 min | Animation, Action, Adventure
Teen Miles Morales becomes the Spider-Man of his universe and must join with five spider-powered individuals from other dimensions to stop a threat for all realities.
Directors: Bob Persichetti, Peter Ramsey, Rodney Rothman | Stars: Shameik Moore, Jake Johnson, Hailee Steinfeld, Mahershala Ali
Votes: 671,944 | Gross: $190.24M
An immensely entertaining comic book movie, animation, and even satire (sort of), made even more satisfying with cathartic themes of characters believing they’re the only ones who have struggled the way that they have. Best animated film of the year by quite some distance.
10. A Star Is Born (2018)
R | 136 min | Drama, Music, Romance
A musician helps a young singer find fame as age and alcoholism send his own career into a downward spiral.
Director: Bradley Cooper | Stars: Lady Gaga, Bradley Cooper, Sam Elliott, Greg Grunberg
Votes: 419,521 | Gross: $215.29M
A movie so realistic and raw that you forget that it’s technically a musical. At least I did—and I’d say it’s one of the best musicals this century.
11. Widows (2018)
R | 129 min | Crime, Drama, Thriller
Four women with nothing in common except a debt left behind by their dead husbands' criminal activities take fate into their own hands and conspire to forge a future on their own terms.
Director: Steve McQueen | Stars: Viola Davis, Michelle Rodriguez, Elizabeth Debicki
Votes: 104,146 | Gross: $42.40M
A heist thriller with not only several good twists and turns, but also a lot to say about gender, race, class, and grief. Enjoyable on many levels.
12. Can You Ever Forgive Me? (2018)
R | 106 min | Biography, Comedy, Crime
When Lee Israel falls out of step with current tastes, she turns her art form to deception.
Director: Marielle Heller | Stars: Melissa McCarthy, Richard E. Grant, Dolly Wells, Ben Falcone
Votes: 56,174 | Gross: $8.80M
A smart, empathetic script and Melissa McCarthy’s best performance make this a compelling dramedy about the struggle between derivative versus original creativity.
13. You Were Never Really Here (2017)
R | 89 min | Crime, Drama, Thriller
A traumatized veteran unafraid of violence tracks down missing girls for a living. When a job spins out of control, Joe's nightmares overtake him as a conspiracy is uncovered leading to what could be his death trip or his awakening.
Director: Lynne Ramsay | Stars: Joaquin Phoenix, Judith Roberts, Ekaterina Samsonov, John Doman
Votes: 127,692 | Gross: $2.53M
This is the only movie I can think of that can be called both “fast-paced” and a “slow burn”. How does that work? Who cares; this is a great thriller.
14. The Favourite (2018)
R | 119 min | Biography, Comedy, Drama
In early 18th-century England, the status quo at the court is upset when a new servant arrives and endears herself to a frail Queen Anne.
Director: Yorgos Lanthimos | Stars: Olivia Colman, Emma Stone, Rachel Weisz, Nicholas Hoult
Votes: 233,648 | Gross: $34.37M
Ranks right up there with “Barry Lyndon” and “Amadeus” as an incredibly entertaining period piece with a contemporary edge and commentary. Also, the first Lanthimos film that I actually thoroughly enjoyed.
15. Mission: Impossible - Fallout (2018)
PG-13 | 147 min | Action, Adventure, Thriller
Ethan Hunt and his IMF team, along with some familiar allies, race against time after a mission gone wrong.
Director: Christopher McQuarrie | Stars: Tom Cruise, Henry Cavill, Ving Rhames, Simon Pegg

An action movie that knows when to shut up and show you some cool stunts and visuals. What a thrilling experience.

17. Paddington 2 (2017)
PG | 103 min | Adventure, Comedy, Family
Paddington, now happily settled with the Brown family and a popular member of the local community, picks up a series of odd jobs to buy the perfect present for his Aunt Lucy's 100th birthday, only for the gift to be stolen.
Director: Paul King | Stars: Ben Whishaw, Hugh Grant, Hugh Bonneville, Sally Hawkins
Votes: 94,041 | Gross: $40.44M
Not only did this turn out to be surprisingly charming and funny, just like its predecessor, but I’d go as far as to say that this is the best prison film of the decade. (Don’t know what I’m talking about? See the movie.)
18. Won't You Be My Neighbor? (2018)
PG-13 | 95 min | Documentary, Biography, History
An exploration of the life, lessons, and legacy of iconic children's television host Fred Rogers.
Director: Morgan Neville | Stars: Fred Rogers, Margaret Whitmer, Tom Junod, Joanne Rogers
Votes: 27,122 | Gross: $22.84M
There’s nothing necessarily groundbreaking about the way this documentary is made or how the story is told. But darn if it doesn’t just warm your heart.

R | 99 min | Documentary, History, War

Director: Peter Farrelly | Stars: Viggo Mortensen, Mahershala Ali, Linda Cardellini, Sebastian Maniscalco
Votes: 572,541 | Gross: $85.08M
Sure, the premise and message of this film are nothing new. But the film also knows when to shut up, let the actors act, and quietly convey visual storytelling.
22. The Death of Stalin (2017)
R | 107 min | Comedy, Drama, History
Moscow, 1953. After being in power for nearly 30 years, Soviet dictator, Joseph Vissarionovich Stalin, takes ill and quickly dies. Now the members of the Council of Ministers scramble for power.
Director: Armando Iannucci | Stars: Steve Buscemi, Simon Russell Beale, Jeffrey Tambor, Andrea Riseborough
Votes: 113,481 | Gross: $8.05M
It’s a farce, but it’s an historical farce—many of the film’s plot points that I assumed were just exaggerations were actually true. Which makes the film even more absurdly funny than it would have been if this had been all fiction.
23. The Old Man & the Gun (2018)
PG-13 | 93 min | Biography, Comedy, Crime
Based on the true story of Forrest Tucker and his audacious escape from San Quentin at the age of 70 to an unprecedented string of heists that confounded authorities and enchanted the public.
Director: David Lowery | Stars: Robert Redford, Casey Affleck, Sissy Spacek, Danny Glover
Votes: 49,620 | Gross: $11.28M
It’s rare as well as difficult to make a period film, regardless of the time period, decades later and make the film look, sound, and feel like it was made in that period. But this film does it, which means it’s completely engaging, entertaining, and real.
24. American Animals (2018)

Director: Bart Layton | Stars: Spencer Reinhard, Warren Lipka, Eric Borsuk, Chas Allen
Votes: 49,365 | Gross: $2.86M
I’ve seen documentary/narrative hybrids before, but few that were as entertaining as this was. It would be cool to see more movies like it—or even to make one!

Votes: 168,257
The Coen brothers are in true form here, with an anthology film featuring stories that are both entertaining comedies as well as serious contemplations on the fragility of life. Just what I’ve come to expect from these filmmakers.

Votes: 39,795 | Gross: $12.32M
I’m a bigger fan of documentaries like “Free Solo” that portray true events as they’re happening, rather than films like this where a bunch of people are recounting past events. However, when the story is an incredible and compelling as this, you have to admit: it’s a darn good film.
