1. Dunkirk (2017)
PG-13 | 106 min | Action, Drama, History
Allied soldiers from Belgium, the British Commonwealth and Empire, and France are surrounded by the German Army and evacuated during a fierce battle in World War II.
Director: Christopher Nolan | Stars: Fionn Whitehead, Barry Keoghan, Mark Rylance, Tom Hardy
Votes: 740,377 | Gross: $188.37M
I was very hesitant to put this at the top of my list so as not to be seen as a Christopher Nolan fanboy (which I definitely am). But truly, no other film in 2017 has stuck with me as much as Dunkirk, which ends up being simultaneously formalistic and realistic. The lack of dialogue/character revelation, the ambient yet suspenseful score, the cross-cutting between timelines until they finally converge, and the large-format film capturing even the most minuscule details: these are all techniques that define cinema, yet they work together to place you in the moment, in the mindset of the men in this event. It’s the best war film (and Nolan film) in years, and I’d love to see more like it coming from major studios in the future.
2. Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri (2017)
R | 115 min | Comedy, Crime, Drama
A mother personally challenges the local authorities to solve her daughter's murder when they fail to catch the culprit.
Director: Martin McDonagh | Stars: Frances McDormand, Woody Harrelson, Sam Rockwell, Caleb Landry Jones
Votes: 555,222 | Gross: $54.51M
The goal of every character in Three Billboards is just to do something right for a change—there’s humor in that premise, but there’s also serious drama in that premise, and the film conveys both beautifully. If this is indeed a black comedy, it’s the first one ever to give me a lump in my throat.
3. Lady Bird (2017)
R | 94 min | Comedy, Drama
In 2002, an artistically inclined 17-year-old girl comes of age in Sacramento, California.
Director: Greta Gerwig | Stars: Saoirse Ronan, Laurie Metcalf, Tracy Letts, Lucas Hedges
Votes: 329,207 | Gross: $48.96M
I still stand by my claim that Lady Bird is basically a high-school version of Frances Ha in terms of its tone, pacing, and coming-of-age narrative. However, Frances Ha is near-perfect, and so is this, so I can’t complain.
4. A Ghost Story (2017)
R | 92 min | Drama, Fantasy, Mystery
In this singular exploration of legacy, love, loss, and the enormity of existence, a recently deceased, white-sheeted ghost returns to his suburban home to try to reconnect with his bereft wife.
Director: David Lowery | Stars: Casey Affleck, Rooney Mara, McColm Cephas Jr., Kenneisha Thompson
Votes: 79,670 | Gross: $1.60M
Quite possibly the riskiest film of the year, and it paid off. Not since The Tree of Life have I seen a movie that contemplated the afterlife with such depth and artistry.
5. War for the Planet of the Apes (2017)
PG-13 | 140 min | Action, Adventure, Drama
After the apes suffer unimaginable losses, Caesar wrestles with his darker instincts and begins his own mythic quest to avenge his kind.
Director: Matt Reeves | Stars: Andy Serkis, Woody Harrelson, Steve Zahn, Karin Konoval
Votes: 283,458 | Gross: $146.88M
I never expected to call these prequel-sequels innovative, but that’s exactly what this film and its predecessor are—not just for their groundbreaking effects, but also for their commitment to strong visual storytelling.
6. Blade Runner 2049 (2017)
R | 164 min | Action, Drama, Mystery
Young Blade Runner K's discovery of a long-buried secret leads him to track down former Blade Runner Rick Deckard, who's been missing for thirty years.
Director: Denis Villeneuve | Stars: Harrison Ford, Ryan Gosling, Ana de Armas, Dave Bautista
Votes: 665,598 | Gross: $92.05M
A solid sequel to a sci-fi classic, but also a solid standalone film about identity and sacrifice. Villeneuve, you’ve done it again.
7. Get Out (I) (2017)
R | 104 min | Horror, Mystery, Thriller
A young African-American visits his white girlfriend's parents for the weekend, where his simmering uneasiness about their reception of him eventually reaches a boiling point.
Director: Jordan Peele | Stars: Daniel Kaluuya, Allison Williams, Bradley Whitford, Catherine Keener
Votes: 697,268 | Gross: $176.04M
The horror/thriller genre has never been a favorite of mine, but Get Out transcends genre conventions and becomes one of the most original films in years.
8. Phantom Thread (2017)
R | 130 min | Drama, Romance
Set in 1950s London, Reynolds Woodcock is a renowned dressmaker whose fastidious life is disrupted by a young, strong-willed woman, Alma, who becomes his muse and lover.
Director: Paul Thomas Anderson | Stars: Vicky Krieps, Daniel Day-Lewis, Lesley Manville, Julie Vollono
Votes: 145,563 | Gross: $21.02M
9. The Big Sick (2017)
R | 120 min | Comedy, Drama, Romance
Pakistan-born comedian Kumail Nanjiani and grad student Emily Gardner fall in love but struggle as their cultures clash. When Emily contracts a mysterious illness, Kumail finds himself forced to face her feisty parents, his family's expectations, and his true feelings.
Director: Michael Showalter | Stars: Kumail Nanjiani, Zoe Kazan, Holly Hunter, Ray Romano
Votes: 143,614 | Gross: $42.87M
Often there are films that tell stories so similar to those of their filmmakers that they can be considered autobiographical. But The Big Sick actually is, and it’s so personal, entertaining, and compelling, that it’s irresistible.
10. The Disaster Artist (2017)
R | 104 min | Biography, Comedy, Drama
When aspiring actor Greg Sestero meets the weird and mysterious Tommy Wiseau in an acting class, they form a unique friendship and travel to Hollywood to make their dreams come true.
Director: James Franco | Stars: James Franco, Dave Franco, Ari Graynor, Seth Rogen
Votes: 164,293 | Gross: $21.12M
The story of Tommy Wiseau and the making of The Room sounds like a joke until you realize it sure isn’t one. The Disaster Artist treats the story as such, and it’s one of my favorite comedies of the last few years.
11. Coco (I) (2017)
PG | 105 min | Animation, Adventure, Drama
Aspiring musician Miguel, confronted with his family's ancestral ban on music, enters the Land of the Dead to find his great-great-grandfather, a legendary singer.
Directors: Lee Unkrich, Adrian Molina | Stars: Anthony Gonzalez, Gael García Bernal, Benjamin Bratt, Alanna Ubach
Votes: 590,770 | Gross: $209.73M
Not only a breathtaking look at a beautiful culture, but also a universal story about family and heritage. Thanks for making an original movie again, Pixar.
12. Baby Driver (2017)
R | 113 min | Action, Crime, Drama
After being coerced into working for a crime boss, a young getaway driver finds himself taking part in a heist doomed to fail.
Director: Edgar Wright | Stars: Ansel Elgort, Jon Bernthal, Jon Hamm, Eiza González
Votes: 611,369 | Gross: $107.83M
An action movie so entertaining that you forget how carefully every single sequence had to be planned out ahead of time to the music.
13. Wonderstruck (2017)
PG | 116 min | Adventure, Drama, Mystery
Tells the tale of two children separated by fifty years. In 1927, Rose searches for the actress whose life she chronicles in her scrapbook; in 1977, Ben runs away from home to find his father.
Director: Todd Haynes | Stars: Oakes Fegley, Julianne Moore, Michelle Williams, Millicent Simmonds
Votes: 11,082 | Gross: $1.03M
How come so many critics have overlooked this movie? Sure, the parallel stories take a little while to seem relevant to each other, but once they do, this film is really moving.
14. I, Tonya (2017)

Director: Matthew Heineman | Stars: Abdelaziz Alhamza, Mohamad Almusari, Hamoud Almousa, Abu Bakr Al-Baghdadi
Votes: 4,127 | Gross: $0.13M
Putting names and faces to those fighting against ISIS on the other side of the world, City of Ghosts is the finest documentary I saw this year.

Director: Joe Wright | Stars: Gary Oldman, Lily James, Kristin Scott Thomas, Ben Mendelsohn
Votes: 220,853 | Gross: $56.47M
A by-the-numbers biopic can still be fun to watch, and this one certainly is. Gary Oldman disappears into the role of Winston Churchill.

This film not only helped me follow the game of poker (even at a really fast pace) but also helped me empathize with its characters. Incredibly entertaining.

Director: Rian Johnson | Stars: Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher
Votes: 672,162 | Gross: $620.18M
This movie to me is ultimately about letting go of your memories of the past and expectations for the future—which means that the choices to divert from traditional Star Wars mythology are, to me, completely justified. Yeah, I said it; come at me, bro.
21. The Lost City of Z (2016)
