1. Atlas Shrugged: Part I (2011)

PG-13 | 97 min | Drama, Mystery, Sci-Fi

28 Metascore

Railroad executive Dagny Taggart and steel mogul Henry Rearden form an alliance to fight the increasingly authoritarian government of the United States.

Director: Paul Johansson | Stars: Taylor Schilling, Grant Bowler, Matthew Marsden, Edi Gathegi

Votes: 14,320 | Gross: $4.75M

I didn't realize so many reviews for this film would be politically charged. I personally enjoyed it. I thought the cast was excellent. Although this film is a fantasy the topic it deals with is entirely plausible. A government encroaching upon our rights one by one until they are in total control. Very interesting film. I have started to watch the sequel but turned it off pretty quickly. Not nearly as well made, and the cast is awful. I will give it another go at another time, or I might just have to read the books to find out the answer to the ever burning question, who is John Galt?

2. Stoker (2013)

R | 99 min | Drama, Thriller

58 Metascore

After India's father dies, her Uncle Charlie, who she never knew existed, comes to live with her and her unstable mother. She comes to suspect this mysterious, charming man has ulterior motives and becomes increasingly infatuated with him.

Director: Park Chan-wook | Stars: Mia Wasikowska, Nicole Kidman, Matthew Goode, Dermot Mulroney

Votes: 114,539 | Gross: $1.70M

After India's father passes away tragically her estranged Uncle Charlie moves in. Slowly she begins to suspect something isn't right about him.

Stoker is Korean director Chan-wook Park's English language debut. If anyone is familiar with his work be prepared to be surprised. This isn't like anything you have seen Park make before. It is disturbing, but very subdued, in the most perfect way.

I enjoyed this film, it isn't your typical horror at all. So for fan's of the slasher splatters, this will come off as "f'ing weird" and confusing. I was also really surprised to see Wentworth Miller wrote it. So a thumbs up to him.

Stoker is paced slowly, but necessary and adds to the thick atmosphere. You become engrossed in the surroundings, and get a wonderful sense of each character. India, lonely and longing for her father while trying to come to terms with who she really is. Evelyn a sad and lonely woman who just lost her husband, and is now seemly isolated with a daughter that never truly lover her. Charlie is mysterious, and his cards aren't shown til the end of the film. I would hate it spoil it for you.

Mia Wasikowska does an excellent job portraying India, a very odd and complex young woman. She played the roll perfectly, I can't imagine another actress being able to give the character the depth that she did. India is extremely distant from the other characters in the beginning, and seems to observe all those around her, but never steps in. As she gradually awakens and becomes her true self she starts to interact more, and open herself to experiences. It was amazing to see the transformation of India. From a somber depressed girl missing her father, the only person she seemed to have a connection with. Then awakening as a woman and embracing who she truly is.

The liberation of India is the meat of this story, and where she ends up is nothing short of shocking.

3. Evil Dead (2013)

R | 91 min | Horror

57 Metascore

Five friends head to a remote cabin, where the discovery of a Book of the Dead leads them to unwittingly summon up demons living in the nearby woods.

Director: Fede Alvarez | Stars: Jane Levy, Shiloh Fernandez, Jessica Lucas, Lou Taylor Pucci

Votes: 197,276 | Gross: $54.24M

Remake of the cult classic by the same title. The plot is generally the same. Group of people go to a cabin in the middle of nowhere, find an evil book. Ignore the multiple warnings and read from said book anyway. Bad stuff happens.

I went into this expecting to be scared. It was advertised as being really scary, I heard good things about it. One day I will learn to lower my expectations to avoid disappointment....one of these days.

It isn't a bad movie. It is entertaining, the acting is pretty good. And there were humorous moments. To be honest the bits I found funny may not have been intentional, that doesn't really matter though. I am always torn when it comes to remakes. I don't expect, nor want a carbon copy. But I do expect certain aspects to remain the same. The original 'Evil Dead' has such a specific feel to it. It is scary, funny, and gory. Although the director tried to stay true to that in this version, it just didn't feel like 'Evil Dead'.

Jane Levy was amazing. When I heard she would be starring in this I was so excited, she was great as the original Mandy Malkovich on the US 'Shameless'...(still annoyed they recast her, but whatever). She was great in this, and honestly the only part of the movie that scared me.

The ending saved it for me, but I still couldn't bring myself to give it a better rating than a 6. I just don't think I will watch it again. I watched it twice to write this review. After the first time I wrote this up. Watched it the next night with some friends to see if I missed anything, maybe it was better than I originally thought...sadly it wasn't.

If you are a fan of the original, go ahead and see it. It won't ruin Sam Raimi's classic, if anything it will give you more appreciation for it.

Summary: Not scary enough, relies on gore too much. Great acting by Jane Levy. Ending was my favorite part, probably wouldn't have been if I didn't like the character Mia though.

4. 6 Souls (2010)

R | 112 min | Horror, Thriller

28 Metascore

A forensic psychiatrist discovers that all but one of her patient's multiple personalities are murder victims. She will have to find out what's happening before her time is finished.

Directors: Måns Mårlind, Björn Stein | Stars: Julianne Moore, Jonathan Rhys Meyers, Jeffrey DeMunn, Frances Conroy

Votes: 36,572

6 Souls follows the story of a forensic psychologist investigating a patient of her father's who appears to be suffering from multiple personality disorder. She sternly does not believe and tries to prove he is faking when she discovers his personalities are of murder victims.

This movie could have been better. It has an interesting premise, and an excellent cast. I love Jonathan Rhys Meyers. he is one of my favorite actors and never disappoints. He is excellent in this film as well, it isn't his fault it is a flop. I was trying to determine what I would rate this film, and had initially decided to give it a 7, which honestly is much higher than it deserves.

There are so many moments throughout this film when I just couldn't stand the idiocy. No way would this happen, no way would someone do that etc etc.

Its good for a late night if you can't find anything else to watch. It is currently streaming on Netflix (as of 7/4/13) so give it a try if you would like.

6/10 -- I even think that might be too generous, but I love J.R.M, so I'll give it a 6 just for him.

5. Cloud Atlas (2012)

R | 172 min | Drama, Mystery, Sci-Fi

55 Metascore

An exploration of how the actions of individual lives impact one another in the past, present and future, as one soul is shaped from a killer into a hero, and an act of kindness ripples across centuries to inspire a revolution.

Directors: Tom Tykwer, Lana Wachowski, Lilly Wachowski | Stars: Tom Hanks, Halle Berry, Hugh Grant, Hugo Weaving

Votes: 374,431 | Gross: $27.11M

Before writing my review I had to sit for a little while, and mull over what I had just seen. The film is beautiful. Not just visually, don't get me wrong, it is breathtaking to look at. But the heart of this film is gorgeous.

The story spans hundreds of years, and follows different souls throughout time. At the core this movie is a story of love, and perseverance. I took from this movie a message of hope. That you will be with whom you are suppose to be with, no matter what. You might not have them now, you may have missed an opportunity. But somewhere in your timeline your soul's will reconnect.

It is also a tale of people standing up and fighting for what they believe in, no matter the odds. There are some people born with an inner strength that helps them change the coarse of human history.

I highly suggest watching this film at least once. It is very rich, and has so many layers multiple viewings is ideal. It is long, but I didn't even notice. The story encompasses so much I was prepared for a long watch. So just a warning for new viewers, it is nearly 3 hours in length.

10/10
