1. The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug (2013)

PG-13 | 161 min | Adventure, Drama, Fantasy

66 Metascore

The dwarves, along with Bilbo Baggins and Gandalf the Grey, continue their quest to reclaim Erebor, their homeland, from Smaug. Bilbo Baggins is in possession of a mysterious and magical ring.

Director: Peter Jackson | Stars: Ian McKellen, Martin Freeman, Richard Armitage, Ken Stott

Votes: 705,180 | Gross: $258.37M

Absolutely fantastic choreography and ideas in the fight scene with the barrels. Even though the Necromancer's right hand man looked like an avatar I thought you could see the Orcs in the making, great make up. At one point I did think I was watching a Pirates/Caribbean film. Really loved this sequel but what did spoilt it was the end credits song, I didn't think it kept to the theme.

2. The Hunger Games (2012)

PG-13 | 142 min | Action, Adventure, Sci-Fi

68 Metascore

Katniss Everdeen voluntarily takes her younger sister's place in the Hunger Games: a televised competition in which two teenagers from each of the twelve Districts of Panem are chosen at random to fight to the death.

Director: Gary Ross | Stars: Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson, Liam Hemsworth, Stanley Tucci

Votes: 1,003,584 | Gross: $408.01M

Wasn't interested in the actual hunger games as it's all in Battle Royale but what a fantastic take on a society. To think that they can be that ignorant for so many years that the division is so uniquely spectacular in every way. That really has me curious to what happens. Also, I thought Lenny Kravitz's character was a beautiful one, so calm and parenting. I will have to read the books now.

3. Big Fish (2003)

PG-13 | 125 min | Adventure, Drama, Fantasy

58 Metascore

A frustrated son tries to determine the fact from fiction in his dying father's life.

Director: Tim Burton | Stars: Ewan McGregor, Albert Finney, Billy Crudup, Jessica Lange

Votes: 458,866 | Gross: $66.26M

This was a delightful film with colourful characters of one man's dream. Totally different to a usual Burton film but you can definitely recognise his work. To watch if you want to be taken off to a magical world.

4. The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey (2012)

PG-13 | 169 min | Adventure, Fantasy

58 Metascore

A reluctant Hobbit, Bilbo Baggins, sets out to the Lonely Mountain with a spirited group of dwarves to reclaim their mountain home, and the gold within it from the dragon Smaug.

Director: Peter Jackson | Stars: Martin Freeman, Ian McKellen, Richard Armitage, Andy Serkis

Votes: 872,924 | Gross: $303.00M

Nice transition from the Lord to this trilogy and I really didn't see how Jackson could make The Hobbit the book into a trilogy seeing how small it was (and in my eyes not the greatest of books), and this 1st part does prove it as there was a lot of info without real substance. The Necromancer had great expressions but I thought the creatures too comical. I'm a lover of riddles but I didn't really understand Gollum's as they were too drawn out. (Why does Gandalf always seem to arrive at the opportune moment and not use magic when needed? Is he limited?) Sets were Goliath and awesome as usual and great fight of the rocks. The home speech from Bilbo was nice. I liked the songs especially the Dwarves ones. All in all it was ok but it lacked something.

5. Star Trek Into Darkness (2013)

PG-13 | 132 min | Action, Adventure, Sci-Fi

72 Metascore

After the crew of the Enterprise find an unstoppable force of terror from within their own organization, Captain Kirk leads a manhunt to a war-zone world to capture a one-man weapon of mass destruction.

Director: J.J. Abrams | Stars: Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Zoe Saldana, Benedict Cumberbatch

Votes: 497,052 | Gross: $228.78M

I dunno, I wasn't overly impressed with this one but I put it down to the mood I was in. (I wasn't in a mood, I just really want to like it.) Of course I will watch again . . .

6. The Hunger Games: Catching Fire (2013)

PG-13 | 146 min | Action, Adventure, Sci-Fi

76 Metascore

Katniss Everdeen and Peeta Mellark become targets of the Capitol after their victory in the 74th Hunger Games sparks a rebellion in the Districts of Panem.

Director: Francis Lawrence | Stars: Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson, Liam Hemsworth, Philip Seymour Hoffman

Votes: 721,194 | Gross: $424.67M

And the plot thickens. Still the society is what interests me as not much more here but the politics, loved it anyway. Kravitz's character still rocks albeit in trouble now. Credits song very apt.

7. Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides (2011)

PG-13 | 136 min | Action, Adventure, Fantasy

45 Metascore

Jack Sparrow and Barbossa embark on a quest to find the elusive fountain of youth, only to discover that Blackbeard and his daughter are after it too.

Director: Rob Marshall | Stars: Johnny Depp, Penélope Cruz, Ian McShane, Geoffrey Rush

Votes: 564,056 | Gross: $241.06M

Good introduction to another great cast and plot. All round fun film but had no charm or wasn't as funny as the others, different director and with a total cast change may have added to that. The sirens were a good inclusion.

8. Jack the Giant Slayer (2013)

PG-13 | 114 min | Action, Adventure, Fantasy

51 Metascore

The ancient war between humans and a race of giants is reignited when Jack, a young farmhand fighting for a kingdom and the love of a princess, opens a gateway between the two worlds.

Director: Bryan Singer | Stars: Nicholas Hoult, Stanley Tucci, Ewan McGregor, Bill Nighy

Votes: 146,974 | Gross: $65.19M

A reverse take on the fable. The authenticity was a bit off cause I couldn't get into the Hault's (good on him) accent and the whole beanstalk bit happened too fast to be appreciated. The villain did have an air (heir, get it!) about him which was a good thing and there was a cool use of arrows and beans at the end. I did miss the Harp and Hen as that is the real fable but the director did take it a step further with the terra firma attack and a very cool crown ending. Enjoyed for what it was. It was aptly named.

9. John Carter (2012)

PG-13 | 132 min | Action, Adventure, Sci-Fi

51 Metascore

Transported to Barsoom, a Civil War vet discovers a barren planet seemingly inhabited by 12-foot tall barbarians. Finding himself prisoner of these creatures, he escapes, only to encounter Woola and a princess in desperate need of a savior.

Director: Andrew Stanton | Stars: Taylor Kitsch, Lynn Collins, Willem Dafoe, Samantha Morton

Votes: 286,187 | Gross: $73.08M

Didn't know what to expect but was thoroughly surprised and in the creativity of this movie. Okay so we may have seen this kinda thing before but the difference with this, to me, is that it worked. Definitely would watch it again. Total Like!!!

10. Mirror Mirror (I) (2012)

PG | 106 min | Adventure, Comedy, Drama

46 Metascore

An evil queen steals control of a kingdom and an exiled princess enlists the help of seven resourceful rebels to win back her birthright.

Director: Tarsem Singh | Stars: Lily Collins, Julia Roberts, Armie Hammer, Nathan Lane

Votes: 91,066 | Gross: $64.94M

Directed by and Indian guy, how refreshing. The idea of the giant dwarfs were cool, should have kept that up for a while longer and is it me or were they quite sexy? The queens beauty regime was great as were the ideas and the one liners. I did enjoy it as it had a bit of a quirk to it and I feel the dwarfs attitude really made the film. I loved the end credits sequence although I would have liked to have seen an Indian dance.

11. Tron (1982)

PG | 96 min | Action, Adventure, Sci-Fi

58 Metascore

A computer hacker is abducted into the digital world and forced to participate in gladiatorial games where his only chance of escape is with the help of a heroic security program.

Director: Steven Lisberger | Stars: Jeff Bridges, Bruce Boxleitner, David Warner, Cindy Morgan

Votes: 129,262 | Gross: $33.00M

The composition of real life to computer world was so innovative for this time and I think it's the only film I've seen where some of the scenes were very much like storyboards which kept in the theme of the story. Assembling, driving and the florescence gave it an edge and a nice restoration with the final fight.

12. Immortals (2011)

R | 110 min | Action, Drama, Fantasy

46 Metascore

Theseus is a mortal man chosen by Zeus to lead the fight against the ruthless King Hyperion, who is on a rampage across Greece to obtain a weapon that can destroy humanity.

Director: Tarsem Singh | Stars: Henry Cavill, Mickey Rourke, John Hurt, Stephen Dorff

Votes: 176,435 | Gross: $83.50M

It was okay. The battle of the Gods vs the Titans was good, well executed action and the contraception was indeed different, wow. But the whole point was the bow which we only got to see a little of, and that was a shame.

13. The Hole (2009)

PG-13 | 92 min | Fantasy, Thriller

57 Metascore

A pair of brothers stumble upon a mysterious hole in their basement that leads to the darkest corridors of their fears and nightmares.

Director: Joe Dante | Stars: Chris Massoglia, Haley Bennett, Nathan Gamble, Teri Polo

Votes: 24,255

Cool film and quite scary at some points for what it was. Nothing new but enjoyable nonetheless.

14. The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader (2010)

PG | 113 min | Adventure, Family, Fantasy

53 Metascore

Lucy and Edmund Pevensie return to Narnia with their cousin Eustace where they meet up with Prince Caspian for a trip across the sea aboard the royal ship The Dawn Treader. Along the way they encounter dragons, dwarves, merfolk, and a band of lost warriors before reaching the edge of the world.

Director: Michael Apted | Stars: Ben Barnes, Skandar Keynes, Georgie Henley, Will Poulter

Votes: 166,377 | Gross: $104.39M

Not very good and not the energy that the other films had. In enjoyed the film but thought this film not cohesive from scene to scene it just seemed too thrown together. It gets a pass because of Poulter's performance as Eustace, he totally stole the film.

15. 2012 (I) (2009)

PG-13 | 158 min | Action, Adventure, Sci-Fi

49 Metascore

A frustrated writer struggles to keep his family alive when a series of global catastrophes threatens to annihilate mankind.

Director: Roland Emmerich | Stars: John Cusack, Thandiwe Newton, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Amanda Peet

Votes: 397,814 | Gross: $166.11M

Harrelson is so varied of late, really cool. The Day Before Yesterday was with kids whereas this was the adults which was really the only difference. It was all ridiculously 'just in time' but the Russians made the film. It was all a bit too much. 1 man's greed could't persuade that many and for so long, I mean REALLY! I did like the direction it took towards the end even though it wasn't very good. Rubbish that the Russians were all killed, lost it's comic value. At least the end credits was good.

16. Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter (2012)

R | 105 min | Action, Fantasy, Horror

42 Metascore

Abraham Lincoln, the 16th President of the United States, discovers vampires are planning to take over the United States. He makes it his mission to eliminate them.

Director: Timur Bekmambetov | Stars: Benjamin Walker, Rufus Sewell, Dominic Cooper, Anthony Mackie

Votes: 161,640 | Gross: $37.52M

I mean, it was al right. Some of the action scenes, especially the last were pretty cool to watch but am still confused as to why Lincoln. Well it was a good watch, leave it at that.
