1. The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug (2013)

PG-13 | 161 min | Adventure, Drama, Fantasy

66 Metascore

The dwarves, along with Bilbo Baggins and Gandalf the Grey, continue their quest to reclaim Erebor, their homeland, from Smaug. Bilbo Baggins is in possession of a mysterious and magical ring.

Director: Peter Jackson | Stars: Ian McKellen, Martin Freeman, Richard Armitage, Ken Stott

Votes: 705,099 | Gross: $258.37M

Although the first film in the trilogy may have been a disappointment to many compared to LOTR: The Return of the King (Which is unfair on so many levels), it's box office return against cost so far is more than enough to gurantee that the second feature will bring along 'The Two towers' effect and surprise many for sure. Peter Jackson has certainly established himself as a hollywood heavy weight even though he has had his misses (The Lovely Bones and King Kong, although the latter still proved to be a box office success), so who knows what to expect when watching the second Hobbit film. One can only hope for the bar to be raised

2. Man of Steel (2013)

PG-13 | 143 min | Action, Adventure, Sci-Fi

55 Metascore

An alien child is evacuated from his dying world and sent to Earth to live among humans. His peace is threatened when other survivors of his home planet invade Earth.

Director: Zack Snyder | Stars: Henry Cavill, Amy Adams, Michael Shannon, Diane Lane

Votes: 811,729 | Gross: $291.05M

Zack Snyder knows a thing or two about visual spectacle. Take his first outing, Dawn of the Dead (Remake) and add his follow up, 300, then throw in his adaptation of Watchmen, and surely you can only imagine what a man of this stature can conjure up next. If Man of Steel followed shortly after his Watchmen, then expectations would still be relatively high; even though The Watchmen did have its mixed reviews. However, after filming the poorly received Sucker Punch, one can only start biting his/her finger nails.

Thankfully, the inclusion of producer, Christopher Nolan (Director: The Dark Knight Trilogy), Russell Crowe, Kevin Costner and a rugged, but sharp looking new Superman in Henry Cavill, Man of Steel looks very likely to attract a new generation of fans and should be sure to eclipse the latest Superman outing from Bryan Singer.

3. Elysium (I) (2013)

R | 109 min | Action, Drama, Sci-Fi

61 Metascore

In the year 2154, the very wealthy live on a man-made space station while the rest of the population resides on a ruined Earth. A man takes on a mission that could bring equality to the polarized worlds.

Director: Neill Blomkamp | Stars: Matt Damon, Jodie Foster, Sharlto Copley, Alice Braga

Votes: 470,979 | Gross: $93.05M

'Elysium' is Director Neil Blomkamp's sophomore film after the box office and critical success of District 9. With the lack of footage made available after Comic Con and no trailer, the anticipation for the new Matt damon Sci Fi action spectacle grows stronger as every day passes. However, with small doses of the plotline found online for fans of Blomkamp, the curiosity will drive fans in the masses to movie theatres during the opening weekend accounting for at least a third of its box office intake. What happens after the opening weekend is anyone's guess. But if it were judged on what Blomkamp could do with $30 million to film District 9, then my guess is that with a bigger budget, this film should safely pass the $100 million at the box office world wide after the 3rd weekend

4. Pacific Rim (2013)

PG-13 | 131 min | Action, Adventure, Sci-Fi

65 Metascore

As a war between humankind and monstrous sea creatures wages on, a former pilot and a trainee are paired up to drive a seemingly obsolete special weapon in a desperate effort to save the world from the apocalypse.

Director: Guillermo del Toro | Stars: Idris Elba, Charlie Hunnam, Rinko Kikuchi, Charlie Day

Votes: 530,704 | Gross: $101.80M

Del Toro knows how to make movies... Period! Whether fans can pursuade or convert their friends and family over to appreciate his brillance on the big screen is another story. But there's so much to look forward to with this one. After watching the trailer, you get the feeling of Deja Vu with glimpses of what almost feels like Godzilla in the middle of Japan. And man is it great to hear Idris Elba in his british accent delivering a great 'hype-up' speech before the action fills the screen for the remainder of the trailer. Some people may disagree, but I believe that the film will have enough pull overseas to push it past the $100 million.

I'll be taking as many people to this one for sure

5. Thor: The Dark World (2013)

PG-13 | 112 min | Action, Adventure, Fantasy

54 Metascore

When the Dark Elves attempt to plunge the universe into darkness, Thor must embark on a perilous and personal journey that will reunite him with doctor Jane Foster.

Director: Alan Taylor | Stars: Chris Hemsworth, Natalie Portman, Tom Hiddleston, Stellan Skarsgård

Votes: 724,870 | Gross: $206.36M

Which ever film comes first, this or Iron Man 3, will surely benefit from those suffering from 'The Avengers' withdrawls.

Marvel has turned the world of comic books into live action, fanboy heaven. Like every franchise in the world, it has suffered from the perils of heavy handed studio input in the past (F4 and F4: Rise of the Silver Surfer to name a few), but now that 'times-are-a-changing' and the fanboys that grew up reading and watching the comics that influenced them are now Men and Women.

Finding the right actor to play Thor was the main problem in the past. Now, with the right actor in tow along with the tools to create the perfect vision of fantasy, the only challenge this film faces now is, How to follow up Kenneth Branagh's very impressive film. After the success of The Avengers, any 'Avenger' coming out with their own film in the near future will surely aspire a few of the younger fans to create their own vision in the future. $100 million worldwide?.... you bet

6. Iron Man Three (2013)

PG-13 | 130 min | Action, Adventure, Sci-Fi

62 Metascore

When Tony Stark's world is torn apart by a formidable terrorist called the Mandarin, he starts an odyssey of rebuilding and retribution.

Director: Shane Black | Stars: Robert Downey Jr., Guy Pearce, Gwyneth Paltrow, Don Cheadle

Votes: 899,017 | Gross: $409.01M

Robert Downey Jnr, Jon Favreau, and Iron Man are without a shadow of a doubt the force behind Marvel's revival and saving grace against DC's Dark Knight franchise.

With this installment spearheaded by the reliable Shane Black behind the director's seat, I've got no worries that this will surpass Iron Man 2 for sure. Whether it can compete against the original is another story. (Not to mention the, 'WTF' is up with Ben Kingsley as Mandarin? Ben kingsley off Sexy Beast: Yes. Ben Kingsley off the The Love Guru: HELL NO! But we will soon see.

Will most probably surpass $100 million in North America alone.

7. G.I. Joe: Retaliation (2013)

PG-13 | 110 min | Action, Adventure, Sci-Fi

41 Metascore

The G.I. Joes are not only fighting their mortal enemy Cobra; they are forced to contend with threats from within the government that jeopardize their very existence.

Director: Jon M. Chu | Stars: Dwayne Johnson, Channing Tatum, Adrianne Palicki, Lee Byung-hun

Votes: 187,309 | Gross: $122.52M

Although Rise of the Cobra catered for the youth of today rather than the youth of the 80's,that movie made some serious money. Whether 'Retaliation' caters for the youth of then may seem to be desired. But one thing is for certain - this movie will make more than the original.

Here are the factors: Channing Tatum, Dwayne Johnson, Bruce Willis, and Ninjas fighting on the edge of a cliff.

Channing will bring in the ladies. The Rock will bring in the guys, whoever happens to be at World's gym that weekend, and all the islands in the Pacific. Bruce will bring in his Die Hard fans, every woman who was 18+ in the early 80's, and the cast of The Expendables 1 and 2. And there are ninjas fighting on the edge of a cliff

They say that the studio wanted to hold the film back a year so they cold convert to 3D. So it wasn't because the film was about to come out and all of a sudden Channing Tatum became HUGE so when they realised they killed him off in retaliation they realised that it was a HUGE mistake? Hmmmmmm.

$100 Million easy

8. Turbo (2013)

PG | 96 min | Animation, Adventure, Comedy

58 Metascore

A freak accident might just help an everyday garden snail achieve his biggest dream: winning the Indy 500.

Director: David Soren | Stars: Ryan Reynolds, Paul Giamatti, Maya Rudolph, Samuel L. Jackson

Votes: 110,630 | Gross: $83.03M

Animated - Check Holiday release - Check Adult humor - Check

Enough said

9. The Croods (2013)

PG | 98 min | Animation, Adventure, Comedy

55 Metascore

After their cave is destroyed, a caveman family must trek through an unfamiliar fantastical world with the help of an inventive boy.

Directors: Kirk DeMicco, Chris Sanders | Stars: Nicolas Cage, Ryan Reynolds, Emma Stone, Catherine Keener

Votes: 231,942 | Gross: $187.17M

Same as 'Turbo'

10. Star Trek Into Darkness (2013)

PG-13 | 132 min | Action, Adventure, Sci-Fi

72 Metascore

After the crew of the Enterprise find an unstoppable force of terror from within their own organization, Captain Kirk leads a manhunt to a war-zone world to capture a one-man weapon of mass destruction.

Director: J.J. Abrams | Stars: Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Zoe Saldana, Benedict Cumberbatch

Votes: 497,033 | Gross: $228.78M

J.J. Abrams accomplished the impossible when he directed the Star Trek reboot. It's not often a Star trek movie can attract a new fan base other than 'The Trekkies' of old. But he did it with finesse and panache, and left most people wanting more.

The sequel looks enticing and will surely pack the theatres for days, and more.

11. Oblivion (I) (2013)

PG-13 | 124 min | Action, Adventure, Sci-Fi

54 Metascore

A veteran assigned to extract Earth's remaining resources begins to question what he knows about his mission and himself.

Director: Joseph Kosinski | Stars: Tom Cruise, Morgan Freeman, Andrea Riseborough, Olga Kurylenko

Votes: 553,016 | Gross: $89.02M

One of two Science Fiction films that might fall short of $100 million on the list, Oblivion sure does have the goods. Tom Cruise, Morgan Freeman, Melissa Leo and Olga Kurylenko are all actors and actresses worth watching. And Director, Joseph Kolinski's 'Tron: Legacy' was a welcoming surprise.

If it doesn't reach the 100 mill mark, then it sure will come close

12. After Earth (2013)

PG-13 | 100 min | Action, Adventure, Sci-Fi

33 Metascore

A crash landing leaves Kitai Raige and his father Cypher stranded on Earth, a millennium after events forced humanity's escape. With Cypher injured, Kitai must embark on a perilous journey to signal for help.

Director: M. Night Shyamalan | Stars: Jaden Smith, David Denman, Will Smith, Sophie Okonedo

Votes: 208,903 | Gross: $60.52M

Whether or not the chemistry of Father and Son will transfer from 'The Pursuit of Happyness' to 'After Earth' remains to be seen. It's Will Smith's power to bring in the numbers with his Sci-fi/Action films (Independance Day, I, Robot, I am Legend, Bad Boys...) that will push this one to, and then through, $100 million.

Will Jaden's star shine brighter than his father's? Who knows

13. A Good Day to Die Hard (2013)

R | 98 min | Action, Thriller

28 Metascore

John McClane travels to Russia to help out his seemingly wayward son, Jack, only to discover that Jack is a CIA operative working undercover, causing the father and son to team up against underworld forces.

Director: John Moore | Stars: Bruce Willis, Jai Courtney, Sebastian Koch, Mary Elizabeth Winstead

Votes: 215,039 | Gross: $67.35M

The fifth installment in the Die Hard series takes the hero overseas. A nice change from the villains having to move to the U.S.

'A Good Day' brings a new villian, a new country, and a son. the franchises fans should be more than enough to push John Maclane through $100 million. Will it justify another sequel, though? We will soon see

14. Oz the Great and Powerful (2013)

PG | 130 min | Adventure, Family, Fantasy

44 Metascore

A small-time magician is swept away to an enchanted land and is forced into a power struggle between three witches.

Director: Sam Raimi | Stars: James Franco, Michelle Williams, Rachel Weisz, Mila Kunis

Votes: 214,268 | Gross: $234.91M

The second prequel to 'The Wizard of Oz' is a dark horse for sure. But Sam Raimi knows how to make a hit film and if he could just move Spiderman 3 to the side and forget that even happened (even though Spidey still managed to bring in the coin the third time around) then a fresh start OTGP may very well be.

With a star studded ensemble, and Raimi behind the lens, Oz should have no problems hitting $100 worldwide.

15. The Hunger Games: Catching Fire (2013)

PG-13 | 146 min | Action, Adventure, Sci-Fi

76 Metascore

Katniss Everdeen and Peeta Mellark become targets of the Capitol after their victory in the 74th Hunger Games sparks a rebellion in the Districts of Panem.

Director: Francis Lawrence | Stars: Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson, Liam Hemsworth, Philip Seymour Hoffman

Votes: 721,106 | Gross: $424.67M

It's 'The Hunger Games'.

Now with the Twilight franchise done and dusted, Catching Fire will continue to feed the visual appetites of youth and young adults who felt a little 'hungry for more' after the first film.

The fan base alone will ensure a profitable gain for the second film in the series.

16. The Hangover Part III (2013)

R | 100 min | Comedy, Crime

30 Metascore

When one of their own is kidnapped by an angry gangster, the Wolf Pack must track down Mr. Chow, who has escaped from prison and is on the run.

Director: Todd Phillips | Stars: Bradley Cooper, Zach Galifianakis, Ed Helms, Justin Bartha

Votes: 335,313 | Gross: $112.20M

If this movie does see the light of day this year, then it has a lot of originality to make up for.

The second film in the trilogy was a huge disappointment even though it did benefit from, well, being the sequel to a box office sensation.

Curiosity will have movie goers spend their money and time to be the first to see this film on release. Meaning that the box office numbers will soar during the opening weekend. Depending on whether number three can deliver on originality and seat wetting surprise like the original will lead to word of mouth, good publicity, and hopefully a pleasant end to a fine idea

17. Furious 6 (2013)

PG-13 | 130 min | Action, Crime, Thriller

61 Metascore

Hobbs has Dominic and Brian reassemble their crew to take down a team of mercenaries: Dominic unexpectedly gets sidetracked with facing his presumed deceased girlfriend, Letty.

Director: Justin Lin | Stars: Vin Diesel, Paul Walker, Dwayne Johnson, Michelle Rodriguez

Votes: 416,789 | Gross: $238.68M

Fast 5 took the world by storm (and by surprise) to become one of the most exciting movies of 2011.

Now with speculation that Michelle Rodriguez's 'Lenny' will be returning, the whole timeline of the TFAF franchise is becoming more twisted than Inception. However, action fans and Furious followers will flock to pay their money (and their respects) to a franchise that won't quit.

18. Epic (2013)

PG | 102 min | Animation, Action, Adventure

52 Metascore

A teenager finds herself transported to a deep forest setting where a battle between the forces of good and evil is taking place. She bands together with a ragtag group of characters to save their world--and ours.

Director: Chris Wedge | Stars: Amanda Seyfried, Josh Hutcherson, Beyoncé, Colin Farrell

Votes: 109,872 | Gross: $107.52M

2013 looks to bring more animated features than 2011 and 2012 combined. With a May holiday release, families will flock to see Epic, Turbo and The Croods.

19. Monsters University (2013)

G | 104 min | Animation, Adventure, Comedy

65 Metascore

A look at the relationship between Mike Wazowski and James P. "Sully" Sullivan during their days at Monsters University, when they weren't necessarily the best of friends.

Director: Dan Scanlon | Stars: Billy Crystal, John Goodman, Steve Buscemi, Helen Mirren

Votes: 389,876 | Gross: $268.49M

Unlike other hit animated franchises, this sequel took a bit longer to come to life. But that's not a bad thing. After 'Monster's Inc', one can only hope that the same amount of love put into the original will show in what will certainly be a labour of love

20. World War Z (2013)

PG-13 | 116 min | Action, Adventure, Horror

63 Metascore

Former United Nations employee Gerry Lane traverses the world in a race against time to stop a zombie pandemic that is toppling armies and governments and threatens to destroy humanity itself.

Director: Marc Forster | Stars: Brad Pitt, Mireille Enos, Daniella Kertesz, James Badge Dale

Votes: 719,205 | Gross: $202.36M

Shades of 'I am Legend' come to mind when you take a look at this new Brad Pitt film.

Based on the best seller, the film should utilize drama with the support of some action and suspense to take Pitt's brief foray into Zombie world to over $100 million world wide

21. Despicable Me 2 (2013)

PG | 98 min | Animation, Adventure, Comedy

62 Metascore

When Gru, the world's most super-bad turned super-dad has been recruited by a team of officials to stop lethal muscle and a host of Gru's own, he has to fight back with new gadgetry, cars, and more minion madness.

Directors: Pierre Coffin, Chris Renaud | Stars: Steve Carell, Kristen Wiig, Benjamin Bratt, Miranda Cosgrove

Votes: 425,950 | Gross: $368.06M

The little minions proved to be a huge surprise in 2011. Now back for a second outing, and with children and adults waiting in anticipation, Gru and his minions should have no problems surpassing $100 Million and beyond

22. The Wolverine (2013)

PG-13 | 126 min | Action, Sci-Fi

61 Metascore

Wolverine comes to Japan to meet an old friend whose life he saved years ago, and gets embroiled in a conspiracy involving yakuza and mutants.

Director: James Mangold | Stars: Hugh Jackman, Will Yun Lee, Tao Okamoto, Rila Fukushima

Votes: 491,959 | Gross: $132.56M

There is no doubt that he is one of the most popular superheroes alongside Superman, Spiderman and Batman. Whether this has been justified outside of the X-Men film universe is, well, obsolete.

Thankfully for fans of Marvel's 'sharp' witted hero, we are given another chance to believe that he deserves his time in limelight. And with James Mangold's above average 'Knight and Day', The Wolverine might get a rather stylized touch in the land of the rising sun

Like many other superhero franchises this year, his fan base alone should take him over $100 million.

23. Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues (2013)

PG-13 | 119 min | Comedy

61 Metascore

With the 1970s behind him, Ron Burgundy, San Diego's former top-rated newsreader, returns to take New York City's first twenty-four-hour news channel by storm.

Director: Adam McKay | Stars: Will Ferrell, Christina Applegate, Paul Rudd, Steve Carell

Votes: 192,293 | Gross: $127.35M

There will, without question, be a few surprise hit comedies during the year.

But if I were to put my last dollar to bet on a sure fire money maker, it'll be on this sequel to what is probably the most quoted movie over the past decade.

Ron Burgandy and the team return for a second outing. And here's hoping that the chemistry between the actors continues with a few new faces.

24. Riddick (2013)

R | 119 min | Action, Adventure, Sci-Fi

49 Metascore

Left for dead on a sun-scorched planet, Riddick finds himself up against an alien race of predators. Activating an emergency beacon alerts two ships: one carrying a new breed of mercenary, the other captained by a man from Riddick's past.

Director: David Twohy | Stars: Vin Diesel, Karl Urban, Katee Sackhoff, Jordi Mollà

Votes: 177,954 | Gross: $42.03M

This is a long shot after the travesty that was 'Chronicles'. But after the success of Fast Five and a reinvigorated David Twohy, things are looking up for everyone's favorite Furion.

Riddick will surpass $100 million overseas. If the Riddick and David of Pitch Black turns up, it may very well make that much in North America
