1. Beauty and the Beast (1991)
G | 84 min | Animation, Family, Fantasy
A prince cursed to spend his days as a hideous monster sets out to regain his humanity by earning a young woman's love.
Directors: Gary Trousdale, Kirk Wise | Stars: Paige O'Hara, Robby Benson, Jesse Corti, Rex Everhart
Votes: 479,909 | Gross: $218.97M
The fact this was nominated for Best Picture easily suggests it would have won Best Animated Feature need any more be said.
2. Aladdin (1992)
G | 90 min | Animation, Adventure, Comedy
A kind-hearted street urchin and a power-hungry Grand Vizier vie for a magic lamp that has the power to make their deepest wishes come true.
Directors: Ron Clements, John Musker | Stars: Scott Weinger, Robin Williams, Linda Larkin, Jonathan Freeman
Votes: 467,316 | Gross: $217.35M
Disney more than likely would have followed up with another win the following year with this title. There really is not anything that would have competed with it.
3. The Nightmare Before Christmas (1993)
PG | 76 min | Animation, Family, Fantasy
Jack Skellington, king of Halloween Town, discovers Christmas Town, but his attempts to bring Christmas to his home causes confusion.
Director: Henry Selick | Stars: Danny Elfman, Chris Sarandon, Catherine O'Hara, William Hickey
Votes: 375,341 | Gross: $75.08M
Some may say it may have been just purely Disney cartoon films that would of won but I feel it would have been hard to ignore the brilliance of this title.
4. The Lion King (1994)
G | 88 min | Animation, Adventure, Drama
Lion prince Simba and his father are targeted by his bitter uncle, who wants to ascend the throne himself.
Directors: Roger Allers, Rob Minkoff | Stars: Matthew Broderick, Jeremy Irons, James Earl Jones, Whoopi Goldberg
Votes: 1,143,330 | Gross: $422.78M
Again an obvious choice given it is a favoured Disney film by many.
5. Toy Story (1995)
G | 81 min | Animation, Adventure, Comedy
A cowboy doll is profoundly threatened and jealous when a new spaceman action figure supplants him as top toy in a boy's bedroom.
Director: John Lasseter | Stars: Tom Hanks, Tim Allen, Don Rickles, Jim Varney
Votes: 1,069,418 | Gross: $191.80M
Yes OK another obvious one but hang on moment I remember seeing this and thinking this is going to pave the way for the future, which it clearly has, but what a great story it has too and that does make it an easy winner.
6. The Hunchback of Notre Dame (1996)
G | 91 min | Animation, Drama, Family
A deformed bell-ringer must assert his independence from a vicious government minister in order to help his friend, a gypsy dancer.
Directors: Gary Trousdale, Kirk Wise | Stars: Demi Moore, Jason Alexander, Mary Kay Bergman, Corey Burton
Votes: 171,810 | Gross: $100.14M
Now some may say obvious some may say not so but I think when you bare in mind what Disney has done and the power of the name it is likely it would have come out trumps. Not only that there was not much in the way of competition.
7. Princess Mononoke (1997)
PG-13 | 134 min | Animation, Action, Adventure
On a journey to find the cure for a Tatarigami's curse, Ashitaka finds himself in the middle of a war between the forest gods and Tatara, a mining colony. In this quest he also meets San, the Mononoke Hime.
Director: Hayao Miyazaki | Stars: Yôji Matsuda, Yuriko Ishida, Yûko Tanaka, Billy Crudup
Votes: 434,151 | Gross: $2.38M
Not released in the U.S until '99 so in reality it would have been ineligible this particular year however I feel had the Best Animated Feature started earlier the world would be looking at other studios work earlier. The film itself I reckon would have deserved an Oscar.
8. Antz (1998)
PG | 83 min | Animation, Adventure, Comedy
A rather neurotic ant tries to break from his totalitarian society while trying to win the affection of the princess he loves.
Directors: Eric Darnell, Tim Johnson, Lawrence Guterman | Stars: Woody Allen, Sharon Stone, Gene Hackman, Sylvester Stallone
Votes: 164,124 | Gross: $90.76M
I will admit arguably my most controversial pick given 'A Bug's Life' was released within the same year but in my opinion Antz is a better film, whether the academy would of seen that is another matter, but as I said before I believe they would have looked elsewhere.
9. Toy Story 2 (1999)
G | 92 min | Animation, Adventure, Comedy
When Woody is stolen by a toy collector, Buzz and his friends set out on a rescue mission to save Woody before he becomes a museum toy property with his roundup gang Jessie, Prospector, and Bullseye.
Directors: John Lasseter, Ash Brannon, Lee Unkrich | Stars: Tom Hanks, Tim Allen, Joan Cusack, Kelsey Grammer
Votes: 620,153 | Gross: $245.85M
Probably obvious again though there was not much in the way of competition.
10. Chicken Run (2000)
G | 84 min | Animation, Adventure, Comedy
When a cockerel apparently flies into a chicken farm, the chickens see him as an opportunity to escape their evil owners.
Directors: Peter Lord, Nick Park | Stars: Mel Gibson, Julia Sawalha, Phil Daniels, Lynn Ferguson
Votes: 212,390 | Gross: $106.83M
You are probably thinking what!? Though again I feel not much competition and given Aardman's previous recognition with Wallace & Gromit this would have got the nod.
