Cinematic powerhouse actor Robert De Niro has given us some truly memorable performances for the ages, going all the way back to the 70s starting with Martin Scorsese’s’ Mean Streets. And let’s be honest, the guy clearly understands bat-shit crazy. Mr. DeNiro has some insane range, especially in the nutjob department. We’re talking great films such as Raging Bull, Taxi Driver, Cape Fear, The Untouchables, Mean Streets, and This Boy’s Life. But there is one film particularly overlooked in his filmography. A film that creeps along the uncharted path of unseen territory to most. This is 1996’s The Fan (a Best Movie You Never Saw fave of ours here), directed by the late Tony Scott and stars not just De Niro, but Wesley Snipes, Benicio Del Toro, Ellen Barkin, and John Leguizamo. The Fan centers around one man’s downfall and downward spiral into psychotic obsession toward...

All affirmed their guilty verdicts.
“The Republican candidate for president is a convicted felon,” wrote Stephen King.

Paramount Pictures had good reason to believe Adrian Lyne's "Fatal Attraction" would be another box office smash for the hit-making studio (which had just dominated 1986 with five of the ten highest-grossing movies of that year — including the top two in "Top Gun" and "Crocodile Dundee"), but they couldn't have anticipated the film becoming a full-blown, adult-skewing blockbuster. Nevertheless, the erotic thriller about an extramarital fling that turns into a waking nightmare for the happily married Dan Gallagher (Michael Douglas) outperformed such heavy hitters as "Beverly Hills Cop II," "The Untouchables," and "Lethal Weapon" to become the second highest-grossing film of 1987 (behind the four-quadrant behemoth "Three Men and a Baby").
Why was the film such a pop cultural sensation? Every single element clicked perfectly into place. Lyne brought the sensual heat, James Dearden's screenplay tightened the screws with nerve-jangling precision, and the stars absolutely smoldered. Douglas and Glenn Close...

Mort Engelberg, who was a producer on films including Smokey and the Bandit and The Big Easy before transitioning into politics as an “advance man” for Bill Clinton and other presidential candidates, died Saturday in Los Angeles of natural causes. He was 86.
“He was a wonderful person, a wonderful husband. He loved the movie business, and he loved his work with President Clinton,” his wife, Helaine Blatt, told The Hollywood Reporter. “He told the best stories of anyone I ever met, the best jokes.”
Born and raised in Memphis, Engelberg graduated from the University of Illinois and then spent a year working on a master’s degree in journalism at the University of Missouri. He left school before completing that degree and worked as a journalist for a few years before moving to Washington in 1961 to work for Sargent Shriver, the director of the then-newly formed Peace Corps, and later...

Hollywood’s long strike season is over and the town can finally get back to work without the specter of any more labor action, for now.
Actors were on strike for 118 days, but after ratifying the deal between SAG-AFTRA and the AMPTP, with a very healthy 78.33% of the votes, thesps, scribes, directors and crew — not to mention of all of the associated workers — can head into 2024 with a bit of optimism.
Duncan Crabtree-Ireland, National Executive Director of SAG-AFTRA and Chief Negotiator, who alongside President Fran Drescher and the guild’s negotiating committee spent many months working to secure this deal, spoke to Deadline an hour after Tuesday’s ratification vote. He evidently was pleased with both the result and the turnout, higher than even he saw coming.
The deal, which is worth around $1B over three years, comes with the union’s first-ever protections around AI technology, albeit controversial ones,...

Los Angeles, Aug 8 (Ians) Actor Adam Devine has shared his theory that Marvel movies and other superhero films killed the traditional Hollywood comedy.
The ‘Workaholics’ and ‘Pitch Perfect’ actor recently appeared on Theo Von’s ‘This Past Weekend’ podcast during his press tour for Netflix’s ‘The Out-Laws’ and shared his theory, reports Variety.
The actor noted that because Marvel movies rely so much on humour they ended up becoming Hollywood’s new de facto comedy films.
“You watch comedies nowadays and you’re like, this is not a f****** comedy,” Devine said.
“Where are the jokes? Where are the bits? There are still good (comedy) shows, but movie comedy, it’s hard. My theory: I think Marvel ruined it. I feel like superhero movies ruined comedies because you go to the theatre and you expect to watch something that cost $200 million to make, and comedy movies aren’t that.

“Bird Box Barcelona” remained the most-watched film worldwide on Netflix, even as “The Out-Laws” and the newly released “They Cloned Tyrone” dominated the Top 10 English film chart for the week of July 17. Read on for this week’s analysis.
Normally, Netflix’s English language films have the biggest audiences across the globe on a weekly basis, but with 19 million views, “Bird Box Barcelona” was the most-watched film in much of Latin and South America, as well as Spain and ten other European countries, plus a good portion of Asia as well.
Because of that, the “Bird Box” prequel ended up faring better than the #1 English language film, “The Out-Laws,” starring Adam Devine, Nina Dobrev, Pierce Brosnan and Ellen Barkin, which continues to be quite popular with 12.1 million views last week. “The Out-Laws” was in the Top 10 for 93 countries, but only #1 in four European countries, as well as Israel.

Newly released Netflix docuseries “Quarterback” takes viewers on an inside look at the lives of some of the league’s most-watched players’ off the gridiron. It’s the latest example of what co-ceo Ted Sarandos called “sports-adjacent” programming on Wednesday’s earnings call, and this one scored big.
Initial viewership of the series proved that football still reigns as an American favorite, and Netflix might not need to pay up for expensive broadcasting rights to profit from the national obsession. A total of 1.1 million households tuned into the premiere episode of the series in its first five days released, according to the latest Wrap Report for the week of July 10-16.

Hollywood actors and writers may be on the picket line, due to the many issues they have with various studios and networks, but they can’t really say that all streamers aren’t reporting how their shows and movies are faring. That’s exactly what Netflix has been doing each and every week with the Top 10 charts for the week of July 10, giving a detailed report on its current films and series, as “The Lincoln Lawyer” took the top spot for the latter and the sci-fi sequel “Bird Box Barcelona” entered the charts.
We’ll begin with the latter, since “Bird Box Barcelona” is the sequel to one of Netflix’s biggest hits, 2018’s “Bird Box” starring Sandra Bullock, the streamer’s fourth most-watched feature film ever. In this case, as the title implies, the post-apocalyptic action has been moved to Spain, and thusly, it charted on the non-English film...

After two weeks reigning over Netflix’s English-language series, Season 3 of The Witcher has been dethroned. The Lincoln Lawyer Season 2 is the new champ for the week of July 10 to July 16 with 8.3M views across five episodes.
The first five episodes hit Netflix on July 6 and debuted at No. 2 on the list last week. The latter half of the season is set to release in August.
Audiences were also catching up with Manuel Garcia-Rulfo’s Mickey Haller in Season 1 of the legal drama, which soared to No. 5 on the English-language list with 3.4M views.
The Witcher didn’t fall far from its top spot, though it did experience a fairly significant decrease in viewership week-over-week. The first half of Season 3 is currently sitting in second place with 6.7M views, which is about half of the week prior’s nearly 14M views.

There were many new entries into the Netflix Top 10 film chart for the week of July 3, some new seasons of familiar TV series, as well as a new comedy movie. Read on for this week’s analysis.

The Witcher Season 3 is still holding strong on Netflix’s English-language TV list.
In its second week on the streamer, the first half of the new season drew 13.8M views (66.5M view hours divided by 4.82 runtime hours) for the week of July 3 to 9. That’s down slightly from the 15.2M views the episodes managed in their first few days on the platform following its June 29 debut.
Season 3 has managed 29M views since launch. It’s still quite a ways away from making the most popular TV list, as it would need to crack 79M views. But it’s only been two weeks, and there is still plenty of time in Netflix’s new 91-day measurement window for the season to make it — especially with the second half of the season yet to be released.

Three VOD charts and Netflix’s top 10 all resulted in films set in non-Earth planetary worlds leading the pack in home viewing. “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3” (Disney) is #1 on VOD (at $19.99) at iTunes, Google Play, and Vudu, while “65,” four months after its theatrical release and multiple weeks scoring on VOD, tops Netflix’s movie chart.
“Galaxy” had a two-month window, as Disney increasingly slows down its initial home releases (“Avatar: The Way of Water” waited 100 days), and then to PVOD, not streaming. It was dominant enough that it led Vudu’s revenue-based list, even though it was only available for three of the seven days of their full-week rankings.

Halfway into The Out-Laws, I was wondering if I should get a drink and watch the rest after getting a little buzzed because that would have certainly made this experience more profound. Not that it is any less than when you watch it dead sober. But there is one condition. You need to have a penchant for bad movies, like me. That is the only way you would enjoy The Out-Laws. It is a very obvious bad movie, which fits right into the “so bad that it’s good” genre. This is a movie where a man mistakes another man’s genitals for a ripcord while sky-diving. The same man repeatedly gets his buttocks grabbed by his fiancé’s parents as if nothing happened. Then, during an all-important heist, this man uses a water gun instead of a real one. Yes, it is that kind of movie. With the freedom of R-rating,...

Plot: Owen Browning is a straight-laced bank manager about to marry the love of his life, Parker. When his bank is held up by the infamous Ghost Bandits during his wedding week, he believes his future in-laws who just arrived in town, are the infamous Out-Laws.
Review: There are few winners in this late phase of the Streaming Wars as accomplished as Adam Sandler. The former SNL funnyman went from box office superstar to a lucrative contract with Netflix, resulting in dozens of mediocre movies and very few good ones. Even when not starring in the films, Happy Madison Productions has released films of a similar ilk which are funny enough for ambient viewing but not nearly good enough for the big screen. The latest Happy Madison movie, The Out-Laws, starring Adam Devine as an average guy whose future in-laws are notorious bank robbers played by Pierce Brosnan and Ellen Barkin.

‘The Out-Laws’ Review: Adam Devine Tangles With Pierce Brosnan In Over-Stuffed Netflix Action Comedy
In 1979, Peter Falk and the late great Alan Arkin made the perfect odd couple in the classic action comedy The In-Laws. It even spawned a not-bad remake with Michael Douglas and Albert Brooks in 2003. The difference between those films, and a bit of an attempt to do something similar in the cleverly titled The Out-Laws, which starts streaming on Netflix today, is that those movies were genuinely funny –particularly the Arkin-Falk teaming. But this one, also a kind of Meet the Parents on steroids, relies far too heavily on nonstop and incessant action scenes to carry us through its 95-minute running time.
The fault here does not lie with its cast, which is pretty impressive overall. Basically this is a comedic vehicle for Adam Devine, who not only stars but also helped develop the Ben Zazove and Evan Turner script as well as producing with Happy Madison’s Adam Sandler and Allen Covert.

Like the chicken and the egg, it’s hard to know what came first for the new Adam Sandler-produced Netflix feature, The Out-Laws: Was it the title or the concept?
My gut would lean toward the former, so much does this watchable if forgettable crime comedy feel like an entire movie wrapped around a simple play on words. In case you somehow missed it, imagine for one second that your mysterious in-laws arrived in town on the brink of your wedding and turned out to be “out-laws.” Get it?
As silly as that sounds, the out-laws in question, played by Pierce Brosnan and Ellen Barkin, manage to carry the concept to a few fun places, mostly because their characters — a pair of bank robbers named Billy and Lilly — truly look like they don’t give a shit. Compared to their yoga-teaching daughter, Parker (Nina Dobrev), and her fiancé,...

Tyler Spindel’s The Out-Laws is exactly the kind of film that streaming services have promised to showcase for years but have rarely delivered. Written by Ben Zazove and Evan Turner, it’s the sort of breezily pleasurable, mid-budget, and intimately scaled movie that used to be a staple of the video stores that streaming helped to kill.
Tightly wound bank manager Owen (Adam DeVine), on the eve of his nuptials to Parker (Nina Dobrev), finally meets her parents, Billy (Pierce Brosnan) and Lilly (Ellen Barkin), only for his excitement to quickly turn sour when his bank is robbed by bandits whom he strongly suspects are his future in-laws. Before Owen can confirm his suspicions, though, Billy and Lilly get their cover blown by a rival thief (Poorna Jagannathan), who takes Parker hostage to extort her parents, forcing them (and Owen) to commit further robberies to pay her ransom.

What if you managed a bank, and your fiancée’s folks turned out to be notorious bank robbers who saw their prospective son-in-law as the perfect patsy for their next hit? Not a bad setup for hijinks and hilarity. That’s what the filmmakers behind “The Out-Laws” are hoping, anyway. Produced by Adam Sandler (among others) and directed by Tyler Spindel, the not-so-original Netflix original plays like “Meet the Parents” crossed with “Fun with Dick and Jane.” Seeing as how the former inspired several sequels and the latter a remake, the situational comedy on offer is hardly fresh, though it still could (and should) have been funnier.
As Owen Browning, Adam Devine takes the mantle from Sandler to play a schlubby everyman partnered with a gorgeous woman (Nina Dobrev) out of his league. Naturally, he’s kind-hearted and willing to sacrifice all for his one true love. And that’s...

Actor Kevin Bacon has worked steadily as an actor and appeared in so many different films that he actually spawned a trivia game called “Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon.” The purpose is to see if you can link Bacon to any other actor in less than six other movies.
Bacon started his career at the Circle in the Square Theater School in New York City, which then led to small roles in the immensely popular “Animal House” and in the Neil Simon film “Only When I Laugh.” He then appeared in the sleeper smash “Friday the 13th” where he was one of the early victims in the immensely popular series of films. Poker Face pulled off many things in its debut season. With its murder-mystery-of-the-week plot in a new spin on the detective genre, the Natasha Lyonne-starring Peacock series from Rian Johnson revived the concept of procedural television for streaming, saw Benjamin Bratt turn a catchy Blues Traveler song into a poetic monologue and recruited Star Wars legend Phil Tippett for one episode’s special effects. But perhaps most impressive, Poker Face assembled an eye-popping roster of guest stars.

This story about the ensemble cast of “Poker Face” first appeared in the Comedy Series issue of TheWrap’s awards magazine.
No Emmy-caliber new series relies as heavily on its ensemble of guest actors as “Poker Face” — and fewer still boast the caliber of talent assembled by creator Rian Johnson, star-executive-producer-director Natasha Lyonne and showrunners Lilla and Nora Zuckerman.
Lyonne stars in the Peacock comedy as our woebegone hero Charlie Cale, an off-the-grid, muscle car-driving ex-casino worker who’s on the run from a mafioso (Adrien Brody) who wants her head after she learns the truth about the mysterious death of her coworker (Dascha Polanco). An enticing enough premise on its own, there’s another twist: Charlie is, inexplicably, a human lie detector — a skill that makes her a very good gambler and a rough-and-tumble vigilante detective. That’s where our guest stars come in.
