Nothing gold can stay, and to make room for everything new at Hulu in November, we have to say goodbye to dozens of the series and movies on the platform. The streamer will make room for its upcoming Christmas library by losing some of its horror-themed titles throughout the month, including “Stephen King's It,” most of its “Saw” franchise, and “Shaun Of The Dead.” Other major titles leaving the platform include Emma Stone’s breakthrough comedy “Easy A,” the Nora Ephron classic “Sleeping in Seattle,” and more.

The unimaginable — a modern U.S. civil war — gains considerable clarity and alarming proximity in the documentary “Against All Enemies,” about the continuing rise of far-right extremist groups. Various talking heads here stress that the January 6 insurrection was no aberration but part of a fast-evolving pattern that poses a serious threat to our democracy. Charlie Sadoff’s film focuses largely on the role of military veterans in groups that one way or another seem to be agitating for violent government overthrow, though it also casts a wider net. This densely packed, sobering overview of hitherto subterranean political trends feels tooled for broadcast, where in any case it would have the most impact.
While one would think adherence to their Oath of Enlistment would prevent veterans from joining any such cause, the siren call of online propaganda and individuals’ societal alienation post-service actually make them particularly susceptible. Paranoid rhetoric convinces many...

Steven Spielberg is admitting that he made a mistake when he edited guns out of E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial.
Speaking at Time’s 100 Summit, the director explained why he made the changes in the first place and why he now regrets it.
“That was a mistake. I never should have done that,” Spielberg said about editing guns out of the science fiction film. “E.T. is a product of its era. No film should be revised based on the lenses we now are, either voluntarily, or being forced to peer through.”
He continued, “E.T. was a film that I was sensitive to the fact that the federal agents were approaching kids with firearms exposed and I thought I would change the guns into walkie-talkies… Years went by and I changed my own views. I should have never messed with the archives of my own work, and I don’t recommend anyone do that.

As Gold Derby predicted, Barack Obama was just awarded the Best Narrator prize at the 2022 Creative Arts Emmys for the Netflix documentary series “Our Great National Parks.” The former U.S. president was, understandably, not in attendance to accept his first TV Academy honor. He is now halfway to Egot status, having already nabbed two Grammys for Best Spoken Word Album.
Obama fended off quite a formidable challenger in three-time Best Narrator Emmy winner David Attenborough, who was recognized this year for “The Mating Game.” The other three contenders in the lineup were returning nominees Kareem Abdul-Jabbar (“Black Patriots: Heroes of the Civil War”) and Lupita Nyong’o (“Serengeti II”) and category first-timer W. Kamau Bell (“We Need to Talk About Cosby”).

The words offbeat, personal and edgy used to be a draw for movie fare — we’d check out a new relationship picture based only on an actor or two that we liked. Bobby Roth’s semi-autobiographical buddy story has a good stab at the early ’80s art + singles scene in Los Angeles, with a dash of macho clichés — pals Peter Coyote and Nick Mancuso fight in public and somehow suffer while bedding fantastic women. But the overall vibe is one of honest sensitivity, aided by fine performances from Carole Laure, Kathryn Harrold and Carol Wayne. Plus music by Tangerine Dream.

The TV academy has honored voice-only performances since 1992, when six cast members from “The Simpsons” collectively became the first actors to receive Emmys for such work. The Best Voice-Over Performance category became an official non-juried one in 2009 and was then split into two categories in 2014: Best Character Voice-Over and Best Narrator. Jeremy Irons (“Game of Lions”) made history as the latter category’s first champion, having been awarded once before for “The Great War and the Shaping of the 20th Century: War Without End” in 1997.
The 2022 Best Narrator ballot list below consists of 33 performances. Seeking a fourth victory is David Attenborough (“The Mating Game”), whose three-year streak was broken last year by Sterling K. Brown (“Lincoln: Divided We Stand”). Also in the mix are former winners Peter Coyote (“Benjamin Franklin”) and Keith David (“Muhammad Ali”).

Sharon Bialy and Gohar Gazazyan both knew that they had an incredible task in casting someone to play Donald Trump in the Showtime limited series “The Comey Rule.” “His mannerisms and the way that he carries himself has been done so much in comedy. We were really leaning towards a sort of authentic portrayal of him, but there’s still that part of him that is almost like a sketch version of a person,” Gazazyan remembers in our recent interview (watch the exclusive video above). They would eventually land on Brendan Gleeson, but there was one small problem: he turned it down. This forced Bialy to exercise her powers of persuasion to help change his mind. “I wrote a beautiful letter to him. And then I just kept calling and saying, he really should talk to Billy. You really should talk to Billy or, or read it again. And the manager was really helpful,...

Continuing their attempts to chronicle every foundational moment or figure in American history, Ken Burns and Lynn Novick’s exhaustive six-hour documentary, “Hemingway,” traces the historical formation of the titular author. Utilizing Burns’s now routine formal devices – photo pans and zooms, talking heads, Peter Coyote narration – “Hemingway” grafts the author’s life onto his novels in ways that may trouble literary critics who have moved on from biographical criticism but will be captivating for fans of Burns’ particular form of reporting.

How impressive is Ken Burns as a documentarian? Think of it like this: In the 1980s, the Brooklyn-born filmmaker earned Oscar nominations for making compelling docs on the history of a pair of inanimate objects. Granted, “Brooklyn Bridge” and “The Statue of Liberty” were films on America’s strength and exceptionalism as much as they were on the landmarks themselves, but those early projects set Burns on a path to utilize the same kind of majestic storytelling to connect with human subjects, whether dead or alive.
From founding father and U.S. President Thomas Jefferson to celebrated humorist Mark Twain to the wrongly convicted Central Park Five, Burns builds on these legacies by also taking the pulse of the entire nation at the time through comprehensive reporting and a respect for the facts that might be skimmed over by other directors with less time to afford. Even when he was...

After more than two years in development, a reboot of The 4400 TV series has been ordered by The CW. The network gave the remake a straight-to-series order, meaning that a pilot has not been produced.
Airing on USA Network from July 2004 until September 2007, The 4400 series stars Joel Gretsch, Jacqueline McKenzie, Mahershala Ali, Laura Allen, Patrick Flueger, Megalyn Echikunwoke, Chad Faust, Kaj-Erik Eriksen, Samantha Ferris, Jenni Baird, Brooke Nevin, Conchita Campbell, Karina Lombard, Billy Campbell, and Peter Coyote. The story begins as a mysterious ball of light deposits a group of exactly 4,400 people near Mount Rainer in Washington state. These people had all previously disappeared in a beam of light, starting as far back as 1946. None of them have aged since their disappearances nor do they have any memory of where they've been.

To wholly savour The Comey Rules, one would need a certain relish for contemporary American politics beyond the knowledge of news headlines -- particularly of certain controversies pertaining to the FBI and the election of Donald Trump as 45th President of the Unites States.
Watch 'The Comey Rule' (2020) Official Trailer

Keeping that in mind is essential because the two-part series makes no effort to explain a lot of political subtext for those who came in late. The show captures a slice of political conflicts and chaos in the United States in a way that it remains very specific to the genre of political drama, as well as the country it talks about.
Jeff Daniels stars as former FBI director James Comey in a narrative that follows his story as he tries carrying on with his duties once President Trump (Brendan Gleeson) assumes office.

David Attenborough cemented his third straight win at tonight’s Creative Artists Emmy Awards, taking home the Emmy for Outstanding Narration for his work on the BBC America documentary “Seven Worlds, One Planet.” The win comes with its fair share of controversy, though, considering Attenborough — the go-to narrator over the decades for nature documentaries — was the only white nominee.
The Outstanding Narrator category is a relatively young one for the Emmys. It initially debuted back in 2016. Attenborough’s win is a bit of a shock considering the Emmys’ push towards diversity and inclusion, especially in a year where this very category saw four of five nominees being Black performers. However, the category, historically, has often been the domain of white Englishmen, going back to the year the category debuted; Jeremy Irons was the first Outstanding Narrator winner for his work on “Game of Lions.” Since that time predominately white actors have snagged wins,...

Billy Ray is expecting Donald Trump will not be happy at how he is portrayed on Ray’s two-part Showtime miniseries “The Comey Rule.”
Though Ray began by stating that he “gave up predicting how Donald Trump would react to things about five years ago,” the writer and director of the upcoming miniseries added during Showtime’s virtual press day Thursday, “it’s likely the IRS will start auditing my taxes.”
“I have no idea how he will react. I imagine I will be on his radar,” Ray, who wrote and directed the upcoming miniseries, said Thursday during Showtime’s virtual press day. “I think it’s likely that the IRS will start auditing my taxes. But I think at the very least, I’m in for a mean nickname on Twitter.”
The series is based on former FBI director James Comey’s memoir, “A Higher Loyalty,” which was released in April 2018 by Flatiron Books.

As America gears up for the 2020 presidential election between Donald Trump and Joe Biden, Showtime will be taking two nights ahead of Election Day to reexamine the turbulent 2016 election between Trump and Hillary Clinton thanks to the upcoming miniseries “The Comey Rule.” Written and directed by “Captain Phillips” and “Shattered Glass” scribe Billy Ray, “The Comey Rule” is based on the bestselling book “A Higher Loyalty” and explores the relationship between Trump and former FBI director Joseph Comey.
Showtime is billing “The Comey Rule” as “an immersive, behind-the-headlines account of the historically turbulent events surrounding the 2016 presidential election and its aftermath, which divided a nation.” The miniseries’ official synopsis adds: “Rather than a biopic of one man, the series tells the story of two powerful figures, Comey and Trump, whose strikingly different personalities, ethics and loyalties put them on a collision course.”

Showtime has moved up the premiere date of its upcoming miniseries “The Comey Rule” based on former FBI director James Comey’s memoir. It will air over two nights on Sept. 27 and 28.
Last week, Showtime announced that “The Comey Rule,” which stars Brendan Gleeson as President Donald Trump, would air in late November. The election is scheduled for Nov. 3. Showtime told TheWrap yesterday it was likely to move up.
Additionally, Showtime picked up the six-episode drama “We Hunt Together” from BBC Studios, which “explores the intoxication of sexual attraction and the dangerous power of emotional manipulation. As two conflicted detectives (Eve Myles and Babou Ceesay) track down a pair of deadly killers (Hermoine Corfield and Dipo Ola), the series reveals how finding a volatile form of solace in another can have dire consequences.” It will premiere on Aug. 9, moving back the Ethan Hunt-led “Good Lord Bird” to Oct. 4.

Showtime has just set a late November premiere date over two nights for its limited series The Comey Rule, the $40 million budget adaptation of A Higher Loyalty, the book by former FBI head James Comey that is about his battles with President Donald Trump. "I'm not going to make the same mistake with him." 1091 Media has debuted an official trailer for an indie drama The Etruscan Smile, which premiered at the 2018 Montréal World Film Festival a few years ago. Brian Cox stars as Rory MacNeil, a rugged old Scotsman, who travels across the world to San Francisco to seek medical treatment. He moves in with his estranged son Rory, as he sees his life getting transformed through a newfound bond with his baby grandson and a woman he meets in the city. Also starring Rosanna Arquette, JJ Feild, Thora Birch, Peter Coyote, Tim Matheson, and Treat Williams. Based on the bestselling novel by José Luis Sampedro. This looks charming in a gruff way, and emotional of course, but nothing we haven't seen before in so many other indie films about estranged families and stubborn parents. It’s a real shame that too few filmmakers know how to give Brian Cox a proper leading man role. Sure, he’s no spring chicken, but his screen presence and talent are a true force to be reckoned with. On television, he’s turning heads once again with the HBO series Succession. Today, out on VOD is The Etruscan Smile, a movie that actually does give Cox the lead to play. Sadly, despite his strong performance, the film is just not up to snuff, overstaying its welcome and ultimately not giving the man a vehicle worthy go his skills. It’s truly a shame. The flick is a drama about re-establishing bonds with your family. Aging Scotsman Rory McNeil (Cox) has long been content in his cozy little hometown. However, the need for medical treatment requires him to leave, so he packs his bags, with much protesting, and travels to San Francisco.

It would appear Sky have set the bar high with their 2019 Christmas ad campaign. It’s going to take some beating, but who could beat reuniting Elliot and E.T. for the first time after 37 years?.
In the over 4 minute Ad for Sky advert E.T. comes back to visit his friend, Elliott, for the holidays. During his stay, E.T. learns that Elliott now has a family of his own and that technology has completely changed on Earth since his last visit.
Actor Henry Thomas reprises his role of Elliott opposite the puppet. Even though E.T. came from the Alien enthusiast Steven Spielberg, the filmmaker was not involved in the short film but he did give his blessing for the ad.
