On Friday nights, IndieWire After Dark takes a feature-length beat to honor fringe cinema in the streaming age.
First, the spoiler-free pitch for one editor’s midnight movie pick — something weird and wonderful from any age of film that deserves our memorializing.
Then, the spoiler-filled aftermath as experienced by the unwitting editor attacked by this week’s recommendation.
The Pitch: A Very Sapphic Second Coming
Given the choice to watch Jesus fight a pack of lesbian vampires or an honest-to-God homophobe, I will almost always choose the lesbian vampires. It’s not that I wouldn’t like to see an intolerant bigot get roundhouse-kicked by the Prince of Peace; in fact, that image is particularly tempting ahead of Easter weekend during an election year.
But as an ex-Catholic school girl born of the “Twilight” generation, my unquenchable thirst for horny vampires supersedes my taste for virtue signaling most of the time.

Low-budget film-making duo announce plans to take advantage of Canadian copyright laws and adapt the Ian Fleming story. Ideally, with Ryan Reynolds
A duo of low-budget Canadian film-makers have announced plans to remake the James Bond film For Your Eyes Only, thanks to a loophole in copyright laws.
Lee Demarbre and Ian Driscoll, whose back catalogue includes the Mexican-wrestler thriller The Dead Sleep Easy and comedy musical Jesus Christ Vampire Hunter, say they are planning to take advantage of Canada’s 50-year copyright limit to start work on a new adaptation of Ian Fleming’s 1960 short story. Unlike most other major film markets, Canada does not enforce the Berne convention that extended authors’ copyright to 70 years after death, meaning that Fleming, who died in 1964, is in the public domain in the country.

For all of us here at Fangoria, the passing of actor/songwriter David Hess is a dark day indeed. Hess has been such a presence in horror culture from his work in Wes Craven’s landmark Last House On The Left, to other equally rough pictures as Ruggero Deodato’s House By The Edge Of The Park and Pasquale Campinile's Hitch Hike to his most recent picture, chewing scenery in Lee Demarbre’s Smash Cut.

Over the coming weeks, as a lead up the Hot Docs Film Festival in Toronto, Sound On Sight will be publishing a series of exclusive interviews with an eclectic group of documentary film makers. Mike Waldman sits down (over the phone) with the directors behind some of the most unusual, outrageous and personal narrative documentaries made over the last few years. These are some of the true story-tellers in documentary film and all of them have amazing tales to tell about their subjects, their process and themselves.
We begin our interview series with Lee Demarbre, director of Vampiro: Angel, Devil, Hero. His film about an fallen super-star of Mexican wrestling, born in Thunder Bay Ontario, is a true achievement in first-person narrative documentaries. The story of how his film got made is almost as amazing as the one on camera.

The popularity of a documentary film is often based on word-of-mouth. Very few docs get a wide release (or a theatrical release at all, for that matter) or receive much press. Unless it’s the latest Michael Moore film, a massive advocacy film aiming for Oscar recognition or a mass-market oddity like Supersize Me, a documentary is unlikely to get much public attention. Speciality docs about World War 2, boxing, rap feuds etc. will always have a market among people who are interested in those topics. Occasionally, one of them will even transcend its genre and become a broader success, introducing people to a new sub-culture or perspective. Most documentaries, however, get their recognition because people hear about them or see them at festivals and tell others to watch them.
Narrative documentaries, films that tell a first-person story about an individual or event, are even less likely to garner the attention of the public.

A week from now, you'll soon find porn star Sasha Grey in Smash Cut , the horror film by director Lee Demarbre which hits DVD. Grey is already lining up her next genre project, Hallows from Richard O'Sullivan. She'll play a Christian (!) that take a purity pledge not to have sex before she gets married. Grey also starred in The Girlfriend Experience for Steven Soderbergh. O'Sullivans tells >Horror Squad , "Hallows basically takes the standard kids-in-the-woods-running-from-a-killer genre and flips it on its ear. The deaths aren't random. They're not cookie cutter. Each character dies in a fashion relating to the way they live their life. About a year ago, there was a major studio bidding war going in Hollywood on over Seth Grahame-Smith's Jane Austen mash-up Pride and Prejudice and Zombies. Lionsgate ended up winning the rights, and although it seemed like just another silly property being bought for the catchy name alone, it did attract some impressive talent: David O. Russell will write and direct [1], while Natalie Portman will star [2]. This week Seth Grahame-Smith's next book Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter has just hit stores, and apparently Hollywood is getting worked up into a frenzy all over again. No studio has optioned it as of yet, but it has caught the attention of two big name directors: Timur and Tim Bur! Tim Burton and Timur Bekmambetov (Wanted) have previously worked together as producers on the animated film 9, and now they will team up to oversee this project as well. Neither one is likely to direct,...

Sony Pictures has released a small, very under the radar horror flick once known as Summer's Blood and now Summer's Moon. Released in November the flick stars Ashley Greene (The Twilight Saga: Eclipse), Peter Mooney (Scalpers), Stephen McHattie (Pontypool), and Barbara Niven (Dead at 17). Involving serial killers and incest, Summer's Moon is sure to push some buttons (hopefully not the off button). Some details did come out in November, but have a look at the full synopsis for Summer's Moon before the film fades in to complete obscurity.
A plotline for Summer's Moon:
"Hardened teenager Summer (Ashley Greene) is on the road looking to meet her estranged father. Her only clue to his whereabouts is a letter from a rural community called Massey.
Once she arrives in town Summer is rescued from a run-in with the law by a charming local handyman named Tom Hoxey (Peter Mooney). The couple...

Sasha Grey's persistent transition from porn to feature films (well, those not in the realm of pornography) continues, from The Girlfriend Experience to the upcoming Smash Cut directed by Lee Demarbre. This horror-comedy finds David Hess ( The Last House on the Left ) playing filmmaker Able Whitman, who sets out to prove his critics wrong by finding inspiration in his cast and crew. As the plot synopsis goes, "sometimes great art requires great sacrifice - and the director always gets final cut." Zing! Two hi-res pics floated our way this afternoon. Click below to see them both along with some poster art. Shock Till You Drop has learned Media Blasters picked the film up for distribution. If all goes according to plan, they intend to release it in February.

[Our thanks to Andrew David Long for the following review.]
B-movie fiends, prepare for a campy dose of low budget splatter. Lee Gordon Demarbre's Smash Cut is a loving tribute to the 1960s gore cinema of Herschell Gordon Lewis (who makes a delightful if brief appearance).
When failed horror-film auteur Able Whitman (David Hess, who's no stranger to horror flicks) accidentally kills his stripper muse Gigi Spot in a car crash, he discovers the key for horror cinema success: real corpses. Is there blood? Buckets and buckets of it. Are there spare body parts? Dr. Frankenstein was an amateur. Is there a plot? Good heavens, you're not watching it for the plot. There's enough story to keep Whitman going from kill to silly kill, and to lead to Whitman's final showdown with celebrity detective Isaac Beaumonde (Jesse Buck) and Gigi's intrepid journalist sister, April Carson, played by porn icon Sasha Grey. Grey suggested in Steven Soderburgh's The Girlfriend Experience that she really can act,...

Horror fans may not care about the sexy Twilight star Ashley Greene (who you may remember was also the star of a nude picture scandal) now, but perhaps they should. For one we know she has no problem posing nude, and she is not above actually starring in real horror films, something she will prove when Lee Demarbre's (Smash Cut) Summer's Blood is released. Greene plays "Summer" who is captured by a family of serial killers while she is on a road trip. Greene also recently posed for Men's Magazine and revealed some of her dating preferences... Smash Cut is a film by Canadian film-maker Lee Demarbre (Jesus Christ Vampire Hunter). It is a kind of throw-back to the horror fantasy yarns of the 1980's, when a director could rent out a studio lot and go nuts for a week - try his best to get some kind of film put together. I'm talking Charles Band, Golan-Globus, Canon. I'm thinking Orca and the Outlaws, Arena, Trancers: Cheap, quick and there to get cash for the next project, certainly not out of major artistic vision. In the film, aging director Able Whitman, played by David Hess (The Last House on the Left), is sitting in the back row during the screening of his latest effort: Terror Toy. A film so laughably bad that the audience jeer and promptly empty the cinema.

It’s hard to criticize a film like ‘Smash Cut,’ particularly if you’re interests don’t mesh with those of the filmmaker. For all intents and purposes, the film is critic-proof, as director Lee Demarbre pulls off exactly what he set out to make, an homage piece to Herschell Gordon Lewis. A low budget nod to the shock and schlock of Lewis, Demarbre’s film acts as both horror and comedy, though, when all is said and done, it’s pretty much all comedy.
At the center of ‘Smash Cut’ is low-budget, horror filmmaker, Abel Whitman, played with a presence by David Hess. He’s the kind of filmmaker who views his works as art, though most believe he “makes Ed Wood look like Orson Welles.” It isn’t until a fateful night when Abel gets into a violent accident with a local stripper that he realizes the special...

While we're awaiting a solid release plan for Lee Demarbre's H.G. Lewis-inspired Smash Cut, a second trailer has arrived.
A lot slicker than the previous, "grindhouse" style trailer that we shared with you earlier this year, the latest trailer can be viewed below.
Able Whitman (David Hess) is a horror-film director whose movies are panned by critics and audiences alike — until he starts killing people and using their body parts as props in his new flick.
Now, only intrepid Smash Cut. reporter April Carson (Sasha Grey) and celebrated private detective Isaac Beaumonde (Jesse Buck) stand between the demonic director and his unquenchable thirst for butchery at 24 frames per second!
Inspired by the career and filmography of Herschell Gordon Lewis, Smash Cut is a gore-splattered satire of the blood sport known as filmmaking.
This director's cut bleeds!
Check out our Fangoria Exclusive video of Demarbre (here) and Sasha Grey...

Lionsgate Home Entertainment has announced that it will release a new psychochiller starring Ashley Greene, who plays Alice Cullen in Twilight and the upcoming The Twilight Saga: New Moon. The movie was originally lensed (in Ottawa, Canada) as Summer and has also been known as Summer’S Blood, but for some strange reason, it has been rechristened Summer’S Moon for its DVD release.
Streeting November 10, the film casts Greene as Summer, a young woman who takes a road trip to track down her estranged father. She winds up in the clutches of a handyman who at first seems friendly, but proves to be one of a family of maniacs who take her prisoner. The cast also includes A History Of Violence’s Stephen McHattie, Barbara Niven, Peter Mooney and Danielle Kind; Smash Cut’s Lee Demarbre directed from a script by Sean Hogan and Christine Conradt. The year is 2019. A mysterious plague has swept over the earth, transforming the majority of the world’s population into vampires. Humans are now an endangered, second-class species – forced into hiding as they are hunted and farmed for vampire consumption to the brink of extinction. Fantastic Fest in Austin is one of the best festivals in the country devoted to genre films. Previously, we brought you news about the first round of films scheduled to show during the fest. And now, there’s even more news to share today, including some great guests and some relly cool films we’re looking forward to seeing.
But really, I probably can’t do all this info proper justice (given my time constraints today at least) so I’ll just let Tim League, director/co-founder of the Fest, speak for himself via the latest Fest press release:
George Romero Returns to Fantastic Fest!
George RomeroIn 2007, Fantastic Fest was honored by the presence of one of the true masters of horror, George A. Romero. Now, two years later, we are thrilled to welcome back the undisputed champion of all things undead for his latest blood-drenched thrillride, Survival Of The Dead.

Since Director Lee Demarbre’s H.G. Lewis love letter Smash Cut recently splashed across screens at Fantasia in Montreal, I figured I’d run a recent interview I did with porn legend Sasha Grey, who stars in the film.
Grey is gorgeous and – as evidenced in Steven Soderbergh’s recent drama The Girlfriend Experience – ultra talented, gifted with acting chops as well as a dynamic physical presence. She’s well on her way to a career that doesn’t exclusively involve engaging in pummelling carnal knowledge….though anyone even casually aware of her trademark talents might mourn the loss of that.
Anyway, here we go…the lovely Sasha Grey.
Chris Alexander: Tell me about your role in Smash Cut.
Sasha Grey: I play April, a TV news personality who goes undercover as an actress in a horror film to discover the killer of her older sister who’s a stripper.

It’s difficult for me to write an engrossing lede for this interview with adult film star Sasha Grey without sounding like a condescending pervert. Plus, I think my mother will be reading this, so I’m not sure I won’t into too much detail about how I debated asking Grey to sign my copy of Swallow My Squirt #4. Instead, I’ll just talk about how charming Grey is in person. Since starting her adult career in 2006 at the age of 18, Grey has become a sensation, mainly because of her outspoken determination to bring creativity back into pornography. Recently, she’s made a move into more mainstream cinema, starring in Steven Soderbergh’s The Girlfriend Experience, and Canadian cult film king Lee Demarbre’s Smash Cut, in which she plays alongside David Hess and Ray Sager in a tribute to the films of Herschell Gordon Lewis. Your Hands Are Bleeding! Your Hands Are Bleeding! Lee Demarbre Talks About His New Film Smash Cut
Lee Demarbre, the Ottawa-based talent behind Canadian cult films Jesus Christ, Vampire Hunter and The Dead Sleep Easy turns in his most self-reflexive work to date - a tribute to pioneering exploitation director Herschell Gordon Lewis set in the unsympathetic world of contemporary independent filmmaking!
Grindhouse titan David Hess (The Last House On The Left, House On The Edge Of The Park, Hitch-hike) stars as Able Whitman, a down-on-his-luck horror filmmaker subject to relentless mockery from obnoxious critics and jaded audiences alike. It seems that nobody likes his latest film Terror Toy, or finds its killer – a foot-high clown named 'Bobo' – very believable. After a car accident with no witnesses leaves a stripper friend dead and in pieces, Whitman is struck with a revelation - he'll use real body parts in his film!

Crush and Blush Directed by Lee Kyoung-mi * 1/2 Lee-Kyoung-mi’s first feature tries too hard to be the “polar opposite” of a romantic comedy. The story of a male teacher being stalked by a former pupil who has now become a teacher herself in order to be closer to him to attract his attention simply does not sustain the premise past the opening 20 minutes. The lead character, Me-sook, is played in an over-the-top fashion, and the film seems to have been made for the art-house crowd in spite of its plot, which seems ripe for a broad comedic treatment. The films also seems haphazardly edited and is often needlessly confusing. Grace Directed by Paul Solet *** ½ Childbirth can be a horrific experience if things go wrong, a fact ably exploited in Grace, which acts as a surefire contraceptive. An impressive first feature by director Paul Solet, who delivers an ambitious and masterful web of chills,...

- Anyone seeing Smash Cut without knowing anything about it could be forgiven for thinking it's a bad film. But when viewed within its context as a tribute to the filmic ouevre of Herschell Gordon Lewis (Color me Blood Red, 2000 Maniacs), the king of grindhouse and exploitation cinema of the 60s and 70s, director Lee Demarbre's (Jesus Christ Vampire Hunter, The Dead Sleep Easy) homage can't be seen as anything but good, bloody, campy fun. And there's nothing wrong with that. Featuring a cast of grindhouse and/or B-movie legends like David Hess (the original Last House on the Left), Michael Berryman (the original The Hills Have Eyes), and Ray Sager (the original Wizard of Gore himself!), plus a H.G. Lewis appearance and a mainstream(!) film debut for adult film starlet Sasha Grey, Smash Cut tells the story of down-and-out movie director Able Whitman (Hess, looking like he's having

Last Thursday we caught Adam Mason’s ambitious indie film Blood River (review here). While I don’t fully agree with Butane (who saw it at the Boston Underground Film Festival), it is one of the better horror-y things we’ve seen so far. It’s extremely reminiscent of Richard Stanley’s Dust Devil, but no matter what you’re expecting, Blood River goes places you absolutely will not anticipate.
Friday was pretty light on horror fare as well. This gave us a much needed chance to catch up with our real lives, as the only "must see" was the midnight screening of Tokyo Gore Police director Yoshihiro Nishimura’s latest splat-tastic experiment: Vampire Girl vs. Frankenstein Girl (review here).
At the post screening Q&A Nishimura teamed up with Alamo Draft House founder Tim League (standing in for co-director Naoyuki Tomomatsu), dressing up in sumo diapers and terrorizing the audience with their asses.
