The satirical spy-thriller “The Sympathizer” hopes to make a mark at the Primetime Emmys this year, as HBO/Max has submitted the show for 27 Emmy categories. The hopeful bids from creators Park Chan-wook and Don McKellar include acting recognition for breakout performer Hoa Xuande and superstar Robert Downey Jr., as well as outstanding limited or anthology series.
Based on Viet Thanh Nguyen’s 2015 debut novel, “The Sympathizer” tells the story of “The Captain” (Xuande), a North Vietnamese soldier in the South Vietnamese army who is forced to flee to the United States with his general near the end of the Vietnam War. While living within a community of South Vietnamese refugees, he continues to spy on the community, struggling between his original loyalties and his new life.

Park Chan-wook doesn’t actually know how Robert Downey Jr. responded to his characters in “The Sympathizer.”
The acclaimed Korean director worked with Downey for the first time while adapting Viet Thanh Nguyen’s bestselling novel for HBO, and he expected a big-name star at that level to drag out the negotiation process after getting an offer. To Park’s surprise, Downey circled back quickly, and the two of them started to dig into his character — his characters.
Downey, who also executive produced the series along with wife Susan, plays four characters (so far) in the limited series, each with a unique look and voice and motivations — all of which were built in process. There’s C.I.A. agent Claude, the Orientalist Professor Hammer, filmmaker Niko, and Congressman Ned Godwin, and Downey appears to thoroughly enjoy embodying every single one. A version of this story about the designers behind “Angelyne,” “Impeachment: American Crime Story” and “Pam & Tommy” first appeared in the Down to the Wire: Drama issue of TheWrap’s awards magazine.
A nostalgic look in the rearview mirror is nothing new for television creators. But it is unusual when so many mine the same era, in this case reframing controversial personalities and events from the recent past. The frenetic landscape of the 1980s smashing directly into the 1990s was omnipresent in three different limited series: Peacock’s “Angelyne,” FX’s “Impeachment: American Crime Story” and Hulu’s “Pam & Tommy”. They not only provided viewers with a satisfying reintroduction to the excesses of those decades, but also gave their leading female characters a dissecting reevaluation. And the designers on all three projects were vital to the series’ success.

Viewers of the Emmy-nominated Angelyne on Peacock might be surprised to learn just how little of star Emmy Rossum they actually saw. Rossum said during a panel appearance at Deadline’s Contenders Television: The Nominees event that 10 prosthetic pieces transformed her face and body into that of Los Angeles billboard queen Angelyne.
“Nothing of me is me,” Rossum said. “There’s two contact lenses in each eye. There’s a chest piece that wraps around up into the neck and the hairline. Even earlobes, hands — everything is not recognizable [as myself].”
Contenders TV: The Nominees — Deadline’s Complete Coverage
Emmy-nominated makeup department head Kate Biscoe said the prosthetics created a unique paradox. Biscoe normally is tasked with making prosthetic material look like human skin. However, Angelyne herself has altered her body with plastic surgery.

“It’s very rare to be able to tell a story which is so much about artifice,” reveals costume designer Danny Glicker about “Angelyne.” For our recent webchat he adds, “The ultimate goal was to tell the truth about someone who is fabulously invested in creating an external aesthetic that ultimately taps into expressing a deeply felt truth. That’s always been the wonderful tension of how Angelyne presents herself.” Watch the exclusive video interview above.
The Peacock limited series stars Emmy Rossum as the title character, a real life celebrity from the 1980s who rose to prominence through appearing on billboards in Los Angeles. It uses talking heads to help tell the story and explores a Hollywood Reporter article on the celebrity from 2017.

The “Ghostbusters” franchise has gone through quite a few permutations in the decades since director Ivan Reitman’s original feature was released in 1984. And while the kooky spirit and basic concept of the first film remain unchanged in each iteration, from the two ’90s animated TV series to 2016’s gender-swapped reboot, the property itself is continually in a creative flux. It’s no wonder it’s going through yet another change — and showing marked growing pains in the process. Director/ co-writer Jason Reitman’s “Ghostbusters: Afterlife” hits the reboot button once more, this time carrying a familial cinematic legacy. Yet with all the nostalgia packed into the picture, its own refurbished identity is slightly compromised, functioning as .
Rebuilding from the past is the guiding sentiment of this feature, not only in terms of one family renovating their lives, but also in the way Reitman and co-writer Gil Kenan reconstruct elements foundational to the franchise.

Ruth E. Carter made Oscar history last year when she became the first African American to win Best Costume Design. After earning nominations in 1993 and 1998, the third time proved to be the charm when she won in 2019 for “Black Panther” (coincidentally her pal Spike finally won his first Oscar that night for his “BlacKkKlansman” screenplay). Carter could well win a bookend this year for her work on “Dolemite Is My Name.”
In this well-received biopic, Eddie Murphy portrays Rudy Ray Moore, a comedian who proved the naysayers wrong when he became a film star in the 1970s. That decade has come back into fashion with the costume designers branch of the academy, reaping bids for Danny Glicker (“Milk” 2009), Michael Wilkinson and Mark Bridges.

For Sony’s “The Front Runner,” which opens wide Nov. 21, director-co-writer Jason Reitman dealt with a very large main cast. The opening shot sets the tone for the movie as it takes in multiple groups of people with different points of view and overlapping conversations. In Robert Altman-esque fashion, various dialogues fade in and out as the always-traveling camera follows Democratic presidential candidate Gary Hart (Hugh Jackman), his family, his political team, journalists and the public during the campaign of 1988 as it moves headlong into a sex scandal and its aftermath. While this creative approach makes for a mesmerizing experience for the audience, it presented unusual challenges for Reitman’s below-the-line team. Here’s what he said about the crew.
Sound mixer, Steven Morrow
“Our movie centers on the idea ‘What is relevant? What is important?’ and the audience is often given multiple things to see and listen to.

Most people associate surfers with wet suits, but on June 5, Bill Pohlad’s Love & Mercy biopic about The Beach Boys’ Brian Wilson reveals an unlikely fixture in California surf culture: plaid. "The Beach Boys wore shirts by Pendleton," explains Los Angeles-based costume designer Danny Glicker (Milk, Up in the Air), who outfitted the actors in checkered blue button-ups to re-create the cover of the band’s 1962 album, Surfin’ Safari. "At the time, the shirts created a distinct visual that came to embody the fantasy of Southern California." Proof of the brand’s comeback? New fans

Relative newcomer Michael Lannan and acclaimed director Andrew Haigh ("Weekend") have created a remarkable new series with "Looking" that just wrapped up its first season Sunday night. Already picked up by HBO for another season, the show centers on Patrick (Jonathan Groff), a somewhat naive video game developer in San Francisco on the cusp of turning 30 and finally coming into his own. He's surrounded by two friends who have some issues of their own; Dom (Murray Bartlett) and Agustin (Frankie J. Alvarez). The series premiered to strong critical reviews in January, but received some surprising criticism from gay journalists for it's focus on one specific part of the community. Groff says in a separate interview with HitFix that they were all prepared for this because of the hype surrounding the show that it was going to be the gay "Sex and the City" or the gay "Girls." And this was before it even began filming.

The costume designer gushed about working with the star and said she was so committed to the role!
Kristen Stewart said bye bye to Bella and the Twilight franchise and dived into a very mature role, playing Marylou in the screen adaption of Jack Kerouac’s On The Road. While the star is scantily clad in a slew of sexy scenes, costume designer Danny Glicker did a fantastic job dressing her, (and the rest of the cast), in clothing that reflected the post-war era in America at that time — and he said K-Stew was fantastic to work with!

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has released its annual list of invited new members, and it’s clear they’re continuing to try to make their membership younger. On the list alongside veterans like John Hawkes and David Duchovny are a slew of twentysomethings, including Mia Wasikowska, Ellen Page, Jesse Eisenberg, Mila Kunis, Beyonce Knowles, Jennifer Lawrence, and Rooney Mara. The Board of Governors also decided to extend an invitation to Restrepo codirector Tim Hetherington, the first time Academy membership has been bestowed posthumously. As a side note, it’s also a hoot to now say the phrase Oscar voter Russell Brand.

Beverly Hills, CA . The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences is extending invitations to join the organization to 178 artists and executives who have distinguished themselves by their contributions to theatrical motion pictures. Those who accept the invitation will be the only additions in 2011 to the Academy.s roster of members.
.These individuals are among the best filmmakers working in the industry today,. said Academy President Tom Sherak. .Their talent and creativity have entertained moviegoers around the world, and I welcome each of them to our ranks..
The Academy.s membership policies would have allowed a maximum of 211 new members in 2011, but as in other recent years, several branch committees endorsed fewer candidates than were proposed to them. Voting membership in the organization has now held steady at just under 6,000 members since 2003.
In an unprecedented gesture, the list of new members includes documentary filmmaker Tim Hetherington, who was killed in action in Libya in April.

The Costume Designers Guild (Cdg) weighed in with their winners last night awarding The Young Victoria (Sandy Powell) the award for Excellence in Period Film, Crazy Heart (Doug Hall) the award for Excellence in Contemporary Film and Terry Gilliam's The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus (Monique Prudhomme) the award for Excellence in Fantasy Film.
Of the three winners, Young Victoria and Parnassus are also nominated for the Oscar in Best Costume Design along with Janet Patterson's work in Bright Star, Catherine Leterrier for Coco Before Chanel and Colleen Atwood for Nine. It should be mentioned that Coco Before Chanel and Nine were also nominated in the Cdg's Period Film category along with Young Victoria.

The Costume Designers Guild announced their nominees for 2009.
In what's becoming a ridiculous set of snubs, Jane Campion's Bright Star was once again ignored for much less remarkable achievements (odd considering how much the costumes are actual part of the movie's plot). After the egregious snub by the Cinematographers Guild it's been clear how much people have decided to just pretend the movie doesn't exist.
You didn't have to like the film to see how great the cinematography and costumes were, right?

MakingOf secured exclusive footage with the team that collaborated directly with director Jason Reitman to bring his vision for "Up in the Air" to the screen. This feature highlights interviews with some of the crew including: Producer Ivan Reitman, Director of Photography Eric Steelberg, Production Designer Steve Sakland, Costume Designer Danny Glicker and Editor Dana E. Glauberman.
In addition to highlighting their individual roles, the segment showcases the detail that went into every aspect of George Clooney's character Ryan Bingham's life. From designing hotel rooms with Ryan in mind to carefully selecting a wardrobe that would fit in a carry-on bag, the team created an atmosphere that romanticized travel and brought the script to life in a believable way.
The film opens nationwide on December 25th.

It’s time once again for horror at the Oscars. Sunday’s festivities were filled with folks who have worked in the genre and per usual, I feel if it’s a win for Danny Boyle, it is a win for rage-zombie fans everywhere. Seems like a lot of folks this year are veterans of Exorcist: The Beginning, Amityville: A New Generation and Gremlins 2: The New Batch. Of course, the most important genre win would be Greg Cannom, a staple of 80’s horror effects; he worked on such films as Fright Night Part 2, The Lost Boys and The Howling.
Now some movies on this list might be “kinda horror.” These thrillers or genre-friendly frameworks are on the ghoulish cusp and are marked with an asterisk. Some flicks on the list are there because, what the fuck,...

Okay, so another year and now it's the final show of the awards season. I don't know why but I'm not that enthuastic about the Oscars this year. Maybe it was last year's underwhelming show or maybe it's because The Dark Knight isn't nominated this year, probably both, but never-the-less the show is done and I want to put up the post of how the show went. Time for the ultimate post-oscar show breakdown...

Best Motion Picture Of The Year
"The Curious Case of Benjamin Button" (Paramount and Warner Bros.)
"Frost/Nixon" (Universal)
"Milk" (Focus Features)
"The Reader" (The Weinstein Company)
Winner: "Slumdog Millionaire" (Fox Searchlight)
Best Picture was a major disappointment. Less said about The Dark Knight - the better. For me, Milk is the most deserving of best picture this year. It's issues are more relevant and more original than all films on the list this year.

Click here for the 2009 Academy Award winners! This year I opted not to break down every category and discuss the merits of each individual nominee. Mostly because it takes a ridiculous amount of time, but also because there doesn’t seem to be as much excitement as in previous years. Maybe it’s the fact that the populist picks of the year (Dark Knight, for example) were snubbed in the major categories and replaced with little seen films like The Reader. Or maybe because many of the categories are foregone conclusions.
Either way, I wanted to post my favorites/predictions and hopefully get some discussion going on what you think will win and why. I’m posting my picks here, but included the full list of nominations below.
Best Picture
Slumdog Millionaire - It’s clearly the favorite going into the ballot counting having swept every major awards ceremony leading up to the Oscars.

Milk earned costume designer Danny Glicker an Academy Award nomination for the movie's painstakingly accurate wardrobe. AMCtv spoke with the designer about the fine art of dressing hundreds of men in Levi's 501s, and the radical heyday of the "Castro Clones." Which scene was the most fun to plan? Definitely the marching scenes. There were hundreds of actors in '70s clothes who were in tune to exactly what we...

In 1977, Harvey Milk was elected to the San Francisco Board of Supervisors, becoming the first openly gay man to be voted into public office in America. There's so much to consider each Oscar Nomination morning but here are 13 interesting notes about the just announced nominees - the industry's own opinion on their 'Best' work.
13 Meryl Streep Continues To Make Things Difficult For Everyone Else
Love you Meryl! Scoring her 15th acting nomination she puts further distance between herself and nearest rival Jack Nicholson who has only (ha ha) a measly 12 acting nominations (one more win than Meryl, though). Just about the only person who might be a threat to Meryl in the all-time record books is Kate Winslet, considering that Kate is only 33 years old and has 6 nominations already. Streep only had 4 nominations by that age (although she had won twice... and Kate is still waiting). [Lots more on Meryl]
12 The Guilds are a Problem
Would Wall•E have gained more Oscar Best Picture traction if all of these guilds didn't declare animated films ineligible? I believe it would have.

Best actress nominee Angelina Jolie said of the recognition she earned for "Changeling": "Working with Clint Eastwood was a reward in itself that will last me a lifetime. To receive a nomination from the Academy on top of that is a privilege beyond any expectation. It has been an exceptional year for acting, and I am honored to be in the company of these talented actors whose performances all deserve this recognition. I am also happy that 'Kung Fu Panda' also was noticed by the Academy and proud to be a part of a film my entire family loves so much."

Brad Pitt's The Curious Case Of Benjamin Button is the film to beat at the 2009 Academy Awards after scooping an astounding 13 Oscar nominations.
The Hollywood superstar is nominated in the Best Actor category for his portrayal of a man who ages backwards.
The film also received nods for Best Picture, Best Director for David Fincher, and Best Actress in a Supporting Role for Taraji P. Henson.
It is an impressive haul of nominations for the movie - only 1997 blockbuster Titanic and Bette Davis' 1950 classic All About Eve have achieved more, with 14 nods each.
Other actors competing with Pitt for the Best Actor prize include Frank Langella (Frost/Nixon), Sean Penn (Milk), Mickey Rourke (The Wrestler) and Richard Jenkins (The Visitor).
Kate Winslet picked up her sixth Oscar nomination, recognised in the Best Actress category for The Reader, and will battle against Pitt's partner Angelina Jolie (Changeling), Anne Hathaway (Rachel Getting Married), Meryl Streep (Doubt), and Melissa Leo (Frozen River) for the award.
Late star Heath Ledger won a nomination for his role as The Joker in The Dark Knight exactly a year after his tragic death.
He will compete in the Best Supporting Actor category against Josh Brolin (Milk), Robert Downey Jr. (Tropic Thunder), Philip Seymour Hoffman (Doubt), and Michael Shannon (Revolutionary Road).
The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, Slumdog Millionaire, The Reader, Frost/Nixon and Milk will all vie for the coveted Best Motion Picture gong at the forthcoming ceremony on 22 February.
And each of the film's directors - David Fincher, Danny Boyle, Stephen Daldry, Ron Howard and Gus Van Sant respectively - are up for the Achievement in Directing prize.
The award nominations were announced at a press conference in Los Angeles on Thursday morning by Academy Award-winner Forest Whitaker, who took home the Best Actor Oscar in 2007 for his role in The Last King Of Scotland.

The 81st Academy Awards nominations are in! David Fincher’s The Curious Case of Benjamin Button leads the way with 13 nominations and the Best Picture noms pretty much stayed the same from the Golden Globes, the only difference being Milk instead of Revolutionary Road. And although many people thought it would happen, The Dark Knight didn’t earn a Best Pic nom and Christopher Nolan wasn’t nominated for directing, but the popular flick did earn 8 nominations in total, including Heath Ledger for Best Supporting Actor. Wall-e also didn’t pickup a best picture nom as many were hoping it would. Instead it was nominated for the animation category and following in the footsteps of The Incredibles and Ratatouille earned a best original screenplay nom, as well as several technical award nominations.
