It’s Halloween time, so it’s not out of the realm of possibility that you’ve heard some Edgar Allan Poe verse in the past few weeks. “The Raven,” most likely. If you had been alive during the time when Poe was still living, your chances of hearing “Once upon a midnight dreary…” would have been just as good.
“‘The Raven’ was a massive hit. [Poe] was a huge celebrity during the time ‘The Raven.’ Everybody knew ‘The Raven.’ People did parodies of ‘The Raven.’ Kids memorized it in school,” actor and literary superfan Denis O’Hare explained in a recent interview
In Eric Stange’s new PBS film “Edgar Allan Poe: Buried Alive,” O’Hare plays Poe in surreal, reimagined moments, performing the writers’ work to empty rooms and slinking through the streets of Poe’s eventual home city of Baltimore under cover of darkness.

New York is the city that never sleeps, and with so many events and activities each week across all five boroughs, it can be hard to know what’s actually worthwhile. Here are the events New York City actors should have on their radars this week. Let the sun shine in.It’s been 50 years since the rock musical “Hair” debuted and changed the face of American theater. To honor the half-centennial milestone and raise funds for the Public Theater (where “Hair” got its start), Diane Paulus will direct a benefit celebration. Featuring stage stars including Jonathan Groff, Caissie Levy, Will Swenson, Allison Case, and several more, the concert will be preceded by a cocktail reception and dinner at Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Frederick P. Rose Hall. Tickets are unfortunately exorbitant, but you can expect video footage to arise. (Tickets start at $750) Tony nominees will get in your face.

As “The Vietnam War” reaches its halfway point Thursday night with Episode 5, “This Is What We Do,” viewers will recognize a familiar face: John McCain. The Arizona senator is one of the most high-profile POWs during the Vietnam War, and his ordeal was brought back into the spotlight during the 2016 presidential campaign when Donald Trump said, “He is a war hero because he was captured. I like people who weren’t captured.”
The PBS documentary will reveal just a fraction of the ordeal that McCain went through after he was shot down during a bombing mission over Hanoi in October 1967. As the son of Admiral McCain, John McCain was an important prisoner and therefore was also interviewed for television at that time. He underwent various beatings and tortures that have left him with lifelong health issues and disabilities.

While spending a career highlighting some of U.S. history’s most notable figures — Jackie Robinson, the Roosevelts, Jack Johnson — Ken Burns has also undercut the idea of the “ordinary American.” Not only finding worthy stories in the lives of titanic men and women who still loom large over the public consciousness, he’s been able to elevate lesser-known individuals from the respective histories of baseball, the Civil War, jazz, and more, showing that those eras and institutions were also shaped by people less often regarded as heroes.
The great equalization of the past is on display once again in Burns’ and co-director Lynn Novick’s “The Vietnam War,” a mammoth, 18-hour history told through and by members from both sides of the ill-fated conflict. Journalists and soldiers, government officials and Gold Star families all add to an understanding of Vietnam, presented without varnish or favoritism. A tale for modern audiences,...

“North or South?”
I remember a high school gym coach asked me this question, wondering which part of Vietnam my parents were from. When I related this to my mother, she became upset, believing that this person wanted to label me as an enemy or an ally depending on their take on the war. And maybe she was right, but that isn’t why I didn’t answer the coach. I simply didn’t know the answer at the time.
Children don’t often know much about their parents’ lives previous to their becoming parents, but this knowledge gap is especially wide when it comes to the younger generation following the Vietnam War. PBS’ 10-part documentary series “The Vietnam War” is here to bridge that gap.

The idea of a “fall TV season” feels particularly antiquated in 2017, as two of the year’s buzziest series (“Game of Thrones” and “Twin Peaks”) have already wrapped for the year. Fall may even be a bit of an afterthought now compared to spring, as networks aim to catch Emmy voters with prestige TV premieres when campaign season gets underway.
And yet, there’s nearly 70 years of tradition with the fall TV season. It’s when Nielsen still resets the calendar for the new TV year; when blue chip advertisers like the automotive sector roll out their own new wares; football season returns (don’t discount that huge impact on TV schedules); and the weather gets chilly, which conceivably means more viewers watching TV indoors.
This year, they’ll find a lot of familiar titles on broadcast TV, including the return of NBC’s “Will & Grace”; a prequel to “The Big Bang Theory,...

CBS’ new entertainment executives took fire from reporters Tuesday over the network’s diversity woes, but stressed that they are “moving in the right direction.”
Newly minted CBS Entertainment president Kelly Kahl and programming senior vice president Thom Sherman hit the Television Critics Association press tour stage for the first time in their new jobs, and were met with several questions about why, for the second year in a row, CBS is premiering a new schedule without any female leads.
“We can debate the pace of change,” Kahl said. “But there is change.” Kahl said the number of diverse series regulars on CBS is “up 60 percent, and the number of writers with diverse backgrounds is up.” This season, he noted that two of the network’s new shows include diverse leads, including “S.W.A.T.,” starring Shemar Moore.

One of the most exciting things about PBS’s time at the Television Critics Association press tour is that, over the course of two days, critics get exposed to programming that covers an incredibly diverse range of subjects, from deep space exploration to nature to great poets to world-changing wars. But this summer, many of the panels took at least a moment to acknowledge the currently precarious state of public television programming in the United States, due to a proposed federal budget that would eliminate funding for PBS.
As reported on Sunday, PBS president and CEO Paula Kerger explained to critics that should the proposed budget go through, PBS had “no Plan B” for what would happen next. Many of the other speakers who appeared over the following two days had plenty to say about what effect this would have on the kind of programming they create, should this budget pass.

While famous for his snarky impressions of Matthew McConaughey and Brad Pitt on Saturday Night Live, Taran Killam is now busy taking on his biggest real-life persona: King George III in the hit Broadway musical Hamilton, taking over the role from Rory O’Malley and following Jonathan Groff, who was nominated for a Tony for his performance.

Musical sensation “Hamilton” is revered for its inclusiveness — but that diversity doesn’t extend to age or body type, longtime show business player Bruce Vilanch said. The stage and screen writer recently visited “Hamilton” creator Lin-Manuel Miranda when the newly-minted Hollywood darling was performing the show’s title role. Vilanch wasn’t shy in pitching himself for the part of the villainous King George — a role previously held by actor Jonathan Groff. “I went back and saw Lin-Manuel and I said, ‘I want to play the King. One costume, three songs that are all the same and no stairs to climb?...

Shooting at the Florida theme park gave the cast new opportunities to explore – and reminisce about past visits.

The Johnsons are going to Disney World – and it's not all pixie dust and giant turkey legs. (Though the latter are a key ingredient.)
"Vacations bring out the best and worst in families," black-ish executive producer Jonathan Groff tells People. "It's never not stressful and it's never not memorable."
In the third season premiere of the hit ABC sitcom, family patriarch Dre (Anthony Anderson) and (pregnant!) wife Rainbow (Tracee Ellis Ross) take their four kids to the Happiest Place on Earth – with Dre trying to make sure the kids have the happiest time imaginable.
"There's the downside to that, which...

Getting tickets to Hamilton is nigh impossible, but seeing the hit Broadway show in its entirety may someday not be — if you’re willing to have your Hamilton experience not be live. The production in the Richard Rodgers Theatre will be filmed before Lin-Manuel Miranda exits the lead role. Miranda confirmed the date of his final performance date (July 9) and talked about the plans to film the show with reporters at a breakfast event this morning. Miranda is departing the show after a long run in the role of the ten-dollar founding father — the musical debuted off-Broadway in January 2015 before moving to the Rodgers last July. Next stop for Miranda: Hollywood. He will star alongside Emily Blunt in Mary Poppins Returns, he has Moana with his original music opening this November, and he’s producing a film adaptation of his first Tony-winning musical In the Heights. And we’re sure there are plenty more projects to come for Miranda in Tinseltown. As for what exactly is happening to the footage of the show, Miranda says he doesn’t know, throwing in a Harry Potter reference as he tweeted that it’s likely to remain tucked away unseen for a while. 2) What are we doing with that footage? No idea. Throwing it in a vault at Gringotts for a bit probly. But we're getting it. — Lin-Manuel Miranda (@Lin_Manuel) June 16, 2016 So it won’t be live on pay-per-view like Laura Benanti-Zachary Levi show She Loves Me (recently announced to be the first Broadway show broadcast live). Hamilton is probably really being filmed for posterity with no real plan of where and when that footage will show up. But maybe the Hamilton original cast* show will end up on TV too eventually or maybe for limited events screened in movie theaters. One can hope. *By original cast, we’re not sure whether they mean the true original Broadway cast — Miranda will be there but already exited cast members like Jonathan Groff may not be back for this taping. In the meantime, catch segments of Hamilton staged for the Tony Awards telecast, look forward to the PBS documentary, and pray you’ll get to see the touring cast somewhere someday soon. And listen to that cast recording for the 14,289th time.

This year marks a quarter century of groundbreaking theater at Moisés Kaufman’s Tectonic Theater Project, and the celebrated theater-maker and friends are ringing it in with style at Tectonic at 25! The 25th anniversary benefit performance will hit Nyu Skirball in New York City on Nov. 7 with host Jane Fonda. The event, which Kaufman will direct, is scheduled to include reimagined excerpts from award-winning Tectonic Theater classics like “The Laramie Project,” “Gross Indecency: The Three Trials of Oscar Wilde,” “The Tallest Tree in the Forest,” “33 Variations,” “I Am My Own Wife,” and “Carmen: An Afro-Cuban Jazz Musical.” The roster of stage and film talent to take the spotlight and perform that evening has yet to be announced, but given Kaufman’s reputation and Fonda’s attachment, we expect theater legends and legends-in-the-making to participate. With a host committee that includes Sir Ian McKellen, Sally Field, David Hyde Pierce, Darren Criss, Jonathan Groff, and more, the Tectonic Theater Project has established itself as a leading company for politically and socially conscious theater. Tickets for the Nov. 7 event are...
