The Shape is back! Well, of course he is. He can't be killed, after all, and the "Halloween" franchise must go on to ensure that Michael Myers will still be terrorizing the fine folks in Haddonfield for generations to come. "Halloween 6: The Curse of Michael Myers" continued the trend established in "Halloween 4" and "Halloween 5" of weirdly copying the sequel titles of the "Pink Panther" movies starring Peter Sellers. There was "The Return," then "The Revenge" and now it was time to dive a little deeper into "Halloween" lore, for better or worse.
Honestly, it was something of a miracle that "Halloween 6" even got made at all. After becoming the first in the series to actually premiere on Friday the 13th, "Halloween 5" was the lowest grossing movie of the franchise when it opened in October of 1989. After the development for "Halloween 6" stalled multiple times due to legal issues,...

The Shining‘s Shelley Duvall is making her return to acting after a twenty year hiatus in the upcoming creature feature The Forest Hills – and Michael and Jessica Kolence of the YouTube channel Grimm Life Collective happen to be producers on that movie, which opened the door to them getting the chance to spend the day with Duvall. As part of that day, they conducted an interview with Duvall, and the video of that interview can be seen at the bottom of this article. It’s a very nice, sweet interview, as the Kolences express a lot of love for Duvall’s work as they discuss projects like Popeye, Faerie Tale Theatre, and of course, The Shining.

Those posters can be seen at the bottom of this article.

Scott Goldberg‘s The Forest Hills will bring together Edward Furlong (Terminator 2), Dee Wallace (The Howling), and Shelley Duvall (The Shining), with the film notably marking Duvall’s first movie appearance in two decades(!). Duvall is featured in a new trio of character posters that were debuted today, and Bd also has another exclusive casting announcement.
Jamie Marsh has joined the cast of the upcoming werewolf horror movie, re-teaming with his Brainscan co-star Edward Furlong.
Chiko Mendez, Felissa Rose, Linda Flores, Marianne Hagan, and Stacey Nelkin also star.

Last week, we learned that The Shining‘s Shelley Duvall is returning to the screen in the creature feature The Forest Hills, the first movie she has made in twenty years. There’s a new Halloween movie in theatres and on the Peacock streaming service right now – and it looks like Halloween Ends (read our review Here) is going to be a divisive one for fans of the franchise. So to coincide with the release of that film, we have decided to look back at another divisive entry in the Halloween franchise: the sixth one, which was released in 1995. Halloween: The Curse of Michael Myers (watch the theatrical cut Here and the producer’s cut Here). But we’re not here to tear Curse down. We’re here to say some positive things about this Black Sheep of the Halloween series. To find out why we think it deserves more appreciation, check out the video embedded above.

"Halloween" as we know it comes to a close when "Halloween Ends" hits theaters and Peacock on October 14. Over the last 44 years, the Michael Myers saga has bestowed fans with plenty of tricks and treats and numerous characters we've come to cherish. What started as a low-budget indie film helmed by John Carpenter, Debra Hill, and a scrappy team of actors and crew ignited a slasher phenomenon.
After 14 films, including Rob Zombie's 2007 remake and its sequel, the most well-known horror franchise is finally burying the Boogeyman — at least according to the original mastermind, John Carpenter. Although, Carpenter has said recently he wouldn't be surprised if the franchise carried on. "I guarantee you if 'Halloween Ends' makes a lot of money, guess what? Just guess what," he told a crowd at Pennsylvania's Steel City Convention.
We're celebrating the end of an era with a ranking of the franchise's 12 best characters.

I’ve always been 50/50 on this film and the first reason which is constantly argued about is the whole premise of the curse of Thorn. As much as I like to believe that Myers truly is the boogeyman, part of me can’t help but think that’s just too easy by the 6th installment. And maybe it’s just because one by one the sequels already start to allude to that, but once Tommy Doyle explains what the curse of Thorn means, it sort of makes sense. Maybe it wouldn’t have made sense in the original, but once you start throwing sequels in there, the curse of Thorn doesn't sound all that bad.
There are, I think, a lot of things to like about this film. It makes some very nice homage’s to the original. Danny dropping the pumpkin,...

It’s refreshing when someone gets it right. Set against the backdrop of picturesque rural Kentucky, “Last Kind Words” works at spinning a tale of the sins of the past coming back to haunt the next generation.
A teenager named Eli and his parents move to an isolated farm to take on laborer jobs. His family life is a dysfunctional cocktail of alcoholism and rage on his father’s part, and complacency and submission on his mother’s.

Bridesmaids – Kristen Wiig, Maya Rudolph, Rose Byrne
Priest – Paul Bettany, Cam Gigandet, Maggie Q

Priest
The Stars: Paul Bettany, Cam Gigandet, Maggie Q
The Plot: A priest (Bettany) disobeys church law in order to track down the vampires who kidnapped his niece.
The Buzz: I’ve got to be honest, I think this film looks horrible. It’s ‘Movie of the Week’ strictly as a path of least resistance. If I happen to have any regular readers out there, they’re certain to know that I’m not going anywhere near Bridesmaids, not even with a blindfold, and so Priest suddenly shines with promise — relatively speaking of course.
Priest continues director Scott Charles Stewart’s working affair with Paul Bettany (whom last teamed together on the unimpressive Legion). Bettany bugs me a bunch, anyone else? I’ve just never taken him well,...

The Stake Land ‘Belle’ Movie Trailer has premiered. Jim Mickle‘s Stake Land (2010) stars Danielle Harris, Nick Damici, Connor Paolo, Kelly McGillis, and Michael Cerveris. Stake Land’s plot synopsis: “America is a lost nation. When an epidemic of vampirism strikes, humans find themselves on the run from vicious, feral beasts. Cities are tombs and survivors cling together in rural pockets, fearful of nightfall. When his family is slaughtered, young Martin (Gossip Girl’s Connor Paolo) is taken under the wing of a grizzled, wayward hunter (In the Cut’s Nick Damici) whose new prey are the undead. Simply known as Mister, the vampire stalker takes Martin on a journey through the locked-down towns of America’s heartland, searching for a better place while taking down any bloodsuckers that cross their path. Along the way they recruit fellow travellers, including a nun (Kelly McGillis) who is caught in a crisis...

While stumbling around the cyber maze for our weekly Wtf Friday video feature, we came across a pretty bitching untitled viral video that does a hell of a lot more than just bare its fangs.
Upon doing some digging (well okay, all we really did was click the "Show More" button on YouTube), it's become apparent that said viral is actually a video for Jim Mickle’s post-apocalyptic vampire tale Stake Land (review here). Having just watched the flick, we can honestly say this vampire tale is pretty damned epic. As you'll see from the video, these creatures aren't the usual sparkling, brooding, pretty forever-teens that have been jammed down our throats over the last several years. They're blissfully ugly, unabashedly vicious, and just what we needed!
To keep track of this vampire uprising, keep an eye on the On to New Eden website.

*Full disclosure: a screener of this film was provided by Gravitas Ventures.
Director: Mike Nichols.
Writer: Mike Nichols, Kohta Asakura, Charles Black, Sam Freeman, and Anthony Masi.
Bread Crumbs is a low budget production from director Mike Nichols (Dead Calling) and a collaboration of writers, listed above. This title was released January 25, 2011 on DVD, with a recent showing on video-on-demand, through Gravitas Ventures (February). Bread Crumbs updates the age-old "Hansel and Gretel" story, with more blood and less ginger bread houses. The result is more mediocrity, despite the film taking place during a remote porn' film shoot.
Casting must have had a limited budget for this film, as director Nichols also plays one of the lead characters. His acting is that of an ambitious New Yawker filmmaker, who really wants to get his money shots on the shoot right. The other actors include Steve Carey an up-and-comer, Alana Curry...

There seems to be no shortage of modern day fairy tales turned to horror these days. With all the talk about Hansel and Gretel turning to action heroes and Little Red Riding Hood wanting to lose her virginity, it's no surprise really to find Bread Crumbs waiting patiently for me in my pile to review. I've said a few times now that Hansel and Gretel is one of the all time creepiest fairy tales, but Mike Nichol's Bread Crumbs seems to take the story into very unfamiliar territory. There's nothing wrong with change of course, but Bread Crumbs ends up being less like a spin on Hansel and Gretel and more of a lesson on how not to update a fairy tale--and unfortunately there is something very wrong with that.

Two Michael Myers veterans - one survivor and one victim - will be re-teaming for another go 'round of brutal murder and madness, albeit far, far away from Haddonfield, Illinois this time. Will they have better luck, or will neither of them see the final reel?
Marianne Hagan (Halloween: The Curse of Michael Myers) and Kristina Klebe (Rob Zombie's Halloween) will topline Bread Crumbs, a vicious take on the Hansel & Gretel fairy tale that freaked me the hell out as a young lad.
Spotlight Films is behind the horror flick written and directed by Mike Nichols (a different Mike Nichols). But the premise has to be among the most twisted and inspired that's come across our desks lately:

Brian Sloan's "I Think I Do" is a lightweight, 1950s throwback of a romantic comedy with a gay twist. Picture those Doris Day-Rock Hudson movies, minus Day, and you're pretty much there.
A little awkward around the edges, Sloan's first feature nevertheless has engaging qualities -- most notably an energetic, charismatic cast and a generous selection of Partridge Family songs. Strand Releasing should expect moderately pleasing returns in specialized markets.
Focusing on a bunch of twentysomething ex-college roommates who reunite at a wedding, the film's back story is established through a series of holiday-themed vignettes in which Bob (Alexis Arquette) not-so-secretly pines for bunkmate Brendan (Christian Maelen).
While sexual tension leads to the inevitable bout of wrestling, Bob's crush remains unrequited. A drunken attempt to force the issue results in a permanent rift in their relationship.
Five years later, getting together for the marriage of fellow former boarders Carol (Lauren Velez) and Matt (Jamie Harrold), we find Bob working as a soap writer in New York and living with the show's self-obsessed star, Sterling (Tuc Watkins). Sarah (Marianne Hagan), who had a brief fling with Brendan, is now a law student working for a senator, while Bob's old confidante, Beth (Maddie Corman), and professional "himbo" Eric (Guillermo Diaz) are both still partying as if it's 1989.
Of course, the late-arriving (literally and figuratively) Brendan, now a Boston schoolteacher, manages to turn the gathering upside down with a not-so-surprising revelation.
Though the farcical elements are played out with entirely predictable results, there's a breezy, Oscar Wilde-meets-Neil Simon quality to Sloan's writing and direction that could take interesting shape as his talent matures.
He coaxes some nice, lightly amusing performances from his fresh-faced cast. While Arquette has a weakness for the "mug" shot, he has good comedic instincts. As much-sought-after Brendan, newcomer Maelen has a sweetly vulnerable presence.
Production values are fine, with kudos to editor Francois Keraudren for knowing how to cut sequences to the aforementioned Partridge Family tunes.
