Conan O’Brien bid farewell do his longtime house band, most members of which have performed alongside the late-night host for 25 years, on Thursday’s Conan, which also marked the host’s final TBS episode in its standard hour-long format.
“There is one change on the horizon that makes me quite sad,” O’Brien said of Conan’s 2019 shift. “In January, when our show transitions to the new half-hour format, our band will not be with us. Since we began this journey 25 years ago, my band has been a daily...

Back in October, an inarguably simpler time, I got the chance to interview writer Matt Miner and editor Brendan Wright on the project they were promoting on Kickstarter, Gwar: Orgasmageddon. Since then, not only did that Kickstarter get fully funded, but it got picked up for distribution by Dynamite Entertainment. The first issue is scheduled for release next month. I got my hands on a review copy, and since I asked you all to support the Kickstarter for this comic I might as well tell you what I think.
Before I jump in there are a lot of credits to this comic, so let me get through that first. The main 18-page story is written by Gwar’s own Matt Maguire and Matt Miner, line art by Jonathan Brandon Sawyer with Matt Maguire, colors by Marissa Louise and Doug Garbark, and letters and designs by Taylor Esposito. Welcome back to the Weekend Warrior, your weekly look at the new movies hitting theaters this weekend, as well as other cool events and things to check out.
Three New Movies May Have Trouble Making Much of a Mark
After a couple impressive March weekends with one new box office record, and a couple impressive openings, we’re now into April, and of the new movies, there just doesn’t seem like anything can defeat last week’s powerful duo of DreamWorks Animation’s The Boss Baby--which exceeded all predictions with $49 million, taking the top spot from Beauty and the Beast. Ghost in the Shell didn’t even do as well as I thought it may, opening with just $19 million, those late reviews helping to kill its weekend.

We've got a funny first trailer here for you to watch for Will Ferrell and Amy Poehler's new comedy, The House. The story centers on a married couple named Scott and Kate who open up an illegal underground casino in their basement to help raise money to send their daughter to college.
I enjoy Ferrell and Poehler's style of comedy, and this film looks like it compliments their comedy style perfectly. From what I'm seeing in the trailer the movie is going to provide some solid laughs.
Ferrell is also producing the film alongside Adam McKay (The Big Short, Anchorman), and it also has a fun supporting cast that includes Jason Mantzoukas (The League, How to Be Single), Allison Tolman (Fargo, Krampus), Sam Richardson (Veep, Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising), Nick Kroll (Vacation), Jeremy Renner (The Avengers), and Rob Huebel (Transparent, Baywatch).

By winning the the highest honor at the 28th annual PGA Awards on Saturday night, the Darryl F. Zanuck Award, La La Land, a critically and commercially successful original musical about struggling artists in Hollywood, further solidified its status as the clear favorite to win the best picture Oscar. Not every past winner of the PGA’s top prize has gone on to claim the Academy’s top prize — just last year, The Big Short won the PGA Ward, but Spotlight won the Oscar. However, 19 of its 27 prior recipients did, and there is plenty of reason to believe that isn’t purely coincidental.

This year’s contenders for best adapted screenplay are quite the eclectic group based on their sources — something that can never be said for those competing for best original screenplay. When looking at this category’s past since the year 2000, can history dictate which type of adapted screenplays the Academy might be leaning toward at the 2017 Oscars?
This site’s namesake, The Hollywood Reporter’s Scott Feinberg, honed in on nine films considered either frontrunners (the first five) or major threats (the last four) in his latest check-in on the Oscar race: Moonlight, Lion, Fences, Arrival, Hacksaw Ridge, Nocturnal Animals, Sully, Silence, and Loving. The original sources for these films are as varied as the subject matter in the works they inspired, so let’s break them down.

Brad Pitt is already a world-renowned actor, a silver screen heartthrob, and a tabloid rumor magnet, but perhaps the 52-year-old’s biggest impact on the entertainment industry will be his wildly successful production company: Plan B Entertainment Inc. — commonly called Plan B.
Plan B was established in November 2001 and, while having gone through a few behind-the-scenes changes throughout the years, it has kept a consistent track record when it comes to churning out movies and TV shows that garner critical, audience, and awards attention. Now, after about 15 years of existence, the company has a shot at earning its fifth best picture nomination at the Oscars on February 2017 with Moonlight.

In the summer of 2015, writer Gail Simone, artist Sergio Davila, and a host of other creators, including luminaries like G. Willow Wilson (Ms. Marvel), Marguerite Bennett (Bombshells), and Leah Moore (Albion), crafted an incredibly fun crossover featuring Dynamite’s female characters called Swords of Sorrow. In Swords of Sorrow, heroes like Red Sonja, Kato, Jungle Girl, Vampirella, Dejah Thoris, and Jennifer Blood among others team up to save the multiverse from the evil Prince Charming, who happens to be huge misogynist, and his allies from the Chaos! Adam Scott revealed something pretty big when he stopped by Conan on Monday: Taylor Swift, human embodiment of sugar and spice and everything nice, embarrassed him in front of his kids during her 1989 world tour's La concert earlier this year. After the Krampus actor brought his kids backstage where they bumped into Chris Rock, Matt LeBlanc, and Sean O'Pry, they all scored invites on stage during Taylor's infamous "Please welcome to the stage . . . Oh, "The Tonight Show." So many hijinks, so little time! Last night, Mark Wahlberg (or as we like to call him Marky Mark) stopped by to play a game of Headshots with Jimmy Fallon, which basically consisted of them shooting arrows at each other's faces. What's not to love?
Jada Pinkett Smith is the luckiest woman in the world thanks to staring in the new installment of "Magic Mike" (best job ever), and she admitted to Jimmy Kimmel that she couldn't stop touching Matt Bomer on set. It's understandable.
Bella Thorne visited "Late Night," where she was asked a super important question about her career: how to take the perfect selfie.

And so it begins -- the serious presidential push, with more and more candidates getting air time on late-night, either in person to mock themselves or to be mocked by the hosts from afar. Republican candidates Jeb Bush and Donald Trump were both featured in (somewhat) amusing political sketches Tuesday night: "The Tonight Show" welcomed Jeb in person, and "The Late Late Show" had a sketch poking fun at Trump's announcement speech. The Donald was not there in the flesh, but it's only a matter of time before the new White House hopeful stumps on late-night himself.
Jimmy Fallon revived his "Slow Jam the News" segment, this time with Jeb Bush on backup.

After nearly 22 years as the host of CBS's Late Show, David Letterman has chatted up mostly everyone. Now the attention he's paid to stars of stage, screen and song is being returned to him in a big way.
Just this past week, some of his most famous buddies – including Bill Murray, Tom Hanks, Julia Roberts, George Clooney and Eddie Vedder – have stopped by to say goodbye to the late-night legend.
More overwhelming, though, are the number of former guests (Letterman has, after all, clocked more than 6,000 broadcasts in his 33 years as a late-night host) who have taken to social media to say their goodbyes.

All week long our writers will debate: Which was the greatest film year of the past half century. Click here for a complete list of our essays. How to decide in the grand scheme of things which film year stands above all others? History gives us no clear methodology to unravel this thorny but extremely important question. Is it the year with the highest average score of movies? So a year that averages out to a B + might be the winner over a field strewn with B’s, despite a few A +’s. Or do a few masterpieces lift up a year so far that whatever else happened beyond those three or four films is of no consequence? Both measures are worthy, and the winner by either of those would certainly be a year not to be sneezed at. But I contend the only true measure of a year’s...

Seth Meyers had the cast of "Parks and Recreation" on his show Tuesday night for their big final goodbye. Amy Poehler, Chris Pratt, Aziz Ansari, Nick Offerman, Aubrey Plaza, Adam Scott, Retta, Jim O'Heir and Mike Schur discussed filming the finale, and revealed their own pitches for how they wanted the show to end. Since it's also the one-year anniversary of Seth's show, they sang an anniversary song for him, but they didn't rehearse it, so it didn't go too well. What did go very well was their "Bye, Bye Li'l Sebastian" song on the way out -- complete with Jim (Gerry) and Aubrey (April) making out, to the surprise of everyone around them.

Kelly Ripa also stopped by "Kimmel," and Jimmy shared a super old-school clip of her chatting about how men and women should alternate paying for dinner. Sigh, a progressive feminist even when rocking an 80s perm and a turtleneck, guys. Also, please prepare yourself for the best dance moves you've ever seen.
Time for a game...

If you're like us and value your sleep, you probably nodded off into your Ambien dreamland before the party started on post-prime time TV. Don't worry; we've got you covered. Here's the best of what happened last night on late night.
Will Smith was on "The Tonight Show" Thursday night. Since Jimmy Fallon is a self-described "classically trained beatboxer," he and Will beatboxed to "It Takes Two," using an iPad app. It took them a while to get into it, but it's good. Will also got the audience involved. It was a big night for performing to and with the audience, as you can see in other show videos below. Jeff Bridges - who has to be one of the best people on our planet - was on "Conan" and talked about his Super Bowl ad. You should watch his "Epic Omming Session" with Conan, Andy and the audience. The first major awards ceremony honoring this past year’s accomplishments on the small screen took place last night as Cedric the Entertainer hosted the 2014 Critics’ Choice Television Awards from the Beverly Hilton. I’ve always preferred the Critics’ Choice Awards to the Emmys, just because my views tend to line up more with the members of the Broadcast Television Journalists Association. This year was no different, as a number of highly deserving actors, actresses and shows were honored.
Allison Janney was the clear winner last night, taking home two Critics’ Choice TV Awards. The actress won Best Guest Performer in a Drama Series for her devastating work on Showtime’s Masters of Sex and also tied with Orange is the New Black actress Kate Mulgrew for Best Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series for her performance as the title character on CBS’s Mom.

Some of the biggest shows on television went head to head. Here's who came out on top.
All the hottest names in TV turned out for the 2014 Critics Choice Television Awards on June 19, held at the Beverly Hilton Hotel. Cedric the Entertainer hosted the gala event presented by the Broadcast Television Journalists Association, and the night was really a battle between two cable channels.
Premiere pay-cable network HBO had a whopping 18 nominations, but in a show of strength for a smaller cable channel, FX topped that with 19. Meanwhile, the big contenders for individual shows were the CBS sitcom The Big Bang Theory, the CBS drama The Good Wife, FX's crime dramedy Fargo, Showtime's drama series Masters Of Sex and HBO's The Normal Heart, all getting five noms each.
Also, Netflix struck a blow against the traditional television hierarchy with their original series Orange Is The New Black competing in several key categories.

It’s that time of year again, and as the networks try to get everyone as riled as possible for the upcoming fall shows, critics everywhere weigh in on the best shows from the previous year. The Broadcast Television Journalist Association (yes, that’s me) have announced the nominations for the Critics’ Choice Television Awards.
I was honored to again serve on one of the nominating committees, and if you think it’s easy to make decisions about such things, you have to really try to imagine a bunch of critics going back and forth about what is, and is not, great television.
It’s going to be an interesting show, and there are some very solid categories.
I’ll give you a little rundown, and you let me know what you think about the nominations and who should win, and especially if you think people or shows were left...

Normally, I wouldn’t pass along news about Top Gear host Jeremy Clarkson, but this one might interest some of you. Following allegations that he used a racial slur, Clarkson is saying he’s been warned by the BBC that any further instances will cost him his job. Seems rather win-win for those of us who are tired of him saying offensive things.
Soap Opera Digest reports that James Scott — who plays E.J. — is leaving Days of Our Lives. Scott already filmed his final appearance but we won’t see E.J.’s exit until the fall.
I’d say I’m going to miss that chest but Days doesn’t feature it very often, anyway.
For Grey’s Anatomy viewers, Isiah Washington‘s return was a polarizing moment. I was ready to consider that Washington may have grown in the time since his Grey’s exit. It...

What would the Party Planning Committee say?
Mindy Kaling may seem like the world’s best boss– but as the actress told Conan O’Brien last night, her employees at The Mindy Project actually refer to her as a dictator.
The reason? She’s not a fan of birthdays in the office. Besides concern over how long it takes to actually sing “Happy Birthday,” Kaling also shared that she doesn’t give out gifts, because she has already given her employees the best gift of all: Their jobs. Sounds like someone has been taking management tips from Michael Scott.

When you’re hosting the MTV Movie Awards and promise viewers “The Biggest One You’ll Ever See,” opening with any old been-there-done-that monologue is no longer an option. Conan O’Brien was acutely aware of that challenge when he opted to attempt the Movie Awards’ boldest coup yet and score 50 celebrity cameos within the first five minutes of the show.
As you’ve now seen, O’Brien managed to pull off the feat. But he didn’t do it alone. Director Troy Miller tells EW how MTV assembled this “whirlwind of a celebrity-fest” (full list at bottom), which included appearances by Taylor Swift,...

But she’s a hormonal teenager. She’s in love with him now.” Peeple also hints that Will and Layla’s storyline should get some major developments soon.

Fans of the 1970s television drama The Waltons were saddened to learn of the passing of Ralph Waite on Thursday at age 85. For nine seasons the actor played John Walton, Sr., a father of seven struggling to make ends meet during the Great Depression and World War II.
"[Fans] tell me that I was their surrogate father, the one who brought them up," Waite told Entertainment Weekly last year.
Indeed, Waite's honest portrayal struck a chord with audiences around the world, and left a big impression on actor Richard Thomas, who played eldest son John-Boy on the series.

Jay Leno, after hosting The Tonight Show for 22 years, officially bid his goodbyes on Thursday night surrounded by a host of his celebrity pals.
Jay Leno's 'Tonight' Show Goodbye
Leno asked Bill Crystal to serve as his guest for his farewell show. Crystal not only was Leno’s first guest, but also his guest at his 2009 “last” show before Conan O’Brien started his unsuccessful tenure as Tonight's host. Garth Brooks, Leno’s favorite singer, was there to sing “The Dance.”
The most memorable music performance, however, came from Crystal and the band of famous faces he recruited to join in on a new version of the Sound of Music’s “So Long, Farewell.”
“There a sad sort of clanging
From the clock in the hall
And the bells in the steeple too
And all the executives that run NBC

"Parks and Recreation" star Adam Scott shared one of his fatherhood woes during an appearance on "Conan" Tuesday (October 1). It seems his four-ear-old daughter has an affinity for Katy Perry's "Tgif," which contains quite a bit of talk about sex and boozing.
Scott says his daughter knows all of the words, but that "the song is literally about blacking out and having a threesome and waking up being being like, 'Well, that was pretty great.' And she's four."
Luckily, the little girl doesn't know what any of it means. Still, he says with a smile, "hearing those words come out of a four-year-old's mouth is really ... pretty great." Unfortunately for Scott, there's one sound the little girl hates: his own voice. The actor shared a photo from an appearance at Dodger stadium, which shows the daughter with her hands over her ears, trying to drown him out.
The joys of fatherhood.
