Exclusive: Swedish filmmaker Tomas Alfredson, now best known as the director behind beautiful, taut features like Let the Right One In and Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, wrote to Swedish screen legend Ingmar Bergman sometime in the early 2000s with an idea. Bergman’s response was characteristically colorful.
“What the hell is this? What do you mean?” Bergman told Alfredson.
Alfredson had told the Persona filmmaker that he wanted to remake Faithless, the 2000 feature Bergman had written about an imaginary woman who recollects her painful experience of adultery to an aging filmmaker. The pic played in competition that year in Cannes and was directed by Bergman’s ex-wife, actress Liv Ullmann.
“This was long before everyone was producing remakes, so it was a very unusual question, especially for Bergman,” Alfredson said.

For a horror fan, the month of October is naturally designated for everything related to Halloween. So this month’s installment of Deep Cuts Rising features a variety of horror movies that take place on or around October 31st. As usual, though, these selections can generally be considered overlooked, forgotten or unknown.
This month’s Halloween-themed offerings include zombies, witchcraft, killers, and more.
The Midnight Hour (1985)
Image: The Midnight Club (1985)
Directed by Jack Bender.
The Midnight Hour is a great warm-up for the Halloween season, right before diving into heavier or scarier movies. This telefilm originally aired on ABC, then later showed up on cable. While it didn’t open to rave reviews, it has certainly found an audience over the years. The plot is simple enough: teens fool around with magic and accidentally raise an evil sorceress on Halloween. As the night goes on, the town is taken over by ghouls and monsters.

The series will move between the present day and back to the original events, which lie four decades in the past.

Closing arguments took place in the double murder trial of Ynw Melly, who is accused of killing fellow rappers Anthony Williams and Christopher Thomas in 2018.

Ynw Melly’s double-murder trial began in Miami on Monday with the rapper’s attorney questioning the prosecutors’ lack of a motive for Melly, real name Jamell Demons, to kill fellow rappers Anthony Williams and Christopher Thomas back in 2018.
“After four years of investigation, the state comes and says, ‘Hey, he killed two of his best friends.’ And you’re wondering why, and their answer is, ‘Uh, I dunno.’ That’s the first indication that they’re just guessing and don’t know what they’re talking about,” Melly’s...

This is the latest attempt to adapt “Galaxy Quest” for the small screen. It was previously reported in 2015 that Amazon was developing a series version that would have reunited the film’s cast, but those plans ended upon the death of Alan Rickman. What's the best "Star Trek" movie? Is it "The Wrath of Khan"? "The Voyage Home"? "First Contact"? Many a Trekkie have said, half or fully seriously, that the answer is the loving parody film, "Galaxy Quest." "High concept" doesn't even begin to cover the film: aliens (the Thermians) who believe that a short-lived sci-fi series was a documentary recruit the cast to help them battle a galactic tyrant.
The sci-fi show in question is a "Trek" parody, a program that was cut short but kept alive decades later by an obsessive fandom. Jason Nesmith (Tim Allen) is William Shatner, the egomaniac who soaks up public adoration so much he doesn't notice how his co-stars loathe him. Alexander Dane (Alan Rickman) isn't a one-to-one for Leonard Nimoy, but his resentment of playing the alien "Dr. Lazarus" is in line with Nimoy's autobiography, "I Am Not Spock". Sigourney Weaver, a silver screen...

Swirling, swirling, swirling, all down the drain. Passed over for a promotion -- scratch that -- fired from his job, helplessly watching as all his hopes and dreams go right down the toilet, David Howard has a moment of clarity. He will follow the path of the counter-culture idols he grew up adoring, those maggot-infested hippie roadsters of Easy Rider. He will sever all ties, and drop out. Well, most ties. His marriage must stay intact. And they've gotta have a place to live. And a way of paying for it. Plus living expenses. And you know, not all ties are bad... probably best to hold onto a necktie or two, in case the whole plan goes bad. Not that it ever would...! These are,...

Galaxy Quest is one of those films that I can watch over and over again. I will never get tired of this movie. It’s not just a hilarious Star Trek parody, but it’s also just an awesome movie overall that entertains in every way.
I’m surprised I haven’t done a fun facts list on it yet, but I’ll remedy that now. I would actually love to see a Galaxy Quest sequel. It’s something the original cast would be up for. Instead, we’re getting an Amazon TV series. Hopefully, it will be good!
While we wait for any additional details on that, here are 16 fun facts about Galaxy Quest.
The following information was found on IMDb, but I’ve added my own commentary as well as images and video to show some things off.
Sam Rockwell based the portrayal of his character on Bill Paxton's performance in Aliens.

Kitzer's business network – known as The Fraternity – was behind several infamous major multi-million dollar schemes.
Downey would potentially play Kitzer in a film described by The Hollywood Reporter as "Wolf of Wall Street meet Goodfellas".

For all of his Marvel movie success, the projects in between the comic book blockbusters haven't been particularly memorable for Robert Downey Jr. Last year's awards season bait "The Judge" whiffed fairly hard aside from a token Oscar nomination for Robert Duvall. “Never give up. Never surrender.” Truer words have never been spoken. In 1999, the science fiction genre was shaken up a bit by a movie so smart and so funny that no other film has managed to duplicate its greatness ever since. That film is Galaxy Quest, a hilarious satire of all things sci-fi, most specifically the Star Trek franchise. Galaxy Quest isn’t simply a parody of Star Trek, though. It’s a parody of a show within a movie that bears an extraordinary resemblance to Star Trek, and this goofy send-up is the perfect recipe for intelligent humor, dazzling special effects, and pure movie magic.

Last week, we reported that Google's YouTube mobile app was back in the Windows Phone store after a three month absence. While it returned with a number of new features, the only one that mattered to Google (who ordered Microsoft to make the new version) was increased support for pre-roll ads. Clearly, the new YouTube app hasn't been much of an improvement in that category, because after just two days on the market, it has been recalled once again. Google is clearly interested in a greater proliferation of mobile ads because of the revenue spike it saw when they became available on Iphones last year. "Microsoft has not made the browser upgrades necessary to enable a fully-featured YouTube experience, and has instead re-released a YouTube app that violates our Terms of Service," a spokesperson told The Verge. Microsoft is obviously sick of getting pushed around by its fellow tech giant.

Some movies will always make me laugh, but let’s face it; the same movies might make others yawn. Comedy is tricky business, the hardest genre to pull off from script to screen. I’ve put together a list of 10 More underrated or dismissed comedies that deserve a first chance or even a second chance at recognition. Humor is subjective, but gives these flicks a chance and I promise you will enjoy yourself.
Check out the first 10 here and 10 more below; let me know what you think and what your list might look like.
Beer League
An unemployed slacker inspires his softball teammates to improve their game so they won’t get kicked out of the local league.
Director: Frank Sebastiano
Writers: Frank Sebastiano, Artie Lange
Stars: Artie Lange, Ralph Macchio
I found a double disc DVD for this in a sale bin (not a surprise) for $5, it was well worth it.

In an interview with THR, Paramount Film Group President Adam Goodman talked about various upcoming movies from the studio. On the subject of animated films, he said, "We feel we have the ability to make these kinds of movies as well as any company does. I can't talk about the project, but Robert Gordon [Galaxy Quest] is writing an original story for us."
For fans of the cult 1999 sci-fi comedy Galaxy Quest, directed by Dean Parisot, with a story by David Howard and a screenplay by David Howard and Robert Gordon, this is great news.
Though the writers don’t have many film credits to their names (with David Howard only credited for Galaxy Quest, and Robert Gordon credited for a couple of other things, including Men in Black II and Lemony Snicket’s A Series of Unfortunate Events; though IMDb says they both have a project called Bizarro Superman in development...

It looks like Superman is dead on the big screen, for the time being at least.
Anyone hoping he would soar again following the recent formation at Warner Bros of a DC Entertainment (Dce) division, tasked with exploiting the potential of DC Comics heroes in other media such as movies, is going to be sorely disappointed.
Diane Nelson, the new president of Dce, told MTV: "We actually don't have any current plans for Superman."
She added: "We've obviously done a lot of great things behind the property in our history, and it's a key part of the family, but we don't have current plans behind Superman."
This would appear to rule out the rumoured involvement of V for Vendetta director James McTeigue with a reboot of Superman.
In addition, a movie based on the Bizarro version of Superman, an imperfect duplicate with opposite abilities, was earlier this year being developed...

THR is reporting that Warner Bros is moving forward with several DC Comics' properties, including "Jonah Hex," "The Green Lantern," "Red" and "The Losers." "Superman" rights will soon leave the studio, but a third "Batman" movie could still happen. Are there any other DC Comics' project the studio is looking at? This past fall, Warners quietly hired three of DC's biggest writers -- Geoff Johns, Grant Morrison and Marv Wolfman -- to act as consultants and writers for its superhero line of movies. Johns has already worked up a new treatment for a "Flash" script, being written by Dan Mazeau. The projects Morrison and Wolfman are working on are in the early stages at Warners, whose execs declined to comment. The studio is also taking pitches on sci-fi hero Adam Strange and the underwater-breathing hero "Aquaman," to be produced by Leonardo DiCaprio. Also in the pipeline: "Bizarro Superman" being written...

In the comics universe, where characters are endlessly reborn and reoutfitted, a motto from the 1980s -- "DC Comics is on the move" -- could just as well apply to the current, hyperactive state of the publisher as it relates to Hollywood.
A year after "The Dark Knight" became a worldwide phenomenon, there are more DC Comics adaptations in the works than at any other point since the company was acquired by Warner Bros. in 1969.
Among the projects on front burners:
-- "The Losers," an action-adventure drama starring Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Zoe Saldana and Chris Evans, begins principal photography this week in Puerto Rico.
-- "Jonah Hex," a supernatural Western starring Josh Brolin, Megan Fox and John Malkovich, recently wrapped production in Louisiana.
-- "The Green Lantern," Warners' next big superhero tentpole, is set to star Ryan Reynolds after a long search.
-- Fox has picked up the TV series "Human Target,...

Galaxy Quest does not turn 10 until Christmas, but with all the Star Trek hoopla this month, Paramount Home Video wisely releases the 10th anniversary edition on Tuesday.
This love letter to Star Trek and its fans was the commercially successful and satisfying in joke-filled story of the actors from a cancelled science fiction classic being recruited by interstellar fans in their time of greatest need. Can actors rise to the role of hero? Well, we pretty much know how this will end, but still, getting there is great fun.
Opening with a science fiction convention that is remarkably true in feel, the movie shows us how trapped the performers feel in these roles, along with the petty squabbles that have plagued them for years. Tim Allen plays William Shatner, or that is, the Shatner who felt trapped by Captain Kirk before letting himself in on the joke and embracing it.
