Despite a muted reception back in May 1994 — certainly compared to Spike Lee’s previous film “Malcolm X” — “Crooklyn” has endured for three decades as one of the director’s most treasured films.
At the time, Spike Lee was still in the first decade of his career as a director, and “Crookyln” marked his seventh film in nine years with his “brand” in the popular consciousness as a polemical artist at the vanguard of the ’90s Black New Wave that also featured filmmakers such as John Singleton, Mario Van Peebles, and the Hughes Brothers.
Crooklyn, while fitting within Spike’s collected body of work about the Black experience in America, took a detour in tone from his earlier, more overtly political films such as “Do the Right Thing” and “Jungle Fever.” Contemporary reactions to the film were mixed, and “Crooklyn,” like all of Spike’s post-”Malcolm X” films up to “Inside Man,...

The critically-acclaimed hit Broadway revival of An Enemy of the People has announced a one-week extension at Circle in the Square Theatre. The Ibsen revival will now play through Sunday, June 23, rather than the previously announced June 16.
Producers said today the extension is due to popular demand. The production has done exceedingly well at the box office since its March 18 opening, routinely selling out the Circle in the Square venue. Last week, the play grossed $1,051,306 with standing room only crowds.
Tickets for this extra week are now on sale. A limited number of $39 tickets will be available via digital lottery, subject to availability.
The play stars Jeremy Strong, Michael Imperioli, Victoria Pedretti, Joe Cassidy, Caleb Eberhardt, Matthew August Jeffers, David Patrick Kelly, David Mattar Merten, Max Roll, Thomas Jay Ryan, and Alan Trong.
Directed by Sam Gold, the Ibsen is adapted by Tony Award Nominee Amy Herzog. It began previews on Tuesday,...

After taking a look back at House II: The Second Story (a favorite of mine since childhood), House of 1000 Corpses (which celebrated its 20th anniversary last year), the awesomeness of Tales from the Crypt Presents: Demon Knight, the leg smashing in the Stephen King adaptation Misery, three separate moments from John Carpenter’s Big Trouble in Little China, the “Jason vs. Tina” battle in Friday the 13th Part VII: The New Blood, the “all hell breaks loose” sequence from the start of Zack Snyder’s Dawn of the Dead remake, and the opening sequence of Pitch Black, JoBlo’s own Lance Vlcek is continuing his The Best Scene video series with a look at a moment from the 1994 classic The Crow (watch it Here) – which isn’t just getting a 4K release for its 30 anniversary. It’s also getting a remake.

It has only been 12 years since New York audiences saw a production of Henrik Ibsen’s classic nineteenth-century play “An Enemy of the People.” But unlike that last staging at the Manhattan Theatre Club, the version that just opened at Circle in the Square Theatre on Mar. 18 is a departure, thanks to the vision of director Sam Gold and a new adaptation of the text by Pulitzer Prize finalist Amy Herzog. “Enemy” runs through June 16, the day of the 2024 Tony Awards.
Gold has attracted star-wattage to his remounting of the Ibsen play with Jeremy Strong in the title role of Dr. Thomas Stockmann, who uncovers that the spas that have made his Norwegian town a booming tourist destination are in fact highly contaminated and will cause many visitors to get sick and potentially die. Whether or not the climate activists who interrupted a critics’ preview of Broadway’s An Enemy of the People last week persuasively made their “water’s coming for us all” message isn’t for me to say, but I will note that the disruption spoke very well for this production.
Amy Herzog’s adaptation of Ibsen’s 1882 classic about a Norwegian town doctor deemed “an enemy of the people” for his truth-telling about an environmental health hazard is smart, sharp and relevant. The science vs. commerce debate is uncannily current, as Herzog thoughtfully makes clear. Ibsen created an archetypal situation here — I’d be willing to bet a trip to the beach that Peter Benchley was more than a little familiar with Enemy when he created that spineless, shark-denying mayor of Jaws, and if the activists at last week’s show hadn’t already seen a performance of this production,...

In a clever trick that pulls us into the community about to witness the spectacular downfall of the public figure crusading for truth at the center of An Enemy of the People, a bar descends from above during the pause between acts, with theatergoers filing onto the stage to be served shots of aquavit while musicians and singers perform traditional Norwegian songs. Several audience members stay seated around the periphery when the action resumes. The house lights also remain up, giving us no escape from our complicity as town physician Dr. Thomas Stockmann, played with bristling intensity by Jeremy Strong, is pilloried with ridicule that escalates into physical violence.
Sam Gold’s crackling production up to that point has been deceptively traditional, handsomely staged in the round at the Circle in the Square, with a first act that sets the scene for festering conflict in the warmth and cozy domesticity of Stockmann’s home,...

Update, with Imperioli statement: Climate activists disrupted tonight’s Broadway performance of An Enemy Of The People, bringing the production starring Jeremy Strong and Michael Imperioli to a brief halt as protesters shouted “No theater on a dead planet” before being subdued and escorted out by ushers and cast members.
The interruption came during a scene in the Ibsen play in which the lead character, played by Strong, addresses a rowdy town hall gathering. The scene is performed in the Broadway revival at Circle in the Square with house lights up and some audience members invited to gather in the in-the-round performance space to replicate the town hall setting.
One by one, the protesters stood up from various sections of the audience, removing jackets to reveal t-shirts with climate change slogans.

When climate activists interrupted a production of An Enemy of the People on Broadway Thursday night, one of its stars, Michael Imperioli, initially thought it was a put-on. “I thought maybe the director had asked people to do that,” he tells Rolling Stone in a Friday morning Zoom. So the actor, best known for his roles in The Sopranos and White Lotus, stayed in character, playing the mayor of a town hellbent on silencing a protest by the play’s protagonist, portrayed by Succession’s Jeremy Strong.

Yesterday, we saw the first images of what Bill Skarsgard of the It films is going to look like as goth rocker Eric Draven in director Rupert Sanders’ (Snow White and the Huntsman) remake of the 1994 classic The Crow (watch it Here). There weren’t a lot of positive reactions, with many fans comparing Skarsgard’s look – which Sanders said was a mixture of his own look in the ’90s, “when we were squat-raving in London,” with modern influences like Post Malone and Lil Peep – to Jared Leto’s poorly-received version of The Joker in Suicide Squad. One person who took to social media to blast the look of the new Eric Draven was Alex Proyas, who directed the ’94 version of The Crow.
Sharing one of the images, Proyas said, “Eric Draven’s having a bad hair day. Next reboot thanks.” In the comments, he continued to mock the look:...

We recently heard that Lionsgate has picked up the distribution rights to the reboot of the classic film The Crow (get it Here), which was released by Miramax back in 1994. Before Miramax acquired it, The Crow had originally been set up at Paramount. They decided to let go of it due to the controversy surrounding the on-set death of star Brandon Lee and the amount of violence in the film. So when Paramount acquired Miramax back in 2020, gaining the rights to The Crow in the process, it was like the film had gone full circle. It came back to Paramount. Recently, cinematographer Dariusz Wolski, mentioned a 4K restoration of The Crow would be on the Paramount Plus streaming service soon. While it hasn’t hit streaming yet, Blu-Ray.com announced that the 4K Blu-ray is set to come out on May 7th to mark the film’s 30th anniversary.

This article contains spoilers for The Continental: From The World Of John Wick.
Fresh off this year’s John Wick: Chapter 4 comes the spinoff prequel television series The Continental: From the World of John Wick, developed for television by Greg Coolidge, Kirk Ward, and Shawn Simmons. Running for three feature-length episodes on Peacock, the series follows the adventures of Winston Scott (Colin Woodell), the future head of the eponymous New York hotel that serves as a safe haven to a shadowy order of global assassins. Set decades before the John Wick films, Winston finds himself on his vendetta as he is drawn deeper into the lethal world of assassins, taking on the Continental’s ‘70s proprietor Cormac O’Connor (Mel Gibson).
Filled with explosive gunfights and a quiet expansion of the John Wick shared cinematic universe, The Continental depicts a rise to power for Winston while proving him every inch as deadly as John Wick himself.

Warning: This article contains spoilers for the premiere episode of "The Continental."
Almost 10 years after the original "John Wick" came out of nowhere and blew the minds of action aficionados everywhere, we're now getting our most expansive addition to the franchise yet. The story of Keanu Reeves' gun-slinging assassin with a love of dogs has been told to completion on the big screen, so where else can the franchise go?
The answer, for better or worse, comes in the form of the streaming series "The Continental," which yours truly reviewed for /Film here. Set predominantly in 1970s New York City and following the exploits of young Winston Scott, the series attempts to split the difference between telling a brand-new story with a whole new cast of characters and packing in all sorts of overt winks and nods to the movies everyone loves.

The "John Wick" films are action masterpieces, but let's face it: They're tightly focused on Mr. Wick and his battle against the High Table of assassins. With a world surrounding him that's enticingly rich, intriguingly layered, and ambiguously constructed, there's a wealth of possibility for other stories to be found within that world -- stories that have the potential to be just as exciting.
That's where Peacock's new three-night event series "The Continental: From the World of John Wick" comes in. Written by Greg Coolidge, Kirk Ward, Ken Kristensen, and Shawn Simmons and directed by Charlotte Brändström (Night 2) and Albert Hughes (Nights 1 & 3), the series is set in 1970s New York City and follows a young Winston Scott (Colin Woodell) as he attempts to avenge his brother Frankie (Ben Robson) and take over the mysterious hotel full of assassins known as The Continental.

Lionsgate is resurrecting The Crow reboot after prolonged difficulties taking flight. Under an eight-figure domestic deal, the studio is ready to give the reimagining of the 1994 cult classic the effort it deserves. Rupert Sanders directs, with Bill Skarsgård and musician FKA twigs leading the cast.
Based on the comic book series created, written, and illustrated by James O’Barr, The Crow tells the story of Eric Draven, a tortured soul brought back to life by a crow after the brutal rape and murder of his wife, Shelly Webster. Returned from the dead, Draven channels the regenerative powers of the crow to get revenge on the criminals responsible for his pain and torment. Alex Proyas directs the 1994 cult classic, starring Brandon Lee as Eric Draven, with Michael Wincott, Rochell Davis, Ernie Hudson, David Patrick Kelly, and Bai Ling.

The hottest musical writer of recent years will reportedly be adapting the 1979 film, The Warriors, into a stage musical. Can You Dig It? The cult Walter Hill film is a popular urban grit fairy tale that tells of a night amongst the many number of gang factions in New York City. The movie was based on the 1965 novel of the same name by Sol Yurick and illustrated by Frank Modell. Many character actors were involved with the production in their younger days, including James Remar, who currently can be seen in Oppenheimer, David Patrick Kelly, Mercedes Ruehl, and Lynne Thigpen.
Variety now reports that a source close to the subject has confirmed that Lin-Manuel Miranda is in the works to adapt the movie into a stage musical. The film isn’t exactly West Side Story, but it does involve rivalry between street gangs. The plot of both the film and...

Ron Faber, an Obie Award-winning stage actor whose widest fame came from a brief but crucial scene in the 1973 horror classic The Exorcist, died March 26 of lung cancer. He was 90.

In Chad Stahelski's 2014 film "John Wick," audiences were introduced to an interesting piece of fantastical mythology. The title character (Keanu Reeves) is a notoriously efficient assassin, and he lives in a world where assassination is a commonplace yet well-moneyed profession. There is a strict code of conduct and a complex set of confusing rules and economics that all assassins must follow, lest they incur the wrath of the High Table, the ultra-wealthy guild that oversees the world's many murders for hire.
At the center of the "John Wick" mythology is the Continental Hotel, a posh residence and "safe zone" where assassins are not allowed to murder each other. In addition to the usual hotel amenities — and the booze is top-shelf — the Continental also provides assassins with their many weapons, gadgets, and high-end suits that also serve as body armor. Guns are presented by "sommeliers," who talk about the bullet...

Chad Stahelski and then-partner David Leitch came from the area of martial arts and stunt and made their mark choreographing huge stunt sequences and second unit directing for many films before getting the shot at steering a franchise with John Wick. Leitch went his own way and Stahelski remained welded to Keanu Reeves in one of most fascinating director-star relationships that concludes with John Wick: Chapter 4, the final installment of a action-heavy sleeper hit that grew into blockbuster status as each film grew in ambition and box office grosses.

Dismissed by some critics upon its initial release in 1979, The Warriors has only grown in admiration over the years, and is now considered one of the most imitated studio films of all time.
The film is credited with accelerating the rise of hip-hop culture, with its dialogue sampled by the likes of Ice Cube and Wu-Tang Clan. Its plot has inspired video games like Street Fighter. Its look has influenced everything from Michael Jackson videos to the movies of Jordan Peele.

“Now she has stopped being against herself” concludes the analyst about Seriema (Ismenia Mendes) when it is time to say adieu Lacan. The journey to this point is the journey of the film, one session at a time, some shorter, some longer, as was the style for Jacques Lacan, one of the most original thinkers of the 20th century.
Adieu Lacan, based on the book The Parrot And The Doctor, aka Lacan’s Parrot, and the play Goodbye, Doctor by Betty Milan, who was in analysis with Lacan in the 1970s in Paris, addresses a number of vital issues that are as relevant today as they were then. This “Asking for It” review was first published June 13, 2021 from the Tribeca Film Festival.
Eschewing subtlety for in-your-face urgency, Eamon O’Rourke’s Tribeca Film Festival premiere “Asking for It” is packed with familiar faces, timely messages, and righteous fervor. Trashing the screen like “Promising Young Woman”‘s feisty Gen-z sister, it has all the makings of a solid cult favorite.
O’Rourke has thoughtfully curated an unusually strong lineup for a feature debut, both onscreen and off. Our entry into the film’s world is wide-eyed, sweet-natured Joey (co-producer Kiersey Clemons), a small-town waitress who lives with her grandparents (veterans Patricia Belcher and Wayne Dehart). A chance meeting with an old friend leads to a devastating night that threatens to destroy Joey’s soul.
The change in her demeanor is noticed by Regina, a diner regular who introduces Joey to her friends, the vigilante Cherry Bombers. All of them have...

Starz announced that Peter Greene, Ayomide Adegun and Jeremy Bobb have been cast in “The Continental,” the upcoming three-episode prequel series based on Lionsgate’s “John Wick” film franchise.
First greenlit in 2018, the series centers on the backstory of the titular Continental hotel from the perspective of the manager, a young Winston Scott. Winston is dragged through 1975 New York City in order to face a past he thought he’d left behind and seize control of the hotel, which serves as a meeting point for the world’s most dangerous criminals.
Greene will play Uncle Charlie, a younger version of David Patrick Kelly’s character from the films, who cleans up bodies and crime scenes for criminals. Greene’s previous credits include “Training Day” and “For Life.” Adegun will play Charon, the Continental’s concierge played by Lance Reddick in the films. Bobb, who has appeared in “Russian Doll” and “The Knick,...

How has it taken this long to get a "The Warriors" board game? I know Walter Hill's 1979 action movie is a bit of a cult title and doesn't carry the cache of something like "The Thing" or "The Shining," which have previously gotten the tabletop treatment, but still! The whole set-up for the movie is essentially a board game itself.
One group of hoodlums has to traverse the boroughs of New York and each area has a unique hostile gang wanting to kill them. The film starred Michael Beck, James Remar, David Patrick Kelly and the great Lynne Thigpen (who plays essentially just a set of...

“Don’t Breathe 2,” in which Stephen Lang once again portrays a furious blind Gulf War veteran who fends off a handful of intruders in brutal makeshift ways, is a worthy enough sequel to “Don’t Breathe” — and yes, that’s about half a compliment. The original, released in 2016, was a jacked-up home invasion thriller with horror elements, but as staged (with a classically angled cleverness) by the director Fede Alvarez, it stayed tethered to a certain nuts-and-bolts, drive-in-movie-from-the-past reality. The script was bare bones, but critics liked it in much the same way that they’d liked “The Bourne Identity” — for its analog “values,” which in this case came off as the values of a thriller made with garish ingenuity for the Times Square crowd in 1982. It was the kind of canny exploitation picture that had fed Quentin Tarantino’s youthful dreams, the kind he drew upon when he imagined the...

On Monday, Liev Schreiber posted a photo from the set of his upcoming Ray Donovan film, teasing his reunion with four longtime co-stars.
“I will miss this particular gaggle of actors very very much,” the actor wrote on his official Instagram account. “@raydonovan #comingsoon.”
In the photo, Schreiber is seen huddling up with Kerris Dorsey, Dash Mihok, Pooch Hall and Eddie Marsan. On Ray Donovan, Dorsey played Ray’s daughter, Bridget; Mihok played his younger brother, Bunchy. Hall played Ray’s younger half-brother Daryll, while Marsan played his older brother, Terry.
The acclaimed crime drama created by Ann Biderman aired for seven seasons on Showtime between 2013 and 2019. It centered on Schreiber’s professional “fixer” of the same name, watching as he arranged bribes, payoffs, threats, crime-scene clean-up, and other illegal activities on behalf of his (usually) celebrity clients.
While the series was officially canceled in February of 2020, the follow-up film was announced a year later.

2020 sucked in so many ways, but nobody told the movies. Here are some of my favorite things from a very, very weird year for all of us.
Color Out of Space (dir. Richard Stanley)
Richard Stanley’s return to directing after too many years away resulted in one of my favorite films of 2020 full stop, containing a great, unhinged performance from my favorite actor Nicolas Cage. It’s a neon-soaked nightmare and features maybe the second most disturbing visual of any movie in 2020; I won’t say what it is except that it involves family bonding. This is a bold, confident film, one that's weird, but never cold and disturbing without the nihilism of, say, Stanley's own Hardware. It's a horror film that's not afraid to go to really big places. It presents us with a true, exciting vision. Richard Stanley is back, and he's brought the best Lovecraft adaptation in 30 years with him.

Every single one of us knows the terror of the unknown. Maybe it’s as universal as our collective uncertainty about the future or as specific as your inability to guess whether an abusive family member is going to fall asleep before taking off their belt. Some wonder if the randomness of the world will strike them down without warning or if a broken system of prejudice will collect them for no other reason than the color of their skin. We battle mental illness, post-traumatic stress, bigotry, poverty, and the weight of an inescapable hopelessness that we’re simply not strong enough or compassionate enough to fight together. And so many of us find ourselves alone and drifting, lost in the dark thoughts that will ultimately become our demise.

‘The Warriors’…what a movie! Teen angst at its finest, cool speeches and even cooler fight scenes, and a cult following that can only be described as ‘classic’. From the good guys to the bad guys, many from my generation remember, with great fondness, both the characters from the film and the actors who played them. David Patrick Kelly, the actor who portrayed the film’s antagonist, is one of the most prolific characters in the flick, and the fans will all agree on this point. But now, thirty-one years after movie was first released, many of the original fans wonder about

That co-writer Matthew McArdle remains shocked even after seeing the film he and Max Brallier wrote on the big screen shows how tough the accomplishment proves. Best friends since childhood, the two began their script for Vfw with transparent intentions as far as harkening back to the no-holds-barred VHS gems they’d scour video store shelves to find. Using John Carpenter’s Assault on Precinct 13 as inspiration, they created a group of aging vets decades-removed from service yet still thick as thieves with a drug-fueled, zombie-esque horde threatening to attack their Veterans of Foreign Wars Post in waves. It took seven years, but Dallas Sonnier finally called to say he’d finance it before director Joe Begos, a stellar cast of character actors, and the rejuvenated Fangoria label came aboard.

[Editor's Note: With this past year being another great one across multiple mediums in the horror genre, Bryan Christopher continues Daily Dead's "Favorites of 2019" features by reflecting on his favorite viewing and reading experiences from 2019!]
Doctor Sleep: Oddly enough, my favorite movie of the year was one I didn’t even think I’d bother seeing until about a week before its release. I like both The Shining and Mike Flanagan well enough, but an adaptation of a book I haven’t read that’s also a sequel to a movie that the author hated seemed like a tough tightrope to walk. But an errant viewing of the trailer had me intrigued, and damn if taking a chance didn’t pay off. I get that people have issues with the fan service paid in the return to a certain infamous hotel in the film’s climax, but for me it worked as a natural conclusion to a story that took elements introduced in The Shining and expanded on them without just rehashing or diluting them. I love Ewan McGregor as an adult Danny Torrance...
