The films up for the 2024 Best Makeup and Hairstyling Oscar are “Golda,” “Maestro,” “Oppenheimer,” “Poor Things,” and “Society of the Snow.” Our current odds show that “Maestro” (10/3) is favored to win, followed in order by “Poor Things” (71/20), “Oppenheimer” (9/2), “Society of the Snow” (9/2), and “Golda” (9/2).
This lineup is the category’s second in a row to include a 54% first-timer majority, thus constituting a new trend after 70% remained the norm for the preceding half decade. The present rookie subset consists of “Golda” trio Suzi Battersby, Karen Hartley Thomas, and Ashra Kelly-Blue as well as one artist from each other film: Luisa Abel (“Oppenheimer”), Ana López-Puigcerver (“Society of the Snow”), Lori McCoy-Bell (“Maestro”), and Josh Weston (“Poor Things”).
McCoy-Bell and Weston share their respective nominations with Kazu Hiro and Mark Coulier, each of whom succeeded on two of his previous four outings. While Coulier won for “The Iron Lady” (2012) and “The Grand Budapest Hotel...

There's a scene in "22 Jump Street" where the blundering cops Greg Jenko (Channing Tatum) and Morton Schmidt (Jonah Hill) meet with their boss, Deputy Chief Hardy (Nick Offerman), to explain their latest bungled investigation. Informing them he's putting them back in the rebooted undercover Jump Street program, Hardy comments on the shocking success of the revived police operation, which has recently seen its budget doubled. "As if spending twice the money guaranteed twice the profit," he chuckles.
This meta-nod to the first "21 Jump Street" film -- which refashioned the original dramatic '80s TV procedural of the same name as a raunchy, self-reflexive action-comedy -- becoming an unexpected critical and commercial hit is not even remotely subtle, nor is it intended to be. It's also clearly assumed viewers will innately understand the sly reference to recent Hollywood spending habits -- namely, that studios tend to pour way more...

If the Joker is the most fun Batman villain to play, The Penguin has to be a close second. If you look at actors who've portrayed the legendary rogue, the character seems to bring out some genuinely novel and committed performances. Colin Farrell had unbridled fun playing the Penguin in "The Batman," telling Total Film, "It overtook me [...] I started moving and talking and gesticulating with my hands and it felt like being a kid in the sandbox, man."
Before Farrell and makeup geniuses Mike Marino and Mike Fontaine put their stamp on the Penguin, Stan Winston and Danny DeVito had a go at it for Tim Burton's 1992 effort "Batman Returns." And in much the same way Farrell was able to disappear beneath his prosthetics, DeVito was a little too committed to the role of the Penguin. In a making-of featurette, Winston, who'd designed DeVito's prosthetics, recalled seeing the actor on set,...

Each of this category’s last five consecutive lineups has included a 70% first-time nominee majority, but this year’s rookie group is 16% smaller. It’s happened five times in the last 11 years (including three years in a row) that an acting winner has has also carried along the hair/makeup team for triumphs at the Academy Awards, a trend that Brendan Fraser and the makeup/prosthetics team from “The Whale” (headed by Judy Chin) hope to continue this year. To be sure, the transformation of Fraser into a 600-pound man proved a visually stunning on-camera masterwork, and it would surprise few if the actor and the team in charge of his radically altered appearance were both to be honored with Oscar hardware.
Most recently, Jessica Chastain won the lead actress prize for “The Eyes of Tammy Faye” at last year’s Oscars, while the makeup/hairstyling trophy went to that film’s Stephanie Ingram, Linda Dowds and Justin Raleigh for helping transform Chastain into Tammy Faye Bakker.

To mark the 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray release of Beetlejuice on 31st August, we’ve been given a 4K copy to give away.
What’s a couple of stay-at-home ghosts to do when their beloved home is taken over by trendy yuppies? They call on Beetlejuice, the afterlife’s freelance bio-exorcist to scare off the family – and everyone gets more than she, he or it bargains for! Tim Burton guides this PG-rated comedy monsterpiece whose stars include Alec Baldwin, Geena Davis, and Winona Ryder. And Michael Keaton is Beetlejuice, the ghost with the most who flings one-liners, spins into grotesque forms, gobbles insects, and who just can’t leave the ladies (living or dead) alone. Ghoul love it!

It was on March 30, 1988 when Tim Burton unleashed one of his most wacky, vibrant and endearing original films on audiences everywhere, the madcap supernatural comedy Beetlejuice which firmly established Burton as one of the most forward-thinking visual storytellers of his, or any generation. While the film might have initially been birthed inside co-writer Michael McDowell’s imagination, Burton relied on an array of talents and artisans to help him bring his vision to life throughout production.
On the effects side of things, there were a handful of extremely talented artists assembled to work on Beetlejuice who were tasked with creating not only the titular character, but all kinds of off-the-wall creatures and entities that made the film a standout amongst its peers that year at the Academy Awards ceremony.

There never has been (nor will there ever be) anything quite like Beetlejuice, that inimitable horror comedy concoction hailing from the demented minds of screenwriter Michael McDowell, plus writer/producer Larry Wilson and script doctor extraordinaire Warren Skaaren, filtered through the wacky gothic lens of director Tim Burton.
To celebrate Beetlejuice‘s Los Angeles return to the big screen at the Nuart Theatre at midnight tonight, December 20th, Tfh decided to take a look back at the film’s singular significance 31 years later.
As our tale unfurls, Adam and Barbara Maitland (Alec Baldwin and Geena Davis) are a fairly bland couple in the throes of (bland) domestic bliss. They occupy a pleasant, spacious house in the leafy suburb of Winter River, Connecticut. Adam owns a hardware store up the road, and enjoys whiling away his free time building a remarkably thorough model replica of Winter River while jamming out to Harry Belafonte songs.

• Is Anyone Up For A Possible Fourth Competitive Win This Year?
Why yes, we're so glad you asked. In addition to the previously discussed costume designer Sandy Powell (The Favourite might make it four for that genius), Makeup artist Greg Cannom, who previously won Oscars for The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, Mrs Doubtfire and Bram Stoker's Dracula, might well win his fourth for giving Christian Bale that realistic looking Cheney bald cap and thick neck in Vice. If Cannom wins he becomes the second most awarded makeup artist of all time (after category king Rick Baker -- who appears to have retired? -- who took the Oscar an incredible 7 times). “Vice,” the Oscar frontrunner for Best Makeup and Hairstyling, got a big boost at Saturday’s Make-Up Artists & Hair Stylists Guild Awards. It won both of its bids for period/character makeup and special makeup effects. Its Oscar rival “Mary Queen of Scots” lost the race for period/character makeup but won for period/character hairstyling. The third Oscar nominee, Swedish film “Border,” was snubbed by the guild.
Last year, the eventual Oscar champ “Darkest Hour” won two of its three races: special makeup effects and best period/character makeup. It lost best period/character hairstyling to “I, Tonya.”

Bradley Cooper‘s remake of the Hollywood classic had contended at the first eight guild awards unsuccessfully. “Asib: lost best contemporary hairstyling to “Crazy Rich Asians.

When “First Man,” about the events surrounding Neil Armstrong taking his first steps on the lunar surface in 1969, touched down at film festivals in the fall, critics in attendance were over the moon for its visual effects and technical achievements as well as for the performances of Ryan Gosling as Armstrong and Claire Foy as his wife, Janet.

Five of the seven semi-finalists for Best Makeup & Hairstyling at the Oscars — “Black Panther,” “Bohemian Rhapsody,” “Mary Queen of Scots,” “Stan & Ollie” and “Vice” — reaped bids with the guild, which announced nominations in five film categories on Thursday, Jan. 10 (halfway through the Oscar nominations voting period). The other two Academy Awards semi-finalists — the Swedish film “Border” and Luca Guadagnino‘s remake of “Suspiria” — was snubbed by the Makeup Artists & Hair Stylists Guild.
“Vice,” which we are predicting will win the Oscar, contends in period/character makeup as well as special makeup effects while its closest Academy Awards rival, “Black Panther” is up for just special makeup effects. Our third-place Oscar contender “Mary Queen of Scots” vies for both period/character makeup and hairstyling

Lady Gaga had to go makeup-free during her audition for A Star Is Born (and while filming), but her director and co-star Bradley Cooper really had to layer on the product for his role as rock star, Jackson Maine, who battles alcoholism and drug addiction.

At this point, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences’ governors election looks more like a round-up than a race; more than 180 members have declared their interest in filling 17 contested spots on the 54-member Board of Governors.
Voting in the run-off round starts on Monday and ends May 18. That will narrow the present field to a maximum of four nominees per branch in the final round, which follows.
For now, there are on average about 11 candidates in the running for each slot. In the casting directors and costume design branches, only three members have declared for each slot. But not so in the actors branch, where 17 members — including Brie Larson, Jacki Weaver and Meg Ryan — are vying for the spot being vacated by termed-out Tom Hanks; or the producers, executives, and public relations branches, all of which have a bumper crop of candidates. 'Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl': Johnny Depp as Capt. Jack Sparrow. 'Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl' review: Mostly an enjoyable romp (Oscar Movie Series) Pirate movies were a Hollywood staple for about three decades, from the mid-'20s (The Sea Hawk, The Black Pirate) to the mid-to-late '50s (Moonfleet, The Buccaneer), when the genre, by then mostly relegated to B films, began to die down. Sporadic resurrections in the '80s and '90s turned out to be critical and commercial bombs (Pirates, Cutthroat Island), something that didn't bode well for the Walt Disney Company's $140 million-budgeted film "adaptation" of one of their theme-park rides. But Neptune's mood has apparently improved with the arrival of the new century. He smiled – grinned would be a more appropriate word – on the Gore Verbinski-directed Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl,...

Santa Monica — Michael Keaton has been asked about a sequel to "Beetlejuice" enough times to surely be sick of it by now, because the thing has moved at such a glacial pace there just isn't much to be said. But his work in the original film came at a time when his career was really taking off, and playing in the expressionistic world of Tim Burton in both that film and the first two "Batman" movies was a wholly new and exciting experience for him. In one, he helped build a character from the ground up, while in the other, he found himself at the center of a raging pop culture tempest. Both roles are iconic in their own ways, and looking back, Keaton can — as ever — find nothing but gratitude for getting to be a part of it. "Batman" in particular was a personal landmark, a movie that grabbed...

This is the second year for the Makeup and Hairstylists Guild joining the awards game, and they've been a welcome addition to the circuit. They spread their nods thin across a number of categories, but it's a good window into what this branch digs, for sure. This year, the only two films on the Academy's bake-off list of finalists that didn't garner any recognition were "The Amazing Spider-Man 2" and "Noah." Meaning "Foxcatcher," "The Grand Budapest Hotel," "Guardians of the Galaxy," "Maleficent" and "The Theory of Everything" were each represented in one form or another. Meanwhile, "Guardians of the Galaxy" led with the most mentions at three, while "The Grand Budapest Hotel," "Interstellar" and "Into the Woods" each got a pair.
