The family of Russian journalist Anna Politkovskaya has said an upcoming film inspired by her life is “grossly inaccurate” and misrepresents her work in a statement sent to journalists Tuesday afternoon.
In the statement, the family said it is “very concerned” by the film’s preliminary script, which they say contains “significant inaccuracies” and misrepresents Anna’s life, work, and family.
The film, previously titled Mother Russia, tells Anna’s story as a world-renowned journalist and human rights activist who went from being a local print journalist to braving the Chechen killing fields and exposing Russian state corruption under Vladimir Putin.
Anna refused to give up reporting on the war in Chechnya despite numerous acts of intimidation and violence, including being poisoned. She was ultimately murdered in the elevator of her block of flats, and it remains unclear who paid for the contract killing.
BAFTA-nominee Maxine Peake (The Village) plays Anna in the biopic.

Exclusive: House of the Dragon star Emma D’Arcy has dropped out of feature thriller Anna about fearless Russian journalist Anna Politkovskaya due to a scheduling clash, replaced by Naomi Battrick (The Postcard Killings).
D’Arcy, who broke out as the older Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen in Game of Thrones prequel House of the Dragon, was due to play Politkovskaya’s daughter Vera Politkovskaya in the Cannes Market package which stars two-time BAFTA nominee Maxine Peake (Black Mirror) as lead and is directed by Broadchurch’s James Strong from a screenplay by Eric Poppen.
Deadline understands Battrick replaced D’Arcy several weeks ago in the film that was previously titled Mother Russia, with D’Arcy dropping out due to a scheduling clash. Battrick’s past credits include Danis Tanovic’s Cush Jumbo-starring thriller The Postcard Killings, in which she played Marina Haysmith. She also led Sky’s Jamestown and featured in BBC drama A Very English Scandal.

Johnny Depp will likely take the stand to answer allegations he punched a location manager on set. But it just won’t come next week, or even this year, after all.

City of Lies, the Brad Furman-directed crime thriller starring Johnny Depp and Forest Whitaker and based on the true story behind the investigation into the murder of rap star Notorious B.I.G., has been pulled off its September 7 release date.
Global Road, which acquired the movie’s original distributor Open Road last summer, has not set a new date for the pic, we’re told. It was set to hit screens on what would have been the 46th birthday of the iconic rapper, aka Biggie Smalls, who was gunned down in 1997 in a drive-by in Los Angeles.
The news comes less than month after the film’s location manager sued Depp, accusing the actor of assault and battery on the set in April 2017. Gregg “Rocky” Brooks said he was repeatedly hit by Depp after being informed that filming that night in downtown L.A. was going to have to wrap late.

This week’s lawsuit against Johnny Depp, which alleges he physically assaulted location manager Gregg “Rocky” Brooks on the set of “City of Lies,” is another entry in what is becoming a familiar narrative of the out-of-control and under-the-influence Hollywood star. A recent Rolling Stone profile drew a detailed portrait of Depp as being holed up in a mansion surrounded only by the employees who protect him from himself.
Depp’s profession — the source of income he desperately needs after burning through $650 million — requires he leave that protective bubble. However, Brooks’ suit reveals how Hollywood productions can enable powerful men to be abusive, while taking extreme measures to protect them from legal or public consequences.
The suit also names director Brad Furman, producer Miriam Segal, Segal’s Good Film Productions and Depp’s Infinitum Hill as defendants. When the story of the incident first broke in May, Furman called Depp...

Facing legal action from ex-business managers ex-lawyers and ex-bodyguards plus foreclosure filings and what could be an embarrassing trial later this summer, Johnny Depp has now been hit with an assault and battery lawsuit from the location manager of the upcoming City of Lies.

“A murder like that only goes unsolved if the police don’t want to solve it.” That’s the take of Johnny Depp’s Lapd detective Russell Poole in City of Lies, Global Road’s Brad Furman-directed crime thriller based on the true story behind the investigation into the murder of rap star the Notorious B.I.G., aka Biggie Smalls, in 1997, gunned down in a drive-by at the intersection of Fairfax and Wilshire in L.A.
