James Pope, the gentle-souled dweeb Kyle Mooney plays in Brigsby Bear, is an almost literal man-child, quite literally sheltered. Thirty if he’s a day, James still lives with his eccentric hippie parents (Mark Hamill and Jane Adams), but he has a good excuse: They’re all holed up together in an underground bunker, thanks to an unidentified catastrophe that’s made the air above unbreathable. James’ sole interest, his consuming obsession, is Brigsby Bear Adventures, a low-budget science-fiction serial he’s been watching his entire life; the show, which is basically Doctor Who by way of Barney, arrives like clockwork on VHS every week and features a time- and space-traversing bear whose exploits convey simple life lessons that seem to suspiciously advance in demographic aim as James ages.

A few thoughts on tonight's Supergirl season premiere, and the changes to the show now that it's moved from CBS to the CW, coming up just as soon as I internet-search a calling... Early in "The Adventures of Supergirl," Kara is stunned to learn that the Deo has a second headquarters in downtown National City, which they will now use in favor of the underground bunker out in the desert. "It's kinda like the old place. Maybe better," Alex tells her, in a comment that's as much about the move of network as it is about constructing a new set. Having a base out in the middle of nowhere seemed an apt metaphor for Supergirl's old home — not that the higher-rated CBS is a TV wilderness in general, but that it was a barren, inhospitable territory for one of the Berlanti-verse series to grow. Supergirl always should have been on the CW,...

Hollywood knows that one genre is almost certain to get the audience’s blood pumping and pulse racing: the sports story. Creed certainly proved that a few months ago (you’d think audiences were watching a real live boxing match, judging from the all the cheering at the multiplex). Couple that on-screen excitement with a dramatic true story, and you’ve hopefully got a critical and box office hit. And while professional sports may be tainted and tarnished thanks to bad behavior and big bucks, the amateur athletes still have a purity and nobility about them. There have been plenty of college (We Are Marshall), high school (Hoosiers), and even grade school (The Bad News Bears) team tales, but for individual triumphs, the four-year spectacle, the Olympics, abound in stories of glory and drama. Well 2016 just so happens to be an olympic year, so the studios are launching the first...

Obviously, it was only a matter of time before The Apprentice tackled board games. Lord Sugar must have been waiting for ages to wheel out his "from board games to the Boardroom" line. Luckily, while this week didn't quite reach the battiness of last week's coach trips - probably a good thing for Karren Brady's sanity - board games turned out to be not very boring at all.

Imitation of Life: James’ Sci-Fi Thriller Plumbs Dark Recesses of A.I.
While its ingenious ideas are sometimes marred by obvious budgetary limitations, director Caradog W. James’ second feature, The Machine is a highly enjoyable and brooding sci-fi flick in the philosophical vein of Blade Runner, with a smattering of other similarly minded or styled classics, such as Lang’s Metropolis heavy on its mind. Even though it sometimes looks like a film that seems tailor made for the Syfy Channel, James still manages to create an appropriate atmosphere with its cavernous, dimly lit underground bunkers. An arresting and ambient score reminiscent of Vangelis and early John Carpenter is complimentary to its simple yet hypnotic spell.
In the not too distant future, the UK seems to be languishing in the throes of the preapocalypse as the Western world is heavily engaged in a Cold War with China. The government...

This week, Ology.com’s New TV Preview Week is celebrating our favorite (and least favorite) spring premieres by doing what we do best: watching them in advance and letting you know if they’re worth your time. Each day, we’ll be putting one major show under the microscope, and today, Sharon Tharp explains exactly why you should be seething over Scandal. Warning, spoilers may be ahead.
Show: Scandal, ABC
Timeslot: Thursdays at 10pm
Seasons: 2
The Basics: Olivia Pope is the go-to woman when it comes to making high-profile, potentially life-ruining scandals disappear in D.C. But her past with the White House (and her forbidden affair with the president) often conflicts with her job, and her inherent need to do the right thing.
Why We Love It: Kerry Washington is damn near brilliant as the tough-as-nails business woman with a heart of gold. Her chemistry with Tony Goldwyn...

Well, Craig James' run for Senate hasn't exactly gone as planned; his main stumbling block turned out to be the fact that nobody knows who the fuck he is. Do obstacles like these deter Craig James from pursuing success? No, of course not. Craig James will do whatever it takes to make it on this crazy journey called life, even if it means running a PR campaign to get a college football coach fired for refusing to give your son playing time. Whatever it takes.
Not winning a Senate seat doesn't phase Craig James, because Washington is corrupt and filled with liberal, tofu-eating, gay-marrying, ObamaCaring, fiscally irresponsible, tattooed, Girls-watching, rock-n-roll-loving, gun-hating dickheads who don't know jack shit about America. But Craig James still needs his voice heard. That's why, as CBSSports reports, he's available for television commentary! Again!
What's more, his versatility makes him invaluable for the boob tube.

Adam Levine and Blake Shelton may have been the co-winners of the battle to deliver the best one-liner on this week’s episode of The Voice, but in a surprise turn of events, they lost the war of taking home Most Valuable Judge trophy to Christina Aguilera.
Oh, sure, Blake’s “I almost threw my panties on the stage” was a priceless response to James Massone’s lady-baiting rendition of “Don’t Know Why.” And Adam hit the bullseye poking fun at Blake’s consternation over a group of shirtless male backup dancers: ”I think that Blake just bought a one-way ticket to Boner Town.

This week’s episode of Justified, “Harlan Roulette,” featured the welcome return of Wade Messer (James LeGros), a lot of gunplay courtesy of Dixie Mafia member Glen Fogle (Pruitt Taylor Vince), and a memorable first meeting between Raylan and Quarles. As we’ll be doing each week throughout the season, we asked exec producer Graham Yost to take us inside the writers room.

Kevin James is having a very successful movie career, and is considered one of the funniest men in movies today. But long before acting in movies, James was a funny man on the small screen for nine seasons, as the star of the hit comedy series, The King of Queens. Although the show has been over for four years, James still has a lot of affection for the series that made him a star. (Click on the audio player to hear Kevin James) Kevinjames-onmissingtv

Sometimes we "Idol" prognosticators get it totally right and then there's this week.
All around, we couldn't have been more wrong about what was going to happen on Thursday night's "American Idol" elimination show. After all the Haley Reinhart talk and the certainty that the blues grunter would be sent back to Chicago (where there are, it should be noted, tons of perfectly decent cheesy blues bars eagerly awaiting her return), James' booting was a bolt of heavy metal thunder that came totally out of the blue.
"Season 10 has had more insane plot twists than M Night Shyamalan's filmography!" said MTV News' own "Idol" expert Jim Cantiello. "After surviving last week's results without even landing in the bottom three I thought James was untouchable. His fans protected him through his worst showing on 'Idol,' so if he had a better run on Wednesday common sense would suggest he'd...

A slate of tantalizing match-ups, highlighted by the long-awaited rumble between the defending champion Lakers and the big three of the Heat, delivered ABC and Espn's highest cumulative audience ever for its Christmas Day marathon of games. Unsurprisingly, the Heat-Lakers tilt on ABC was the biggest draw of the day, delivering a 6.4 fast national household rating, up 45 percent over last Christmas' Kobe-LeBron showdown, from back when King James still played for the Cleveland Cavaliers. It was also ABC's highest-rated regular season game since a different kind of Heat-Lakers rivalry game - back in 2004, the first season after Shaquille...

It's hard to say who is the most annoying character in "The Velocity of Gary* (*Not His Real Name)," but the film has three solid contenders.
"Velocity" is derived from a theater piece and one of its three stars is an exec producer, so clearly this movie is tenderly devoted to its actors. A few moviegoers might get off on such over-the-top performances, but the vast majority will find them self-indulgent and off-putting.
Made nearly two years ago and now getting a release in Los Angeles and New York, "Velocity" will move through theaters quickly.
After one false start and several unnecessary time shifts, James Still's screenplay settles into a three-way character study set in a highly cliched world of New York hustlers and street people.
Vincent D'Onofrio plays Valentino, a bisexual former porn actor who enjoys the adoration of a male and female lover. Gary (Thomas Jane), a young stud on the make, instantly falls for Valentino and lets Valentino get him a job as a phone sex operator.
Mary Carmen (Salma Hayek), a waitress in a sleazy all-night doughnut shop, is madly in love with Valentino despite getting treated as little more than a plaything. The two rivals are at each other's throats until Valentino's growing illness from the onset of AIDS causes them to bond in a death watch.
Designed more as a vehicle for its actors than an exploration of the underworld of hustlers, "Velocity" gives each of its three stars multiple scenes of petty quarrels and histrionic tantrums.
Director Dan Ireland worked with D'Onofrio previously on "The Whole Wide World". In that association, Ireland was happily able to channel the actor's restless energy into a fascinating, enigmatic character. But this collaboration produces mere excess. The energy bounces around inside D'Onofrio's lanky body without ever emerging as character.
Taking their cue from D'Onofrio, his co-stars tear up the sets too, but give little sense of who these people are and why they have ended up in such a dispiriting lifestyle. Jane comes off the best, perhaps because his is the quietest and most introspective performance.
Technical credits are OK for working within the confines of a limited budget.
THE VELOCITY OF GARY* (*NOT HIS REAL NAME)
Next Millennium Entertainment

Cast: Valentino: Vincent D'Onofrio; Mary Carmen: Salma Hayek; Gary: Thomas Jane; Veronica: Olivia d'Abo; Kid Joey: Chad Lindberg. MPAA rating: R. Color/stereo. Running time -- 108 minutes.
