Netflix is serving up Dr. Seuss’ classic book “Green Eggs and Ham” with a large helping of traditional animation. The series, created and executive produced by animation veteran Jared Stern, expands the story of the delicacy’s persistent champion Sam I Am and picky eater Guy Am I as they go on a road trip to rescue an endangered creature from a zoo, learning about hope, trust and friendship along the way.
The process of bringing the book to Netflix was a long one, with Stern dedicated to ensuring the production stayed true to the look and spirit of Theodor Geisel’s 1960 story while giving the series a feature-film quality with hand-drawn animation.
“There were four years of actual production. That was intentional, and that’s about normal for the quality of animation that we were aspiring to,” Stern says. “A typical animated film can take close to three to...

Audrey Geisel, who was Dr. Seuss’ widow and an executive producer on film adaptions of his books including the recent “The Grinch,” has died, ICM Partners announced in a statement on Friday. She was 97.
Geisel and Dr. Seuss — the pen name of Theodor Geisel — were married from 1968 to 1991, when he died at 87. Two years later, she founded Seuss Enterprises to license the use of the characters. She executive produced animated film adaptations of some of her husband’s most beloved children’s books, such as 2008’s “Horton Hears a Who!,” 2012’s “The Lorax,” and November’s “The Grinch.” In “The Lorax,” the character voiced by Taylor Swift was named after her.
Geisel is also often credited with influencing her husband to address social issues in his work, such as “The Lorax,” which concerns the environment, and “The Butter Battle Book,” which denounces war and nuclear weapons.

Dr. Seuss is still a household name in the United States and a number of other countries. All of Whoville will have to wait till 2018 to see the remake of the Dr. Seuss classic...
Universal has just announced that the animated remake of The Grinch Who Stole Christmas, in which it has partnered with Illumination Entertainment, has been delayed by a year. It was originally set to release on November 10th 2017, but has been shunted back to November 9th 2018. No reason has been given, but we'd wager it just wouldn't be ready in time.
Benedict Cumberbatch, who showed us just how irredeemably evil he can sound as the voice of Smaug in The Hobbit trilogy, will voice the eponymous green grouch who is bent on making Christmas vanish by stealing every last candy cane. Pete Candeland and Yarrow Cheney will co-direct, with Michael LeSieur adapting the screenplay, Audrey Geisel (the wife of the late Dr Seuss) and Chris Renaud executive producing, and Chris Meledandri,...

Is nothing sacred? It doesn't seem like it, as "How the Grinch Stole Christmas," one of the best animated Christmas movies around, is reportedly getting remade.
Variety is reporting that Universal Pictures, Illumination Entertainment and Dr. Seuss' widow Audrey Geisel are working together to reboot the classic Seuss story. In 1966, Chuck Jones made a version of the tale that has definitely lasted the test of time, and then Jim Carrey starred in a live-action version from Universal called "The Grinch" in 2000.
Apparently two attempts isn't enough, and nothing can just be left alone. It's worth noting that there are plenty of other Seuss tales to cull from ("Hop on Pop," anyone?), but for some reason this seems to be the one that is being brought to the big screen. Illumination is also working on an animated adaptation of "Cat in the Hat."

That "Grinch" movie with Jim Carrey (somehow) made a lot of money and all ... but maybe it's time to forget it ever existed. Hey, we're cool with that.
Hollywood seems to really like where the future of Dr. Seuss cinema is going with the highly successful animated adaptations that have come out recently, so much that an animated reboot of "How the Grinch Stole Christmas" is now in the works, according to Heat Vision.
"The Grinch" was published in 1957 and adapted as a now-classic half-hour animated Christmas special in 1966, which featured Boris Karloff as both the story's narrator and the voice of the Grinch. Jim Carrey didn't sound like Karloff at all when he played the Grinch in Ron Howard's wretched 2000 live-action film (which had so much noise, noise, noise, noise!), but hey, the thing made over $345 million worldwide, so apparently it's us who have the hearts three sizes too small.

Universal made a live-action film version in 2000 starring Jim Carrey. Despite offending Seuss purists, the film grossed $260 million domestic

It’s always a touchy business, taking a revered children’s book and bringing it to the screen in full 3-D. When it’s a story as stylized and personal to its author as The Lorax is, just suggesting the attempt can border on hubris. But in the case of this particular story, producer Chris Meledandri says the idea wasn’t theirs to begin with. “The genesis of the decision to do The Lorax as the follow-up to Dr. Seuss’ Horton Hears a Who! actually came from [Seuss’ widow] Audrey Geisel,” he recalls of the conversation. “We had talked about wanting to do another [...]...

There are no rhymes in the video below, so don’t get excited. But the local NBC affiliate in San Diego did at least use one Grinch reference when reporting on the Lorax statue that was stolen from the La Jolla, Calif., garden of Audrey Geisel, the 90-year-old widow of Dr. Seuss (real name, Theodor Geisel), over the weekend. Property manager Carl Romero told NBC San Diego that the thieves dragged the 300-pound bronze statue down a hill, over a fence, and probably into a car. (Is it wrong that we’d like to see video of that?) Police are investigating,...

Property manager Carl Romero told U-t San Diego ( ) on Tuesday that he found footprints indicating the thieves had dragged the 300-pound statue to an access road and lifted it over a fence. http://bit.ly/H9hxPz
He had seen the statue Saturday afternoon, and Geisel noticed it was missing Monday morning.
Audrey Geisel's daughter Lark Grey Dimond-Cate cast two of the sculptures. One was the lone Seuss character to reside on the family's property overlooking the Pacific Ocean in La Jolla.

What happens when "The Lorax" scores the biggest opening of 2012 to date (and took the #1 box office spot in its second week as well)? You start planning for more Dr. Seuss movies, that's what!
However, Universal and Illumination Entertainment aren't turning to "One Fish Two Fish Red Fish Blue Fish," "Green Eggs and Ham" or even "Oh, The Places You'll Go!" for their next animated Seussian adaptation. They've got their eye on what might be the most popular Seuss story of all time (next to "How The Grinch Stole Christmas"), "The Cat in the Hat," according to Deadline.
What makes this rather surprising news is that Universal already brought the "Cat" to the big screen in the form of the 2003 live action film starring Mike Myers (under a ton of makeup) in the title role. "The Cat in the Hat" grossed $101 million domestic and another $133 million worldwide - but at a budget of $109 million,...

EW has confirmed that Universal Pictures and Illumination Entertainment are working on a 3-D animated production of Dr. Seuss’s The Cat in the Hat. Spurred by the recent box-office domination of The Lorax, the reboot will hope to succeed where Mike Myers’ 2003 live-action iteration of the 1957 classic failed. As initially reported by Deadline, Rob Lieber (who’s adapted Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day for Fox) has signed on the write the script, and Audrey Geisel, the widow of Dr. Seuss (né Theodore Geisel), will serve as executive producer. No release date is projected at this point.

As you may have heard Dr. Seuss' The Lorax is doing extremely well at the box office, pulling in $134 million so far. So of course Universal Pictures and Illumination Entertainment are excited to dive into Suess' library of books and make another one. The next film on their list is the original classic that we all know and love... The Cat in the Hat.
Like The Lorax, it will be a 3D CG animated film, and Rob Lieber has been hired to write the script. It will be produced by Chris Meledandri and Audrey Geisel. This will be the second time that The Cat in the Hat got the big screen treatment. Back in 2003 Universal developed the absolutely terrible live-action version that starred Mike Meyers. I think they actually might get it right the second time around.

"The Lorax": $132m domestic gross (to date). "Horton Hears a Who!": $297m worldwide gross. "How the Grinch Stole Christmas": $345m worldwide gross. Dr Seuss adaptations are a cinematic brand that audiences respond to. Or to put it another way: When Hollywood studios adapt Dr. Seuss books, it's pretty much certain they'll make them big bucks. Even the dreadful live-action "The Cat in the Hat" starring Mike Myers earned more than $100m domestic, so don't be surprised to hear about a "Green Eggs and Ham" movie in the works, sooner rather than later.
The next Dr. Seuss story to make its way to thatres, however, will be one we've already seen. Illumination Entertainment ("The Lorax," "Hop," "Despicable Me") will be trying their luck with "The Cat in the Hat" again, but this time they'll be turning it into a 3D CG-animated feature, rather than a Mike Myers clusterfuck.

Universal Pictures and Illumination Entertainment are developing Dr. Seuss' 1957 book The Cat in the Hat for the screen, Deadline reports.
The studios are hoping that the recent box office smash hit "The Lorax" is indicative of an audience hungry for animated adaptations of Seuss' riddle-happy books. "Lorax" brought in a strong $122 million over its first 10 days and won the weekend box office two weeks in a row as families flocked to the theaters to see the movie.
Deadline notes that The Cat in the Hat is probably Seuss' third-most iconic book, after Green Eggs and Ham and How The Grinch Stole Christmas. But while the live action film "The Grinch" was a box office winner, a previous attempt at bringing The Cat to the big screen was widely panned.
The 2003 live action adaptation starred Mike Myers and earned an abysmal 11 percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Deadline reports that it...

In less than two weeks, The Lorax has already become this year's highest-grossing movie, so it's no surprise that Universal wants to return to the world of Dr. Seuss. This time, though, they'll be animating one of the Seuss tales they couldn't get right in live action: The Cat in the Hat. Deadline reports that Uni, Seuss widow Audrey Geisel, and Illumination Pictures will reteam for a 3-D, CG-animated take on the classic tale that will hopefully wipe the slate clean after the 2003 version of Cat in the Hat, which put Mike Myers into a very unnerving feline costume. If that pays off, will they dare to attempt a new animated version of How the Grinch Stole Christmas, even though the 1966 TV special is a holiday perennial?...

With "The Lorax" outperforming expectations at the box office (even, in its second weekend, beating "John Carter"), Dr. Seuss has once again become a hot property for Hollywood, and one of his most famous creations is heading for the big screen again. Rob Lieber will write the script, with Illumination's Chris Meledandri and Geisel producing. The book was the basis for the dismal 2003 box office disappointment starring Mike Myers as a heavily...

Exclusive: After topping the box office the past two weeks with Dr. Seuss’ The Lorax, Universal Pictures, Illumination Entertainment’s Chris Meledandri, and Audrey Geisel will tap the Dr. Seuss library for another classic title, and this one is a surprise. They will begin developing a 3D CG-animated feature based on The Cat in the Hat. Rob Lieber has just been set to write the script. Meledandri will produce and Geisel will be executive producer. Aside from Green Eggs And Ham and How The Grinch Stole Christmas!, The Cat In the Hat is arguably the most famous story generated by Theodor Dr. Seuss Geisel. The surprise comes from the fact that Universal turned it into a live action film in 2003. That film grossed $101 million domestic and $133 million worldwide, it cost about $109 million to make and was considered a big disappointment. While a live action Grinch was a big hit for Universal,...

Universal Pictures A scene from “The Lorax”
In its first few attempts, Universal Pictures and Illumination Entertainment struggled to digitize the 41-year-old environmentally-conscious and very orange Lorax.
“There were times when it looked creepy or weird,” said Ken Daurio, one of the writers of the film. “Pictures don’t have to walk or have profiles, our Lorax did,” he added.
The animation modelers caught a break when Illumination Entertainment president Christopher Meledandri stumbled upon a bronze sculpture of the creature in Audrey Geisel’s garden.

Adapting a children's book, especially one as beloved (and brief) as Dr. Seuss' gentle eco-fable "The Lorax," is an unenviable task. There's a sliver of narrative that must be expanded, padded, and teased out, while an attempt must be made to maintain all of the things that people love about Dr. Seuss (nee Theodor Geisel) and his books – the sing-songy rhythm, the loop-de-loop design work, the easy surrealism. In short: it's kind of a bitch. Or a snitch. Or a sliver-de-glitch. But the good folks at Illumination Entertainment (who made a surprise hit out of the decidedly under-the-radar "Despicable Me") have done a respectable job bringing "The Lorax" to the screen. It's just a shame that the fidelity to the source material, on both narrative and design levels, seems to have taken the steam out of something that could have been truly special.

Actor Zac Efron jumped at the chance to star in the animated movie adaptation of Dr. Seuss' popular children's book The Lorax after receiving a personal note from the author's widow.
The former High School Musical star was tipped as the perfect actor to voice the lead character of Ted by Audrey Geisel herself and Efron admits it was more than enough to convince him to take the job.
He tells U.S. talk show host Ellen DeGeneres, "I got a letter from Audrey, Dr. Seuss' actual wife. She sent me a nice letter that said she thought I would be great for the part and instantly I said yes. I couldn't (say no), you don't."
Singer Taylor Swift and veteran actors Danny DeVito and Betty White also lend their vocals to the highly-anticipated film, which is due for release next month.
