David Hemingson’s The Holdovers at Focus Features won original screenplay and Cord Jefferson’s Oscar-winning American Fiction from Amazon MGM Studios took adapted honours at the strike-delayed Writers Guild Awards on Sunday.
This was a second major adapted screenplay award in relatively short order for Jefferson after last month’s Oscar win.
The Holdovers prevailed in an original screenplay category that included Barbie and May December, but not the Oscar winner Anatomy Of A Fall, rendered ineligible here because it was not produced under a Writers Guild of America (WGA) contract.
The best documentary screenplay award went to Errol Morris for The Pigeon Tunnel.

Exclusive: Sony Pictures Television has finalized a new licensing deal with Paramount Global for comedy series The King of Queens to continue to be available on Paramount linear cable networks. The new pact also includes for the first time streaming rights on Paramount+ for all nine seasons and on Pluto TV for some (currently Seasons 1-3).
Paramount Global would not specify which linear networks will be carrying The King Of Queens. The sitcom has been running on the company’s TV Land and CMT.
Sony TV took The King of Queens out a year ago, offering rights across all linear and digital platforms starting in April 2024. The new pact with Paramount Global kicked in at the start of the month, with the show already available on Paramount+ and Pluto TV.
The deal is not exclusive — The King of Queens continues to also be available on NBCU platforms, including Peacock, as well as in broadcast syndication.

Leverage: Redemption will be back for a third season on a new platform. Amazon MGM Studios has renewed the popular heist-drama series, whose first two seasons streamed on Freevee, and is moving to Prime Video for Season 3. The third season will premiere on Prime Video next year in the U.S., UK, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand.
Produced by Electric Entertainment, Leverage: Redemption follows a Robin Hood-esque team of criminals as they stage elaborate cons against corrupt and powerful individuals on behalf of clients who have been wronged. It stars Gina Bellman, Christian Kane, Beth Riesgraf, Aldis Hodge, Noah Wyle, and Aleyse Shannon.
“Fans have been devoted to Leverage: Redemption since the series premiered on Freevee,” says Lauren Anderson, head of AVOD; unscripted and targeted programming, Amazon MGM Studios. “Every season has showcased the fun dynamic between our cast combined with the triumphant, David vs. Goliath stories envisioned by our writers.

“Leverage: Redemption” has been renewed for Season 3, but will be changing platforms. The first two seasons aired on Amazon’s Freevee, but Season 3 will debut on sister streamer Prime Video in 2024 instead.
The move is significant, as “Leverage: Redemption,” a revival of the TNT series “Leverage,” was one of the major scripted titles available on Freevee. The show was ordered to series in 2020, when Freevee was still branded as IMDb TV. Freevee’s biggest scripted series at present is “Bosch: Legacy,” while a spinoff of that show was recently ordered at Prime Video as well.
The first two seasons of “Leverage: Redemption” are currently available to stream on Freevee, as is “Leverage” via Electric Entertainment’s Fast Channel and on-demand.

[This story contains spoilers from the sixth episode of Poker Face, “Exit Stage Death.”]
When looking ahead at what was to come on Poker Face, co-showrunners Nora and Lilla Zuckerman had said that an upcoming episode involving a fake play within an episode was their toughest stand-alone murder mystery story to crack.
That episode, titled “Exit Stage Death” and starring Ellen Barkin and Tim Meadows, released Thursday as the sixth installment in the Rian Johnson Peacock series starring Natasha Lyonne. And, as was teased by the Zuckermans, the murder of Jameela Jamil’s character, who plays the onscreen wife to Meadows, involved many moving parts.
The theatrical episode sees former sitcom icons Kathleen (Barkin) and Michael (Meadows) reuniting for a one-night-only stage event, and it involved the carefully plotted murder of Michael’s uber-rich wife Ava (Jamil), who fell to her death through a trap door intended to be Kathleen’s showstopping final act. The parody production, called The Ghosts of Pensacola,...

“Leverage: Redemption” has been renewed for Season 2 at IMDb TV.
“Bringing back these characters has been a dream come true, and working with such incredible people as the team at IMDb TV has been an absolute pleasure,” said Electric Entertainment’s Dean Devlin, co-showrunner and executive producer of the series. “So excited we get to do it all over again.”
In the followup to the original show, the rich and powerful take what they want, and the Leverage team has reunited to take them down. Sophie Devereaux (The Grifter), Parker (The Thief), Eliot Spencer (The Hitter), and Alec Hardison (The Hacker) watched the world change over the last eight years. It had become easier—and sometimes even legal—for the rich to become richer and the powerful to squash anyone who got in their way. Leverage may not look the same, but the team is most definitely back!
IMDb TV picked up a reboot of the show, and the first eight episodes premiere Friday, July 9th!
WIth some old faces returning, we have the scoop on everything you need to know before the premiere!
The returning team features most of the prominent gang but lacks their leader Nate (Timothy Hutton).
Luckily, Leverage: Redemption provides fans with why Nate doesn't join them quite early in the season.
Another slight change, while still appearing in the show, is the limited appearances of Aldis Hodge's Hardison.
Hardison will still be making appearances, but because Aldis Hodge's work schedule has been crazy lately, he will no be in every episode.
While we will miss seeing Hardison each airing, we are glad that he could be in the show at all.
Joining the team are two newcomers: Hardison's foster...

Independent production companies continue to lead the way back into production amid the coronavirus pandemic.
Leverage, a new incarnation of the 2008 crime drama for IMDb TV, is entering its second week of filming in New Orleans, Louisiana. The series is produced by Dean Devlin’s Electric Entertainment. It has joined fellow indie productions, Tyler Perry Studios’ Sistas and The Oval, which recently finished their shoots, and Tom Werner’s Werner Entertainment’s The Conners, which just started production.
As documented in detail on social media by Devlin and the Leverage cast, the series’ in-person table read was on Aug. 4, with actors sitting 6 feet apart and wearing face shields. Cameras started rolling on Aug. 10, and the first week of shooting went well, sources said.
Like with Perry’s casts, the Leverage actors flew in on a private jet a couple days before the table read for a round of testing.

USA Network has axed the Gina Torres-led drama “Pearson” after just one season.
The series was a spinoff of fellow USA series “Suits.” Torres reprised the role of disbarred powerhouse lawyer Jessica Pearson as she moves to Chicago and gets involved in the world of politics. Along with Torres, the series starred Morgan Spector, Bethany Joy Lenz, Simon Kassianides, Eli Goree, Isabel Arraiza, and Chantel Riley. Daniel Arkin served as executive producer and showrunner, with “Suits” creator Aaron Korsh also executive producing with David Bartis, Gene Klein, Doug Liman, Kevin Bray, and Chris Downey. Universal Content Productions produced the series.
The series began as a backdoor pilot during Season 7 of “Suits,” which saw Pearson travel back home to Chicago and accept a job working for a possibly corrupt mayor while also trying to reconnect with her family.

The remarkable thing about the renaissance happening on Comedy Central — a channel on as hot a creative streak as anyone in the business at the moment — is that none of the shows that have been part of it have been all that revolutionary in form. You have a handful of sketch comedy shows ("Key & Peele," "Inside Amy Schumer," "Kroll Show"), a couple of reality show parodies ("Nathan For You," "Review"), and a single-camera sitcom in "Broad City," which returns for a second season tonight at 10:30. What distinguishes all of them, then, is in the sharply-defined voice and perspective of each show, and in the execution of it. Key and Peele have a clear and distinct perspective on race, but they're also pop culture omnivores whose show is as much of a chameleon as they are. Amy Schumer has a take on male-female (and female-female) relationships that I haven't seen on TV before,...

Just in time for Halloween, Daniel Radcliffe gets some special powers and couple of appendages growing from his temples in Radius’ Horns, which will be this week’s biggest rollout among specialty newcomers. The title received a warm welcome at a Cinema Society event attended by its stars this week in New York. This week’s newbies are dominated by nonfiction fare, though with some exceptions. Kino Lorber is opening French/Swiss maestro Jean-Luc Godard’s Goodbye To Language following a successful festival run. It has been critically acclaimed, and the company is expecting it to be a box office winner too. The 2014 Best Documentary winners from South by Southwest and Tribeca are going head-to-head in their theatrical debuts. Radius’ The Great Invisible (SXSW) opened in limited release Wednesday in an exclusively theatrical rollout, and The Orchard is bowing Point And Shoot (Tribeca) in a single NYC run. When a show reaches its final season there is an inevitability that things could end badly, though if you really like the characters you hope now. With Leverage: Complete Season 5 you would hope that the shows light-hearted sense of humour would mean that everybody ends up safe, but when you get to the final episode this becomes very questionable, though I’m not going to spoil it in a review where I try to say why I liked it.
If you’ve watched any of the prior seasons you already know how Leverage works, but just as before the idea is that a group of criminals have been brought together to help the innocent fight against big companies who use unscrupulous means to get what they want. The Leverage team are there...

In the United Kingdom we had a show called Hustle. The basic concept was to take a group of grifters and each episode they would take part in some type of heist, when watching Leverage: Complete Season 4 which has just been released on DVD in the UK I can’t help but feel that it’s like Hustle meets the A-Team. Where Hustle focused more on the heist and making money, Leverage though looks to add a moral side to art of grifting giving the victims the “Leverage” to get revenge on the people who have wronged them.
Leverage works on a basic concept of setting up a bad guy, in this case they must always be rich and will have gained these riches in an unmoral way. Like in the A-Team...

This is the first of a daily report on the various international sales agents who will converge at the Loews Hotel in Santa Monica for 10 days beginning November 4 at the American Film Market.
The film and television production company Electric Entertainment, owned by producer/ writer and previously an actor, Dean Devlin, has recently launched an international theatrical film and television sales and acquisitions division. Devlin has appointed industry veteran Sonia Mehandjiyska to run the new division, which will represent Electric’s original productions as well as third-party product from A-list filmmakers and seasoned television producers from around the globe.
Dean Devlin's Electric Entertainment has recently acquired two new projects, Critical Hour and No Good Deed as director vehicles for Devlin and Electric's Marc Roskin respectively. Eric Tipton wrote Critical Hour, and Brandon Boyce ( Apt Pupil, Wicker Park) penned No Good Deed. Devlin, Roskin and Electric’s Rachel Olschan are producing both projects.
Dean and I spoke together about his plans and his incredible trailblazing in the international film business.
How was Toronto?
Toronto was interesting as the place to begin international sales again. It's been a while since I started Voltage with Nicholas Chartier.
What decided you to return to international sales?
Since 2004, we have been independent and we have about 100 hours of entertainment. We have studios in Portland, a state-of-the-art post-production facility here in L.A. We think we can leverage all these assets to bring down costs, not only for ourselves but for others. We want to capitalize on what such a workflow can bring to the marketplace.
What size films are you looking to make and represent internationally?
$25 million and under to start. We want to build on our brand identity. We want to continue with the genres we have been doing.
I notice that you began as an actor in 1980 as the boy in The Bodyguard, and then you wrote 1992 you wrote Universal Soldier. Then you wrote and produced Stargate and Independence Day. Are you still writing?
Yes, in fact I wrote and am now producing Geostorm with Skydance Pictures' David Ellison and Dana Goldberg and Paramount.
(Author’s note: I just realized, as I write this, that Geostorm will actually be Dean’s directorial debut!)
Will Paramount release U.S. And Electric Entertainment take foreign?
No, actually Paramount will take worldwide rights to this film as it is larger than those we will take on initially.
I notice you also are working in television. Which do you prefer, TV or theatrical?
When I started, TV was very formulaic. Now movies are more expensive and predictable and TV has exploded. With all the channels, it has become more creative. I love TV as much as I love film.
You have also produced documentaries – well you exec produced Who Killed the Electric Car? and other docs (Spine Tingler! The William Castle Story and Bellflower , Becoming Santa and Go Far: The Christopher Rush Story) give you thanks. Will you continue with docs?
We all know about passion projects. I don't have plans for docs, but there are some which I feel passionate about and so I get involved with them.
Any plans for U.S. Distribution?
No plan yet. But it's interesting to see all the forms of releasing, like iTunes releasing before theatrical on certain types of films. Perhaps in the distant future we will get into U.S. Distribution, but not yet.
You showing such intelligence in your planning and executing. It's a pleasure to see you at work.
Thank you. I think that to have any creative freedom requires risk taking. People are quick to criticize the studio system but we know they are taking risks every day and I think we need to share the risk which is what I am doing.
Well you are really keeping up with the times and the changes and I wish you great success. And thank you for taking the time to talk with me about Electric.
Industry vet Sonia Mehandjiyska serves as Head of International Distribution
Mehandjiyska introduced Electric’s slate to buyers at the Toronto International Film Festival and is proceeding on sales at the American Film Market. She was previously Head of Sales at Global Screen, a Bavaria-Telepool joint venture in Munich, Germany, where she negotiated license agreements on theatrical films, TV Series and M.O.W.’s for one of Europe’s biggest libraries.
Since 2003, Mehandjiyska has served in a variety of international distribution positions with Gibraltar Entertainment, Lightning Entertainment and Echo Bridge, where she served as Vice President of International Sales in their London office.
Devlin commented, “Sonia’s business acumen, professionalism, and taste for material represents exactly what I am looking for in the person we want to head our new division. We welcome her to the Electric family, and look forward to working with her as we present our product to the global marketplace.”
“I am thrilled to be working with Dean as he builds Electric into a full-service independent production and distribution company. His reputation and astonishing body of work is indisputable, and an inspiration as I move half-way across the globe to join the company,” said Mehandjiyska.
The first project for the new division is The Wannabe, a film written and to be directed by Nick Sandow, starring Patricia Arquette ( Stigmata, True Romance, “Boardwalk Empire”), Vincent Piazza ( Jersey Boys, “Boardwalk Empire”), and Michael Imperioli (“Oldboy,” “The Sopranos”). Martin Scorsese will Executive Produce the project. Electric Entertainment is fully financing the film and Executive Producing along with Traction Media (Short Term 12). Lizzie Nastro (Bluebird) and Michael Gasparro are producing. Set in New York City during the early 1990s, the film centers on Thomas (Piazza), a man obsessed with mob culture who attempts to fix the jury in the trial of John Gotti. But as the plot is foiled and he’s rejected by the ones he idolizes most, he sets off with Rose (Arquette), a neighborhood fixture, on a ride worthy of mob lore.
Electric recently wrapped its fifth and final season of TNT’s action-packed drama “Leverage,” which starred Academy Award® Winner Timothy Hutton and was Executive Produced by Dean Devlin, John Rogers, Chris Downey and Marc Roskin. “Leverage” won the 2013 People’s Choice Award for Favorite Cable TV Drama.
Electric’s other television credits include TNT’s "The Librarian" starring Noah Wyle, which was the highest rated movie on cable that year (2004), its sequel, “The Librarian: Return to King Solomon’s Mines” and the third installment of the franchise, “The Librarian: Curse of the Judas Chalice.” Along with Bryan Singer’s Bad Hat Harry production company, Electric produced SyFy Channel’s “The Triangle,” which won an Emmy for its Visual Effects, and was the highest-rated miniseries on the cable channel since “Steven Spielberg Presents Taken” (2002).
Devlin is currently in pre-production on his feature directorial debut, Geostorm, which he is producing with Skydance Pictures’ David Ellison and Dana Goldberg and his Electric Entertainment team of Marc Roskin and Rachel Olschan. Paramount retains worldwide rights to the film.

After dragging its decision for months, TNT has pulled the plug of drama Leverage four days before the series’ fifth season finale. The news comes two weeks after the series’ executive producer Dean Devlin announced in an open letter to fans that he and co-creator John Rogers decided to end the current Season 5 finale they way they envisioned the series would end — in case there was no Season 6. Leverage, which is independently produced by Devlin’s Electric Entertainment, has been on the bubble the past couple of years but has managed to secure last-minute renewals. The Season 5 finale is set for Christmas, December 25. Here are TNT’s statement and Devlin’s letter on Leverage‘s cancellation: TNT’s Leverage has thrilled audiences with its delightfully intricate plots, its “stand up for the little guy” attitude and its terrific performances from stars Timothy Hutton, Gina Bellman, Christian Kane, Beth Riesgraf and Aldis Hodge.

TNT’s Leverage swings back into action tonight at 8/7c, in a new (yet not new) locale. Coming off the events of Season 4′s finale, Nate’s team bid Beantown adieu and set up shop in Portland – aka the city where the caper drama has filmed all these years. Also new: Hardison and Parker are “out” with their romance, so we thought it a good time to chat up Aldis Hodge about that fun dynamic. Plus: Why Leverage‘s master hacker wants to suit up as a certain Marvel hero.

TNT has renewed its light caper drama Leverage for a fifth season with a 15-episode order. Season 5 will launch next summer. The series, starring Timothy Hutton as the leader of a gang of grifters, hackers and thieves out to settle scores against the rich and powerful, will wrap its summer run Aug. 28 and return with the conclusion of its fourth season in November. Men of a Certain Age has been canclled and there is still no word on Hawthorne and Memphis Beat. Leverage premiered in 2008 and has grown its audience each of its four seasons. This summer, it has averaged 4.8 million viewers, up 10% over Season 3, with 1.9 million adults 18-49 (+6%). TNT’s Leverage is a phenomenon. I can say that because the show was announced as appearing at Comic-Con only five days before the convention and the cast still appeared to a huge crowd. After the fact, series co-creator Chris Downey, along with cast members Timothy Hutton (Nate), Beth Riesgraf (Parker), Christian Kane (Eliot) and Aldis Hodge (Hardison), as well as guest star Wil Wheaton (Chaos), dropped in to discuss…well, just about everything!

Leverage co-creator Chris Downey has admitted that it is challenging constantly inventing new tricks and cons for the show. The producer told iFMagazine that it is difficult to avoid repetition in a long-running series. "There aren’t a lot of heist and con shows that have lasted as long as we have," he explained. "By the end of this season, we’ll have done 44 episodes. The challenge is always trying to find relatable situations that we can turn into heist and cons. "We’re also finding new ways of shooting Portland that we haven’t seen before and also (more)...
