By now we all know that nothing can stop a zombie apocalypse, not even the series finale of "The Walking Dead." The main show may be over after a whopping 11-season run, but the spin-offs are flying fast and furious and the next one up just got a brand new, full-length trailer.
I myself fell off of "The Walking Dead" wagon shortly after Negan was introduced and haven't kept up with it since somewhere around the middle of season 7, but it's unquestionable that "The Walking Dead" is a franchise that fosters a huge fandom. The cast and crew still pack huge halls at conventions and the memes just won't stop making their way onto my For You pages.

When you were a kid, perhaps your parents hid their stash of grass while you secretly smoked your own weed. Fast forward to present day: your dispensary carries cannabis and your kid's favorite number is sure to be 420.
In this era of legalization, marijuana law isn't the only thing changing. The way we think and talk about about weed has changed. As we've grown up, so has broadcast television -- with TV stoners evolving from blurry-eyed, cartoon losers into high functioning adults with jobs.

(The funny part.) Consider this list of dope shows your gateway drug to high quality, small screen entertainment.

We're now into the third run of the Liev Schreiber-fronted drama, and the season hasn't dipped one iota since the shocking, deadly twists of its predecessors.

After four seasons and nearly 50 episodes, Wilfred called it a dog’s life last night in quintessentially existential fashion. [Warning: Wilfred spoilers from here on out.] Viewers were left to ponder the fate of depressive protagonist Ryan Newman (Elijah Wood) and his canine best friend turned coping mechanism, Wilfred (Jason Gann). But the dark-as-night comedy’s closing chapter also offered some of its hardest-earned pathos and, depending on your interpretation, either a deeply satisfying meditation on moving forward or a bleak affirmation of ill fate. Hours ahead of the finale’s broadcast, having not yet seen the fully produced episode himself, Wood spoke with Vulture via cell phone about the show’s multidimensional journey, whether it will ever eclipse his association with The Lord of the Rings movies, and his feelings about the word selfies.Do you think Ryan’s dead? When I read the script, that was my feeling. At the very beginning of the episode,...

Nerdly had a moment to correspond with David Zuckerman, the mastermind behind the U.S adaptation of FX’s surprisingly sweet and often endearingly crass Wilfred. It ended it’s four season, forty-nine episode run on Wednesday with a touching, poignant tear-inducing hourlong episode. I watched it and felt immediately comfortable and happy with the ending. I was happy that the series ended precisely correct for what the writers had envisioned for the entirety of the run. There were moments that fulfilled everything that the show promised and left no strings lingering.
It ultimately ended as a sobering account of someone’s mental illness. There wasn’t some grand mytholgical ending where Wilfred was a mischevious god named Krungel or Matdamon. Nope. But it didn’t need that. It offered rational answers for everything and even gave us answers to why Wilfred looks the way he does, or who Bruce is.

A few thoughts on the series finale of "Wilfred" coming up just as soon as I pull a dove from behind your ear... I have to admit to losing touch with "Wilfred" for much of this final season, between the move to Fxx and a feeling that the show had largely outlived its usefulness. David Zuckerman has talked in the past about not wanting to let the show get swallowed up by the mystery of who or what Wilfred is, but most of what I saw of the last two seasons suggested that the show ultimately couldn't avoid that trap. And, as a result, it went from a darkly funny comedy with a minor mystery element to a very dark psychological drama that would occasionally pause for a joke about Wilfred's sex life or eating habits. Some isolated parts of this worked — the episode a few weeks back where...

A good television show is, in many ways, like a real dog. Both require a lot of attention and love, and occasionally, despite their best intentions, they drop a deuce in your living room. When I first laid eyes on the original Australian series Wilfred, I loved co-creator Jason Gann's indelible performance as the title character, a man trapped in a dog's body. But as funny and weird as the show was, it didn't grab me on an emotional level. It wasn't about anything, and at that point in my career I was looking to do something with more

ABC has made another early comedy pickup, greenlighting An American Education, a single-camera project based on the BBC Three series Bad Education. Film and TV writers Peter Huyck and Alex Gregory wrote the script from a story they co-wrote with the original series’ creator/star Jack Whitehall and executive producer Ben Cavey through Tiger Aspect, which produces the British show. All four executives produce. 25-year-old British actor/comedian Whitehall is set to reprise his role as Alfie Wickers in the U.S. version where Wickers, a British transplant, is an unorthodox young teacher in the San Diego public school system. Alfie loves his students but his youthful, often naive enthusiasm and unconventional methods put him at odds with the test-obsessed administrators. He juggles his time between mentoring his students, bucking the system and pursuing the attractive new chemistry teacher. ABC Studios is producing, with filming slated for January in Los Angeles.

I am both gladdened and saddened by FX’s decision to renew Wilfred for a fourth and final season. I’ve been reviewing the dark comedy since its pilot episode first aired in 2011 and have found oodles of enjoyment from its twisted storytelling, which focuses on Ryan (Elijah Wood) and the bizarre life lessons he learns from a dog who looks like an Australian man in a dog costume: the titular Wilfred (Jason Gann). The series has never been a heavy hitter in the ratings, but it’s one of the more well written – and often beautifully shot – sitcoms. It is for that reason that Wilfred deserves one more season.
Nothing is more disheartening than a series that isn’t allowed to reach its conclusion. When Wilfred’s third season began spiralling downwards in the ratings – the season averaged only 580,000 total viewers – I became concerned FX would cancel the series...

Broadchurch has gone down a storm over in the Us, where it aired on BBC America, so when news broke that Fox was developing its own version of the hit ITV crime drama, it didn't come as that much of a surprise.
What did come as a surprise was the remake's first confirmed piece of casting - David Tennant is to reprise his role as lead male detective, though this time with a Yank twang. Let's just hope his 'Generican' accent has improved since the Rex Is Not Your Lawyer days...

"Wilfred," FX's dark comedy starring Elijah Wood as a depressed man who starts seeing his neighbor's dog Wilfred (Jason Gann) as a pot-smoking man in a dog suit, will be getting a fourth season from the cable network, Variety reports. Its fourth season, which will have 10 episodes, will also be its last. The quirky show will move over to Fxx, FX's spinoff network targeting younger demos. The series, which is produced by FX Prods., is based on an Australian show of the same name. When it launched in June 2011, it broke the cable networks' ratings records for most watched comedy premiere (2.6 million viewers). When the third season kicked off, our TV editor Alison Willmore wrote "Wilfred" isn't the strongest of FX's comedies, despite a particularly noteworthy lineup of guest stars that's included Nestor Carbonell, Rashida Jones, Jane Kaczmarek and Robin Williams." "Wilfred" recently wrapped up its third season with a death and a cliffhanger.

"Wilfred"'s fourth season will be its last. The Elijah Wood and Jason Gann-starring comedy will get one more season, and is being moved from FX to the network's new spinoff channel, Fxx.
Season 4 will see original showrunner David Zuckerman return to co-showrun the series with Season 3's heads, Redd Agnew and Eli Jorne. "Wilfred's" fourth season will be slightly reduced, as it's getting 10 episodes instead of its usual 13.
"Wilfred's" ratings had dropped considerably from Season 2 to Season 3, and there was some concern that the series wouldn't be renewed. Fortunately for fans of the dark comedy, "Wilfred" will be able to have its swan song and tie up all remaining loose ends following the Season 3 cliffhanger ending.
Also having made the move to Fxx are "It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia," "The League," "Legit" and "Totally Biased With W. Kamau Bell." Are you glad "Wilfred" will get one final season?...

Wilfred took a week off from evoking questions from the audience, and instead just let the viewers take in a fun half hour of laughs in "Stagnation."
Any time you let Jason Gann sing it's going to be funny, but Wilfy's love song for Phyllis, and subsequent hate song towards Ryan - "love is a wrecking ball" - was above and beyond normal hilarity.
It took until the second act for Wilfy to slide into his character for the week, but once he got there, the head over heels in love version might have been one of my favorites yet.

Gann and his wife Alejandra Valera welcomed their first child, son Xano William Varela Gann, on Tuesday (Aug. 13), People reports. Xano weighed in at 7 lbs., 2 oz. and measured 20.4 inches long when he arrived in the Los Angeles hospital, Gann's rep tells the magazine.
"Alejandra and I are so in love with our little man," Gann says in a statement. He and Varela are heading straight into parenthood from the honeymoon phase. The two were married on Feb. 4 in Las Vegas.
Congratulations to the proud parents.

If "Intuition" was the turning point of Wilfred Season 3, "Perspective" accelerated things in a hurry after taking that turn.
Following his tantrum at the end of last week's episode, Ryan was finally forced into talking to a psychiatrist. This head-shrinker, mind you, was cast perfectly, and then executed elegantly - and a few times hilariously - by Lance Reddick.
With much of the half hour spent inside Ryan's mind, this episode continued everything down that path that gives the viewers so many questions that we get whiplash.
Will we figure out more about Wilfy? Who is this spotted dog? Is Wilfy an alien? Why is Ryan creating another man-dog who wants Ryan to think Wilfy is an alien? Why does he love Reebok Pumps so much?
There were a million things to think about as Ryan explored the inner workings of the thoughts and feelings of his past, but at...

Zap2It had the chance to chat with the cast and producers of "Wilfred" at San Diego Comic-Con on Thursday, and they promised that some big revelations are yet to come in the ongoing Season 3.
"There's some really crazy stuff that happens this season," says Fiona Gubelmann, who portrays Ryan's (Elijah Wood) neighbor and Wilfred's (Jason Gann) owner, Jenna. "I didn't see any of it coming, and I think that our fans are going to be really excited, but also really shocked. And the stuff that they're setting up this season I think is going to set stuff up for a couple more seasons. I'm really excited to see how people respond."

The cast of "Wilfred" attended San Diego Comic-Con in full force Thursday (July 18), with stars Jason Gann, Fiona Gubelmann and Dorian Brown as well as executive producers David Zuckerman, Reed Agnew and Eli Jorné participlating in Thursday's "Wilfred" panel. Elijah Wood even checked in via satellite, his face hanging large above the audience.
The panel began with a full new episode from Season 3, titled "Stagnation." In the episode Ryan (Wood) discovers his roommate Anne (Kristen Schaal) wants to move out. Loathe to actually get a job, he agrees that Anne's bulldog can move in, upsetting his anthropomorphic dog Wilfred (Gann).
"You're stuck in a rut," Wilfred tells him. Keep in mind the "dog" had just been intimate with a hole in a fence, and in a later scene he urinates in the house in protest. But the bulldog is in heat, driving Wilfred wild with what he perceives as love,...

Elijah Wood may have been physically absent from Comic-Con, but he made an appearance nonetheless via satellite from La to front a lively Wilfred panel presentation moderated by Deadline’s own Dominic Patten. Wood, who’s currently filming the rabid kids horror comedy Cooties, joined a Wilfred crew including creator/star Jason Gann, exec producer David Zuckerman, writer Eli Jorne, and co-stars Fiona Gubelmann and Dorian Brown. Gann co-created the Australian original of the same name which ran for two seasons. The Us version debuted in 2011 on FX and is currently in its third season with Wood starring as Ryan, a young man who attempts suicide before tending to his neighbor’s dog (Gann, who plays the eponymous Wilfred in a dog suit). Gann said he only now feels like they’ve finally broken through in Wilfred’s development. “The character now it feels like we found him and it...

Wilfred is FX’s only comedy offering this summer, (With Louis C.K.’s Louie on hiatus after his HBO concert) and the meta-bending man-and-dog show has put the weight on its shoulder and is just as good as ever, with changes to each character and the mystery of Wilfred (Jason Gann) and Ryan’s (Eiljah Wood) relationship and how far it goes back comes into question. Then there’s Kristen (Dorian Brown) accepting being a single parent and needing to rely on Ryan and Jenna (Fiona Gubelmann) warming up to marriage. We spoke with creator, producer, and star Jason Gann and briefly with his co-star, Elijah Wood about where season three is going and what’s still in store.
Not to weigh the potential progress of his session(s) with Dr. Blum (Lance Reddick) too much, but it seems like we’re gradually getting to understanding what Wilfred represents to Ryan.

Wilfred is a great comedy about a man and his (neighbor's) dog — but is it a great mystery? Not so much.
The series started with Ryan's (Elijah Wood) attempted suicide and has since followed his struggle to redefine his identity and determine what kind of man he's going to be. Wilfred (Jason Gann) serves an important role in this journey, but Ryan can't be...

Comic-Con regulars know Thursday is usually the calm before the epic storm of Friday and Saturday. And without "Twilight" on the agenda, this year's first full day of the Con looks even less packed than usual.
Except, of course, for the 20th Anniversary of "The X-Files" which should fill Ballroom 20 past its breaking point and likely have hardcore fans lining up early just to guarantee a seat.
On the movie side, panels for "Divergent" and "Ender's Game" will try to lure the "Twilight" crowd (and hopefully appeal to some non-"Twilight" loving sci-fi fans as well). While anticipated TV panels also include fan favorites "Psych," "Dexter," "Teen Wolf," "Wilfred" and "Beauty and the Beast" and newcomers "Hannibal," "The Blacklist," "Star-Crossed" and "Intelligence" (with "Lost" star Josh Holloway).
Plus, the first ever Con panel for the BBC's awesome "Sherlock" (which airs stateside on PBS). Sadly, without stars Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman...

On Thursday's episode of “Wilfred,” Ryan (Elijah Wood) decided to take Wilfred to obedience school in order to get the owner Kim’s (Jenny Mollen) attention. Wilfred (Jason Gann) was excited about going back to school at first, but he quickly realized that obedience school just isn’t what it used to be.
“Hey, is that an open seat over there? Ah, it’s taken? ... Hey! That wasn’t very nice! I was going to eat that! ... I’m not a loser! Stop chanting it in unison!” Wilfred said.
Wilfred was even cyber-bullied by his classmates, who called him a “major dingus” on Facebook.

Elijah Wood has returned with season three of FX’s Wilfred, and things are as wild as ever. In last week's season premiere, ex-lawyer Ryan (Wood) questioned whether mental illness may be at the root of why he sees Wilfred (Jason Gann). The ever-obstructive Wilfred offers an alternate theory, claiming to be an immortal spirit. The pair tracked down Wilfred’s old home in Sacramento, with Ryan determined to find a baby picture of the dog. If such a picture existed, Ryan claimed it would lend credence to his theory. In classic Wilfred fashion, there was no definitive answer. But

As "Wilfred" heads into its third season, there are several recurring questions that remain to be answered. Will the reason behind Ryan's ability to see Wilfred as a person be revealed? Does "Wilfred" have a set end date? And, perhaps most importantly, will Ryan ever don Wilfred's dog suit?
These are questions that the cast and crew of "Wilfred" has pondered, and leading man Elijah Wood addressed them head on during a conference call with reporters following Season 3's premiere "Comfort." Though that episode did somewhat address whether Ryan's visions of Wilfred stem from mental illness, Wood says that's not going to be a recurring subject this season.
"I think we don't really address head on any further in the season so much the idea of mental illness," he says. "It's always been there, even if we haven't talked about it. It was interesting to see that in the first episode,...

‘Comfort’ is a largely standalone episode compared to the premiere’s heavy mythology. They don’t pick up on any of the threads leftover from the previous episode, like the drawing or Ryan seeing Stinky as a lookalike Wilfred (albeit one with a different personality). Instead, they offer up a layered episode that has a lot going on but seem to feel overstuffed. They throw in new people, religion and death into an ever spinning cocktail.
They start changing a little bit of things here and there. For instance, they open up Ryan’s world a little bit in this episode by giving him a friend in Mailman Bob. It’s a good device because all we usually see of Ryan’s world is Jenna and his family, they hadn’t really given Ryan a friend since the show began,...

The mythology base of “Wilfred” is something that set it apart from any other comedy on FX, or on television for the most part. It’s a deep mythology that slowly started to crop up as the first season started to end and rolled straight into the second season. It’s a smart move that they’ve not given too much of the game away but give the viewer just enough morsels to keep you invested, and giving even more pathos and emotion to a show that could’ve stay within the realm of lazy scatological humor and pot jokes. Not that it doesn’t regardless, but where the juvenile humor is only a cursory element in an overall strong comedy. It’s a show you can mostly jump into but may leave new viewers scratching their heads,...

It's been exactly nine months since the last time I was able to write about how great of a television show Wilfred is.
In my review of the Wilfred Season 2 finale, I called the show hilarious, heart-warming, depressing, and thought-provoking. Last summer the show took a leap in quality, elevating it to not only one of the best comedies on TV, but one of the best series period.
After watching two episodes of Wilfred Season 3, that fact has not changed.
The hour of "Uncertainty" and "Comfort" worked as a tremendous reminder of why Wilfred is like nothing else on television. It has the look and feel of a major motion picture, it racks the viewer's brain week after week with questions of what it's all about akin to Lost or Fringe, and it cracks you up throughout like some of the best comedies of all time.

Wilfred, which returns this evening, is not only one of those television series that asks you to take a leap of the imagination, but to uniquely embrace the oddities of both human and canine nature.
Thanks to the vision of Jason Gann, who plays Wilfred and co-created the series with Adam Zwar (the duo also created the original Aussie series of the same name), the FX show has found an audience.
I talked to Gann last week to get the scoop on the Wilfred Season 3, as well as ask about the mystery the show confronts in the new episodes – how long has Wilfred been a part of depressed Ryan’s (Elijah Wood) life?
TV Fanatic: Because this is such a not-so-traditional sitcom, how do you think of a new season? Do you think of story arcs? Or what you want to do that just makes you laugh?
