Heavy metal and horror movies go together like chocolate and peanut butter, not least because of their shared fascination with Satan. The relationship between the trio goes back to the days when Ozzy Osbourne and his bandmates decided to name Black Sabbath after the Mario Bava movie playing across the street from their rehearsal space, and Australian filmmaker Sean Byrne (The Loved Ones) revisits it once more for his sophomore horror feature, The Devil’s Candy. This time around, though, Byrne adds a twist by appealing to a growing and under-represented segment of the extreme art forms’ shared fan base: parents.

Goth America has a taste for cultural collapse and rebirth. Whether in the religious right's mythos of the Rapture or in the left's fascination with nuclear extermination or the cataclysmic results of the effects of global warming as in say, Cormack McCarthy's The Road. This is the mulch that Goth grows best in. American Gothic, the subculture of the doomed.
At the beginning of the '70s Heavy Metal emerged as a genre separate from Hard Rock. The record Black Sabbath by Black Sabbath released in 1970 contains all of the essential elements of the genre. Loud, often slow, riffy, hard, blues influenced rock. Satanic lyrics, long hair and beards, simple silver jewellry and a gloomy melodramatic mein. The band came from Birmingham and reflected the bleakness of an industrial city in decline. Instead of militating against the situation of the four day working week, strikes and unemployment that its young men faced,...

On Monday, July 26, famed rock producer, manager, and lyricist Sandy Pearlman died at the age of 72. His Wikipedia page says he "was the recipient of 17 gold and platinum records." He managed that despite not actually producing many bands, or even albums -- but he left a big imprint on every one he worked on.
Born in Rockaway (Queens), NY in 1943, he got a college degree at the State University of New York at Stony Brook on Long Island in 1966.
A year later, still in the Stony Brook area, he recruited a band so he could have a series of science-fiction poems he'd written (the Imaginos saga, about a group secretly controlling world history) set to music and performed. He named the band Soft White Underbelly after Winston Churchill's epithet for Italy, but changed its name to Oaxaca after Soft White Underbelly got a negative review at a big concert.

Press Release: One Way Static Records is excited to bring you their latest release: Rick Wakeman’S iconic motion picture soundtrack for the 1981 slasher-classic The Burning. Available on both vinyl & cassette.
The Burning is loosely based on the NY urban legend of Cropsey, a tale that became popular at summer camps in the 1960s and '70s. In the film, a summer camp caretaker who was horribly disfigured from a prank gone wrong is released from the hospital with severe deformities and seeks revenge on those he holds responsible, starting with the kids at a nearby summer camp.

Juan Navarro is an artist and co-founder of the small press indie comic book company Creature Entertainment located in Miami, Florida. He writes the supernatural crime drama Rez and draws the psychological horror story Tommy. He also runs his own website Fwacata and has his own webcomic The Zombie Years about a futuristic zombie apocalypse.
I first met Juan at Collective Con in Jacksonville, Florida. I bought both issues of Tommy, a psychological horror story about a child whose pet rabbit is a serial killer. I fell in love with Juan’s art style. It is in the same vein as Sam Keith and Skottie Young that combines a cartoonish style with dark grittiness. Think an unholy cross between Looney Tunes and Tales From The Crypt. Since then, I have followed Juan’s work and always look forward to hearing about the next project he is involved in.

Special Mention: Misery
Directed by Rob Reiner
Screenplay by William Goldman
1990, USA
Genre: Thriller
Elevated by standout performances from James Caan and Kathy Bates, Misery remains one of the best Stephen King adaptations to date. Director Rob Reiner is clearly more interested in the dark humour and humanity than the gory detail in King’s novel, but make no mistake about it, Misery is a tough watch soaked in sharp dialogue, a brooding atmosphere, and disturbing bodily harm inflicted on James Caan by sweet old Kathy Bates. I can still feel his pain.
129. Black Sabbath (Three Faces of Fear)
Mario Bava and Salvatore Billitteri
Written by Ennio De Concini and Mario Serandrei
Italy 1960 / Italy 1963
Genre: Horror Anthology
Not to be confused with Black Sunday, Black Sabbath is a horror anthology composed of three atmospheric tales. “The Drop of Water” concerns a nurse who steals a ring off a corpse, only...

Cherry Bombed chimes in via her monthly Coffin Couture article with some badass dresses, denim vests & cosmetics!
Maya Hansen’s’ “Heavy Metal” couture corset dress.
Well, here we are girls and boys. It’s almost the end of January and if you’re still trying to shake off the stress of the Horrorday season, I’ve got the cure. Or at least some suggestions that will help kick start your 2015. First up are the couture creations of Madrid designer, Maya Hansen. Hansen has been making corsets and corset dresses since 2006. Hansen’s 2010 “Heavy Metal” themed collection was inspired from artwork used by bands like Kiss, Iron Maiden and the Misfits, so I thought I’d share some of her eye-popping designs. A few more images from Hansen’s headbanging walk down the runway follow.
Couture Western “Show” Jacket by Lisa Nelle. $795.
La designer and Equine enthusiast, Lisa Nelle, makes high-end couture for the horse-riding elite.

Some people would say that 1968 was the greatest year in Heavy Metal history. That year the founders of the genre, Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple, and Black Sabbath, were formed. If it hadn’t been for those guys nothing else would have followed and that, as they say, is that.
Then there are rest of us who would love to smack those people in the face. The seventies came to a terrible end with the towering giants of Zeppelin and Sabbath crashing hard. The bright star that was Deep Purple had burnt out a long time before. It was a time for a changing of the guard, time for Heavy Metal music to take things up a notch if it was going to stay alive.

In the 1980s, heavy metal went mainstream. The dark themes and brain-busting riffage of bands like Black Sabbath and Deep Purple suddenly fell out of favor--replaced by a new legion of metalheads whose themes of girls, partying, girls, drugs, and girls were presented amid shredding solos and power ballads and who were, for some reason, more acceptable to the masses. In this ultimate guide, acclaimed heavy-metal journalist Martin Popoff examines hair metal in an all-encompassing oral history jacked up by a kaleidoscope of outrageous and previously unpublished quotes, anecdotes, photos, and memorabilia. The Big Book of Hair Metal: The Illustrated Oral History of Heavy Metal's Debauched Decade features the observations of dozens of musicians, producers, promoters, label execs, and hanger-...

Near on two weeks into the new year it’s safe to assume that we’ve all had our fill of best of year lists. 2013 was an excellent year for metal, seeing new releases from legends Black Sabbath and Dream Theater plus a plethora of outstanding albums from a variety of bands across the multitudinous sub-genres of metal.
Now that we’re done looking wistfully back at the year that was the question quickly becomes, what will 2014 bring?
What bands are poised to unleash new metal brutality upon an unsuspecting world? Which of all the forthcoming new releases, both scheduled and rumoured, are we most anticipating? A word on the selection process is in order: by no means is this intended to be a definitive list, ‘the top 10′ or all that sort of thing. The criteria for those chosen are entirely subjective.

Heavy metal was always about rebellion. From the beginning, it was a haven for the maladjusted and misanthropic. If flowers had no power over you, there was Black Sabbath. If four on the floor made you snore, there was Kiss. (At least until they did that disco song.) Even when Poison and Whitesnake were acceptable to the MTV mainstream, there were the louder, faster avenues of thrash and death metal.
Today, it’s hard to find anyone under a hundred years old who doesn’t at least tolerate metal. Satan’s favorite sounds are heard on the radio and at sporting events, and are even used to sell cars and energy drinks. Faster than you can say, “Jack Black in a kids’ movie,” metal went from underground to mainstream.
It’s fitting, therefore, that mainstream acceptance of metal has coincided with that of another subculture: the nerd. Of course,...

Heavy Metal is a broad term and a very broad church: there are umpteen variations on its basic theme and there are sub genres galore. However, the single thread which binds these disparate pieces is a loud, overdriven, distorted guitar wielded with intent. Non fans traditionally are quick to dismiss the music as entirely without merit and at this point I’ll say hello to Jason Isaacs who recently described the peerless Lamb Of God as, “People having some kind of epileptic fit in charge of a guitar.” Of course, the perpetual allure of Heavy Metal is that outsiders, such as Mr Isaacs, just don’t get it and for this reason it remains a consistently popular form of music, constantly shifting its shape to adapt to the times whilst managing to maintain its core appeal of rebellion.
Despite its foremost protagonists being American, heavy metal is essentially a British creation.

Harking back to the glory days of Black Sabbath and similar proto-doom bands such as Pentagram and Witchfinder General, Doom Metal officially emerged in the mid-1980s and has remained eternally unfashionable, yet beloved by its fans ever since.
Performed by musicians who truly worship the riff, Doom Metal incorporates slower tempos (particularly in comparison to the Thrash Metal and Hair Metal sound popular at its emergence) and a thick-as-molasses guitar sound that positively rumbles from your speakers, this genre evokes an undeniable sense of despair, dread and impending doom with every note and vocalisation.
Commerciality and record sales are never high on the list when you form a Doom band, this is music made by traditionalists who lurk in the shadows, eternally embracing the morbid and mournful elements of life. Of all the genres of music that exist in the world, metal probably receives the least credit. It's controversial, for sure, and aside from rap, it's the only other music that has an unfair, biased connotation to it. People think "metal" and they think of long, hair-sprayed hair, or ridiculous glam performances from the '80s. The truth is, metal is a wide, expansive genre with several different subgenres -- including, but definitely not limited to, Norwegian black metal, nu metal and thrash metal.
Canadian metalheads Scot McFadyen and Sam Dunn are the uncontested historians of metal. Their debut metal feature, Metal: A Headbanger's Journey, was released in 2005 to amazing reception, and since then they've been creating more documentaries. Their latest, Metal Evolution, is an 11-episode collection of historical and expository vignettes, focusing on how metal has grown into its own distinct genre.

Heavy metal fans, this one's for you. We've got an exclusive first look at the poster for "Last Days Here," a new documentary from Don Argott and Demian Fenton about the life and times of Bobby Liebling, front man of the cult metal band Pentagram.
Check out the poster beyond the break!
"Last Days Here" is described as "a raw yet unexpectedly touching portrait of cult metal legend Bobby Liebling, chronicling his bid to resurrect his life and career after decades wasting away in his parents’ basement. Liebling made his mark in the ‘70s as the outrageous frontman of Pentagram, a 'street' Black Sabbath whose heavy metal riffs once blew audiences’ minds. But various acts of self-destruction, multiple band break-ups and botched record deals eventually condemned his music to obscurity. Now in his 50's, wasted by hardcore drug use and living on the charity of his ever-patient mother and father...

From the early nineteen seventies, horror movies have inspired different bands. In a way, Horror films have inspired a genre of music in itself, Heavy Metal. The one band that inspired and began the metal movement was inspired themselves, by the Horror genre. They are called Black Sabbath. The guitar player has taken his love for Horror one step further with recently making his own Horror franchise entitled ominously enough… Black Sabbath.

In compiling a list of the 10 heaviest heavy metal albums, I have decided to reject those that are simply loud or controversial in their subject matter. I will use musical and lyrical aggression to detail what exemplifies true heaviness in the realm of Heavy Metal.
Since the likes of Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin and Deep Purple introduced us to amplified distortion and roaring vocals, many bands have supplemented all the traditional elements with developed elements of Heaviness.
Now I was never a Metal Head when I was a teenager. I properly introduced myself to Heavy Metal when I was about 20. So I was never a part of the scene, I never had long hair or wore spikes on my wrists. And unlike one of my friends, I never had 666 tattooed on the inside of my lip. I see Heavy Metal music as a distinct and impressive sub section of music...

Some of Heavy Metal’s greatest headbangers have joined together to form a massive supergroup for charity.
Black Sabbath’s Tony Iommi and Deep Purple’s Ian Gillan will front WhoCares, a charity band that also features Whitesnake keyboardist Jon Lord and Iron Maiden drummer Nicko McBrain. Metallica bassist Jason Newsted has also joined the band for two charity songs due out shortly.
According to Gillan.com, the band “has recorded two brand new songs with the intent to support the rebuilding of a music school in Gyumri, Armenia. Both Gillan and Iommi have spent a lot of time in Armenia, fallen in love with the country and the people and have dedicated a lot of work to a nation still shocked after the earthquake that struck Armenia on December 7, 1988 at 11:41am.”

Classic animated fantasy Heavy Metal got its high-definition debut back in January as a Best Buy exclusive, but on June 21, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment brings out the cult movie on Blu-ray through all retailers.
The 1981 film, which features the voices of John Candy (Planes, Trains and Automobiles), Eugene Levy (American Pie) and Harold Ramis (Stripes), is one of our favorite animated movies for adults — parents, this one is not for your kids. The science-fiction movie is an anthology of short films that tells about the battle between good and evil (personified by a glowing green orb from outer space that’s spreading destruction throughout the universe). Included in the segments are some sexy scenes involving a woman and a robot.
Based on the illustrated magazine by the same name, the R-rated, 90-minute Heavy Metal was produced by Ivan Reitman (No Strings Attached) and includes music by Black Sabbath, Blue Oyster Cult,...

If you’re not clear on the distinction between Progressive Metal, Speed Metal and Neo-classical Metal, have we got a site for you. The Map of Metal lays it all out in a denim and silver scull studded sea of terminology all meant to clear up the confusion in any headbanger’s addled mind.
When you load the site you are greeted with a booming blast of the self-titled Black Sabbath tune from 1970 and a definition of what exactly Heavy Metal is. As the legend explains, “With roots in blues-rock and psychedelic rock, the bands that created heavy metal developed a thick, massive sound, characterized by highly amplified distortion, extended guitar solos, emphatic beats and overall loudness.”

Ozzy Osbourne has been allowed to proceed with his lawsuit against guitarist Tony Iommi last week. The Godfather of Heavy Metal is accusing the guitarist of illegally trademarking their band Black Sabbath's name.
Ozzy filed the suit against Iommi in May, claiming Iommi falsely proclaimed he is the sole owner of the band's name by filing an application with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. He wants a 50 percent stake of the Black Sabbath trademark and a portion of Iommi's profits from the use of the name.
Iommi's lawyer argued that Ozzy had signed away all his rights to the trademark when he quit in 1979, but Ozzy's camp said that agreement was a "red herring" that was "repudiated" when he rejoined the group in 1997.
On Thursday's court hearing, Judge John Koeltl ruled that the suit can proceed, but urged both sides to "consider mediation," as per the New York Post.

Can you see this bill in the making? The Melvins have Big Business. Now Clutch, Fireball Ministry, Cky and Fu Manchu have a stake in the sludge rock supergroup The Company Band. As the Melvins have recently toured a number of times under both themselves and Big Business on the same gig, you can picture a tag-team tour with any of the aforementioned home base groups bringing along The Company Band for a joint road haunt with Buzz Osborne and his drone posse. Assuredly it would need to be tagged The Corporate Takeover Tour…

The founding fathers of modern-day Heavy Metal music, it's indeed disconcerting to see former "Black Sabbath" band members Ozzy Osbourne and Tony Iommi engaged in a legal dispute over a "commercial property." Alas, that's exactly what's happening.Reported this weekend by Reuters, 60 year-old Osbourne, who was kicked out of the band in 1979 (to go on to a massively successful solo career) is suing his old guitarist, Iommi, for "falsely claiming to be the sole owner of the Black Sabbath name." According to Osbourne, he's "sorry" he had to file a lawsuit ...

Reality TV star Kelly Osbourne has hit out at British television bosses after they banned her from swearing.
The 23-year-old daughter of nm1277292 autoBlack Sabbath[/link] frontman Ozzy and music mogul Sharon - who fronts Sky Tv's reality fashion show Project Catwalk - is sick of being told off for using bad language.
And she accuses producers of displaying double standards because they allowed another TV judge to utter profanities on air last year.

Rocker Ozzy Osbourne has been diagnosed with Parkin Syndrome and will have to take daily medication for the rest of his life to combat the involuntary shudders associated with the condition. The former Black Sabbath star was given the all-clear for Parkison's disease in 2003, after he complained his tremors were "practically destroying (his) life". And the 56-year-old singer presumed his body shakes were a result of a lifetime of drug abuse, until doctors recently told him he has inherited the condition from his relatives. He says, "I'd always assumed it was the booze and stuff. Now I've found it all stems from the family. It's called Parkin but it's not Parkinson's. Anything to do with the central nervous system has the word Parkin in it. "A doctor in Los Angeles tried to tell me I had multiple sclerosis. And I believed him until I had a second opinion. "When I told my sisters she said, 'Not you as well? Mum had that and Auntie Elsie and your grandma.' "I'm like, 'Thanks for f**king telling me'. Me walking around thinking I've got some drug paralysis."...

Stolen gold and silver discs won by Ozzy Osbourne's band Black Sabbath have been recovered after thieves dumped them behind recycling bins. The discs were reported missing last week after a burglary at the home of Osbourne's former manager Patrick Meehan, in Kent, England. Kent Police say an anonymous tip led them to the eight discs, found Wednesday in a plastic bag dumped behind trash cans. Two other discs stolen in the haul - which included the albums Master Of Reality, Paranoid and Black Sabbath, Vol. 4 - had already been returned after being offered for sale on internet auction website eBay. The break-in came just weeks after Osbourne unsuccessfully tackled a burglar, who stole $3.6 million worth of jewels from his family's mansion in Buckinghamshire, England.

British royal Prince Charles took time out of last night's Royal Variety Performance to console Sharon Osbourne over her recent $3.8 million burglary and her husband Ozzy's recurring quad bike injury. The heir to the throne was disappointed the former Black Sabbath star was forced to cancel his appearance at the London Coliseum event, due to complications with the metal shoulder plate he had inserted after last year's accident. The Prince also sympathized about intruders who stole irreplaceable jewelry from the Osbournes' Buckinghamshire, England, home last month, and offered his condolences to Osbourne over her recent spell of bad luck. He asked, "How's Ozzy? I heard about your burglary." She replied, "It was awful, but thankfully Ozzy is OK."...

Rocker Ozzy Osbourne has ordered extreme new security measures at his mansion to prevent a repeat of the $3.6 million jewelry theft earlier this week. The former Black Sabbath star bravely held one of the two intruder's in a headlock and dangled him out of a window at his Chalfont St Peter, Buckinghamshire home before the thief struggled free, escaping with irreplaceable gems, including his wife Sharon Osbourne's wedding and engagement rings. But the 55-year-old is making sure he's prepared for future trespassers, by hiring 24-hour security guards and installing laser "tripwires," guard dogs and a series of watchtowers. An insider explains, "He's shocked and angry. He can't understand how what he thought was a good security system failed."...

Rocker Ozzy Osbourne considered murdering a thief Monday night who stole his wife Sharon Osbourne's wedding ring and a sapphire "survival" jewel celebrating her successful battle with cancer. The former Black Sabbath star held the intruder in a headlock and dangled him out of a window of his Chalfont St Peter, Buckinghamshire, mansion, 30 feet above the ground. And the 55-year-old rocker admits he was tempted to break the burglar's neck and pretend it was an accident, before the robber dropped to the ground and escaped with irreplaceable jewelry worth more than $4 million. He says, "I dived and grabbed him. I had him in a headlock, the rest of his body was dangling out of the window. He was choking. He was scared, so was I. I didn't know if he had a knife or a gun. I thought for a mad split second, 'I could snap your neck like a straw, snap it and let you fall and say it was an accident.' But then I just let him drop, I couldn't kill him, I couldn't live with that on my conscience. There is so much love in these things, and these people have taken our love away as if it is worthless."...

Rocker Kelly Osbourne suffered a mental breakdown last year following "12 months of hell". Kelly admits she caved in to depression after a catalog of personal disasters since 2002 left her feeling burnt out. The singer was left devastated when her mother Sharon Osbourne was diagnosed with colon cancer, her rocker beau Bert McCracken split with her and her brother Jack was treated in rehab for his drug addiction. Charismatic Kelly - whose legendary father Ozzy nearly died in December when he crashed his quad bike - also struggled to cope with the Black Sabbath star's return to his alcohol ways, brought about by his wife's illness. And on top of all her family crises, she was axed by her record label Epic - something she didn't know about until she read it in a magazine. She says, "My mum nearly died, somebody who I thought I was in love with broke my heart, my brother went into rehab, my dog Lulu died and I got dropped by my record company. It just seemed to be getting worse and worse and to be honest with you, it gave me a nervous breakdown in the summer. I got sent home from Europe because I was exhausted and emotionally f***ed. I've had to deal with every single person in the world judging me."...

Sharon Osbourne was so elated to have her rocker husband Ozzy back with her in America, she paid for a sky-high banner to fly in the skies welcoming him home. After weeks of recovery, Ozzy made his way back to California on last week, and immediately made his way over to his favorite eatery Lulu's Alibi, where he ate a baguette stuffed with French fries and covered with HP sauce and malt vinegar - named the Ozzy Sandwich in his honor. Owner Lulu says, "When he came in he looked amazingly well - he was in great spirits and was hysterically funny." MTV executives are considering screening footage of Ozzy Osbourne's recovery from a quad bike crash on his hit reality show. Producers of The Osbournes are trying to decide whether the former Black Sabbath frontman's rehabilitation - which may take up to six months - is suitable "prime time" material for broadcast. A source tells gossip website The Scoop, "We already went through Sharon Osbourne's recovery from cancer. We don't want (the show) to become General Hospital." Ozzy fell off the bike at his English estate in Buckinghamshire last Monday, leaving him with six broken ribs and a cracked vertebra in his neck. He has only recently been taken off a ventilator to aid his breathing. Rocker Ozzy Osbourne will take six months to recover from injuries sustained after his quad bike accident last Monday. The 55-year-old singer is now able to breathe unaided and is celebrating his first number one British single, a duet of the 1972 Black Sabbath song "Changes" with daughter Kelly Osbourne. Wife Sharon Osbourne has revealed it will take around half a year for her wildman husband - who slept for a week following the crash - to fully recover. She says, "Probably about six months. But he will be back, he's not going anywhere. He'll be ordering everybody around, don't worry. He is doing so good. He's so much better. He's off the ventilator and breathing on his own, he just has some assistance with some oxygen but he's doing it all on his own. He's awake and he's causing havoc. He's busy telling jokes all the time, he's already asked two nurses to marry him. It's just amazing what the body does within a period of 24 hours. I saw him the night before and there was no movement, nothing. I came in the next day and he was moving around, his eyes were wandering. He can't talk properly but he's got a little raspy voice. He has never had a number one and for me it just goes to show how much people love him. It's a dream come true for him. The first thing I told him when he came to was about his single. Wildman rocker Ozzy Osbourne gained full consciousness yesterday for the first time since undergoing emergency surgery - and whispered the words "I love you" to his worried family. The former Black Sabbath star - who was badly injured in a quad bike crash on Monday - managed to raise a thumb of reassurance to his concerned wife Sharon Osbourne and daughter Kelly. Ozzy had been sedated for two days following his surgery on Monday, but his family stuck by his side at Wexham Park Hospital in Slough, south England - and they were thrilled when the reality TV star awoke. And although he made it his priority to assure chat-show host Sharon and singer Kelly he was in good spirits, the charismatic rocker also found time to complain about the nurses - much to his family's delight. Kelly says, "He woke up today but he can't speak because of the tube. He's able to mouth words and he told us he loved us. He's been complaining about the nurses so we know he's all right. He gave me the thumbs-up and stuck his tongue out at me." Kelly adds she's not "100 per cent sure" how the accident at his home in Chalfont St Peter, Buckinghamshire, south England happened, but believes the recreational bike hit a hole in the ground, causing Ozzy to fly off the vehicle before it landed on him.
