Michael Scott is a beloved character from The Office, with some pretty unorthodox methods. The regional manager of Dunder Mifflin Scranton is known for his outlandish behavior, leading some to wonder how he ever landed his job. However, as the seasons go on, fans may have noticed that Michael is more clever than he seems. On several occasions, he was a downright genius.

“Threat Level Midnight” is an underrated half-hour of The Office. The episode, which aired in February 2011, is one of the show’s highest-concept narratives: a meta-exercise in which the characters watch a fake movie they made themselves, from a script that they discovered five seasons earlier. It’s about a fictional secret agent named Michael Scarn, played by Michael Scott, played by Steve Carell. It’s filled with ’70s disco music, Will Smith-esque pop-rap and coordinated dances. At the time, “Threat Level Midnight” was a bold move from a show deep into its run.

Fox debuted to new potential comedy hits on Tuesday, as “Grandfathered” and “The Grinder” aired their series premieres. The sitcoms both star ’80s heartthrobs — John Stamos and Rob Lowe respectively — and have already received critical acclaim and positive reviews. Can you make an entire sitcom out of the fact that Stamos looks really, really good for a man in his 50s? As it turns out, yes, especially when “The Office” writer Daniel Chun pens such a witty script. As for the 8:30 p.m. slot, Lowe and “Wonder Years” star Fred Savage are perfectly paired and even more affable together than they are.

Can you make an entire sitcom out of the fact that John Stamos looks really, really good for a man in his 50s? As it turns out, yes. With Daniel Chun (“The Office,” “Hello Ladies” and “Happy Endings”) penning a quick-witted script, “Grandfathered” subverts every hokey cliche that it nearly crashes into by maintaining a savvy self-awareness. Stamos plays Jimmy Martino, a successful Los Angeles restaurateur who’s a fixture in the dining room at Jimmy’s every night, delivering the same flattering line to every female who walks through the door. He’s always found at the center of a glamorous coterie of.

There’s a pervading sweetness running throughout Fox’s new sitcom Grandfathered, premiering alongside The Grinder this fall. Although both shows feature a somewhat cliche structure that’s largely the same, in reverse – Rob Lowe returning to his family in The Grinder, John Stamos discovering he even has one in Grandfathered – where this show prevails slightly over Lowe’s sitcom is in two important areas. One: it’s funny. Two: I wouldn’t mind spending a few weeks getting to know these characters more. Both facts run right in the face of the show’s stock playboy-settles-down plot arc, which lets its characters move around and have fun thanks to its simplicity, unlike The Grinder‘s stifling, largely humorless stranglehold over nearly everyone on screen.
The show opens with Jimmy Martino (John Stamos) making the rounds at Jimmy’s, the local fancy restaurant he owns and operates.

Happy Endings, Season 3, Episode 9: “Ordinary Extraordinary Love”
Written by Daniel Chun
Directed by Michael A. Price
Airs Sundays at 10pm (Et) and Tuesdays at 9pm (Et) on ABC
We find the group sitting around their usual table and having a casual drink with each other when Max comes running in complaining about his love life. The group throws a few jabs at one another before the episode gets underway. This time around we find Jane paired up with Max as the two of them, accompanied with Derek, go out to find just who Max is and why he can’t find a guy. The storyline does bring us a few laughs and Adam Pally makes you feel sincerely sorry for the quick chirping Max.
Dave and Brad are placed together in the episode, which is a nice change. Now that Alex and Dave are back together these two hardly ever get paired up.

Exclusive: In his first stab at development under his overall deal with ABC Studios, former The Office head writer Daniel Chun has sold two single-camera comedy projects, one to Fox and one to ABC. No Worries, which has received a script commitment plus penalty at Fox, centers on a serious man eager to settle down who realizes that his brother and everyone else his age is pushing off adulthood as long as possible. If, at first, you don’t succeed in adapting a property incongruous to film as a medium, say “screw it” and try again. I like to think that’s the thinking behind Deadline‘s story, which reports that Warner Bros., Thunder Road, and Motion Theory are looking toward The Guinness Book of World Records — arguably one of the least-based-in-narrative books one could imagine — as the basis for an action-adventure film.
Daniel Chun (The Office, The Simpsons) is working on the screenplay, with the assignment requiring him to translate various records into a blockbuster that, at the same time, has “global appeal.” So, we can expect that woman who bulges out her eyes, somebody whose entire body is tattooed, a person who played the world’s longest guitar solo, and so on to provide clues that lead to an amazing treasure of untold riches. The outlook is not good for NBC’s “The Office.” Executive producer and show-runner Paul Lieberstein, who plays Hr rep Toby on the series, is stepping down from the show and helping only in a “reduced behind-the-scenes capacity,” according to the Hollywood Reporter.
Instead, Lieberstein will focus his attention on “The Farm,” an “Office” spin-off that will star Rainn Wilson and center on Dwight Schrute’s beet farm/bed-and-breakfast. (Great, because characters hanging out on a farm worked so well for “The Walking Dead.”) And, unfortunately, Dwight will have to manage without Mose, his Amish cousin. Lieberstein told Vulture they will need to find a way to explain his absence, since the person who plays him, Michael Schur, is busy writing and running “Parks and Recreation.” Lieberstein’s spin-off is in development for pilot season, which means it’s not necessarily headed to series yet. Fans of NBC’s The Office were cautiously optimistic when star Steve Carell departed the series last spring. Although quite clearly the heart and soul of the show, many hoped that the incredibly strong ensemble cast would carry the series through at least a few more successful seasons without the hapless Michael Scott at thte helm. But sadly, it already looks as though the remaining Dunder Mifflin crew is starting to splinter. James Spader has announced his exit after a year on the show as office jedi Robert California. Show writer and actor Mindy Kaling has an uncertain future on the show, depending on whether her her pilot is picked up over at Fox, and head-writer Daniel Chun has signed a deal with rival network ABC.

After stints at The Simpsons and The Office, Daniel Chun is embarking on development with a two-year overall deal at ABC Studios. The seven-figure pact, which will start in the summer, was made in a competitive situation, with ABC going agressively after the sought-after writer-producer. “Danny is multi-talented in that he’s not only a fantastic writer but a terrific producer,” ABC Studios’ Svp and head of creative development Patrick Moran said. “We’re continuing to strengthen our comedy roster, and getting Danny to add his unique voice to our team is a real coup for us.” Before segueing into his ABC Studios deal, Chun will finish up his duties on The Office through the end of the season and will make his directing debut with an episode of the Emmy-winning comedy this spring. While studying biological anthropology at Harvard, Chun honed his comedy writing skills at the famed Harvard Lampoon.

We know the big "Office" news this week is the debut of Will Ferrell as new/interim Dunder Mifflin manager Deangelo Vickers. But allow us to look a month or so ahead, to the season finale.
The final episode of the season -- and third of the post-Michael Scott era -- will feature guest stars Ray Romano, Catherine Tate, Will Arnett and James Spader. And thanks to "Office" writer/producer/Kelly Mindy Kaling, we now know their characters' names.
"William Arnett plays 'Fred Henry,' Raymond Romano plays 'Merv Bronte,' and James Spader plays 'Robert California,'" Kaling tweeted on Tuesday (with the blessing of "Office" showrunner/Toby Paul Lieberstein). "These are real, guys."
Tate's character, Kaling added a couple minutes later, is named Nellie Bertrum. She also takes credit for half of the "Merv Bronte" name, saying she suggested the last name and fellow writer Daniel Chun pitched "Merv.

As soon as we thought we could predict the outcome of the Oscars, here comes another surprise! This one's brought to you by the Writers Guild of America. Picked for Best Original Screenplay was Christopher Nolan's "Inception." The director, famously dissed for not getting a Best Director Oscar nomination, may just win the Best Original Screenplay come Oscar night. Oscar front-runner, "The King's Speech" was not nominated because it didn't quality under union rules which prompted Nolan to say during his WGA acceptance award that he looked forward to a time when he could accept the award "without qualification."
That could be the beginning of a great script Mr. Nolan, go write it :happy
For adapted screenplay, I'm happy to report that Aaron Sorkin's fantastic script won! Based on "The Accidental Billionaires" by Ben Mezrich, "The Social Network" was the only film last year that I predicted to win this very category.

"Modern Family" and "30 Rock", which have won Emmys, will be up against each other in comedy series and have each received two nods for episodic category. Meanwhile, "Breaking Bad" takes a nod in drama field and two additional episodic nominations.
AMC's "The Walking Dead" is vying for new series prize, battling "Boardwalk Empire", "Justified", "Treme" and "Men of a Certain Age" along the way. "Empire" in particular is also nominated for drama series against older and more prominent shows like "Mad Men" and "Dexter".

Pixar’s Up took home the top prize for Best Feature at the 37th Annual Annie Awards, an event that honors the best in animated movies and TV.
The soaring adventure is the favorite for the “Best Animated Feature” Oscar next month, especially since the Annies have predicted the winner seven out of nine times since the category was created in 2002.
Last year DreamWorks’ Kung Fu Panda pulled an upset over Pixar’s Wall-e, but this year the award went to the expected recepient and the only animated film nominated for “Best Picture.” In fact, Up is only the second entirely animated movie nominated for the top Academy prize since 1991’s Beauty and the Beast. It’s also nominated for original screenplay, sound editing, and musical score.

"Up" from Disney/Pixar won the top honor at the 37th Annual Annie Awards. The fantastic film received the Best Animated Feature Award beating out "Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs," "Coraline," "Fantastic Mr. Fox," "The Princess and the Frog," and "The Secret of Kells."
(Check my interview with Annie Award-winner Pete Docter for "Up" held at Pixar Animation Studios right here)
Walt Disney Animation took home six other Annies including three for "The Princess and the Frog" and three for its television production "Prep and Landing."
Created in 1972 by veteran voice talent June Foray, the Annie Awards is considered the highest and most prestigious honor given in animation by the animation industry.
The Annie Awards is also a great predictor of the annual Academy Award for Best Animated Feature. So yes, "Up" will win that category at the Oscars!

Pixar Animation Studio's "Up" was named best animated feature, and its helmer Pete Docter was honored for direction, at the 37th annual Annie Awards for animation, Saturday at UCLA's Royce Hall.
Other big winners in the Annie feature competition included Laika's "Coraline" and Disney's "The Princess and the Frog," which won three trophies each.
Nominated for five Academy Awards, "Up" is the odds-on favorite to win the Oscar for animated feature, and is only the second animated film to earn a nomination in the best picture category. It is also nominated for best screenplay, music and sound editing Oscars.
"We always look at these as films; we take them as seriously as anyone else does in this industry," Docter -- wearing an Ellie badge on his lapel -- said of the best picture nod. "The fact that our peers are looking at this film in the same way is just fantastic.
