The CW continues developing the DC Comics' 'magic' property "Traci Thirteen" as a live action TV series for producers Elizabeth Banks and Max Handelman:
Created by writer Joe Kelly and illustrator Dwyane Turner, 'Traci Thirteen' debuted in DC's "Superman" #189 (2003) as a 'Homo Magi' human, born with innate powers of sorcery.
"But Traci is forbidden by her father, 'Doctor Thirteen,' to practice magic, since her mother, 'Meihui Lan', died due to magical influences.
"Traci moved to the 'Suicide Slum' of 'Metropolis', determined to live on her own, with her pet iguana 'Leeroy'. There she began to tap into the 'urban magic' of Metropolis, and assumed the name of 'Girl 13.
Her powers include the ability to cast spells, teleport, fire blasts of energy, create force shields and the ability to transform her pet iguana into a dragon.

Sam Richardson and Tim Robinson’s Comedy Central series is good for two things:
Boosting the Motor City’s profile as a city rich with history that’s back on the rise, and Pure, ceaseless, bursts of joy
These are no small feats, and together they represent an undervalued commodity in television: kindness. As recently examined in the film world via IndieWire’s own David Ehrlich — whose continued shout-outs to “Paddington 2” and “Won’t You Be My Neighbor” serve as a form of #Nicecore on their own — “kindness can be a transformative force unto itself.” Television may have no better example than “Parks and Recreation,” a series so sweet and encouraging your eyes are welling up just thinking about any number of sincere moments. Michael Schur and Greg Daniels’ long-running NBC sitcom inspired millions with its clever comedy and earnest regard for humanity.
Now, “Detroiters” is putting its own spin on good old-fashioned benevolence.

Next month, Joe Casey and Ulises Farinas unleash their kick-ass, head-banging heroes on the world in New Lieutenants of Metal #1 from the Man of Action imprint at Image Comics. Ahead of the first issue release, I caught up with Joe Casey to talk about what we can expect from the new series, teaming up with Ulises Farinas, and being in a metal state of mind. We also have preview pages from the first issue!
Q: How did you come up with the idea of New Lieutenants of Metal and what can our readers expect from the new series?
Joe Casey: Believe it or not, the idea was delivered to me by a man on a flaming pie (as these things often are). The New Lieutenants of Metal are an elite strike force of heroic headbangers that exists to mete out harsh justice whenever and wherever necessary. They're a new breed of superhero,...

This trashy family fantasy – in which a lonely girl hunts giants in a handily creepy forest – confuses fake jeopardy with drama
There should be a separate genre heading for this film: time-wasting droopy fantasy. It is based on a graphic novel by Joe Kelly and Ken Niimura and directed by the Danish film-maker Anders Walter, who won an Oscar in 2014 for his short film Helium. From the outset, there is a heart-sinking sense of deja vu. Ja Bayona’s recent movie A Monster Calls – about a child retreating from emotional pain into CGI fantasy – had a certain storytelling force. But this awfully similar confection is flaccid: a pointless parade of unearned emotion, unearned drama, unearned everything.
Madison Wolfe plays Barbara, a lonely and troubled girl who regularly roams through the nearby forest hunting for “giants”, which we periodically get to see – sub-Iron-Giant/dementors. But there is no question of us,...

I Kill Giants is quite a name for a movie. A really good name actually because with that and the awesome artwork on its poster, I was immediately intrigued…. Based on the comic book of the same title, I Kill Giants tells the story of a troubled girl, Barbara (Madison Wolfe) who believes giants are coming to her town and she is the one to stop them. She has some help in new friend Sophia (Sydney Wade) as well as her sister Karen (Imogen Poots) and the school psychologist Mrs Molle (Zoe Saldana) who don’t initially believe what she is saying.
Those looking for a horror movie full of giant slaying might be a little disappointed to hear that this isn’t that kind of film.

MaryAnn’s quick take… A movie as thrillingly weird as its protagonist. We are totally enrapt by the wonder and the terror of her imagination, and the power of it to create joy and solace. I’m “biast” (pro): I’m desperate for movies about girls and women
I’m “biast” (con): nothing
I have not read the source material
(what is this about? see my critic’s minifesto) women’s participation in this film

I Kill Giants is not a fantasy movie. It’s a drama about fantasy: about the power of stories to help us understand our fears and cope with our anxieties and escape from our pain, at least for a little while. But in a rare creative conjunction, this movie is as thrillingly weird as its protagonist, 12-year-old Barbara Thorson (Madison Wolfe: The Conjuring 2, Joy). We have no doubt...

Originally published in 2009, Joe Kelly and Ken Niimura's graphic novel I Kill Giants introduced us to Barbara, an uncompromising teen girl dealing with some pretty big family issues while also saving her community from giants who randomly emerge to destroy her and everyone she loves.
Fast forward nearly a decade and now Kelly and NIimura's vision has been turned into a feature film directed by Oscar-winning Danish director Anders Walter, produced by Chris Columbus and starring Madison Wolfe, Zoe Saldana and Imogen Poots.
I Kill Giants is a really beautifully imagined story of a girl dealing with some heavy issues by retreating into herself and lashing out at everyone who tries to help her: from her sister, played by Poots, who has put her own life on hold to take...

Oscar-winning Danish filmmaker Anders Walter was vibrating with excitement when he boarded his flight to Canada, his debut feature was about to have its first press screening at the Toronto International Film Festival. It had been almost four years since he’d won the Academy Award for Best Live-Action Short, and the 39-year-old director had dedicated every one of them to the challenge of financing and filming “I Kill Giants.”
For all of Walter’s pedigree and potential, the project had been an uphill battle from the very beginning. It didn’t seem to matter that it was based on a popular graphic novel with a built-in fanbase, or that it would star Brie Larson and Zoe Saldana. Twice the movie was ready to roll; twice it had collapsed. But this was all behind him as he sat on the tarmac at Copenhagen Airport. When he left Denmark, his career...

Nearly 10 years ago, Image Comics released the first issue of writer Joe Kelly and artist Ken Niimura's I Kill Giants. The seven-issue series about a girl battling her own demons while trying to save her small town from colossal creatures has been a source of awe-inspiring fantasy and grounded family drama for the past decade, and beginning on March 23rd, those same elements will come to life on the big screen with Rlje Films' anticipated release of the I Kill Giants movie. To celebrate the new version of their coming-of-age tale, we caught up with Kelly and Niimura to discuss their thoughts on the feature film adaptation, reflect on the comic book's long journey to the big screen, and look ahead to their exciting collaborations in the future.
Joe and Ken, thanks for taking the time to discuss I Kill Giants, and congratulations on the new feature film based on your comic book miniseries.

Sneak Peek new footage, plus images from the upcoming thriller "I Kill Giants", directed by Anders Walter and written by Joe Kelly, based on his Image Comics series (2008), starring Madison Wolfe, Zoe Saldana and Imogen Poots, opening March 23, 2018:
"... it's about a girl who's a bit of an outsider – she's funny, but totally in geekland, obsessed with 'Dungeons & Dragons'. She doesn't have a lot of friends, she's a bit of a social misfit.
"She's taken her fantasy life a little far, and really only talks about giants to people. She's convinced that giants are real and giants are coming, and it's her responsibility to stop them when they show up.
"This weird little fantasy life that she's going has started seeping into her real life, and as we see things from her point of view, we see that she sees pixies and she sees signs in the...

While the main creative force behind I Kill Giants is unquestionably screenwriter Joe Kelly, who adapted his own limited comic series of the same name that he co-created with artist J.M. Ken Niimura, director Anders Walter’s past work including his Oscar-winning short, Helium, shows he’s hardly a stranger to the source material’s subject matter. Kelly and Niimura found success creating a work that reflects what happens when a child uses their imagination to confront a still abstract understanding of death.
It’s no surprise then that the two films I thought about while watching this adaptation were A Monster Calls and Where the Wild Things Are. I Kill Giants plays like a hybrid of sorts that’s just as cognizant of keeping things as darkly resonant. It’s okay for a family film targeting an audience that would call its lead (Madison Wolfe’s Barbara Thorson) a...

A teenage girl flees from emotional trauma into a world of make-believe peril in I Kill Giants, Anders Walter's adaptation of the comic book by Joe Kelly. Set in a Northeastern coastal community and making good use of local scenery, the picture creates an inviting world while treading much the same ground as last year's England-set Tiff entry A Monster Calls. Though less persuasive than that J.A. Bayona film, this one will find admirers on the fest circuit, resonating especially with fantasy-lovers who felt like outcasts in school.

Although the “Black Dawn” story arc currently unfolding in the pages of Superman may not be as strong as previous offerings, we can probably all agree that it’s still a decent read and that the creative team of Peter J. Tomasi, Pat Gleason and Doug Mahnke haven’t really steered us wrong since taking the wheel at the start of Rebirth.
If you’ve been keeping up with the title, you’re well aware that the Kent family’s neighbor who looks an awful lot like Wilford Brimley isn’t exactly what he seems to be and has so far succeeded in getting the drop on Batman and Superman alike. And from what we can tell, a mysterious force is pulling the strings of both him and the townsfolk.
Now, when the “Black Dawn” finale, Superman #25, was originally solicited, a cover didn’t accompany it, but here’s what...

Imogen Poots (Green Room, Roadies) has been cast in a new fantasy film with Zoe Saldana called I Kill Giants. They both join Madison Wolfe (True Detective, Joy), who will play the lead young girl in the film.
The film is based on a critically-acclaimed graphic novel written by Joe Kelly. The story follows a misfit girl named Barbara (Wolfe) who is battling both real and imaginary monsters in her life. Saldana is taking on the role of a school psychologist named Mrs. Mollé, who plays a key role by helping Barbara face both internal and external threats, forming an inspiring bond with her in the process.
There's no information on who Poots is playing, but she's a great actress that I've enjoyed watching in the films she's been in. I'm sure she'll be awesome in the movie.

Monsters can be a fine metaphor for real life problems – Joss Whedon used them to great effect in Buffy – and Joe Kelly and Ken Niimura’s graphic novel I Kill Giants pulls off a similar effort. It’s being adapted into a film with Zoe Saldana and Madison Wolfe attached to star. Wolfe will be Barbara Thorson, a girl struggling with life’s problems who escapes into a fantasy world of magic and creatures. Kelly, who has adapted the screenplay himself, describes it thusly: "It's a story about a girl who’s a bit of an outsider – she's funny, but totally in our geekland: she's obsessed with Dungeons & Dragons, she doesn't have a lot of friends, she’s a bit of a social misfit. She's taken her fantasy life a little far, and really only talks about giants to people. She's convinced that giants are real and giants are coming,...

Because one comic book movie franchise (Guardians of the Galaxy) isn’t enough, Zoe Saldana – who is of course also a prominent part of the Star Trek franchise – has now joined the cast of I Kill Giants. Academy Award winning short film director Anders Walter (Helium) is set to helm the graphic novel adaptation, while Chris Columbus (Harry Potter) is producing.
The I Kill Giants graphic novel was written by Joe Kelly (Deadpool), and follows Barbara, a misfit who battles both real and imaginary monsters. Saldana is set to play her school psychologist Mrs. Mollé. The two characters apparently form a bond, and Mollé ends up helping the youngster take on those monsters.
Taking on the role of Barbara will be Madison Wolfe, a young actress who made an appearance in the first season of True Detective and will next be seen in David O. Russell’s Joy starring Jennifer Lawrence.
