(directed by Scott Colthorp, 2010, USA, 88 min.)
Twenty -years after Star Trek creator Gene Roddenberry’s death, his son Eugene “Rod” Rodenberry examines the cultural and philosophical impact of the visionary science fiction franchise. Eugene was just 17 years old when his influential father passed away. At the time he couldn’t quite grasp the influence that the imaginative, unapologetically optimistic series had on generations of fans. As Eugene matured, however, his...

With Cannes now in full swing, the latest edition of Indiewire's curation of Hulu's Documentaries page indulges in some long-distance cinephilia. If you didn't make it out on the Croisette this year, let these selections - about film and filmmaking - remind you of your love for the cinema. Watch them now for free! A good place to start is by exploring the devotion certain films engender. Tariq Jalil's "A Galaxy Far Far Away" focuses on the anticipation for "The Phantom Menace" among hardcore "Star Wars" fans, while Scott Colthorp's "Trek Nation" shows the "Star Trek" franchise's lasting impact. The love of film crosses all genres and tastes - and even for a film deemed the best of the worst, as shown in Michael Stephenson's enjoyable "Best Worst Movie," detailing the making of the much-maligned "Troll 2" and its later success as a cult film. Underground films...

Director Scott Colthorp and narrator Eugene W. Roddenberry Jr. are set to finally debut their documentary "Trek Nation" on the Science cable channel Nov. 30. But getting from there to here was a path that took years -- and more than once almost seemed dead in its tracks. "Trek Nation" is a celebration of the Gene Roddenberry philosophy, his life, fandom and the journey of Gene's son to discover it. The two-hour documentary will feature many big names in Star Trek including J.J. Abrams, Nichelle Nichols, Ronald D. Moore and even Rick Berman. It will also include Stan Lee, George Lucas, Seth MacFarlane and more. Airlock Alpha has covered the project from its very beginning, a beginning that occurred in April 2003 when Roddenberry declared it was time to create an answer to the not-so-popular ...

Several years ago, I was one of the few honored with the chance to see a rough cut of a documentary Eugene W. Roddenberry Jr. and director Scott Colthorp was making called "Trek Nation." Even then, the project had been in development for a few years, and I was now excited to finally see what Rod and Scott had pulled off with the help of New Animal Productions. What I saw could be best described as a good start. There was Rod, exploring not only the philosophy of his famous father, Gene Roddenberry, but the life of the man himself. It was a personal journal, that sometimes got a little too personal. It was the cross between a documentary and a reality show, some of it featuring eye-opening interactions between Rod and his mother, Majel Barrett Roddenberry, and Rod being thrown off the ...

Scott Colthorp has been working on his Star Trek documentary Trek Nation for ten years now. I know because I have a friend who's worked on it for nearly as long, poring over countless hours of archival footage and interviews, honing and perfecting it and hoping to finally get it out to its fanbase. Scott's talked with dozens of people from every series, got inside access with Rod Roddenberry (Gene's son), and even interviewed scientists, writers, and rock stars all influenced by the...

I am not a Trekkie. I've seen some of the original series, a little more of The Next Generation, most of the films with the original cast, and the most recent one. I get why it has such a following, but it's just not my thing.
It wasn't Rod Roddenberry's thing, either, before his father passed away. Rod is the son of Gene Roddenberry, who created the Starship Enterprise and its inhabitants, but Rod, who was born some time after the first series was canceled, didn't really grow up influenced by Star Trek. Now he's on his own trek, to find out what Kirk, Spock, and the others mean to the millions of Star Trek fans and why.
His journey is the subject of a new documentary called Trek Nation, which doesn't have a distributor yet, but probably will in short order. It's a good trailer and Roddenberry and...

I’m nowhere as big a Star Trek geek as the dude in the Borg costume at about the 44 second mark in the below trailer, but I’ve been and still am a fan of the franchise, and I’d see this if it comes my way. It’s called Trek Nation, a documentary that looks at the long-lasting impact of Star Trek on pop culture and society in general. Directed by Scott Colthorp, who claims that it’s not just another Star Trek documentary, and goes beyond the contrived concepts of crazy conventions and over-passionate fans. No distribution yet…...

Like Trek? Then you’ve probably been liking it more than Eugene Roddenberry, only son of the late, great Gene Roddenberry, and who apparently didn’t have any idea that his daddy’s creation is beloved by a whole lotta people until Gene passed away. Dude must have been living in a cave all this time. Hey, that’s not me talking, that’s what Eugene (aka Rod) says in this trailer for Scott Colthorp’s Trek documentary “Trek Nation”. I’ve always been a fan of Trek, though I’ve never worn a Star Fleet Uniform to a Trek convention. Heck, I’ve never come even 100 miles of a Trek convention, but I find it amusing that Rod claims to never have enjoyed any of the Trek stuff until his dad passed away. Talk about being oblivious, especially when your household was probably crawling with Trek stuff. He didn...

I am a "Star Trek" fan in as much as I love the original series and particularly enjoy The Wrath of Khan, The Voyage Home as well as the latest Star Trek feature. I enjoyed "Enterprise," but never found any enjoyment "The Next Generation" cast other than finding First Contact a solid film and I haven't been inclined to see any of the other "Star Trek" spin-offs including "Deep Space Nine" and "Voyager". And as much as I enjoy certain elements of the "Star Trek" universe I can't say I wholly understand the Trekkie nation, but the upcoming documentary Trek Nation, directed by Scott Colthorp and led by "Star Trek" creator Gene Roddenberry's son, Rod Roddenberry, looks quite fascinating as the first trailer for the film has arrived.
