Saudi Arabia may be the biggest star at this year’s Cannes Film Festival.
The Arab kingdom, which is hosting three panels at the film gathering ranging from theatrical distribution to digital content, has taken up a sprawling space at the Marché du Film, and is handing out ornate booklets to festivalgoers that tout its wealth, burgeoning population of consumers and exotic filming locations. It’s part of a global coming out party for Saudi Arabia, a culturally conservative and oil-rich nation, that just lifted a three-decade ban on cinemagoing.
“You’re starting with a clean slate,” said Hamid Hashemi, CEO of iPic, a luxury theater chain that’s building theaters in Saudi Arabia, at CinemaCon last month. “There’s a market of 33 million people… It’s a sophisticated, affluent audience. They’re well-educated and all speak fluent English. They travel to Dubai and all over the place just to watch a movie.

Alien Abduction
Written by Robert Lewis
Directed by Matty Beckerman
USA, 2014
Let me start this review by destroying my credibility: I actually like found footage horror movies. No, like’s too weak a word; I love them. I actively seek out every one of them I can find. Whenever a new one comes up on Netflix, VOD, or in the theaters, I can’t help but be a bit giddy. At least once a month, I check IMDb or other film sites for lists of the things, hoping to stumble across a new one I haven’t seen. I know this puts me in an undistinguished minority of critics, but I can’t help it; something about the way they use perspective, the way they tell their stories, the treatment of the camera as a subjective character, it just works for me, and it works with what I find frightening.

Not a huge confession here: the "horror / sci-fi" combo is my favorite type of movie. From the top of the heap (aka Alien) to the lowest rung on the ladder (pick one of the Resident Evil sequels), if it combines those two most fantastical of genres into one story, that's a film I want to see. Another obvious confession: in recent years I've grown rather fond of the "found footage" style of horror filmmaking.
So obviously a new indie film that tosses horror, science fiction, and found footage into a blender is bound to keep me entertained for 71 minutes, right? Wrong. The blandly titled (and plainly inaccurate) Alien Abduction is virtually worthless. "Virtually," because this tiresome piece of Diy nonsense could probably work as an academic tool; you could call the lecture "How not to make a found footage film."

Title: Alien Abduction Director: Matty Beckerman Starring: Peter Holden, Katherine Sigismund, Corey Eid, Jillian Clare, Jeff Bowser, Riley Polanski There will be a time when young, aspiring indie filmmakers return predominantly to shooting what they know, which will give us a surge in chatty, beer-soaked navel-gazing — a quality that would almost seem radical in today’s cinematic environment. This is not yet that time, however, as the extraordinarily derivative, forthrightly titled and essentially pointless “Alien Abduction” confirms. Eschewing more sophisticated and higher-degree-of-difficulty moodiness for lots of panicked thrashing about, this found-footage horror tale is an exercise in well-intentioned tedium. The story centers on a vacationing family in Western North Carolina, comprised [ Read More ]

Matty Beckerman’s unsettling extraterrestrial thriller, Alien Abduction, will be landing on VOD and in limited theatrical release via IFC Midnight on April 4th and we had a chance to catch up with the director and discuss all things extraterrestrial.
Based around the real-life Brown Mountain Lights phenomenon down in North Carolina, a vacationing family winds up taking a much longer ride than they had planned for. Below, Beckerman himself talks in detail about the film and what inspired him to look up to the stars to find his latest inspiration.
DC: I’ve seen a lot of found footage movies, more than I care to even mention, and few of them were as effective as this one actually is. The Brown Mountain Lights are based on an actual phenomena, correct?
Mb: Oh yeah, it’s very very real. I’ve seen the lights myself and taken video of them and pictures of them.

Credit this spirited, uncommonly effective found-footage thriller for breaking the templates promised by its genre and title. Director Matty Beckerman forgoes the usual 90 minutes of portents and shadows, instead revealing the beasties about a half-hour in, and doesn't even bother with the yanked-from-bed-by-flying-saucers routine, perhaps because we're not yet so far gone as a culture that audiences would believe sleepwalkers documenting their adventures via video camera.
The setup is true-story hokum about foo lights in the mountains of North Carolina. "When them lights show up, bad shit gets to happenin'," a helpful backwoods fellow explains to the suburban family whose weekend campout has become a scramble through black forests, creaking basements, and barns flooded with wo...

If you find yourself questioning the possibility of usable footage being salvaged from a video camera that fell from an alien spaceship flying high up in the Earth's atmosphere, you might as well just forget about watching Matty Beckerman's Alien Abduction. Said camera once belonged to an autistic boy, Riley Morris (Riley Polanski), who studiously documented pretty much every single second of the Morris family's vacation to Brown Mountain in North Carolina. Presumably Riley's annoying affinity for experiencing everything via the viewfinder of his video camera is in some way related to his autism, but whether or not that is true can be left up to the medical experts to decide. Again, if you find yourself questioning the reasons why Riley never turns his camera off, no matter how mundane or dangerous the world is around him, then Alien Abduction is probably not for you. Sure, some of the...

I’ve been watching a ton of “found footage” lately, not because I’ve furiously been seeking out such subgenre work, but those are the screeners that have been falling into my lap. There’s been a nice variation, from cyber killers to zombies, vampires to the paranormal, but my most recent “found footage” watch branches into different territory – the final frontier. Alien Abduction is exactly that, a recounting of events that end with a camping family being abducted – but it stumbles into every generic “found footage” pitfall along the way. Mix that with my lack of interest in abduction stories, and you’ve got a sci-fi horror flick that’s a dizzying whirl of costumed actors, screaming children, and fuzzy imagery. Until I wake up to...

Cinéma-vérité style found footage flicks are all the rage lately thanks to their low production costs and usually profitable returns. Combine this with the resurgence of alien flicks and you've got box office gold, right? At least that's what the people pumping things out are hoping for.
Our brothers in harm over at Bloody Disgusting are reporting that Matty Beckerman, executive producer of The Experiment and Isolation, is getting behind the camera for his directorial debut.
Currently untitled, the horror flick will be a found footage experience about aliens. Penned by Robert Alvin Lewis, the big news is that it is being produced by none other than Mike Fleiss, the man behind Shark Night 3D, Hostel, Hostel: Part II, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (2003)! Cathy Beckerman (Isolation, The Experiment) also produces.
The movie will follow the Johnsons on a road trip to Florida where they land in the middle of a hurricane.

Ever wonder where some films find their funding? An interesting bit of trivia was pointed out to me today that seemed relevant given the escalating madness occurring in Libya. At the start of this week, we showed you a trailer for Stephen Kay's upcoming thriller Isolation . Natural Selection is financed by Al-Saadi Qadhafi, son of Libyan President Moammar Gadhafi. Who would you rather see play a character described by Deadline as "a hulking 6'4" and 300 pound" contract killer who "lived what on the surface was a quiet life as husband and father in New Jersey"? Mickey Rourke or Michael Shannon? It's a question buyers at the American Film Market are facing right now as they decide between two dueling features centered on Richard Kuklinski, the notorious contract killer for the Gambino family who, by his own account, killed up to 200 people.
The question came up regarding these two films after ComingSoon.net uploaded the poster to the right and even after I posted it earlier today someone immediately asked what happened with the Rourke feature, which was first reported back in September. There are two Afm project packages being shopped on the same subject: Richard Kuklinski, the notorious New Jersey mob hit man. Nu Image has Boardwalk Empire's Michael Shannon to play Kuklinski and Benicio Del Toro and (maybe) James Franco attached to The Iceman, a film that will be directed by Ariel Vromen that is eyeing a production start next summer. Natural Selection CEO Matty Beckerman comes to Afm with a rival project, on which he said he has just closed a deal for life rights of Kuklinski's wife, Barbara, and Pat Kane, the cop who brought Kuklinski to justice. The project, based on the Philip Carlo book The Ice Man: Confessions Of A Mafia Contract Killer, is being scripted by American History X's David McKenna and has Mickey Rourke attached to play Kuklinski. Beckerman is producing and said his Natural Selection will fully fund a movie that will start production in the spring.

Mickey Rourke and his BAFTA awardDeadline reports Mickey Rourke will star in an adaptation of Philip Carlo's book The Ice Man: Confessions of a Mafia Contract Killer, which tells the true story of Richard "The Ice Man" Kuklinski who for over 40 years led a double life as a notorious professional assassin and a loving husband and father in suburban New Jersey. David McKenna (American History X, Blow) is writing the screenplay.
This certainly sounds like the type of story that is perfect for Rourke's signature blend of sensitivity and toughness, and producer Matty Beckerman calls it "a role Mickey Rourke was born to play."
The Hollywood Reporter has the news that Matthew McConaughey and Emile Hirsch have signed on to star in the black comedy Killer Joe for director William Friedkin (The Exorcist, The French Connection). The script, by Pulitzer Prize- and Tony Award-winning writer Tracy Letts, centers on...

Hot off the heels of the premiere of Mitch Glazer's "Passion Play", actor Mickey Rourke signed up for the lead role of "Ice Man: Confessions of a Mafia Contract Killer". You want to talk about a film that's right up an actor's alley, this is it. The story is currently being written by David McKenna off the novel by Philip Carlo. The film is based off the true story of Richard "The Ice Man" Kuklinski who lead a shady double life between his simple family life in New Jersey and his job as an assassin for about forty-three years. Matty Beckerman is producing under Natural Selection and the production still has yet to acquire a director. With Rourke on board, then it'll be a lot easier for them to snatch one.Looks like I'm not the only one who thinks this is a nice fit for Rourke, since Beckerman's...

They already describe this role as “a role Mickey Rourke was born to play.” So there you go!
Mickey Rourke will star in the upcoming movie Ice Man: Confessions of a Mafia Contract Killer, based on the book by Philip Carlo.
Carlo’s book was released in 2006, was a New York Times bestseller, and it follows:
“…the true story of Richard “The Ice Man” Kuklinski who for over 40 years led a completely secretive double life as both a notorious professional assassin and a doting husband and father in suburban New Jersey.
Kuklinski was a favorite among all the seven East Coast crime families due to his cold-hearted intensity. At one point, John Gotti hired him to torture and kill his neighbor. By his own estimate, Kuklinski murdered over two hundred men, taking enormous pride in his variety and ferocity of technique.
Behind Kuklinski’s trail of murder was a traditional,...

One might call Mickey Rourke’s next movie, Rourke: The Professional, but unfortunately that would be copying Luc Besson’s title for the amazing Leon film starring Jean Reno. Now that I think about it – screw that title because the name of his newest film is even better, its called The Ice Man, a true story about a mafia contract killer.
Earlier today Matty Beckerman, CEO of Natural Selection, announced at Tiff that Rourke has been cast to play mafia contract killer Richard “The Ice Man” Kuklinski. This is happening during the time in which buyers have been shopping around and deciding whether or not they should purchase Rourke’s latest film, Passion Play.

Mikey Rourke has landed another great badass movie role! He will star in a movie based on the true story of Richard “The Ice Man” Kuklinski, called The Ice Man: Confessions of a Mafia Contract Killer, Rourke will take on the role of The Ice Man.
The movie will be adapted from the 2006 book written by Philip Carlo. It tells the true story of a man who admitted to killing over 250 people while working for crime families in Newark, NJ and New York City.
This seems like a role that Rourke is perfect for. Producer Matty Beckerman agrees saying,
This is a role Mickey Rourke was born to play and, as a huge fan of David McKenna’s work, I am thrilled to have him on board.
This is the kind of role that could win Rourke an Oscar. What do you all think about Rourke taking on the role of this mad man?...

Natural Selection CEO Matty Beckerman announced at the Toronto Film Festival that his company will fully finance and produce a feature film based on the life of hitman Richard "The Ice Man" Kuklinski and has attached Mickey Rourke (Iron Man 2, The Wrestler) to star. David McKenna (American History X, Blow) has been hired to adapt Philip Carlo's "The Ice Man: Confessions of a Mafia Contract Killer." Kuklinksi was a favorite among all the seven East Coast crime families due to his cold-hearted intensity. At one point, John Gotti hired him to torture and kill his neighbor. By his own estimate, Kuklinski murdered over two hundred men, taking enormous pride in his variety and ferocity of technique. But behind Kuklinski's trail of murder was a traditional, loving, Catholic family. A married father of three, Kuklinski was always regarded as being especially kind to children; he threw summer block parties in his New Jersey neighborhood,...

After his new film Passion Play opened to overwhelmingly negative response at the Toronto International Film Festival, Mickey Rourke has made what I think is a big move to star in the true story Ice Man: Confessions of a Mafia Contract Killer. The “Ice Man” of the title is Richard Kuklinski. The film will follow the 40 years of Kuklinski’s life during which he doubled as a professional assassin and a husband and father in suburban New Jersey. [The Hollywood Reporter]
I say this is a “big move” because the role will obviously require Rourke to tap into his method qualities. Consisting of two different personalities and spanning 40 years, this will surely be a transformative attempt from the Oscar-nominated actor. In The Expendables, Rourke showed how good he could be even with meaningless material, so the potential for this performance is through the roof as far as I’m concerned.

Mickey Rourke is no stranger to playing a bad ass killer. In fact, it's kind of his bread and butter. So it makes sense that the Oscar nominee been cast as Richard "The Ice Man" Kuklinski in The Ice Man: Confessions of a Mafia Contract Killer, an adaptation of a book by Philip Carlo. Hit the jump for more details on the project. According to Variety, the film will be financed by producer Matty Beckerman's Natural Selection company with David McKenna (American History X, Blow) writing the script. Kuklinski was an assassin for the New Jersey mafia for 40 years while also maintaining a life as a father and husband. Sounds like The Sopranos with a silencer. Toronto: As buyers ponder Mickey Rourke's Toronto Film Festival submission Passion Play, the Mick has pacted to play a Mafia contract killer in The Ice Man. How this squares with the likelihood he next stars as Sonny Barger in the Tony Scott-directed Hell's Angels pic for Fox opposite Shia La Beouf, I'm not sure. Here's a quick announcement on the deal. Toronto, Canada (September 12, 2010) – Natural Selection CEO Matty Beckerman announced today out of Toronto -- where he is attending the Toronto International Film Festival -- a deal for the company to fully finance and produce a feature adaptation of the Philip Carlo tome The Ice Man: Confessions Of A Mafia Contract Killer and have attached Mickey Rourke to star. Three new clips for the Paul Scheuring directed remake of Das Experiment (review), called simply The Experiment, have come our way, and things are looking appropriately uncomfortable for our lab rats!
From the Press Release
"Academy Award® winners Adrien Brody (star of Predators; Winner of Best Actor, The Pianist, 2002) and Forest Whitaker (Best Actor, The Last King of Scotland, 2006) star in the adrenaline-charged drama The Experiment, debuting on Blu-ray Disc™ and DVD September 21st from Sony Pictures Home Entertainment. The shocking psychological thriller unfolds when 24 men are chosen to participate in the roles of guards and prisoners in a study designed to evaluate the affects of power and control. Values are tested and lines are crossed when seemingly normal participants are pushed to the breaking point as the experiment spirals out of control. Hospitals, man. Who doesn't hate them? They're like a beacon of misery always reminding you that sooner or later you're going to end up in one for one reason or another. As the new thriller Isolation is going to try and prove -- they can also be very scary!
Variety reports that Matty Beckerman's finance and production shingle Natural Selection has set helmer Stephen T. Kay ("The Shield," "Friday Night Lights") to direct horror film Isolation.
The flick, which began lensing January 25th, stars Eva Amurri (pictured right) and David Harbour (Revolutionary Road). Amurri plays a medical student who awakens in a hospital isolation room, having been exposed to an unknown disease, desperately ill and with no recollection of how she got there.
Natural Selection is fully financing the pic and producing with David Greathouse, Principal Entertainment's Danny Sherman and Josh Kesselman, as well as John Baca.
Chris Billett has penned the screenplay.

Are you ready for a new spin on the "zombie" genre? After 28 Days Later everyone has tried, most have failed, but can the director of "The Shield" and Boogeyman find a way to make it work? I'd bet against him after seeing Boogeyman but I'll give him the benefit of the doubt (this once).
