The end of the year in cinema brings about a slew of compilation videos, with Oscar contenders, blockbusters, and more finding themselves included in the mix. With all of the incredible cinematic content that came out this year, it can remain a difficult task to look back and remember everything that has come and gone.
Clark Zhu‘s video starts with a bang, diving into the action films of 2017 including “Thor: Ragnarok,” “Atomic Blonde,” and “The Foreigner.” Yep, it’s certainly a healthy mix of pictures.

Gambling, backstabbing, accidental brilliance, industrial sabotage, and suspicious disappearances all had a role in the birth of film. This is a look at the Victorian-era men who played vital roles in making movies possible.
The transition of film from still photography to the burgeoning industry that it is today did not happen overnight. Moving pictures began as a novelty act. In the mid 19th century, photographers would place successive metal film prints into spinning disks to create pictures that “moved”. Later, it was a wager by railroad tycoon Leland Stanford that gave moving pictures their first practical application. In 1878, he wanted to see if a horse ever had all of its legs off the ground when it ran, and a set-up of cameras in quick succession by Eadweard Muybridge gave him the answer of “yes”. Muybridge would develop this idea further, into a spinning lantern called the Zoopraxiscope to study the movement of animals.

A new video traces the development of contemporary film’s foremost artist.
There’s no question that David Lynch values imagery more than narrative. He’s a master of the open-ended aesthetic who prefers to present his audience with films that initiate speculation rather than drive home absolute truths. He’s a visual artist who paints in film, and storytelling — at least in a conventional, plot-driven sense — has always come second to the unspoken possibilities of the worlds and peoples he creates visually. It is this hierarchy that makes his films so delightfully abstract and captivatingly confounding.
But Lynch’s strengths don’t just lie in inventing absurd, unexpected, and often difficult imagery, rather also in how he manipulates and recreates existing imagery to fit his particular vision and suit his bizarre purposes, as evidenced in the following video from Andreas Halskov called “Moving Pictures: Visual References and Artistry in the Films of David Lynch.”

“It’s the most wonderful time/Of the year…” – Andy Williams
Well, yes and no. There is, after all, still about a week and a half to go before we can put the long national, annual nightmare of the tax season behind us. But it’s also film festival season, which for me specifically means the onset of the 2017 TCM Classic Film Festival, the eighth iteration of what has become a perennial moviegoing event. More and more people flock to Hollywood Boulevard each year from all reaches of the country, and from other countries, to revel in the history of Hollywood and international filmmaking, celebrate their favorite stars (including, this year, beloved TCM host Robert Osborne, who died earlier this year and whose presence has been missed at the festival for the past two sessions) and enjoy a long-weekend-sized bout of nostalgia for the movie culture being referred to when...

2007s' Hot Rod arrives at its tenth birthday - and there's plenty here to celebrate...
Stuntman extraordinaire Rod Kimble is about to face the challenge of his life. If he can jump fifteen buses on his motorbike – that’s one more than Evel Knievel; you can check, online – and raise the $50,000 required for his stepdad Frank’s life-saving surgery, he’ll be acclaimed as a hero. Far more importantly, he’ll also be able to kick Frank’s ass. Rod’s been mocked and bullied by his stepdad for a long time. This is his chance to prove himself as a man, gain Frank’s respect, and win the heart of his next-door neighbour, Denise. There’s only one problem: Rod’s never actually managed to perform a stunt successfully. Ancestors, protect him…

Rush is a band that has never taken itself seriously. In the 33 years I have followed The Boys, I have come to regard them as musicians who have no trouble making fun of themselves and this is an aspect of their personalities that endears them to so many of us. The band’s use of the Three Stooges theme to open many of their concerts since the 1980’s and their amusing videos that open and close their later tours are proof that they don’t take themselves seriously.
In keeping in the spirit of such silliness, David Calcano’s 2015 book Rushtoons by Fantoons Vol. 2112 is a tongue-in-cheek tribute to our favorite band by some world-class artists who have created some beautiful cartoons that ape and good-naturedly poke fun at Rush’s famous album covers, making visual puns and humorous references to imagery that is as synonymous...

National Geographic is a 128-year-old brand, but on social media, it is young at heart. The nature and science publication continues to excel on platforms like Instagram and Snapchat, and at its 2016 NewFronts presentation, it announced new endeavors for those frontiers and many others. Among other initiatives, it is planning MoviNG Pictures, its first video series for its popular Instagram feed.
MoviNG Pictures will make use of Nat Geo’s network of talented photographers, who have already helped the publication’s Instagram hub become the social media network’s most-followed non-celebrity account. Beginning in August, the feed’s 49.3 million fans will be able to follow Nat Geo’s photographers as they go out on their respective assignments. The show’s launch will be timed to coincide with the 100th anniversary of the National Park Service.
Beyond Instagram, Nat Geo has plenty more programming it plans to unveil in the coming months.

The 6th Annual TCM Classic Film Fest starts today in Hollywood, kicking off 4 days of fan-friendly classic film viewing. Though Turner Classic Movies's festival is only six years old, the TV channel works to make each year bigger and broader than the year before it. This year, TCM will honor legendary director Francis Ford Coppola with a handprint ceremony, and call on the likes of Angela Lansbury, Faye Dunaway, Rita Moreno, and Anna Karina to introduce its decades-and-countries-spanning festival lineup. If you thought "Classic Movies" meant films shot in La from 1930-1950, TCM has some mind-altering revelations for you!
This year's theme is Moving Pictures; movies that not only move us to tears (It's A Wonderful Life and A Tree Grows in Brooklyn), but also laughter (Dead Men Don't Wear Plaid), trepidation (Band of Outsiders), spiritualism (The Passion of Joan of Arc), and introspection (Network,...

Executives today announced the 15 finallists in the Micro-Budget Production Program for 2015-2016 representing all regions of the country.
Telefilm Canada brass also said at a press conference at Toronto’s Tiff Bell Lightbox that the Talent Fund will subsidise the Program, while Technicolor is offering free digital distribution encoding services to finallists who want it.
This is the third annual round of projects in the Micro-Budget Production Program, which supports emerging filmmakers seeking to produce their first feature-length films.
The scheme places emphasis on the use of digital platforms and developing their potential for distribution and audience engagement. Budgets for these projects must not exceed $250,000.

What measure of our surrounding universe is processed through our senses into reality? How can we ever be sure our own understanding of the cosmos isn't biased by a less than optimal apparatus? How would you convey that notion into a language based on those faulty processes? The Lovecraftian "unspeakable" is a child's drawing; the malformed attempt of transforming a human face into a circle with two squiggly eyes. Moving pictures on the other hand, can push the boundaries a little bit further than the written word and in this particular case, using subtraction of a given pillar in our sensory toolbox. But I may be ahead of myself here, so let's start properly.

Los Angeles - On Thursday, Jill Soloway had some strong and hilarious advice for the outgoing and incoming students of the AFI Conservatory Directing Workshop for Women. "Rub your shame all over your script." "Tear those motherf*ckers down, like vile lady-dogs." "If you can't cry, you're a liability." "Shoot from your pussy." The Emmy-nominated, Golden Globe-winning film/TV director aimed her keynote address to the 20 or so Dww directors showcasing their short films at the Directors Guild of America HQ. There's been a recent spike of voices advocating for more women directors and women's stories in Hollywood especially on the heels of this past Oscars season; the late April release of a damning USC/Sundance study on the employ of female directors; and the Aclu's targeting of gender discrimination announced this week. Certainly, Soloway noticed. "It's an amazing time for women," the "Transparent" creator/producer/director said in her opening remarks,...

Neil Patrick Harris opened the 87th Academy Awards ceremony with a song called “Moving Pictures,” featuring lyrics that apply not only to film, but lyrics that can be adapted to describe television and every other medium of fictional storytelling:
“Moving pictures: millions of pixels on screens. They may not be real life, but they’ll show you what life really means. More than any one image, more than any one star–truly, moving pictures shape who we are.“
The sentiment is another one of many different sayings and quotes that suggest that fiction can paradoxically be more “real” than real life. The logic, of course, is that worlds and characters created from the imagination have the capacity to penetrate and stir us by presenting certain truths about ourselves that day-to-day life manages to obscure. Whether that’s because of monotony or routine or something else will probably depend on the person,...

Perhaps the most memorable part of this year's Academy Awards ceremony (see a full list of the winners here) came right up front with a fantastic (and hilarious) opening song-and-dance number from host Neil Patrick Harris, with assistance from Anna Kendrick and Jack Black. In case you missed it, watch below. What some may not know is that Frozen songwriters Robert Lopez and Kristen Anderson-Lopez wrote the numbers, titled "Moving Pictures," and they shared the tongue-twisty lyrics -- which paid tribute to the movies while also poking fun at old and new Hollywood cliches -- with Playbill. Check 'em out below. Currently the Lopez duo is reportedly working hard on both the Frozen Broadway musical and sequel, though a number like this reminds us that the...

Well, this year's Oscars was certainly full of surprises and one of the biggest was just how uneven Neil Patrick Harris's gig as emcee went. At first it seemed like the actor, who starred in last year's Oscar-nominated box office smash "Gone Girl," would translate his boisterous, Broadway-honed song-and-dance routine into one of the more memorable hosting gigs of recent memory (in a good way). But the high highs also complemented by some incredibly low lows (like the overlong gag about his predictions, which culminated in a reveal that had us asking, Oh he likes magic right?) Still, Nph did more bad than good last night - and here are our seven favorite moments from the show.
1. Acknowledging the Race Discrepancy Right Away
Despite a number of films that tackled racially diverse issues (and just as many ace performances by nonwhite actors), this year's Oscars was one of the...

"Stay weird. Stay different." That was the advice of Best Adapted Screenplay winner Graham Moore ("The Imitation Game") to kids out there who might one day follow in his footsteps, but it also could have been the motto for the 87th annual Academy Awards ceremony on Sunday night. The weirdness of the Neil Patrick Harris-hosted Oscars wasn't in the results -- for the record, I went 18 for 24 in my predictions, which is more a testimony to how closely the voting followed conventional wisdom than it is to my crystal-ball skills -- but in the presentation. The show was full of Wtf? moments, some wonderful, some cringeworthy, some merely bizarre, and all of them memorable. Here are some of the weird and different Oscar moments that viewers won't soon forget.

"That whole thing? Completely improvised." And that's how you open your first Oscars, people! Hosting the big award show for the very first time, Neil Patrick Harris went all out when he took the stage at the Kodak Theater on Sunday night. And, of course, the Gone Girl star opened with a musical number! The song "Moving Pictures," was written by Oscar-winning Frozen duo Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez, and found Harris marveling in "the glamour, the glitter" (and the magic, complete with a trick performed by the host!) of the big night. The opening performance contained so many great moments, but seven really stood out... 1. Anna Kendrick's...

One can't imagine how nervous Neil Patrick Harris must have been backstage in the moments before the official start of this year's Academy Award ceremony, but all those jitters obviously left the stage once the show began. How do we know? Because his opening number, titled "Moving Pictures," is absolutely fantastic. Check it out below! As seen above, Neil Patrick Harris certainly hasn't lost his singing chops. The host's opening number, brought to us by Time, paid tribute to the long history of movies through a lyric-driven tune paired up with a montage of clips from classic films - like the 1939 classic The Wizard of Oz, the feel-good Kevin Costner-led Field of Dreams, and everybody's favorite Patrick Swayze pic Ghost (okay, maybe our second favorite). They even gave a shout out to some of our bigger effects driven movies like Star Wars and The Avengers, which was pretty cool.

Tonight is Hollywood’s most anticipated night. When the dreams of a handful come true and for the rest, “It was an honor just to be nominated.” Here’s a rundown of the night’s most buzzworthy events and a list of winners that I’ll update as the night goes on. Neal Patrick Harris opened the show with a musical number “Moving Pictures” that was an homage to films that inspire us, and featuring Neal inserted into famous films like Risky Business and Star Wars. Anna Kendrick and Jack Black also lent a hand (and their voices). Note: The order of the below list … Continue reading →

Neil Patrick Harris kicked off the 87th Academy Awards with a musical tribute to cinema on Sunday (February 22).
The Tony Award winner made his debut as Oscars host by singing 'Moving Pictures', which was penned for the occasion by Frozen's Robert Lopez and Kristen Anderson-Lopez.

Emerging from a rising platform in the middle of the Dolby Theatre stage, Harris began with a joke referencing Selma's controversial snub in the Best Actor and Best Director categories.
"Tonight we honour Hollywood's best and whitest - sorry, brightest," Harris quipped.
The comment immediately led into a humourous musical tribute to the history of cinema, with nods to iconic figures Marilyn Monroe, Brigitte Bardot, Arnold Schwarzenegger and the Oscar-winning duo Ben Affleck and Matt Damon.

Not since 1994 has anyone opened the Oscar ceremony with an Oprah Winfrey joke. It didn’t go well then, when David Letterman attempted it. Ditto tonight when Neil Patrick Harris bravely gave it another go. Fortunately, Harris' Oprah gag came after an opening song and dance number, Moving Pictures, that was greeted with wild applause. “That whole thing was improvised,” Nph said as the number ended. “Congratulations to all of the nominees, in particular the eight…...

This isn't the line-up for an upcoming pop concert, but rather for Sunday's Academy Awards.
"We want to entertain," said Neil Meron, producing his third consecutive Oscar ceremony with Craig Zadan. "And there's no better entertainment than to do it with music."
Host Neil Patrick Harris will perform an original song by the Oscar-winning writers behind "Let It Go," the producers said. Called "Moving Pictures," the musical number will set a "subliminal theme" for the evening, Meron said.
"It really is celebratory about movies and yet it's kind of cheeky in a way," he said. "But yet it has a beautiful musical motif which... we integrate throughout the show as kind of a call-back theme."
Added Zadan: "We didn't want to do a musical number that could have been on the Tonys, or anywhere else for that matter.
