Nurse Jackie is rearing to return following its original run at Showtime from 2009 to 2015, and fans can’t get enough of the good news. Here’s everything we know so far about the Prime Video revival.
Nurse Jackie Spoilers – Plot And Returning Characters Revealed For the ‘Nurse Jackie’ Revival
A nurse’s shift is never done. Almost a decade after the original series concluded its seven season run, Edie Falco has signed on to reprise her role in a ‘Nurse Jackie’ sequel series.
Variety reported that the project, which is being produced by Lionsgate and currently in development at Amazon MGM Studio, is set for a streaming release at Prime Video.
The series will continue to follow Falco’s character, an emergency room nurse who struggles with addiction to drugs. Last we saw her, she had snorted more heroin than her body could carry and ended up passing out at the hospital.

A Nurse Jackie sequel series, originally set at Showtime, is now in development at Amazon MGM Studios, with Edie Falco set to star, Deadline has confirmed.
As we previously reported in 2023, the potential sequel series from Lionsgate Television, producer of the original series, was in development at Showtime. Showtime‘s linear network, which launched more than four decades ago during the early days of cable, was officially rebranded and relaunched in a package with Paramount+ in January.
Per the logline: “10 years after we left Jackie Peyton (Falco) clinging to life in the series finale, we find her back on her feet in spite of having lost her nursing license. The continuation of her story will find her facing new dilemmas in trying to be good in a world where being bad is often not only easier, but a lot more fun.”

Nearly a month after Jonathan Glazer’s Oscars speech reverberated across Hollywood and caused a wave of controversy, 455 Jewish creatives (and counting) have signed a letter in a show of support.
“We were alarmed to see some of our colleagues in the industry mischaracterize and denounce his remarks. Their attacks on Glazer are a dangerous distraction from Israel’s escalating military campaign which has already killed over 32,000 Palestinians in Gaza and brought hundreds of thousands to the brink of starvation,” reads the letter, published amid the continued conflict in the Middle East. “We grieve for all those who have been killed in Palestine and Israel over too many decades, including the 1200 Israelis killed in the October 7 Hamas attacks and the 253 hostages taken.”
The letter is signed by a mix of actors, writers, producers, filmmakers and other creatives. Among those backing Glazer are Joker star Joaquin Phoenix; Killer Films vet Pamela Koffler...

Sequels, reboots, and revivals, oh my. Deadline has reported that Showtime is developing sequel series to Nurse Jackie and Weeds, which were once crown jewels of the network.
The sequels to Nurse Jackie and Weeds are still in the early stages of development, but Deadline hears that the prospective leads of each original series, Edie Falco and Mary-Louise Parker, are attached to star and executive produce the follow-ups. The original Weeds series starred Parker as a widowed mother who starts selling marijuana to support her family following the death of her husband. Nurse Jackie featured Falco as a pill-popping ER nurse and mother.
The Weeds sequel series would be written and executive produced by Christian Torpe, with the new story featuring Mary-Louise Parker’s character in Copenhagen. As for the Nurse Jackie sequel, it would be written and executive produced by Abe Sylvia and Liz Flahive, who worked on the original.

Showtime‘s new direction of spinoffs and revivals is underway as a Nurse Jackie and Weeds sequel is now in the works from Lionsgate Television. According to network reps, both series are in early development, with the original leads, Edie Falco and Mary-Louise Parker, set to reprise their starring roles with executive producer credits. Although the projects are still being negotiated, Nurse Jackie will be written and executive produced by Abe Sylvia and Liz Flahive, respectively, reenlisted from the original show. Meanwhile, Weeds will be written and executive produced by Christian Torpe, creator of the popular Danish series Rita, featuring the main character Nancy (Parker) in Copenhagen. A continuation of Weeds has been in the works for years, with a follow-up series previously announced in 2019 by writer Victoria Morrow. It was set to pick up with the Botwin family ten years after the events of the original series in an era of marijuana legalization.

"Glow" star Betty Gilpin has traded in her synthetic wrestling bodysuits for a nun's habit in her new show "Mrs. Davis," but she's not against getting back into the ring. "Oh god, I would of course be down for a reboot," she tells Popsugar.
The star played Debbie "Liberty Belle" Eagan in the Netflix show, which follows the trials and tribulations of a (very real) woman's professional wrestling circuit called Gorgeous Ladies of Wrestling (Glow) in the 1980s. The series premiered in 2017 and ran for three seasons. The show was renewed for a fourth season in 2019 but the Covid-19 pandemic led to "Glow"'s ultimate cancellation. Star Alison Brie called it "the great heartbreak of my career" in an interview with Decider.

Bill Kinder, the subject of the Matthew McConaughey film “Dallas Sting” that was axed after an investigation uncovered allegations of misconduct, has denied the accusations, saying they were fabricated.
The Texan coach Kinder, 83, on Friday spoke with The Daily Mail and said that an anonymous letter was sent to the film’s studio, Skydance, accusing him of 40 years ago having “touched someone outside their clothes and referring to the female athletes he coached by inappropriate nicknames.” Kinder, in his interview with The Daily Mail, denied any misconduct and further said he was shocked at the news from earlier this week that the film will not move forward.
Kinder said he was contacted by investigators hired by Skydance after the letter was received and that he and the other subjects of the film, now all adult women, had informed him there was “nothing there” in terms of the investigations. He added...

Film projects fall apart all the time in Hollywood, but it's rare for a movie to get within a month or so of production and abruptly get canned.
This, however, is what happened to "Dallas Sting," which was to be an uplifting account of the first U.S. soccer team, male or female, to win an international tournament. Matthew McConaughey and Kaitlyn Dever were set to star in the film, and "The Falcon and the Winter Soldier" director Kari Skogland was working from a screenplay by the "Glow" writing duo of Liz Flahive and Carly Mensch. On paper, this sounded like a terrifically entertaining sports flick. So why did it get shut down six weeks prior to the start of principal photography?

Matthew McConaughey’s latest project, the football film Dallas Sting, has been scrapped just six weeks ahead of its planned production start date.
The film, which was due to be directed by The Falcon and the Winter Soldier’s Kari Skogland, was going to tell the true story of a 1984 Dallas girls football team who travelled to China and defeated some of the best teams in the world.
McConaughey was set to portray coach Bill Kinder, while Booksmart’s Kaitlyn Dever had been cast to play his daughter.
Kinder was a Texan with no prior coaching experience who led the team to victories over Australia, Japan, China, and eventually Italy.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, sources have said that production company Skydance received troubling allegations regarding aspects of the true story on which the film’s plot was based.
A subsequent investigation into the story led Skydance and the producers to withdraw the film.

Controversy surrounding upcoming film “Dallas Sting” has officially led to Skydance shelving the feature.
Inspired by the 1984 true story of a Dallas girls soccer team traveling to China to became world champions, “Dallas Sting” was set to star Matthew McConaughey as coach Bill Kinder and Emmy nominee Kaitlyn Dever as his daughter. Actual soccer players were cast as the team.
Kari Skogland (“The Falcon and the Winter Soldier”) was helming the feature from a script by “Glow” creators Liz Flahive and Carly Mensch; “Dallas Sting” was produced by Skydance and Berlanti Schechter Productions.
The Hollywood Reporter first reported that “disturbing allegations surrounding aspects of the true story” has now led to the film being canceled six weeks ahead of production. “That investigation led Skydance and the producers to pull the plug,” per THR sources.

Skydance was just six weeks away from kicking off production on Dallas Sting, a movie starring Matthew McConaughey that revolved around a Dallas women’s soccer team who travelled to China and defeated some of the best women’s teams in the world. The WGA East’s second Showrunner Academy gets underway today, with the 31-member class taking part in a program designed to support television writer-producers, upper-level writers and new show creators in honing the skills necessary to become successful showrunners and TV industry leaders.
The Academy, which provides instruction from current showrunners and other industry professionals on a wide range of topics, is led by Diana Son and Frank Pugliese.
“Being a showrunner is so much more than being the creative voice of the show,” Son said in a statement. “It’s also managing a multimillion-dollar endeavor with over 100 employees. We’re bringing in accomplished and experienced showrunners who’re willing to share the breadth of their experience – the good, bad and the ugly – so new showrunners can have a head start on figuring out what kind of showrunner they’re going to be.

The creative coalition — which currently numbers 1,425 showrunners/creators and directors — first made itself known with a letter sent to studios July 28 demanding written policies to protect production staffers’ abortion access in states where abortion has been declared illegal after the Supreme Court’s Dobbs v. Jackson ruling June 24. In addition to that ongoing exchange with the studios, the creatives raised a 2.5 million seed fund for Nnaf, opening it up to the public Aug. 15 with a...

If you cast Alison Brie in a TV show, odds are good that it’s going to become a cult hit. The only downside is that it will probably be prematurely cancelled as well.
The actress has spent the past few weeks fanning rumors about a potential “Community” movie, but that isn’t the only cancelled series she’s been forced to mourn. Her first full-fledged leading role on TV came on “Glow,” Netflix’s 1980s women’s wrestling dramedy that was renewed for a fourth and final season in 2019 before being abruptly cancelled in 2020. But the show’s fan base continues to grow, to the point where “Glow” finally appears to be given the respect that critics always had for it. In a new interview with Decider, Brie spoke about her love for Liz Flahive and Carly Mensch’s show and revealed that she still isn’t over the pain of its abrupt cancellation.

Exclusive: Matthew McConaughey is set to star in Dallas Sting, the fact-based story of how a group of Dallas high school girls headed to China in 1984 as the ultimate underdog and beat some of the best women’s teams from China, Australia and Italy. The film was developed by Skydance and Berlanti Schechter Productions. Apple, which has an overall deal with Skydance, has first bite at the film and I expect a deal to happen before production begins this fall in New Orleans.
Skydance’s David Ellison, Dana Goldberg and Don Granger are producing with Greg Berlanti, Sarah Schechter and Robbie Rogers. Those producers won a movie auction to acquire an unpublished article by Flinder Boyd.

Two years after the shocking cancellation of “Glow,” showrunners Liz Flahive and Carly Mensch have returned for another show about the struggles women face every day — “Roar.” The Apple TV+ anthology series tells a new story with each episode, centering on a woman or girl as she deals with societal expectations, often with a dark twist of magical realism. The stories of “Roar” come from Cecelia Ahern‘s short story collection of the same name, to which both Flahive and Mensch found themselves drawn. “The thing that really drew us in were just how sticky the ideas and images were,” says Flahive in an exclusive new interview for Gold Derby. Watch the video chat above.

Liz Flahive's and Carly Mensch's anthology series "Roar" debuted on Apple TV+ on April 15, 2022. Based on a collection of short stories by Cecelia Ahern, each episode features a different cast and director telling a story of a woman's experiences. In an early press release, "Roar" was said to tell "darkly comic feminist fables."
The second episode, titled "The Woman Who Ate Photographs," stars Nicole Kidman as a woman named Robin who literally consumes pictures. Few television shows cycle through actors faster than the “Law and Order” franchise, and many a great thespian has launched their career by appearing as a criminal-of-the-week on the NBC series.
Betty Gilpin was no stranger to the show in her early years, appearing on both the flagship “Law and Order” show and many of its spinoffs. Appearing on “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon” this week, the “Glow” star opened up about the multitude of roles she played on “Law and Order,” including “a pedophile with vocal fry” and “a lesbian with acne.” But her most memorable experience on the show happened during what should have been her easiest role: playing a corpse.
“I was found naked in an oil drum — Vincent D’Onofrio found my naked, dead body,” Gilpin said, before adding that she was almost abandoned in a body bag. “I just had to sort of be in there.

[Editor’s Note: The following interview contains light spoilers for “Roar” Season 1. All eight episodes are available now on Apple TV+.]
Fables, by definition, provide a moral lesson, but that doesn’t mean the characters within each fanciful, fictitious story have to recognize the message themselves. A protagonist’s poor choices may lead to comeuppance, or their awakening may arrive too late. Their fate is meant to inform and instruct the reader, rather than simply make them feel safe and secure.
In other words, fables aren’t fairy tales, and “Roar” recognizes the difference. The eight-episode Apple TV+ series is adapted from Cecelia Ahern’s 2018 collection of shorts. A number of episodes — all fables — are steeped in relatable misfortune. The woman who solved her own murder doesn’t get her life back. The woman who disappeared doesn’t find a magic patch for racist blind spots. But in the hands of “Glow” creators Liz Flahive and Carly Mensch, “Roar” imbues...

While once a male-dominated medium, TV is brimming with female-driven programming in 2022.
Women are getting the royal treatment with psychological perspectives not often available, especially with additional women behind the camera.
Airing on Apple TV+, Roar is a new anthology series about women's empowerment from Liz Flahive and Carly Mensch, who have previously showcased the female mind on shows like Nurse Jackie and the gone-too-soon Glow.
Given their previous work, basing a series on Cecelia Ahern's book of short stories with the same title makes perfect sense, and some moving episodes really make you think.
The stories study many issues women face today, including fear, shame, and guilt, with a literal, somewhat whimsical bent.
Whether boldly told or with a lighter approach, each chapter finds a woman sharing her empowerment or experience with womanhood.
Liz Flahive joined us on press day to share her thoughts on bringing these stories to the screen.

Roar is a collection of darkly comic, female-centered fables that share some spine-chilling DNA with The Twilight Zone and Black Mirror. In each of the eight standalone episodes, adapted by Carly Mensch and Liz Flahive (Glow) from Cecelia Ahern’s short story collection, a woman finds herself in a very weird situation. Take, for instance, Becky the ghost of a bizarrely slain young woman who guides law enforcement to clues in “The Woman Who Solved Her Own Murder.” “The most fun part of playing this character was delving into the different tactics she’s trying to use to get attention from these male detectives. She’s trying to use the ones she did in life,” Brie says. But flirting doesn’t work when you’re dead – and invisible. So she ends up “channeling her anger” to both hilarious and heartbreaking results. The most bizarre tale is “The Woman Who Was Fed By a Duck,...

The worst part of “Roar” is also its most consistent. While every episode of Apple’s new anthology show tackles an entirely different story with a different cast to match, they each open with a neon graphic of a woman’s mouth screaming out of a blooming flower. With this image, “Roar” underlines its logline as a feminist scream of a series that, as based on Ceceila Ahern’s book of short stories, explores “what it means to be a woman today.” Watching its trailer, which leans heavily on wackier moments like Nicole Kidman shoving photographs down her throat, you’d be excused for assuming it’s an exaggerated comedy of girlboss errors. Watching the actual show, though, makes for a bit of a more scattered experience.
From Liz Flahive and Carly Mensch, “Roar” tells eight stories of eight women whose dissatisfaction with their situations — whether rooted in shame, guilt,...

In our modern age, where audiences demand a never-ending stream of their preferred story, episodic anthology series can be a tough sell. People don’t want to watch one episode of something, only to start over 30 minutes later with a new set of characters in a new setting with new stakes — or, depending on your faith in humanity, networks don’t want to risk losing subscribers by providing a quick, clean ending, rather than lock them in for 11 hours. After all, when you’re beginning anew every episode, the odds that they’ll all be of equal interest, let alone quality, drop off.
But that hasn’t stopped great episodic series from being produced. “Room 104” stretched its horror conceit to exciting extremes. “High Maintenance” transported us to various New York venues with compassionate character portraits. “Little America” found distinctly charming avenues into American immigrants’ lives. Some people watch “Black Mirror.
