From an idea, to the script, to filming and finally making its way to the big screen, every movie starts with a great story. The cinematic stories of 2015 inundated audiences with inspiring tales of compassion, happiness, courage and love while being spread over the various genres.
Moviegoers saw the rise of Nwa, true stories of an ongoing cover-up and the economic catastrophe whose effects are still being felt today, journeys of harsh survival but also ones of inspirational hope – both here on earth and on distant worlds – and a re-imaging of the beauty and chaos of the post-apocalyptic world that is Mad Max. Even the new story about Rocky Balboa proved to be a fascinating one as we watched the torch being passed to a new generation. We couldn’t help but feel a whimsy of nostalgia from a visit back to Philadelphia as well as to that Galaxy Far Far Away.

“I can’t drive, I’m a goose.”
Sir Kenneth Branagh’s live action adaptation of Cinderella for Disney Studios may not add anything new to the beloved tale, but with an excellent cast and an elegant sense of style, it made for a magical and quite charming version of the story that all ages could enjoy.
When Melissa Howland reviewed Cinderella here at We Are Movie Geeks, she wrote: “Stunning costumes, sets, and CGI make for an enchanting journey onscreen. Every character had a specific set of colors that they were identified with that allowed them to stand out in their own right. Rather than going with the traditional castle, they built an entire kingdom, which was a bold but rewarding choice” Read all of Melissa’s review Here

Monkey Kingdom is the latest from DisneyNature. It’s a documentary narrated by Tina Fey that follows a newborn monkey and its mother as they struggle to survive within the competitive social hierarchy of the Temple Troop, a dynamic group of monkeys who live in ancient ruins found deep in the storied jungles of South Asia.
When Melissa Howland reviewed Monkey Kingdom at We Are Movie Geeks, she wrote: “Once again, (filmmakers) Linfield, Fothergill and crew capture some of the most spectacular images of the jungle and its’ inhabitants that most humans would never have the opportunity to see. Composer Harry Gregson-Williams brings the ancient ruins and jungles to life with his score. As with the previous Disneynature features, the end credits give audiences a glimpse into what the actual filming was like (monkeys taking selfies, anyone?). Monkey Kingdom is spellbinding.” Read all of Mellissa’s review Here

“Never Have I Ever… spread the rumor that Blaire has an eating disorder.”
When Melissa Howland reviewed Unfriended here at We Are Movie Geeks, she wrote that the film: “…..felt fresh. They didn’t rely on just using jump scares to horrify the audience. Instead, they also used a relatable story theme, and created tension throughout the film. Director Levan Gabriadze did a great job of creating a natural flowing, fun film. The same goes for the cast. A lot was riding on their shoulders since most of their script was improvised. They were in charge, in a way, of how they looked on camera since they really did have a makeshift skype-type of chat screen in front of them, and really moving the script along.” (read all of Melissa’s review Here)

On Saturday Crimson Peak, Warcraft and Krampus were at Legendary Pictures’ Comic-Con panel in Hall H.
Krampus, a darkly festive tale of a yuletide ghoul, reveals an irreverently twisted side to the holiday.
When his dysfunctional family clashes over the holidays, young Max (Emjay Anthony) is disillusioned and turns his back on Christmas. Little does he know, this lack of festive spirit has unleashed the wrath of Krampus: a demonic force of ancient evil intent on punishing non-believers.
All hell breaks loose as beloved holiday icons take on a monstrous life of their own, laying siege to the fractured family’s home and forcing them to fight for each other if they hope to survive.
The horror-comedy also stars Adam Scott, Toni Collette, David Koechner, Allison Tolman, Conchata Ferrell, Stefania Lavie Owen and Krista Stadler.

Mary Sinclair: “I’m sorry, are you on drugs?”
Danny Collins: “Currently or in general?”
In Danny Collins, Al Pacino plays an aging rock star named Danny Collins, a mix of Neil Diamond and Rod Stewart. He’s led a life of drugs, booze, and women but has failed to produce any new music in three decades. He still plays to sold out arenas, performing the same old schlock to the young and old and spends his nights snorting cocaine, drinking anything with alcohol in it, and having sex with his much-younger live-in girlfriend. The story in Danny Collins kicks in when a lost letter to Danny from John Lennon, written decades earlier, belatedly arrives, inspiring Danny to connect with a son (Bobby Canavale) he’s never met.

Disney’s live-action comedy Alexander And The Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day, based on the popular kid’s book by Judith Viorst, got little love when it opened theatrically in October. When Melissa Howland reviewed it here at We Are Movie Geeks, she called it “….a boring, cluttered mess.” (read all of Melissa’s review Here)
Watching Alexander And The Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day on Disney’s new Blu-ray in the less-demanding confines of home, I found it not at all a terrible, horrible, very bad experience. In fact, it was a bit funnier than I expected. 11-year-old Alexander Cooper (Ed Oxenbould) and his family (dad Steve Carell, mom Jennifer Gardner) are put in silly, sitcom-style scenarios, and the PG-style calamities are harmless fun. There are sight gags, pop cultural references, and gross-outs aplenty, but they’re done with a hint of restraint and even some wit.

Delivery Man is an American remake from Disney Studios of a French language film from the same director, Ken Scott. It tells the improbable (but true) tale of affable underachiever David Wozniak (played by Vince Vaughn), whose mundane life is turned upside down when he finds out that he fathered 533 children through sperm donations he made twenty years earlier. In debt to the mob, rejected by his pregnant girlfriend, things couldn’t look worse for David when he is hit with a lawsuit from 142 of the 533 twenty-somethings who want to know the identity of the mysterious donor.
When Melissa Howland reviewed Delivery Man here at We Are Movie Geeks, she wrote: “Delivery Man offers audiences a lot of laughs, and a lot of heart…..this is Vince Vaughn’s best role yet” (read all of Melissa’s review Here).
Since I had just seen the French version, I skipped Delivery Man when it played theatrically.

I know.
I lost.
For those of you that are just tuning in…Wamg’s Melissa Howland (that’s me!) teamed up with Craveonline‘s William “Bibbs” Bibbiani (Also of The B-movie Podcast) to bring you the Oscar Prediction Showdown. In the two part showdown William and I talked a bit about the 86th Annual Academy Awards. Not only that, but we gave our picks for who/what we thought should win in each category, and what would win. Being the rebel that I am, I put a little too much faith in The Wolf Of Wall Street… and was forced to do the Peeps Challenge.
To add to my misery, I did this on my birthday, and had a bit too much tequila the night before. The result… rainbow barfville. Check it out below.
Side Note: I know this seems funny, but I was miserable for the rest of the day.

Well kids, there is a bit of a wager on the line. The person that guesses the least amount of winners will have to do the dreaded Peeps challenge. For those of you unfamiliar with the challenge,...

Emma Thompson and Tom Hanks shine in Disney’s new feature film Saving Mr. Banks, a heartwarming tale about the making of the Mary Poppins film.
When Walt Disney and his daughters discovered the book “Mary Poppins” by P. L. Travers, they fell in love. Disney then made a promise to them, that took him 20 years to keep. He would bring Mary Poppins to life. What he didn’t expect was a stubborn writer with no intention of handing over her beloved nanny. When finally convinced to discuss the film, Disney and his team pull out all the stops to impress Travers enough to sign off on the film. What they didn’t bargain for was uncovering some of her ghosts from the past, or where the story of Mary Poppins actually came from.

On Friday April 15, director/screenwriter James Gunn returned to his hometown of St. Louis to screen his sophomore feature film Super. The above photo is from an interview our own Melissa Howland conducted earlier that day with Gunn. Super played to a packed auditorium at the beautiful Tivoli theatre at 7 Pm that evening. At the film’s conclusion St. Louis Post Dispatch film critic Joe Williams introduced Gunn. After a few opening remarks, Gunn took questions from the audience for close to thirty minutes. He talked about filming in Shreveport, Louisiana during the coldest winter there in recent history. Kudos to Ellen Page for braving the temps while just dressed in her undergarments. Gunn applauded the actors who worked for scale. A couple traveled to the shoot on their own expenses. He revealed that his ex-wife Jenna Fisher was instrumental in getting her TV co-star Rainn Wilson to take the film’s lead role.

The evening was part of Turner Classic Movies ” Road to Hollywood ” tour and co-presented by Charter Communications. This Spring TCM is sending Mankiewicz and Robert Osbourne all across the United States with film classics and their stars. As you can see by the above photo ( and others taken by Melissa Howland ), St. Louis movie lovers flocked to see The Birds and Ms. Hedren,so many that over a hundred people were turned away. Below are some shots of her signing autographs for some lucky fans.
