Greta Gerwig’s “Barbie” movie is currently lavishing in critical praise, an A CinemaScore and the best opening box office of the year, but that won’t save it from the culture wars.
Inspired by the iconic children’s doll, the Warner Bros. family film has become a target for conservative outrage in recent weeks. That includes pundit Ben Shapiro, who took the discourse to theatrical new heights by burning Barbie dolls on camera in a 43-minute reaction video, posted to YouTube on Saturday.
After setting fire to the toys, Shapiro also called “Barbie,” which currently holds a 90% score on Rotten Tomatoes from both critics and audiences alike, “drek” and “dog’s vomit,” dubbing it one of his bottom 10 movies of all time.
It didn’t take long for the internet to turn the flames back on Shapiro, starting with the YouTube comments for the video itself.

CNN and CEO Chris Licht came in for ferocious criticism over the chaotic town hall the cable news network held with former president Donald Trump on Wednesday.
Amid his 2024 presidential campaign, Trump sat down with CNN This Morning anchor Kaitlan Collins at the event held in New Hampshire. The 70-minute town hall was populated by mostly Trump supporters and likely Republican voters, and the former president was able to dominate proceedings, overwhelming Collins who tried in vain to correct Trump’s statements and falsehoods about issues including the Jan. 6 attack on the Capitol, a federal abortion ban, immigration and the war in Ukraine.
A particularly shocking exchange occurred over E. Jean Carroll, who had this week been awarded $5 million in damages after a New York jury held Trump liable for sexual abuse and defamation against the writer. Among other things, Trump once again claimed he did not know who Carroll...

“I am a writer on strike right now,” mega-producer and Queen Charlotte showrunner Shonda Rhimes told an intimate crowd at the Midnight Theatre in New York on Wednesday as part of her BAFTA tribute event.
Rhimes was responding to a question from moderator and journalist Wajahat Ali, who asked if she supported striking writers and what she would say to fellow scribes who spent the last two days on the picket lines as part of the first strike in 15 years. Writers Guild of America members began striking on Tuesday after the guild and the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers failed to reach a new deal by the May 1 deadline.

Adnan Syed, who became the subject of the hit 2014 podcast “Serial,” was freed by a Baltimore court after a judge vacated his murder conviction Monday.
Syed was convicted for the 1999 murder of ex-girlfriend Hae Min Lee, but a new investigation found that police withheld information, including the existence of two additional suspects, from Syed’s lawyers.
As prosecutors requested last week, Circuit Court Judge Melissa Phinn ordered that Syed’s conviction be vacated. She approved his release: The now 41-year-old had been in prison more more than 20 years.

According to the Associated Press, Phinn ruled that the state violated its legal obligation to share exculpatory evidence with Syed’s defense. She ordered him released from custody and placed on home detention with Gps location monitoring.

Refresh for updates…: “Now we have to worry about who wants to be the next Will Smith in comedy clubs and theaters,” says Kathy Griffin. “Jokes are what Chris Rock does,” tweets Mia Farrow. “And That’s How We Do It,” brags Jaden Smith.
Reactions to the slap that stunned the Oscars — when Will Smith bounded on stage to smack comedian Chris Rock over a joke about Smith’s wife Jada Pinkett Smith, are, to put it mildly, all over the place, with most seeming to come down decidedly for, as one comedian puts it, Team Rock.

New York Times columnist Charles M. Blow doubled down on his assertion that Pepé Le Pew “normalized rape culture” Saturday following right-wing backlash to an op-ed he wrote earlier this week, which first called out the Warner Bros-created cartoon skunk’s behavior.
“Rw blogs are mad bc I said Pepe Le Pew added to rape culture,” Blow tweeted Saturday. “Let’s see. 1. He grabs/kisses a girl/stranger, repeatedly, w/o consent and against her will. 2. She struggles mightily to get away from him, but he won’t release her 3. He locks a door to prevent her from escaping.”
The columnist added in a threaded tweet: “This helped teach boys that ‘no’ didn’t really mean no, that it was a part of ‘the game,’ the starting line of a power struggle. It taught overcoming a woman’s strenuous, even physical objections, was normal, adorable, funny. They didn’t even...

Now that Game of Thrones has ended with Bran the Broken as the victor, despite not having an actual throne to occupy, it’s time to start looking toward the future. And the past, according to HBO. Three GoT spinoffs are allegedly in the works, with one rumored to be a Targaryen-centric prequel. The other two are mysteries, but after Arya’s open-ended goodbye in the Thrones season finale, fans are calling for Maisie Williams to continue her role.
George R.R. Martin declared that he was, at one time, exploring five spinoffs for the show. That number was reduced to four when Bryan Cogman’s proposed script was announced to have been shot down back in April. My math might be a little rusty, but that leaves one spinoff idea unaccounted for. No matter, the odds are still fantastic that the 21-year-old Maisie will get her own show in the future.

Spike Lee was the first of many celebrities to express their displeasure with the final results of the 2019 Academy Awards, wherein the night’s biggest prize for best picture went to “Green Book.”
The Peter Farrelly-directed film, which stars Mahershala Ali and Viggo Mortensen, has fielded controversy throughout awards season. It tells the story of an unlikely friendship that blossoms between pianist Dr. Don Shirley and his driver Tony “Lip” Vallelonga as they make their way together across the American south.
Lee, whose film “BlacKkKlansman” was also in the running for best picture, took home the Oscar for best adapted screenplay. After Julia Roberts announced “Green Book” as the winner, Lee was seen waving his arms in anger before attempting to exit the theater, but was stopped at the doors and made to return to his seat for the remainder of the ceremony.

For many film critics who watched, the 2019 Academy Awards ended with a whimper when Peter Farrelly’s “Green Book” was named Best Picture. The victory was immediately met with outrage from movie journalists and critics on social media, who all felt a sense of déjà vu in watching a polarizing drama about race relations triumph over a critically acclaimed art house favorite. In this case, the critical daring was Alfonso Cuarón’s “Roma.”
“Green Book” beating “Roma” for Best Picture has now inspired countless comparisons to “Crash” beating “Brokeback Mountain” at the 78th Academy Awards in 2006. In fact, many film critics said that “Green Book” was such an uninspired Best Picture winner that it could help ease the backlash against “Crash” that continues to this day.”
“No one is happier than [‘Crash’ director] Paul Haggis right now,” RogerEbert.com editor Brian Tallerico wrote on Twitter.

Green Book took home the 2019 Academy Award for Best Picture — and some viewers are not happy about it.
The film, which tells the story of the late Dr. Don Shirley — the real-life African-American pianist, who recruited Italian-American Tony Lip to be his driver as he embarked on a concert tour in the Deep South in 1962 — closed out the Oscars Sunday night with its third win, prompting a number of social media users to express their dissatisfaction on Twitter.
The film also won Best Original Screenplay, and Mahershala Ali scored a trophy for Best Supporting Actor.

Most celebrities have not been vocal so far about the news that Asia Argento paid a young actor a settlement after a sexual encounter when he was 17.
The New York Times broke the story Sunday evening that former child actor and musician Jimmy Bennett had received $380,000 from Argento after the 2013 encounter in a California hotel.
Members of the media were less circumspect than Hollywood talent, although some questioned why the accuser was named and cautioned that the news should not overtake the progress made by the Me Too movement.
Oscar observer Brian Perry tweeted, “The big Q is whether people will look past this moment to still embrace all Asia has done for #MeToo.”
