Well, well, well, here we are again!
I’m excited to return to Daily Dead with Archie’s House of Horrors. It’s also a perfect way to kick off Archie Horror in 2024, with a second installment of a title that garnered great success for Archie in 2023: Pop’S Chock’Lit Shoppe Of Horrors. We’re returning to this fun anthology for a second serving of terror in Fresh Meat.
Sequels are ubiquitous when it comes to horror. There’s no better franchise game in media than that of the horror sequels. Series like Nightmare on Elm Street, Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Friday the 13th, Child’s Play, Saw, Scream, and—probably most notably—Halloween (of which even Archie has had a little fun with Michael Myers in the past), are not just beloved within the horror space, they’re iconic franchises with immediate recognizability. Would Freddy or Jason or even...

A few months ago, while covering Hex Studios’ fantasy film throwback The Slave and the Sorcerer, we also mentioned that Hex was also working to “build a new British horror and fantasy studio that’s inspired by the likes of Cannon, Hammer, and Aip”. Now their endeavor has taken a mind-blowing leap forward: Hex Studios has announced they’re working with the family of late producer Milton Subotsky to resurrect Amicus Productions! Hex co-founder Lawrie Brewster is set to be the president of the revived Amicus… and their first project will be exactly the sort of movie Amicus is best remembered for: a horror portmanteau (or anthology) film called In the Grip of Terror!
Milton Subotsky and Max Rosenberg founded Amicus Productions in the early ’60s, and from 1962 to 1977 they produced nearly thirty films, including Dr. Terror’s House of Horrors, Dr. Who and the Daleks, The Skull, The Psychopath,...

A maniacal hunter and collector of wild animals uses them to dispose of rivals and enemies in the shockingly violent Murders in the Zoo (dir. A. Edward Sutherland, 1933). Bela Lugosi stars in a creepy tale of strange characters, secret passages and a murderer who masters the art of “mind over matter” in Night Monster (dir. Ford Beebe, 1942).
What started out as a treasure-making scheme ends up deadly for a group of people stuck in a haunted castle with a killer known as “the Phantom” in Horror Island (dir. George Waggner, 1941). And finally, Rondo Hatton is “the Creeper”, a giant of a man used as an instrument of evil...

For those that don’t follow real estate, one of the biggest stories on the Hollywood front is that Brad Pitt recently sold his Los Angeles home for about $40 million. That’s a hell of a haul considering he bought it for $1.7 million. Oh, and this abode that Brad Pitt purchased in the mid-’90s was actually a haunted house sold to him by none other than Elvira, Mistress of the Dark.
Elvira told People she did her due diligence of letting Pitt know that he wasn’t purchasing any ordinary home. “We were just kind of warning him that a lot of weird things have been going on there in the house since we moved in…And he was very excited about that. He thought that was really cool…So we were telling Brad all about that and he loved it. I mean, there are not many buyers who...

What did Dora (Maddie Hasson) do all those years ago? That’s the question she’s asking herself as she sits straightjacketed in a hospital she doesn’t remember entering. What did her family do to her to earn that ire? That’s the question her doctors (Genesis Rodriguez’s Dr. Melanie and Stephen McHattie’s Dr. Clark) hope to answer for her through an invasively experimental psychiatric evaluation. While the two questions ultimately go together considering her actions were a response to that abuse, separating them should always be undertaken with extreme delicacy. Dora’s overall wellbeing should remain paramount regardless of how effective the therapy could prove by pushing the envelope beyond its limits since clarity can sometimes hurt as much as it can heal. Unless, of course, something else is going on.

Two and a half years ago, Sony Pictures came out the winner in a bidding war over the film rights to author Riley Sager’s novel Home Before Dark (pick up a copy Here) – which hadn’t even been published yet at the time. Now the project is finally moving forward, as The Hollywood Reporter breaks the news that Creep and There’s Someone Inside Your House director Patrick Brice has signed on to direct the film, working from a screenplay by The Invitation‘s Blair Butler.
Shawn Levy’s production company 21 Laps Entertainment, one of the companies behind the Netflix series Stranger Things, is producing Home Before Dark, with SVP Emily Morris and creative executive Emily Feher overseeing the project. Since the adaptation is said to be in the “early development” phase, Sony isn’t sharing details on the plot… but since it’s based on Sager’s novel,...

The haunted house has always been one of the elemental settings in horror – the materialization of externalized evil – and is enjoying considerable success today through the likes of The Conjuring multiverse. When horror entered the ‘70s, ghosts became passé as audiences clamored for more visceral thrills that reflected the current societal concerns; despair marbled with a bit of hope became the name of the game, as films like The Exorcist presented strong opinions regarding faith in the face of crises. Six months earlier however saw the release of The Legend of Hell House (1973), a somewhat traditional yet exceptional spookshow with just enough ‘70s pessimism to fit in nicely with the decade’s mores.
Released by 20th Century Fox in the U.S. mid June, Legend received mixed reviews from critics; some admired its somewhat restrained scares and performances, while others felt it didn’t lean enough into the lurid material...

When it comes to anthologies, no one scratches my omnibus itch better than Amicus. From Dr. Terror’s House of Horrors (1965) to (my personal favorite) Tales from the Crypt (1972) through From Beyond the Grave (’74), time and again they served up slivers of ghoulish goodness, succinct and delectable. Asylum (1972) is no different; as a matter of fact, to its advantage it probably has the best wraparound of any horror anthology, which helps set it apart.
Released in the U.K. in July with a rollout stateside by Cinerama Releasing Corporation in November, Asylum did well in its homeland, but fared less with the critics; Roger Ebert’s bizarre (yet humorous) two star review focuses completely on producer (and Amicus co-founder) Max J. Rosenberg’s obsession with coleslaw. Splayed cabbage aside, Asylum holds up as a witty multistory film with a wicked denouement and (as usual) solid work from legendary writer Robert Bloch...

Crypt of Curiosities: A Look Back at Universal’s Horror Films Featuring Rondo Hatton’s “The Creeper”
In the mid ’40s, the Universal Monsters were in a tough spot. Up until then, the ’40s had been a nonstop flow of sequels and one-offs, with an avalanche of Invisible Men, Draculas (Draculi?), and the odd Frozen Ghost here and there releasing at a steady clip. But this high release rate had made them stale, and by the time 1946 came around, the studio was in desperate need of a new, recognizable monster.
Enter Rondo Hatton. A journalist-turned-b-movie-bit-player, Hatton had been afflicted with acromegaly for most of his adult life, which enlarged his jaw and pronounced his forehead over the years. This distinctive appearance led to him being cast as nameless goons up until the ’40s, when he got his big, career-defining role as The Creeper.
Curiously, The Creeper’s first appearance wasn’t in a horror film at all. It was in The Pearl of Death (1944), one of the...

[Guest authors Christopher Lombardo and Jeff Kirschner of Really Awful Movies share their diagnosis of healthcare horror movies with Daily Dead readers.] When the Us was overhauling its healthcare system, much to-do was made about so-called “death panels,” government committees who would decide who lives and dies based on asset allocation. As far as healthcare horrors are concerned, it turns out that playing God is very real, but luckily only in film and Sarah Palin’s fright-filled imagination. Nefarious nurses, murderous docs, and psychopathic hallway stalkers in horror movies have effectively put end-of-life issues at the forefront, but not in a way that can be reasonably debated: your life, their ending of it.
We’ve decided to weigh in on the healthcare hullabaloo by looking at fictional settings that make One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest look like the height of patient-centered thinking. So sit back and self-medicate with whatever’s in the fridge (or better still, the medicine cabinet) and take these seven healthcare horrors—but don’t call us in the morning.

From the mid sixties to the mid seventies, omnibus (or anthology, or portmanteau if you’re really fancy) horror films were big business. And Amicus Productions ruled the roost. Between ’65 and ’74 they released seven such films, starting with Dr. Terror’s House of Horrors (not to be confused with Dr. Tongue’s Evil House of Pancakes) and culminating with From Beyond the Grave. Today’s film lands in the middle, The House that Dripped Blood (1971) showcasing a company just starting to hit their stride with anthologies.
Popularity of the omnibus format has ebbed and flowed throughout the last 50 years; after Amicus stopped making them, George Romero and Stephen King collaborated on one of the finest, Creepshow (1982), which didn’t so much kick start a revival as have everyone afraid to compete. Throughout the late ‘80s and ‘90s there were pockets of inspiration, Tales from the Hood (1995) and of course HBO...

Horror comics and magazines filled my shelves as a kid, titles such as Creepy, Eerie, House of Secrets and The Witching Hour weakening my eyes and troubling my sleep. I simply could not get enough of them. However, when I discovered that there were films made in the same multistory, blood soaked spirit, well, I forgot about sleep altogether. My first stop was Creepshow (1982), and delighted with that, I made my way back through earlier (and gentler) excursions of terror. Step right up ladies and gentlemen! Enter the Torture Garden (1967), a carnival exhibit where the evils of man are laid before you…for a price.
Released by Columbia Pictures November ’67 in the U.K. and July ’68 in North America, Torture Garden was the second film of Amicus Productions (Dr. Terror’s House of Horrors (’65) being the first) that followed the omnibus format. Amicus, started by producers Max Rosenberg and Milton Subotsky,...

Throughout a very prolific and sometimes uneven career as an incredibly notable genre filmmaker, Wes Craven’s aesthetic often grapples with issues of revenge and adolescence, having given birth to the iconic The Nightmare on Elm Street and Scream franchises, both series exploring notions of metatextual reinvention. Cutting his teeth with grindhouse horror titles that have since been re-made, many of his more obscure offerings have languished in the critical realm of inconsequential desolation. But it’s his 1991 offering The People Under the Stairs which is worthy of reappraisal, arguably the filmmaker’s best and most bizarre work. Campy, hysterical, creepy, and replete with a socially conscious message, it’s an early 90s cult classic that retains its power to delight and weird out.

Weeks have passed, and the Pretty Little Liars are obviously still trying to fully acclimate to life among the living (as well as life after Charles Dilaurentis’ House of Horrors). Nobody said it would be an easy road though, and this week’s episode, “No Stone Unturned,” was the perfect example as to why: Ladies, you can’t just keep assuming everyone is A. Especially when you’re never right, and innocent people’s lives are also on the line. Sadly, that thought has rarely crossed the Liars’ minds in all [...]...

With the death of horror film legend Christopher Lee, the last of the legendary honor guard of horror has passed on. He was part of an elite group that created the horror genre. Lee’s passing is a reminder that it’s been a long time since we had a new horror film superstar. Is the day of the horror film specialist gone forever? Where are the big-screen boogie-men for the 21st century?
Once upon a time there were a group of actors, known as the ‘screen boogiemen’ who created the horror film/monster movie genre (starting in Universal Studios and later in Hammer Studios.) They were specialists who understood the psychology and performance style of horror cinema and became legends in the industry. It's Tuesday, which means "Pretty Little Liars'" fab four are up to their usual antics: being ritualistically stalked by a deranged sociopath while simultaneously making terrible decisions when it comes to their love lives! This week, the liars dealt with their relationship drama (spoiler alert: Rip Spoby), went head-to-head with A in a dance-off, and -- most importantly -- found out the jaw-dropping truth about Mona Vanderwaal's death. Hint: she faked it! Maybe.
Spencer Cheats On Toby, Makes Us Doubt True Meaning of Love
You're probably wondering if that misguided grifter named Jonny is still living in Spencer Hastings' backyard. Unfortunately, the answer is yes. Even worse, their horrifying Watership Down mural is poached and illegally put in a gallery, prompting them to steal back their work. Bad call for all kinds of reasons, but mostly because Toby Cavanaugh drives up in his cop car full of buzz kills and ruins everything.

When we hear the phrase serial killer we may automatically think of men – but some of the most deadly murderers in history are female. We may like to play simple games based on crime, death and intrigue such as the themed slots you would find at SuperCasino, but the reality is often horrific – and sometimes comes with an Xx chromosome. Here’s a top ten list of evil women in history.
1) Myra Hindley
The 'Moors Murderers', Hindley and her boyfriend Ian Brady, killed five young people in the 1960s in Manchester, England, sexually assaulting four of them. Several bodies were left on bleak, desolate moorland; the corpse of Keith Bennett has never been found. The judge described Hindley and Brady, who used axes, blades and even pieces of string to murder their victims, as “two sadistic killers of the utmost depravity.”

Over the past month, content creators have flocked to the YouTube production spaces in Los Angeles, New York, Tokyo, and London, where Legendary Entertainment provided sets from the upcoming film Crimson Peak as settings for Halloween-themed videos. Throughout the month of October, the results of this "YouTube Space House of Horrors" program have been released across YouTube. House of Horrors is more than just a fun cross-promotion. It's also a contest through which Crimson Peak director will sit down for a rough-cut consultation with one creator from each region. Ultimately, one creator will earn a development deal with Legendary. A pair of former Internet Icon contestants have emerged as two of the frontrunners. The Brothers Riedell directed Dinner, a fun horror short featuring Olga Kay. Lana McKissack, on the other hand, has offered a darker option with The Passing, which doubles as a walkthrough of the haunted house set. Other...

Not long ago, Legendary and YouTube teamed up with select YouTube channels and sundry online personalities to create a series of short horror films for this Halloween season. So far, many of the shorts I have seen have been a mix of comedy and horror, playing to the personalities of those who have found their success via YouTube. This led me to ask: Did anyone actually try to make something scary? The answer is yes.
Two shorts made their debut today: Dinner, by the Brothers Riedell, and The Passing by John Wynn. Shot on the YouTube "House of Horrors" stage, both eschew the laughs of previous efforts and go for the throat.

YouTube announced a contest this week in collaboration with director Guillermo Del Toro in which entrants with YouTube channels can submit a short horror story to be judged by Del Toro, with the winner getting the opportunity to sign a deal with Del Toro’s Legendary Pictures.
The contest is called “You Tube Space House of Horrors: A Legendary Halloween“, and starting September 22, YouTube will open up YouTube Space locations in Los Angeles, London, New York and Tokyo to applicants to produce their horror film on one of YouTube Space’s custom sets. Legendary Entertainment will combine a talent hunt with subtle promotion of its upcoming Guillermo Del Toro horror film Crimson Peak in a contest announced in concert with Google’s YouTube Spaces, which provide production and post-production facilities for YouTube creators in four big cities.
The deal is a successor to a Legendary/Warner Bros. project earlier this year for Godzilla. Sets from that film were installed at the YouTube Space L.A., located in the Playa Vista neighborhood, and 30 YouTube creators were chosen based on their proposals to make a wide variety of videos with Godzilla involved in some fashion.

How exactly do you define fear? It's not something that can be broken down and analysed in seconds, since one man's fear is another man's shrug. Terrified of spiders? Well, someone, somewhere is clutching a spider in his or her clutched hands with nonchalant weariness as they creep to the door to deposit this Fiend Of Eight Legs in the outside world. Scared of the dark? Try reconciling that with miners, stargazers or even club DJs, squinting against the gloom to make sure they don't stick their scratchy copy of Bombalurina's Itsy Bitsy Teeny Weeny Yellow Polka Dot Bikini on the turntable. I've read accounts of people with morbid fears of baked beans, crowd singing and water – which just proves that when it comes to fears and phobias, us humans are a complex bunch.
