The trailer for the latest Apple TV+ Charlie Brown special is here, and no offense to Peppermint Patty, Lucy, and the rest of the crew, but this looks like it's set to be the best Peanuts character spotlight story yet. The new animated special is titled "Welcome Home, Franklin," and it's set to finally shine a light on Franklin, Charlie Brown's laid back friend who joined the comic strip in 1968. Notably, Franklin is the only Black character in the main Peanuts gang lineup that's featured prominently in several of the most popular specials, and his role in the friend group has led to plenty of memeing and criticism over the years.
In the social media age, Franklin is perhaps best known for his appearance in "A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving," where he's seated awkwardly far across the table from all of his white friends. Screencaps from the 1973 special tend to go viral around the holiday season,...

With the fourth Thursday of every November comes an opportunity to give thanks, as families across the United States gather around warm fires and hand-decorated tables to break seasonal bread. The festive tableau — loved ones pulled close by the promise of turkey, stuffing, sides, and pie — is synonymous with what little it seems still unites Americans these days. And yet, the actual experience of the divisive holiday (notorious for its deeply dubious history origins and penchant for forcing fun with problematic relatives) can be enough to send you fleeing from the dining room in a fit of stressed-out gravy sweats.
When you’re done navigating the metaphoric minefield that is kith and kin, why not find comfort in a different kind of holiday hearth? We’re talking about the glowing screens that keep cozy all year long. Whether you’re enjoying a festive holiday movie or something else, films help...

It’s not just about those repeats of A Christmas Story on TNT anymore.
Multiple linear channels and streamers are getting into the holiday spirit this month and next by dropping original Christmas movies, as well as old favorites and one-off holiday specials. As usual, Hallmark has wall-to-wall flicks planned until the end of the month, but Great American Family, Lifetime and BET have their own original slates as well to help ring in the new year.
And if the classics are all that you are looking for, there are still airings of It’s a Wonderful Life, Elf, How the Grinch Stole Christmas, Home Alone, The Santa Cause, The Wizard of Oz and Miracle on 34th Street scheduled for the boomers and Gen Xers.
And yes, on the big days, several channels have do have marathon programming events.

As has become the tradition in recent years on the eve of the great American Feast, ABC went with it’s A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving (1.5/7) special last night, CBS had a primetime of originals and almost everything else was a repeat.

Christmas + romance + cute puppies = A recipe for ratings success at Hallmark. The network known for its sappy made-for-tv movies hit it big over the Thanksgiving weekend with five nights of ratings gifts — making for its biggest week in network history. Among total viewers in cable, only “The Walking Dead” (and its companion “Talking Dead”) and NFL football did better than Hallmark’s Friday, Saturday, and Sunday movies.
The film “Switched for Christmas,” starring Candace Cameron Bure as identical twin sisters who swap lives for the holiday, became the most-watched telecast in Hallmark Channel history on Sunday night. The film averaged 5.8 million viewers after three days of DVR and video on demand usage. Mark Deklin, Eion Bailey, and Happy the Dog — see, it ticked all the Hallmark boxes — also starred.
Close behind, Saturday’s “Hallmark Hall of Fame” presentation, “The Christmas Train,” averaged 5.6 million viewers — beating the four broadcast networks on the night.

America seemed to be on a bit of a pre-holiday diet last night when it came to Thanksgiving Eve primetime. With CBS the only net to put originals up on Wednesday, encores and specials galore took a bit of dip from last year. Once again, A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving (1.7/7) was the top rated show among adults 18-49 on the night before the feast and a new Survivor (1.4/5) was the most watched with an audience of 7.4 million. However, the ABC special had 11% less demo meat…...

Many series that bothered airing original episodes on Wednesday night saw the inevitable dips that come with the long Thanksgiving weekend — though CBS notched wins across the board with its new episodes. Survivor, averaging a 2.1 rating among adults 18-49, led the pack — though down three-tenths of a point from last week. Criminal Minds (2.2 adults) and Stalker (1.6 adults) were steady. Top demo honors for the night didn't belong to Survivor alone. ABC's annual airing of A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving pulled a 2.1 rating with adults 18-49 as well. That's up 31

Stalker and The Mysteries of Laura can't compete with good 'ol Charlie Brown. ABC's annual presentation of It's the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown beat most broadcast shows Wednesday night in the key young adult demo. In fact, the 48-year-old animated repeat topped nine other series. At 8:30 p.m., Charlie Brown had 6.3 million viewers and a 2.1 rating among adults 18-49. That was higher than The CW's Arrow (0.8 rating), Fox's Hell's Kitchen (1.2) and Red Band Society (0.9), NBC's Laura (1.3), Law & Order: Svu (1.7) and Chicago P.D. (1.6), CBS' Stalker (1.7) and ABC's own Nashville (1.3) and Charlie Brown's lead-in Toy Story of Terror (1.8). Coming out ahead...

There’s going to be more Charlie Brown on ABC for the next few years. The network announced today that its finalized an an additional 5-year agreement with Peanuts Worldwide LLC and Lee Mendelson Film Productions to continue showing the Charles M. Schulz holiday specials until 2020. First aired in 1965, It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown, A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving, and A Charlie Brown Christmas have been on ABC since December 2001. The Emmy Award-winning specials by Peanuts creator Charles Schulz are produced and animated by Lee Mendelson and Bill Melendez. No details of the agreement were made available. However, even while down from last year this year, the specials certainly have been a return on investment for the network. Airing on December 3, this year’s A Charlie Brown Christmas was down 34% from its November 28 airing in 2012 but still beat Fox’s new Almost Human among Adults 18-49. Last year’s...

Talk about a ratings turkey. Lady Gaga teamed up with the Muppets for an ABC special on Thanksgiving, which failed to reel in viewers on the holiday night. The 90-minute special, titled Lady Gaga & The Muppets Holiday Spectacular, only attracted 3.6 million viewers and a low 0.9 rating in the all-important adults 18-49 demo. And while we would blame viewers just being too tired from all the turkey they consumed earlier in the night, the network's annual 8 p.m. repeat of A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving brought in 5.6 million viewers and 1.6 rating. The low ratings for Gaga's special with the Muppets, which featured cameos from Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Sir Elton John and Kristen Bell, are...

The Spider-Man baloon may have been clipped by a tree, but the ratings for NBC’s Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade continued their ascent. After hitting a six-year high in the metered markets last year with a 11.5 household rating, NBC’s 9 Am-noon coverage of the parade anchored by bearded Al Roker and Matt Lauer did one better yesterday, climbing 17% to a 13.5, an 11-year high. NBC’s Thanksgiving dominance extended to primetime with the Steelers-Ravens football game, which drew a 11.8 metered market rating, up 3% from last year, and the network is expected to win the night in total viewers and adults 18-49. ABC’s A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving (1.6 in 18-49) from 8-9:30 Pm ranked in between the network’s two rebroadcasts of the special last year — 2.2 on Thanksgiving Eve and 1.1 on Thanksgiving. It was followed by Lady Gaga And The Muppets Holiday Spectacular (0.9), which was down 25% from the Michael Jackson...

Fast National ratings for Thursday, Nov. 28, 2013
Following a day of turkey and football, Americans settled down for ... more football, as NBC's prime-time NFL broadcast drew the night's best ratings by a long shot. CBS also got a boost from its afternoon football game, which ran into the start of primetime.
Elsewhere Thursday, new episodes of "The X Factor" and "Glee" struggled badly opposite the NFL. "Lady Gaga and the Muppets' Holiday Spectacular" on ABC came in lower than Gaga's Thanksgiving special two years ago, but "A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving" was up over last year.
NBC averaged 17.6 million viewers and a 9.2 rating/16 share in households in primetime, pending updates for its NFL broadcast. That was more than twice as many viewers as second-place CBS (7.35 million, 4.0/8). ABC (4.2 million, 2.2/4) came in third, and Fox (3.3 million, 2.0/4) took fourth. The CW trailed with 1.1 million viewers and a 0.7/1.

ABC’s 90-minute Lady Gaga & The Muppets Holiday Spectacular had only 3.6 million viewers and a 0.9 rating among adults 18-49 at 9:30 p.m. That’s considerable less than ABC’s 8 p.m. annual repeat of a 40-year-old holiday special, A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving (5.3 million, 1.6 in demo).

When we counted down our top seven Thanksgiving videos of 2013, readers noted that we failed to mention a special Thanksgiving event that won't happen again for more than 70,000 years: Thanksgivukkah, the holiday resulting from the convergence of Thanksgiving and Hanukkah. Sure enough, there have been many Thanksgivukkah-themed videos posted to YouTube over the past few weeks, but if you want to sum up the whole phenomenon in one go, please direct your attention to the Shoot East channel, which has debuted a fake trailer for a horror film called 'Thanksgivukkah: The Movie'. Amidst a sea of similar Thanksgivukkah musical adventures (of which this 'Royals' parody stands out), only Shoot East's trailer really dials the outlandish stereotypes up to 11. If you're going to fuel a video with a handful of broad caricatures (which, to be frank, seems to be the goal of most Thanksgivukkah videos), why not go all out? 'Thanksgivukkah:...

Imagine sitting down with your family in November to watch the classic Peanuts television special A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving. After enjoying the antics of Snoopy making a Thanksgiving dinner of toast, pretzels, popcorn, and jelly beans for all the neighborhood kids who rudely invite themselves over to Charlie Brown’s place, you find yourself horrified at the final scene: Snoopy’s little yellow buddy Woodstock stuffs himself on turkey. To this day, this scene shocks viewers, with some accusing Woodstock of engaging in cannibalism. He seemed like such a nice bird. Since we love a good Thanksgiving feast, and we love the Peanuts characters, this got us thinking: Is Woodstock really a cannibal? The Answer: Not at all. And in the end, humans are worse. In spite of being accused by Jeff Winger of sounding like the Jim Belushi of speech openings, let’s start by looking at the actual definition of “cannibal.” According...

If you were growing sick and tired of watching A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving every November, Relativity’s got your back with Free Birds, the animated Owen Wilson and Woody Harrelson-voiced turkey caper filling the Thanksgiving film void we didn’t know was empty. Nothing says “gather around the table with friends and loved ones” like “animated birds facing their own mortality.” Reggie (Wilson) is a happy turkey who was pardoned by the President and now lives at Camp David, eating pizza and watching TV. He’s even got a lady-turkey (Amy Poehler). Jake (Harrelson) comes from the Turkey Freedom Front, a radical group fighting for freedom from the dinner table. The two team up to find a time machine in a government lab to take back to the first Thanksgiving so they can stop turkey from getting on the menu altogether. Now, I know they’re simple birds, but if they’re smart enough to master...
