Talk about a transformation!
When Steve Tanen was a teenager, he was continually bullied and shamed for being obese — but after losing 100 lbs., he started his journey towards becoming a personal trainer. Now 29, he owns his own fitness studio — Transformation Fitness Studio —in Staten Island.

Luke Skywalker himself will now forever be connected to San Diego, California. That's because over the weekend city leaders dedicated a street in honor of actor Mark Hamill. A street is now named after him in Clairemont – the very neighborhood Hamill spent several years of his childhood in the 1960s.
Mark Hamill tweeted out photos of the large event(below), and the unveiling of "Mark Hamill Drive."
Hamill visited his old neighborhood for the street dedication ceremony. Hamill attended Hale Junior High School in Clairemont in the early 1960s, lived with his family in the 5900 block of Castleton Drive at the time. Hamill came from a military family so he moved a lot, Hamill said he went to nine schools in 12 years. But he spent the longest amount of time in San Diego. At the ceremony he said:

I was so young the first time I saw classic Star Trek, that I can’t remember a time I didn’t know about Captain Kirk, Mr. Spock and the rest of the crew of the Starship Enterprise. The show and I are about the same age and I enjoy it now as much as I did when I discovered it back in the early 1970s. Since this week is the 50th Anniversary of the greatest and most influential American science fiction TV show ever made, here is a look back through the eyes of someone who grew up and grew old with Star Trek.
I was too young to watch the original run of Star Trek in the 1960s (no TV in the cradle) but when I was in elementary school in the early 70s, the show went into syndication. In New York it was running week nights at...

At last year’s Fantastic Fest, I was introduced to an unkillable teacher (nicknamed “Ut” by students) and his class of assassins-in-training who must execute their tentacled mentor before he blows up the Earth. The movie was Assassination Classroom, and the tone was manga-inspired, coming-of-age weirdness at the hand of a borderline superhero/supervillain. Ya empowerment with a Japanese flair – but could director Eiichirô Hasumi capture the same outcasted significance in the film’s sequel, Assassination Classroom: Graduation? Yes and no, thankfully with a stronger emphasis on “Yes.”
Hasumi’s sequel returns to Kunugigaoka Junior High School, where Ut’s E-Class continues to learn from their assassination-happy alien teacher – but with graduation approaching, the severity of their actions begins to kick in. Besides figuring out what career path to take, the students are running out of time to kill Ut, thus saving humanity from a fiery destruction. The government continues...

Where the f@ck do I even begin with Assassination Classroom, an anime/manga adaptation about a classroom of high-school-age assassins? It’s a film so absurd, that even when one of the main characters – an alien homeroom teacher who intends to destroy Earth – explains the plot rather coherently, another character takes over by immediately saying “That probably made no sense.” Then again, do other Japanese movies like Dead Sushi, Tokyo Gore Police, and Machine Girl make any sense? Welcome to one of the wildest cinematic genres around.
Assassination Classroom is an apocalyptic bit of J-pop mayhem that’s an underdog story at heart, but an alien invasion film in practice – among twenty billion other elements. How about we settle on “children have to defeat a giant smiley face before he eliminates humanity” and move on from there?
In Kunugigaoka Junior High School, the E-Class represent the lowest of the low.

An extraterrestrial has destroyed most of the moon and will destroy the Earth at the end of the school year. To help wait it out the creature made a most outlandish suggestion. At Kunugigaoka Junior High School the flunkies of classroom 3-e, nicknamed the End, will be tasked with assassinating this alien. If any of the students in 3-e can kill it they will save the planet and also win 10 billion yen. He will be their teacher for the school year, teaching regular subjects, and will also teach them about assassinating. This extraterrestrial does not have a name so the students decide to call him Ut, for Un-Killable Teacher. The thing is, Ut looks utterly ridiculous. He has a huge bulbous yellow head like a...

Japanese live action movies tend to be a hit or miss. Depending on the directorial take, emotional balance of the script, and the actors cast, it can be worthy of endless praises and awards such as the recently concluded “Rurouni Kenshin” trilogy. Otherwise, it can end up as a movie better forgotten such as the infamous Hollywood adaptation of a widely popular series, “Dragonball Evolution.”
While news of live action films may make some of us cringe in their anticipated cheesiness and possible inferior quality, the chances of seeing our beloved manga and anime characters come to life are often slim. That’s why today, we present you with three upcoming live action films that we believe are potential hits!

Beginning Friday, Spike Lee's crowd-funded love story about immortal blood addicts, Da Sweet Blood of Jesus, unspools in select theaters. Lee, who wrote, produced, and directed the film, spoke with Vulture about the movies, books, and people that have influenced his latest joint, as well as his career as a whole. The Autobiography of Malcolm X: As Told to Alex Haley Every year, I go back and reread The Autobiography of Malcolm X: As Told to Alex Haley. I was in seventh or eighth grade in Rothschild Junior High School in Fort Greene, Brooklyn, New York — we had to read that, and that book changed my life. At that time, I had no idea what I wanted to do, let alone be a filmmaker. But I was blessed to get to do [Malcolm X] with the great, great Denzel Washington, who gave one of the greatest performances of all time.

The Wonder Years
Cast: Fred Savage, Josh Saviano, Danica McKellar, Dan Lauria, Alley Mills, Daniel Stern, Jason Hervey
Due Out: October 7, 2014
Who’S It For? “The Wonder Years” is timeless. Thankfully it doesn’t feel dated simply because I was a child of the ’80s trying to understand life in the late ’60s. “The Wonder Years” was my gateway drug to a nostalgia I didn’t even know. Like many of you, I grew up with Kevin. I hoped for Winnie, I had friends like Paul (and probably was Paul more than I realized).
I can’t wait to show “The Wonder Years” to my son. I’ll have to wait, because he hasn’t even turned two yet, but now I have six episodes to show him, and hopefully that will just be the beginning.

The Wonder Years series is finally coming to DVD and StarVista Entertainment and Time Life have revealed the creative packaging for the 26-disc set! This is just one of several different ways that the series will be released.
This is one of my favorite TV series of all time, and I'm so happy that I'll actually be able to finally own it. I never thought it would happen. The show was created by Neal Marlens and Carol Black and it had a great cast, which included Fred Savage, Danica McKellar, Jason Hervey, and many more. If you haven't watched this series in awhile you might be surprised by some of the other actors that showed up in this show before they became big stars.
Here are some details of some of the other things that will be included with the set:

The past few weeks, I’ve fallen accidentally in love with a show 14 years too late. The Judd Apatow produced Wonder Years of my generation (or technically… the generation above mine) has finally caught the apple of my eye and has me a bit nostalgic.
It’s hard to figure out how we end up in the cliques we do. Sometimes it’s proximity. Sometimes it’s commonality. In my case? Perhaps a bit of both. My first best friend, to best of my knowledge, became such because he sat across from me in Kindergarten. From then until fourth grade, he and I played together often both during school, and after. As we grew up, we were picked on. He, perhaps for his glasses, for being tall, and for being incredibly smart. Me? Thanks to a mother well-versed in podiatry, I was stricken with wearing proper orthopedic saddle shoes. Long...

Adventure Time’s tremendous first season has finally come out in the UK. Here’s why that news is worth celebrating…
Of all the available methods of recapturing your childhood, watching Adventure Time is surely the least ungainly and the most fun. Cosier than a onesie, less tiring than a bouncy castle, and better for your teeth than a bag of Haribo, Pendleton Ward’s animated fantasy series pulls you through a portal to the days of running home from school, sitting cross-legged inches from the TV, and being thoroughly delighted by a cartoon.
Except, we never had anything quite this delightful or barking mad when we were children; or if we did, it lost its shine in the cold, hard light of adulthood. Adventure Time is a programme adults can watch with kids and as kids (just as well now that we’re...

Perhaps the best and worst thing about young teenagers is that they're capable of what George W. Bush fans used to call “great moral clarity.” In HBO's sure-to-make-you-bawl documentary Valentine Road, Aliyah, a student at E.O. Green Junior High School in Oxnard, California, breaks down the differences between gayness and transsexuality with a certainty and sensitivity that too few adults possess—it's her conviction that the distinctions are of vital importance. Another kid, explaining what it's like to be gay in a small town, spills a truth most grown-ups would be too polite to: “It's basically ignorance. That is the plague of our school.” When kids like these tape over their mouths for the annual Day of Silence protest against schools' tre...

A funny thing about Unshaven Comics: at the conventions I have always felt out of place. Kyle over the years has become a one man sales force. Matt? A commission-churning machine. Me? I used to laugh as say “I’m in marketing.” Mainly because like everyone in marketing… it meant “doing everything that isn’t actually selling.” I networked with other professionals. I people-watched. I tallied our money, made change, and added polite conversation when the paying customers wanted to chat (and Kyle, in complete shock to them, only wanted their money…The cur!). And then, as is his way… Matt threw down a gauntlet.
“Dude. Just draw something.”
On paper? Without my computer? And Wacom? And the internet to guide me? And no digital references? What kind of hell was he inviting me to!? And, as a joke, I drew Domo-Kun. Domo, a Japanese TV mascot and popular-with-the-hipsters-and-kawaii-crowd character.

They didn't know it at the time, but the students of Ralph Waldo Emerson Junior High School in Los Angeles were sitting in the company of greatness the day this 1941 school photo was taken. Why, you ask? Because a student by the name of Norma Jeane Baker was in their midst, a young lady who would rise to fame under the name Marilyn Monroe.
The vintage photo is part of an upcoming sale of entertainment memorabilia at Bonhams' Auction House. It is estimated to fetch $7,000 - $9,000, but the face of young Norma Jeane seated next to her classmates is priceless.
Here's a close-up of the class photo:
The image is accompanied by a sweet note the aspiring actress penned on the back of the photograph, where a number of the pictured students wrote dedications to each other. She was 15 at the time, four years away from the start of her...

For the first time since 1998 (remember when he was still that fresh-faced, breakout star of Swingers and The Lost Word: Jurassic Park?), Vince Vaughn returned this week to host Saturday Night Live. That’s a lifetime between hosting gigs, and it struck me as curious that he’d gone so long between trips to Studio 8H.
Alas, unlike what we saw from Melissa McCarthy last week, a strong monologue ultimately didn’t translate into a laugh-laden show. Because after a strong, confident start, Vaughn lost the plot (was it the cue cards?) in a big, big way. Choosing only two...

London, Nov mber 26: A rare school photograph showing a fresh-faced Marilyn Monroe is to go on sale.
The 15-year-old, who was then known as Norma Jeane Baker, appears in a panoramic shot of the whole class year at Ralph Waldo Emerson Junior High School in Los Angeles.
It was taken in the summer of 1941, just a few years before she became a model, actress and global sex symbol.
The photograph, which measures 8 x 24 inches, is expected to sell for up to 1,500 pounds when it goes under the hammer at the auction in Stockport, Cheshire, next week, the Mirror reported.
Also up for sale at the same auction are nine.

An enthusiastic Jrr Tolkien fan has crafted his own Hobbit Hole using 2,600 balloons. Jeremy Telford from Pleasant Grove, Utah spent 40 hours over the course of three days creating the indoor hideaway, which features a roof, fireplace and balloon furniture. The 34-year-old - who earns a living as a balloon sculptor - built the entire structure in his living room and used a hand pump rather than lung power to inflate his materials. "I have been a Tolkien fan ever since reading The Hobbit in Junior High School," he said, reports Orange News. Many people go through different style phases in middle and high school, but we think Winona Ryder's look during her punk phase was, uh, pretty shocking.
Our friends over at Snakkle.com uncovered a photo of the actress from her 8th grade year at Petaluma Junior High School, in Petaluma, Calif., and she's almost unrecognizable. Who would have guessed that Ryder would end up walking red carpets as a glamorous Hollywood actress years later?
Other stars who went through darker style phases when they were younger include Christina Hendricks, Rachel Weisz and Elizabeth Hurley.
Check out Winona's past and present photos below. For more old school photos, head over to Snakkle.com.

Washington — Sarah Jessica Parker, Kerry Washington and Forest Whitaker are adopting some of the nation's worst-performing schools and pledging Monday to help the Obama administration turn them around by integrating arts education.
The President's Committee on the Arts and the Humanities will announce a new Turnaround Arts initiative as a pilot project for eight schools with officials from the White House and U.S. Department of Education. Organizers said they aim to demonstrate new research that shows the arts can help reduce behavioral problems and increase student attendance, engagement and academic success.
The two-year initiative will target eight high-poverty elementary and middle schools. The schools were among the lowest-performing schools in each of their states and had qualified for about $14 million in federal School Improvement Grants from the Obama administration. The arts initiative will bring new training for educators at the Aspen Institute, art supplies and musical instruments totaling about $1 million per year,...

The release of The Raid: Redemption has made us revisit our favourite martial arts flicks and pick five favourite films to suggest for Sound on Sight readers.
Before I give my five picks though, I would like to turn the floor over to a man who has been a friend of mine since grade seven at Oxford Street Junior High School in Halifax. As the line editor for Steve Jackson Games’ “Generic Universal RolePlaying System”, Sean Punch aka Dr. Kromm has been directly or indirectly responsible for a number of source-books on the Martial Arts including writing and editing Gurps Martial Arts.
I asked him earlier this week what films he would put on his list. He named three.
You’re not looking for goofy, cinematic Asian martial arts are you? Because I tend to like stuff that is more realistic, more like what commandos would use. You mentioned Steven Seagal...

Chicago – A quick search of the web will reveal hundreds of articles and blog posts and message board rants about how the smash hit “The Hunger Games,” both the Suzanne Collins book and Gary Ross movie, wouldn’t exist without Kinji Fukasaku’s amazing 2000 film “Battle Royale” (itself based on a 1999 Japanese book). See for yourself what all the fuss is about with an amazing four-disc collection from Anchor Bay, “Battle Royale: The Complete Collection,” which brings the landmark film to the United States for the first time.
Blu-ray Rating: 5.0/5.0
It’s amazing how a Hollywood version can lessen the controversy surrounding an international one. Although the theory that “Battle Royale” never earned a Blu-ray or DVD release in the States due purely to its violent nature and intense subject matter has been a bit overblown. The fact is that much-more-violent films get U.S. releases all the time but the Hollywood machine,...

"...in 2000, director Fukasaku unleashed 'Battle Royale', his violent epic about an innocent group of 'alternate-reality' Japanese Junior High School students forced by the government to hunt their classmates.
"In 2003, the sequel 'Battle Royale II: Requiem' featuring a new class, new rules, and a brutal terrorist plot by the first film’s young survivors – triggered its own firestorm around the world.
"Now for the first time ever, experience the entire 'Battle Royale' saga on 4 discs – including more than 3 hours of definitive Special Features – that forever blasts open one of the most shocking sagas in motion picture history..."
"'Battle Royale' is my favorite movie of the last 20 years," said director Quentin Tarantino. "I wish I had made this movie.

Film producer Fritz Manes has died at the age of 79.
He lost his battle with lung and brain cancer in Sherman Oaks, California last month.
Manes was born in Oakland in 1932 and went on to attend Piedmont Junior High School with veteran actor/director Clint Eastwood. He then served in the Korean War with the U.S. Marines and was awarded the prestigious Purple Heart for his efforts.
Manes later reunited with the Dirty Harry star and produced many of Eastwood's films, including Any Which Way You Can, Escape from Alcatraz, and Tightrope, before the two had a falling out over the making of Heartbreak Ridge in 1986.
He ultimately created his own production company, Sundancer, and was a member of the California Film Commission.

Alexa Gonzalez, 12, was spotted penning a message to her friends in green, erasable marker on her table during a Spanish lesson, BBC News reports. Gonzalez, who had written "I love my friends Abby and Faith", was "dragged" to the dean's office and the police were called. She was later taken out of Junior High School 190 in Queens in handcuffs and was held at a local school precinct for hours. Gonzalez and her mother are now pursuing legal action against the police and education departments in New York City for excessive use of force and violation of her rights.
