The Long Game released April 12, 2024.
Dennis Quaid is a man I grew up with. As a child I watched his films on repeat with a select few being near weekly viewings. In a way, he was my unconventional babysitter. Through Jaws 3D, Inner Space, Enemy Mine and Dragonheart I was whisked away to magical lands and instilled with a lifelong fear of sharks that haunts me to this day. So, when I was given the opportunity to speak with him about the positively charming The Long Game, I jumped at the chance.
Based on the novel Mustang Miracle, the film tells the true story of the San Filipe Mustangs. They were a group of Mexican-American teenagers in the 1950’s who stood up to racism through their love for the sport of Golf. Dennis Quaid plays the team’s coach, Frank Mitchell. You can check out my review of the film here.

"Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom" is the most contentious of the first three "Indiana Jones" movies. Director Steven Spielberg's filmmaking instincts are sharp as ever, as is Harrison Ford's charisma, and even before the mine tunnel sequence, the film moves like a roller coaster in the best way possible.
But in aping early 20th-century pulp, the film inherits their exoticized distortions of non-American cultures. "Temple of Doom" is mostly set in British-occupied India, but the villains are not these colonizers. No, Indy and co. face off against an indigenous threat: the vicious Thuggee cult that enslaves children and makes human sacrifices to the Hindu god Kali. I'm admittedly not an expert on Indian culture (nor were the writers of the movie), so I'll defer to one who is; Indian-Canadian writer Saffron Maeve has taken the film to task over at Little White Lies. Otherwise, I'll let...

Iron straps bind an innocent security guard to a chair. He writhes and screams as a contraption comes near his face, a Pov shot revealing buzzing blades, grinding gears, and a set of glowing red eyes. The security guard scrambles to set himself free, trying to control his hyperventilating long enough to shake loose one of the restraints. But it’s no good. The contraption settles on his face, drowning his screams under a mechanical mask.
No, I’m not describing one of Jigsaw’s new traps in Saw X. That movie does not shy away from eyeball-sucking vacuums or bowls of brain matter, befitting the franchise’s hard-r reputation. Pete Kozachik, the Oscar-nominated visual effects supervisor behind “The Nightmare Before Christmas,” “Corpse Bride,” “James and the Giant Peach” and others, has died. He was 72 years old.
Kvoa News Tucson first reported the news, commemorating Kozachik and sending condolences to his family, including brother Steve, the Arizona city’s councilman and vice mayor. Pete died Sept. 12 after suffering complications due to aphasia and primary progressive aphasia.
Kozachik received an Oscar nomination for his work on Tim Burton’s stop-motion holiday classic, “The Nightmare Before Christmas.” Besides the Henry Selick-directed 1993 animated film that combines Halloween and Christmas, he also worked on films like “Honey, I Shrunk the Kids” and “The Matrix.”
“Dreamscape” (1984) starring Dennis Quaid launched the visual artist’s film career. He worked as visual effects camera operator on “Howard the Duck” (1986), and he went on to contribute to “Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home,” “Innerspace,” “Willow,” “Ghostbusters II,...

Pete Kozachik, a visual effects and stop-motion artist whose work on acclaimed animated films by Tim Burton, Henry Selick and others brought recognition and an Oscar nomination, died Sept. 12 at his California home in the Bay Area following a years-long battle with aphasia and primary progressive aphasia. His death was first announced on Tucson’s NBC affiliate station Kvoa. Kozachik attended high school and college in Tucson, and his brother Steve Kozachik is vice mayor of the city.

There’s this theory out there that annoys most Trekkies, being that, of the films, only the even-numbered entries are good. This stems mainly from the fact that everyone remembers Star Trek V: The Final Frontier as being the worst movie of the series and ignores that Star Trek: The Motion Picture – while divisive – was a hit, and so was The Search for Spock. However, Star Trek V: The Final Frontier is indeed a bad Star Trek movie, and in this episode of Revisited, we’re going to look at exactly what went wrong with something that was clearly a passion project for its star and director, William Shatner.
Jump back to 1986, and Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home was a significant hit. It was the highest-grossing movie in the franchise and earned critical raves. People that didn’t even like Star Trek were down with this earth-bound adventure of the crew of the U.

Once considered a showcase committed to hybrid documentaries, the Cph:forum in Copenhagen has steadily transformed into a four-day event that presents a variety of topics, genres and artistic approaches from a diverse group of filmmakers. While the carefully curated market isn’t fazed by experimental approaches to the form, the industry event also champions traditional docu projects and provides a prominent platform for veteran, mid-career and newbie directors and producers.
This year, the financing and co-production event, taking place in the middle of the 20th edition of the Cph:dox documentary film festival, will feature 34 international projects selected from a record number 478 submissions. According to artistic director of Cph:dox Niklas Engstrom, the films selected to participate in the Forum didn’t need to meet a specific criteria, but each project is “important artistically, socially, politically, and culturally.”
Tereza Simikova, head of industry and training at Cph:dox, adds: “We don’t have...

New feature documentaries from Honeyland director Ljubomir Stefanov and Ascension filmmaker Jessica Kingdon are among the 33 projects selected for Cph:Forum, the financing and co-production market of Copenhagen International Documentary Film Festival.
Macedonian filmmaker Stefanov is presenting House of Earth, about a transgender sex worker who returns to her Roma community after 30 years on the run, only to be torn between her biological kin and her chosen queer family. The Macedonian-us co-production is produced by Maya E. Rudolph and Sarah D’hanens, and is looking for €405,000 funding to supplement its €45,000 in place from Louverture Films and private equity.

Riverdale Season 6 Episode 8
“Thus began the battle for Riverdale’s soul…”
With Hiram Lodge well and truly dead (for now at least), Riverdale‘s search for a new Big Bad has yielded the arrival of Percival Pickens (Chris O’Shea), a mysterious stranger who has family ties to one of the town’s darkest periods. After initially showing up two weeks ago looking to buy the Andrews house — an offer which Archie refused with a stern “no way, bro” — Percival has been sniffing around town, trying to figure out the interpersonal relationships of the townspeople and pretty much figuring out right away all the shady shit that goes on in this supposedly ideal community.
He pens an anonymous essay for the Riverdale Choice in which he accurately calls the town out on its rampant gang and violence problem, intolerance, lack of culture and general Riverdaleness. This...

Always found it quite ironic that when Image Comics was founded, its aim was to out-Marvel Marvel. Sure, there was the important issue of creators rights and giving people more creative freedom, but the main idea was to earn the money Marvel was earning and put more of it into the pockets of the writers and artists. it was always for me more a business decision than anything else. Then, somewhere along the way, Image became the place to go if you had a unique idea, a specific vision. Prior to that, Dark Horse Comics had been the go to place, but as they went all-in on licensing publishing, Image became the place to take new ideas. They still are. Image are easily the best publisher in terms of the range of genres and of creators, and...

They say there’s nothing new under the sun and that Hollywood is bereft of fresh ideas. But sometimes truly innovative films are unfairly accused of being derivative just because they put a new twist on an age old concept. Such is the case with Christopher Nolan’s 2010 film Inception, which is receiving fresh scrutiny now that it’s streaming on Netflix for longtime fans as well as those who missed it in theaters the first time around.
Sometimes the chronology of inspiration doesn’t quite line up as neatly as skeptics would like to think. Even though Inception was released in 2010, Nolan had presented a treatment to Warner Bros. about “dream stealers” in 2002 before shelving it to work on other projects. With that in mind, could the following properties have inspired the Academy Award winning film as some have theorized, and if not, how else could the similarities be explained?...

With more than 160 acting credits to his name (according to IMDb), including one of the most iconic horror movie characters of all time, Max von Sydow was one of the most prolific actors of his or any other generation, and we're deeply sad to report that the great actor has passed away at the age of 90.
According to multiple reports, including The Hollywood Reporter, Sydow passed away in his Provence, France home on Sunday, March 8th. His wife, Catherine von Sydow, confirmed his passing, saying (via THR), "It's with a broken heart and with infinite sadness that we have the extreme pain of announcing the departure of Max Von Sydow on March 8, 2020."
A dynamic performer, Sydow brought roomfuls of characters to life over an acting career that included eight decades, with his first acting credit being 1949's Only a Mother.

For frequent moviegoers, MoviePass was a godsend: For $10 a month, the service offered virtually unlimited tickets at a wide array of theaters, potentially saving the most dedicated cinephiles hundreds. But it proved too good to be true when the service shut down in the fall after a slow death. Luckily, MoviePass showed exhibitors there was abundant appetite for bringing the subscription model to cinemas.
The three largest chains in the U.S. — AMC, Regal, and Cinemark — all have their own movie ticket subscription services, while Alamo Drafthouse and Showcase Cinemas are among the smaller chains with their own offerings. None equal the steal of erstwhile MoviePass, but with varying price points and benefits, this second generation of services offers a flavor for every moviegoer, and plenty of chances to save money.
The choices can be overwhelming. Some services are better for people who watch a lot of 3D or IMAX movies.

“Do you want to ride a dragon?” … That’s the question the Dreamscape Immersive creative team asked themselves when brainstorming ideas for Vr experience based on the “How to Train Your Dragon” film franchise. And the resounding answer was “Yes!”
“It was both a business opportunity with Universal, but also you have to identify what about an idea makes it uniquely suited to Dreamscape,” co-founder and chairman Walter Parkes told TheWrap. “Since we were interested in flying, we were excited about rendering our players as animated characters in a beautiful CG world as opposed to trying to mimic the real world.”
Thus, the “DreamWorks Dragons Flight Academy” was hatched and the inaugural flight took to the air last week at Dreamscape’s flagship location in Westfield Century City in Los Angeles.

South East Asian filmmakers, Mouly Surya, Yeo Siew Hua and Anucha Boonyawatana have received commissions to direct short movies for the Singapore International Film Festival.
Although other film festivals in Asia including Tokyo and Jeonju have previously ventured into production, it is a first for the Sgiff. It gave the trio the topic ‘celebration’ to work with.
Yeo, director of 2018 Locarno Winner “A Land Imagined,” delivered “Incantation,” an exploration of the age-old rituals of ancient spells, spirits and the idea of resurrection during Hungry Ghost Festival. Indonesian musician turned filmmaker Surya (“Marlina the Murderer in Four Acts”), shot “Something Old, New, Borrowed and Blue,” a look at gender roles in today’s society told through the intimate interactions between a mother and a bride-to-be at a traditional wedding procession. Thailand’s Boonyawatana (“Malila: The Farewell Flower”) hatched “Not A Time to Celebrate,” a light-hearted and cheeky take on the rewards and harsh reality of filmmaking.

The Los Angeles Chargers play their final preseason game against the San Francisco 49ers on Thursday night, but before they head north to Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, California, some of the players overcame far more daunting challenges than Jimmy Garoppolo and the Niners.
We’re pretty sure the 49ers — or any NFL team — don’t have Alien Zoo monsters, blue whales or Snake Gods on their starting lineups like the Chargers faced when they were immersed in the virtual reality world of Dreamscape Immersive at Westfield Century City in Los Angeles.
Players Austin Ekeler, Brant Weiss, Michael Davis, Antoine Cason, Larry Allen, Jr. and Larry English, along with president of Business Operations A.G. Spanos, who’s father Dean owns the team, took part in three original Vr experiences ahead of the 2019 NFL season kickoff and got far more than they bargained for.

Since the first Dreamscape Immersive storefront opened at a Los Angeles-area mall a month ago, showtimes have sold out. Dreamscape prefers to call them “departure times.”
The Westfield Century City mall location is Dreamscape’s first foray into a theatrical-like virtual reality experience, and the company plans to expand in the first half of 2019. Its lobby — Dreamscape calls it a “departure lounge” — occupies a space with no special advertising beyond social media and word of mouth.
Dreamscape hopes the buzz will only grow as investors like Steven Spielberg, Hollywood studios and other filmmakers continue to support Dreamscape’s dedication to virtual reality storytelling.

“We’re not a technology company. A lot of Vr companies are technologists or gamers first, but we’re literally storytellers first,” Dreamscape Immersive CEO Bruce Vaughn told TheWrap.

Dreamscape Immersive, the location-based Vr startup backed by some of Hollywood’s heaviest hitters, will open its first venue this month at the Westfield Century City mall.
The opening marks the start of a period of expansion that will bring four stand-alone and in-theatre Vr experiences to the Dallas/Ft. Worth and the New York/New Jersey metropolitan areas, and to Columbus, Ohio.
Dreamscape’s partner, AMC Theatres, plans to open these Vr experiences in mid 2019.
“What sets Dreamscape Vr apart from all others are the magical minds responsible for crafting such captivating, immersive experiences, the likes of which has never been seen before,” AMC Entertainment CEO Adam Aron said in a statement.
Dreamscape’s founders draw from their backgrounds in filmmaking and theme park attractions to offer virtual reality experiences that marry the best of both forms of entertainment.

Saban Films has made one of the first acquisitions of this year’s Toronto International Film Festival, buying the rights to the sexual abuse drama “Romans” starring Orlando Bloom, the studio announced Thursday.
Directed by Ludwig and Paul Shammasian, the film stars Bloom as a man struggling to cope with the sexual abuse he suffered as a child at the hands of a priest, and who now has the opportunity to demolish the church where his abuse occurred.
The drama is written by Geoff Thompson, who previously worked with the Shammasians on “The Pyramid Texts,” and produced by Jasper Graham of Dreamscape along with James Harris and Mark Lane of The Fyzz Facility and Sheetal Vinod Talwar of Vistaar Film Fund, in association with Zee International.

Our latest round-up of horror and genre DVDs and Blu-rays...
So: with season two of Stranger Things fast approaching, a remake of Stephen King’s It set to mildly trouble a whole new generation and, erm, the on-going threat of nuclear armageddon, it seems everything eighties is 'in' at the moment. And, you know what? That surely must include Dennis Quaid, right? Well, maybe not, unless you count this year’s canine reincarnation/multiple hound-homicide horror A Dog’s Purpose, which we don’t in these parts. Anyway, Quaid’s back in Blu-ray form with the recent repackaging of his 1984 quirky fantasy thriller Dreamscape.
Nicely sandwiched between the release of Jaws 3-D and Enemy Mine, surely two of the most Quaidessential (sorry) films of the decade, Dreamscape sees our hero take on the mantle of a cheaper Harrison Ford, burdened with psychic powers that he must use...

It’s the question that has haunted humankind, plagued our philosophers, and inspired countless works of art, intellect, and science, all while inspiring our greatest minds to look beyond the rational world: Why can’t we make up our minds about remakes? Actually, the question is, “What happens to you after you die?,” but right now we’re more curious about the status of remakes. We all bemoan them on a regular basis, but they make for some of our favorite films, and we all have at least one story we’d love to see get a remake. (Why, yes, we are talking about the 1984 Dennis Quaid thriller Dreamscape.) And now, Flatliners enters the remake world, with the Ellen Page-starring 2017 version of the old Kiefer Sutherland/Julia Roberts hit. (Sutherland even shows up in this one to lend his grizzled seal of approval.)

Stop me if you’ve heard this one: a man with special abilities to enter the dreams of sleeping clients and influence their subconsciouses is hired by a high-profile client to investigate his dreams and find out important information, but encounters pushback both external and internal that could lead to him never being able to escape the dream world. In 1984, a weird film called Dreamscape hit theaters. Starring Dennis Quaid as Alex Gardner and Kate Capshaw as Jane DeVries, this film is about a man with extraordinary powers of the mind. He's reluctantly brought in to assist on a secret university and government project --- his task is to enter the dreams of others in Rem sleep. This is akin to lucid dreaming, but with an astral projection twist. The problem is, Alex uncovers a shady conspiracy to assasinate the president and must fight back against the men in black --- or die trying. Upon its release, Dreamscape was a sleeper. It's found a cult following now that it's been out on "home video" forever, and Scream Factory has given this film the royal treatment. Dreamscape was...

Without question, being a stepparent can be rough. It’s a balancing act between wanting what’s best for the child, and the need to ingratiate oneself and hopefully, earn and obtain love. This is a tightrope that Jerry Blake (Terry O’Quinn) has no interest in walking – if he can’t implement his perfect family plan, he switches policies in the most violent way possible. Welcome to the world of The Stepfather (1987), a pretty good thriller elevated to classic status due to a legendary performance by O’Quinn.
And while Jerry Blake has little patience for deviation from his ideals, so too do Henry Morrison and Bill Hodgkins – all identities that our stepdad creates in his twisted pursuit of perfection. (If at first you don’t succeed, kill and kill again.) The Stepfather proves that home is where the hurt is.

Director Greydon Clark is not a name thrown around a lot. Horror fans will know him (probably) for 1977’s Satan’s Cheerleaders. The rest of filmdom need not apply. However, his best film, Without Warning (1980), would end up resonating in such a way as to inspire Predator (1987), Schwarzenegger’s Alien in the Jungle box office smash. And when I say inspire, I mean they stole the concept. But what Without Warning lacks in testosterone and Hollywood bankrolls, it makes up in B movie charm and a winsome personality. You can’t help but fall in love with the damn thing.
Released by Filmways Pictures in New York, in September 1980, Without Warning (Aka It Came…Without Warning) had a scattered release – dribs and drabs in smaller markets, and don’t forget Finland (who could?). Made for a meager $150,000 Us the film was given a real dine and dash release, I’m...

The year that gave us Gremlins, Ghostbusters and The Temple Of Doom also gave us these 20 underappreciated movies...
It's been said that 1984 was a vintage year for movies, and looking back, it's easy to see why. The likes of Ghostbusters and Gremlins served up comedy, action and the macabre in equal measure. James Cameron's The Terminator cemented Arnold Schwarzenegger's star status and gave us one of the greatest sci-fi action movies of the decade.
This was also the year where the Coen brothers made their screen debut with the stunning thriller Blood Simple, and when the Zucker brothers followed up Airplane! with the equally hilarious Top Secret! And we still haven't even mentioned Beverly Hills Cop, This Is Spinal Tap, The Karate Kid, Indiana Jones And The Temple Of Doom and the unexpectedly successful romantic comedy, Splash. Then there was Milos Forman's sumptuous period drama Amadeus, which...

In honor of the 2014 summer movie season, Team HitFix will be delivering a mini-series of articles flashing back to key summers from years past. There will be one each month, diving into the marquee events of the era, their impact on the writer and their implications on today's multiplex culture. We continue today with a look back at the summer of 1984. I turned 14 on May 26, 1984, just as the summer movie season was getting started. These days, the summer movie season seems to begin in mid-March, and I think it's because studios want real estate that they can own. And it feels like the appetite for event films is something the audience has year-round now, so if you're able to make something that excites the audience, why not find a place for it where it's not going head to head with all the other giant event films of the year? For the purposes of this piece,...

If you've seen any of the marketing materials for the gleefully insane new horror movie Nurse 3D, then you probably know what you're in for: weird sex, graphic violence, and several familiar actors running through familiar motions before ending up gored on a rock or beheaded with a bone-saw. This is nothing resembling a deep, intellectual, or insightful horror flick. Nurse 3D is, however, quite a bit of good, gruesome fun if you enjoy "body count" horror combined with a basic but serviceable plot yanked straight out of Single White Female.
Paz de la Huerta plays a psychotic nurse who does fine work during the day, but kills philandering men at night. Given the gal's sinful body and amorous attitude, she doesn't have much trouble finding victims. But bloodthirsty Abby's activities are interrupted with the arrival of an adorable new nurse (Katrina Bowden), which kicks off a standard (but never...

The big names in horror are often recognized by both the genre community and mainstream entertainment culture, showered with accolades by horror fans and film critics alike. Directors like John Carpenter, Tobe Hooper, and Wes Craven have secured their place in film history, but many more talented directors go largely unsung for their hard work and noteworthy contributions to the genre. To remedy that, we recently kicked off a recurring segment that gives much-needed credit to those groundbreaking horror filmmakers who aren’t always given the praise they deserve. [You can check out part one here and part two here.] Since the first two installments proved popular, we're back with another round, and this time we present not five, but six more of our favorite underrated genre film directors. Mike Mendez Director of The Gravedancers and Big Ass Spider, Mendez and frequent collaborator Dave Parker (Coldwater, The Hills Run Red) helped to inspire the popular Showtime series Masters of Horror, but...

A lot of our favorite genre films are categorized explicitly as horror. Films like Halloween or Friday the 13th fit pretty neatly under the horror heading. However, there are a lot of quality horror titles that are more readily classified as science fiction or thriller than horror. There are myriad reasons why films with obvious horror overtones are marketed and classified as something other than horror: horror pictures often do lower box office number than sci-fi and thriller films; also, horror titles generally appeal to more of a niche audience, so studios appear to favor leveraging the thriller or science fiction elements of a film in order to attempt to interest a larger audience.
In the name of appropriate classification and equitable marketing practices we are spotlighting five films that aren’t always explicitly categorized as horror but we fondly regard as such.

It’s that wonderful, frightful, cool and creepy time of year again, when everything including the leaves on the trees are dying and our taste buds are craving sugary sweets and pies made from the guts of our jack-o-lanterns. It’s October, which means Halloween is nearly upon us! Get you costumes completed, your home haunts constructed and your candy collected for trick’r treaters, because you have to make time to watch some of the scariest movies this time of year.
In an effort to assist you in your cinematic scare-fest, we’ve come up with a list of the scariest movies to watch on Halloween… with one caveat. We have excluded virtually all “slasher” flicks. Why? Well, let’s just say we all know them, we all love them on some level, but really… don’t we all want something more in our scary movies? In honor of...

This is the first trailer and poster for Mindscape starring Mark Strong, Taissa Farmiga and Brian Cox, and an intriguing one at that. Jorge Dorado directs the thriller written by Guy Holmes and Martha Holmes, which at this time, has no Stateside release date. Folks in Spain however, can catch the film on October 31st. What I do like about this poster is that the actor names actually line up with the actor's faces. It's truly annoying when they try observe casting order but design the poster with the names unmatched. In Mindscape, a man who has the ability to enter peoples' memories, takes on the case of a brilliant, troubled sixteen-year-old girl in order to find out if she's a socioppath of a victim of trauma. The title reminds me a bit of Dreamscape, a similarly titled film of 1984 starring Dennis Quaid who tried to save the Us president who's trapped inside a dreamworld,...
