It’s hard to believe now, but it took until 1996 for the broadcast networks to finally hire their first-ever female entertainment president, when ABC recruited Jamie Tarses away from NBC to take the job. There had been a handful of other women in powerful slots, including Lucie Salhany, who was briefly chair of the Fox Broadcasting Co. before launching Upn. But until streaming upended the business, “entertainment president” was the most visible, and arguably the most important, leadership job at a network. And until Tarses, it had been all men.
Tarses’ rise at ABC coincided with the start of my career as a cub reporter, covering the network TV business in Los Angeles, and one of my first duties was to chronicle the tenure of the young trailblazer. But from the start, Tarses was faced with many in Hollywood looking to tear her down — be it rivals jealous of her age,...

Jamie Tarses, one of the most dynamic television executives of her era who helped build NBC’s Must-See TV lineup and went on to become the first woman to lead a Big Three network programming division, died Monday following complications from a cardiac event last fall, according to Tarses’ family. She was 56.
Tarses was born into the industry as the daughter of famed comedy writer-producer Jay Tarses. As a network executive, she made a big splash at NBC in the early 1990s, developing “Friends” and “Mad About You.” She made headlines when she moved over to ABC Entertainment as president during a turbulent era for the network and then-new parent company, Disney.
By age 32, Tarses was the first woman to head a network entertainment division — and one of the youngest execs ever to lead a Big Three — in her role as ABC Entertainment president from 1996 to 1999. During her tenure, she...

This prolonged period of self-isolation has afforded TV addicts the opportunity to revisit some of their favorite shows — or at least those that happen to be available. Because while free and paid services offer a vast array of past and present programming, countless classic series are nowhere to be found in the streaming era.
Of the 18 top-rated scripted series since 1970, only half of them are readily available to binge in their entirety: The Cosby Show (on Amazon Prime), Cheers (on Amazon Prime, CBS All Access, Hulu and Netflix), CSI: Crime Scene Investigation (on Hulu), Dallas (free on IMDbTV), Desperate Housewives...

Just as in those 1970s-era Reese’s peanut-butter cups commercials — “You got peanut butter on my chocolate!” “You got chocolate in my peanut butter!” — comedy and drama are commingling more than ever in the age of peak TV. But such blurring of lines can cause complications when it comes to pitching and marketing series, let alone competing in more traditionally defined Emmy categories.
Streaming service Amazon used to divide its development teams into half-hour and hour-long format groups, rather than by genre. This is how comedy co-heads Ryan Andolina and Gina Kwon came to develop the dramatic “Homecoming,” a multi time-period thriller about an experimental treatment program for soldiers with Ptsd, based on Micah Bloomberg and Eli Horowitz’s podcast of the same name.

The hour-long comedy-drama or "dramedy" has been a thing since at least the 1980s series, The Days and Nights of Molly Dodd. Far more rare is the half-hour drama, but it does exist. This spring, Starz is introducing two such TV series, on Sunday, May 6, 2018 at a time Tba. The Vida TV show stars Mishel Prada and Melissa Barrera as two Mexican-American sisters from La's Eastside. Meanwhile, the Sweetbitter TV series stars Ella Purnell as Tess, a young woman who goes to New York City, for a fresh start. Read More…...

If you were a TV critic from 1956 to 1976, you would have witnessed some big changes in the business: the rise and fall of the Western as the dominant primetime genre, or the color TV boom, or CBS' shift from silly rural comedies to socially conscious ones like All in the Family and M*A*S*H. If you covered the beat from 1976 to 1996, you would have written about Hill Street Blues and its many imitators, the classic years of SNL, and the early days of original cable programming. Almost any 20-year span would give you a front row seat to enormous artistic and technological change. As of this week, I've been professionally writing about television for exactly 20 years(*), and it's safe to say that the only two-decade period that featured a more radical transformation in how television was made and consumed would be back when the medium was first introduced into America's living rooms.

Actor George Gaynes died Monday, February 15, 2016. TV fans will remember Gaynes as the curmudgeonly foster and eventually adoptive father, Henry Warnimont, on the Punky Brewster TV series. Punky Brewster, along with Silver Spoons, was famously cancelled by NBC in 1986, only to be revived in first-run syndication through 1988. Gaynes and Soleil Moon Frye also voiced their characters on the animated Punky Brewster TV series, sometimes referred to as It's Punky Brewster.
The New York Times confirmed Gaynes passed away at daughter Iya Gaynes Falcone Brown's North Bend, Washington home. In addition to his daughter and her family, Gaynes leaves behind his wife of more than 62 years, actress Allyn Ann McLerie, a regular on The Days and Nights of Molly Dodd. Entourage really gets rolling in Episode 3, writes Tim Appelo: In Entourage’s third episode, Season 7 hits its stride. Though it’s named “Dramedy,” after that odd comedy/drama blend exemplified by 1987’s addictively irritating “The Days and Nights of Molly Dodd” (about an Australopithecus Ally McBeal, Blair Brown), that’s just because the screenwriter who looks like he’s going to save Johnny Drama’s sagging career is an Emmy-hogging relic of that era. The once-rich writer lost so much on the market, Lloyd and E lured him out of early retirement to write some pages to unleash Drama’s inner clown. We first discussed the new Broadway musical version of The Addams Family back in June 2007. Though the creators said that they intended to base it on the New Yorker cartoons, there are bound to be lots similarities to the classic TV show.
As expected, Nathan Lane (The Days and Nights of Molly Dodd) is playing creepy patriarch Gomez and Bebe Neuwirth (Cheers) is embodying his ever-enchanting wife, Morticia.
Rounding out the family are Kevin Chamberlain (Heroes) as Uncle Fester, Jackie Hoffman (Dilbert) as Grandma, Adam Riegler as son Puglsey, Krysta Rodriguez as daughter Wednesday, and Zachary James as Lurch, the giant butler.
The show is currently playing in Chicago for its out-of-town premiere and is expected to kick off its Broadway run on March 2nd.

It's always interesting when you've been hearing about a series for years and then finally sit down to watch it. All the little pieces and pop references of Ally McBeal are starting to come together, like Fishisms, The Biscuit, dancing babies and Vonda Shepard. I have seen the light. Well, at least season one of the light.
I mentioned in my preview last week that Ally McBeal seems like a mix of The Days and Nights of Molly Dodd and My World and Welcome To It. Having reached the end of season one, I still feel that way, with maybe a little Buffy the Vampire Slayer thrown in (hey, don't throw things at me, Ally looks like Buffy).
Molly Dodd because Ally is funny, desperate, strong and cute. My World because of all her fantasies, though not always in cartoon form as was the case with John Monroe / James Thurber.

I'm watching season one of Ally McBeal for Jane After Dark this week, and will give a full review this weekend. But I have to say, I'm just a few episodes in, and I'm already hooked. It's a weird blend of The Days and Nights of Molly Dodd and My World and Welcome To It.
And it's very weird seeing Calista Flockhart, whom I mainly know from Brothers & Sisters, and all of her co-stars, whom I know from other current shows, on Ally McBeal. What's even more amazing is all of the musicians featured on this show: Elton John, Tina Turner, Mariah Carey, Al Green, and many more.

Bernie Brillstein, the prolific talent agent, manager, and producer who was a major force in the Hollywood industry, died Thursday night in Los Angeles of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease; he was 77. A man who lived the quintessential Hollywood success story, Brillstein started out in the mail room of the William Morris Agency back in 1956 and worked his way up the ladder, helping package numerous film and television deals and guiding the careers of a number of actors and other creative professionals. Among his early success stories were the launch of Saturday Night Live and the careers of many of its comedians, Jim Henson and The Muppet Show, the hit comedy Ghost Busters, and acclaimed 80s TV shows such as The Days and Nights of Molly Dodd and It's Garry Shandling's Show. With Brad Grey (who later became head of Paramount Pictures), Brillstein formed the powerful management company Brillstein-Grey, which was renamed Brillstein Enetertainment Partners in 2007. In 1999, Brillstein chronicled his adventures in Hollywood with the memoir Where Did I Go Right? -- You're No One in Hollywood Unless Someone Wants You Dead. He is survived by his wife, Carrie, three sons, and two daughters.
