Ziegfeld Girls (Leslie Flesner and Afra Hines) warn Fanny Brice (Beanie Feldstein) about Nicky Arnstein (Ramin Karimloo) Photo: Matthew Murphy, 2022
Not only is Ramin Karimloo co-starring with Beanie Feldstein, Jared Grimes (Tony nominated for his Eddie Ryan), and Jane Lynch in the Broadway revival of Funny Girl, directed by Michael Mayer, with revisions by Harvey Fierstein, he has two movies coming out. Starring opposite Samantha Barks in Nick Winston’s Tomorrow Morning, screenplay by Laurence Mark Wythe and in Isaac Hirotsu Woofter’s Bound.
Ramin Karimloo with Anne-Katrin Titze: “When Michael offered me Nicky Arnstein in 2019, I had just finished singing with Barbra Streisand in London in Hyde Park.”
Ramin told me that Marlon Brando’s performance with Al Pacino and Robert De Niro in Francis Ford Coppola’s The Godfather, Antonio Banderas in Arne Glimcher’s The Mambo Kings, and Kathy Bates in anything mean a great deal to him.

Among the chrome skyscrapers and beckoning show lights in Downtown Miami stands The Freedom Tower, a government building with a distinctive Mediterranean flair that processed Cuban refugees who fled the nearby Caribbean nation to pass the time between Fidel Castro and democracy.
Cuban-born actor Yul Vázquez was one of those thousands of exiles who found themselves in that immigrant wave’s Ellis Island, waiting for rations of powdered milk, cans of Spam and surplus eggs, holding his mother’s hand next to his sister.
Everyone in that tower thought the situation was temporary. That was in 1971. Fifty years have passed, and Vázquez has kept himself occupied, amassing over 60 combined roles in movies, television and theater.
“People say to me, ‘Yul, you never stop working!’ I always tell people that I have that Cuban exile mentality,” he told Variety. “My mother got here with two kids that didn’t speak English,...

Jaime Camil is a familiar face to many, probably best known for his outlandish and outstanding portrayal of Rogelio De La Vega, Jane's father, on Jane the Virgin.
But if you didn't catch any of his 99 episodes of that show, close your eyes and let yourself be transported by his voice, which is featured in animated shows on both TV and cinema, from the rebooted Ducktales to The Secret Life of Pets.
Currently, Camil is causing hearts to flutter on Apple TV+'s musical sensation Schmigadoon! as the sultry, flawed, but suddenly infatuated Doc Lopez.
Speaking with Camil via Internet on a recent virtual press day, we asked about how he felt about having a role written specifically with him in mind.
"Oh my god, I learned that later. His kindness and how generous he is is just beyond belief.

Music is at the heart of director Sergio Navarretta’s “The Cuban,” set for a limited theatrical release July 31. In the movie, pre-med student Mina, played by Ana Golja (“Degrassi”), is tasked with caring for Luis, portrayed by Louis Gossett Jr., who is struggling with Alzheimer’s and has retreated into himself. As she feeds him, she tells him of her dreams of being a musician and hums tunes from her childhood in Afghanistan. Luis sparks to the songs, and begins to come out of his shell.
Navarretta points to “The Mambo Kings” as an inspiration for his film, saying he was so moved by the music in that 1992 movie, about a pair of brothers who flee Havana for New York in the ’50s, that he wanted to make a picture with music as its focal point. His choice to create that sound was Grammy Award-nominated Cuban jazz artist Hilario Durán.

Tie Me Up! Tie Me Down! Courtesy of PhotofestAntonio Banderas is one of those screen presences who just seems to know. Preternaturally wised-up, his large liquid eyes are his gift, ever watchful and secretive. It’s like he was born knowing; he’s never not been on the make or aware of his own charms. In his decades-long collaboration with Spanish filmmaker Pedro Almodóvar, he has been an infatuated stalker, a vengeance-driven plastic surgeon, and an escaped convict. His characters are often driven in equal measure by obsessive love and violent impulse; even as a young man, he rarely portrayed an innocent. With his inky, slicked hair, olive skin, and nobly handsome profile, the young Banderas sometimes looked like a sketch of a 1930s gigolo; you could easily imagine him as a homicidal pool boy or sexually fluid manipulator in a film noir. His good looks were not just fulsome...

Before the advent of cell phones, communication was so limited; you either had to telephone someone (on a landline no less), or god forbid, talk to them in person (brrr). Phones were also trotted out as a very effective trope for horror; the calls started coming from inside the house, pay phone booths were firing up, and prank calls led to all kinds of mayhem. That last ditty is where we’re headed today with I Saw What You Did (1988), an effective TV teen horror that is a remake of a same-named William Castle joint from ’65, this time co-headlined by a very young Shawnee Smith and Tammy Lauren.
Originally shown on May 20th as a CBS Friday Movie, I Saw was up against Mr. Belvedere on ABC and Miami Vice on NBC, but it held a unique appeal for teenage girls (or anyone else for that matter) looking for some thrills on a Friday night.

This year Antonio Banderas could win his first Emmy for “Genius: Picasso.” He stars in the second season of NatGeo’s anthology series as famed Spanish surrealist painter Pablo Picasso. Banderas previously competed for Best Movie/Mini Actor for “And Starring Pancho Villa as Himself” in 2004. But of course, most of Banderas’ best known work has been in film, not television. Chicago – Actor Frank Grillo is on the rise, as evidenced from his high profile supporting role in Marvel Studios “Captain America: Civil War” and portraying Sgt. Barnes in “The Purge” series of horror films. He recently has partnered in a production company (WarParty Films) and is the title character in their debut movie “Wheelman,” which is distributed and available now on Netflix, as part of their film group.
The “Wheelman” is also the debut film for writer/director Jeremy Rush, and currently has an 88% favorability rating on Rotten Tomatoes. In this tense thriller, Grillo portrays a getaway driver who is double crossed, and suddenly has to protect his family from retribution. The film’s scenes takes place mostly in the vehicles that the Wheelman drives – similar to the movie “Locke” from 2013 – and features Grillo at his action star best.

Pulitzer prize-winning author Oscar Hijuelos died on Saturday when he had a heart attack while playing tennis, his agent confirmed to the Associated Press. Hijuelos, a Cuban-American who was born and raised in New York, won his fiction Pulitzer for The Mambo Kings Play Songs of Love, which followed a pair of musician brothers from Havana to New York. He was the first Hispanic writer to win the Pulitzer fiction prize, and the book was turned into a movie and almost became a musical. It remains Hijuelos's most well-known work, though he wrote several other novels plus a memoir, Thoughts Without Cigarettes. Hijuelos is survived by his wife, Lori Marie Carlson.

Tom Noonan as Francis Dollarhyde in Manhunter (Michael Mann, 1986, USA):
Noonan is absolutely incredible as a serial murderer in this underrated adaptation of Thomas Harris’ novel Red Dragon. With all respect to the talented but miscast actors involved in Brett Ratner’s 2002 adaptation Red Dragon (USA), with the exception of Anthony Hopkins as Hannibal Lecter, the acting in this earlier, superior version of the book exists on a much higher level. Most notably, there’s nothing resembling a comparison between Noonan’s Francis Dollarhyde and Ralph Fiennes’ interpretation. Slowly, the entertainment industry is taking notice that Latinos are a demographic force to be taken seriously.
In baby steps, Hollywood seems to be moving away from the days when the principal roles available to Latinos were either those of the sultry femme fatale or the dark-haired, language-mangling villain.
For Salma Hayek and Antonio Banderas, their star power has delivered them to the point where their heavily-accented voices alone are being relied on to carry a film.
Case in point: "Puss in Boots," the sixth collaboration by the Mexican and Spanish heartthrobs, premiers in the United States Friday. It is their first animated film together.
Banderas, who arrived in the United States two decades ago, said that Hollywood -- like like society as a whole -- has gradually become more accepting of the contributions of Latinos, Collider.com reported:

Antonio Banderas never would have thought a decade ago that he was going to still be playing Puss in Boots after his first appearance in Shrek 2. If you told him Puss would have his own movie, Banderas would have said you were crazy. Meanwhile, Salma Hayek, as a mother to a young daughter, relished in the idea of playing an animated cat who torments, then teams up with Puss and Humpty Dumpty (Zack Galifianakis) to steal magic beans from Jack and Jill (Billy Bob Thornton and Amy Sedaris).
Banderas and Hayek recently spoke with Movie Fanatic about the Puss in Boots phenomenon and how now that our favorite animated cat has his own film, it’s time for the spotlight to shine on the fine feline of the Shrek franchise.

Pedro Almodóvar made him a star. But then Hollywood beckoned and actor abandoned mentor. Twenty years on, they're back together – and boy does it feel good...
Three decades ago, an impoverished young actor named Antonio Banderas was sitting with friends outside Madrid's National theatre when a curious figure happened by. The new arrival sported a backcombed goth bouffant and brandished a bright red briefcase that could only contain documents of national importance. He ordered a drink, cracked some jokes then turned abruptly towards Banderas. "You have a very romantic face," he said. "You should do movies. Bye-bye!" And with that he was off, swinging his briefcase through the crowds on the Calle del Principe.
Nonplussed, Banderas turned to his friends. "Oh, that's Pedro Almodóvar," they told him. "He made a movie once. But he won't make any more."

Original Dallas actors Larry Hagman, 79, Patrick Duffy, 62, and Linda Gray, 70, will reprise their respective roles as Jr Ewing, his brother Bobby Ewing and Jr's wife Sue Ellen Ewing. Charlene Tilton and Steve Kanaly are also back as Lucy Ewing and Ray Krebbs.
