It’s expressive silent filmmaking at its best — Anthony Asquith vies with Alfred Hitchcock for direction in silent-era England. Elissa Landi and Brian Aherne meet in the Tube but become entangled in the jealous scheme of the jealous Cyril McLaglen. Restored just a few years back after being unavailable for generations, this is a beauty: the BFI gives it a full orchestral orchestra score, plus a second avant-garde ‘contextual audio’ track.

Though major studios used to crank them out by the truckload, today the movie musical is a fairly infrequent occurrence — not just because they’re commercially risky but because the genre itself is an inherently ambitious undertaking. Ranging from “Once” to Damien Chazelle’s pre-“La La Land” romance “Guy and Madeline on a Park Bench,” there have been some moderately successful attempts at making indie musicals on a micro-budget, but the question still lingers of whether audiences are willing to accept a modern movie in which people sing out their emotions.
In a risky departure from a résumé otherwise dominated by broad comedy, Josh Klausner gives it a stab with “Wanderland.” Different though it may be from his 1999 debut “The 4th Floor” — a quasi-horror thriller with surreal touches — this oddball effort is more an exercise in low-key quirkiness set in a slightly alternative universe where everything but our protagonist is a little “off.

Matt Lucas' autobiography is now on sale - and it's a book well worth seeking out...
In the preface to what both is and isn’t his autobiography, Matt Lucas fairly accurately tells you what you’re going to get. He concedes that the tone of the book shifts a lot, and indeed it does. He tells you it’s not quite chronological, and it isn’t. And he also refuses to play by the rules where you have to throw people under the proverbial bus and break confidences, to spice an autobiography up.
He had me on side early with that preface. Because what it also establishes is the very human, clearly self-authored collection of stories that follows. As a rule, I’m not a fan of the A-z format that Lucas adopts to give his book structure – he himself comes a cropper when it gets to X!

Future Frames, an initiative of European Film Promotion who are also behind European Shooting Stars in Berlin and Producers on the Move in Cannes, came to the end of its third edition yesterday (5 July) at the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival (June 30-July 8).
The event takes 10 young film students from across Europe and showcases their short films to festival audiences while also giving them industry mentoring.
Even though it’s still a relatively new initiative, European Film Promotion already feel that there are tangible results to show.
“There’s Karen Vazquez Guadarrama from Belgium, who received her first job offers following Future Frames in 2016,” said Efp’s Managing Director Sonja Heinen, speaking to Screen.
“She also reported, like her fellow participants, that there was a strong interest shown by other international film festivals in their work.

We chatted to actor Rory Kinnear about his roles in Sky Atlantic's Guerrilla, Bond, Penny Dreadful and more…
In Rory Kinnear’s first answer during our chat about his role in Sky Atlantic drama Guerrilla, he makes a wry joke at his own expense. He’s not a well-known actor, he says, and perhaps not one with “a particularly heroic face!” he laughs when we talk about the moral complexity of his roles. Give him an outright compliment and he deflects the praise elsewhere, onto writers and directors, John Logan for Penny Dreadful, John Ridley for Guerrilla. His role as Bill Tanner in the James Bond franchise is a “very, very small” part of an enormous machine, he stresses.

★★★★★ An unbroken crane shot in Shooting Stars' opening scene, tracking movie starlet Mae Feather (Annette Benson) as she wanders from her own ground-level film set into the first-floor set of her lover's, easily matches both Goodfellas' restaurant scene and the opening sequence of Orson Welles' Touch of Evil. It's an achievement made all the more impressive by both the technological limitations of the time and the fact that it was British director Anthony Asquith's debut film. Helping matters is Henry Harris and Stanley Rodwell's gorgeous cinematography, which uses expressionistic light and shadow that ironically plays with the boundaries between artificial sets and 'real' space, a theme that informs the film's central narrative. Indeed, Shooting Stars is at its most successful when it juxtaposes its stars' unhappy private lives with the artifice of public celebrity.

It was hella formative.
The renewed popularity of Thunderbirds had led to Matchbox releasing a Tracy Island playset. This became a must-have Christmas item, to the extent that fights were reported over the remaining sets in stores. Leading European talent agent Richard Cook has called for a radical re-thinking of both the European film festival system and of public funding bodies like Eurimages and Media.
Cook also called for festivals and funders alike to pay far more attention to talent development, during the Binger-Screen International interview at the Netherlands Film Festival in Utrecht.
“Within the European funding bodies, there is a misplaced emphasis on distribution; that somehow most of European film’s problems relate to a deficit in this area,” said Cook, co-founder of Dublin and London-based The Lisa Richards Agency, whose clients include Pierce Brosnan and Cillian Murphy.
“The problem isn’t one of distribution, it is one of too many bad films made that the public has no interest in seeing. Europe should focus on funding less films and better ones. This implies a more detailed approach at an early point in the process, specifically at script stage.”

Shooting Stars, Anthony Asquith’s sharp-edged 1928 satire of the film industry, proves the lure of the behind-the-cameras drama is almost as old as cinema itself
It makes sense that movies should be like laws and sausages – it’s better not to see how they’re made. If the green screen doesn’t ruin the magic of the CGI, the box the leading man stands on for the love scenes might undermine the romance. It makes sense that movies should be like laws and sausages – it’s better not to see how they’re made. If the green screen doesn’t ruin the magic of the CGI, the box the leading man stands on for the love scenes might undermine the romance. You might know him best as oddball Angelos Epithemiou, but actor Dan Skinner has admitted he was keen to take a break from his alter-ego.
The 42-year-old comic told Digital Spy that he is working on a new Angelos live show - the first time he'll have played the character since 2013.
"I haven't left him behind," he insisted. "But I needed to take a break from it for a little, because otherwise I'd have just been doing that.
"People will always go, 'Do some more, do some more' - but I never ever wanted to do just one thing."
Skinner appeared as Angelos on the live circuit for seven years, before playing the character on BBC Two's anarchic quiz Shooting Stars from 2009 to 2011.
"Then there was another five years after Shooting Stars of doing it on television, going on tour and all the rest of it. By the end of that cycle,...

BBC Two is 50 - the British Broadcasting Corporation's second eldest child hits the half-century mark today - Sunday, April 20.
Picking out the greatest shows from five decades of broadcasting seems like a near-impossible task, but never say that Digital Spy is easily cowed. These are - in our humble opinion - the channel's finest ever offerings.
BBC Two is 50: The Hour, Bottom and more shows to bring back
The rules are as follows: shows like Red Dwarf that originated on BBC Two are eligible, but shows better associated with another channel are not - say Top of the Pops, which aired on BBC One for the majority of its run but shifted to the sister channel for its final episodes.

BBC Two is 50 - the British Broadcasting Corporation's second eldest child hits the half-century mark this Sunday (April 20) and, in those five decades, has delivered some phenomenally popular and powerful programming.
Kim Shillinglaw has a lot to live up to - with every channel controller from the very first, Michael Peacock, to the most recent, Janice Hadlow, serving up a range of diverse, entertaining and even groundbreaking shows.
Since 1964, BBC Two has become renowned as a home for great comedy - from the surreal The League of Gentlemen and Shooting Stars, to much-loved classics like The Likely Lads and The Goodies and modern favourites such as The Trip and The Wrong Mans.
But there's a tradition of fine drama too - running from the original The Forsyte Saga (1967) to Line of Duty (2012-present) and taking in such iconic series as I, Claudius (1976) and Edge of Darkness (1985).
Meanwhile, popular entertainment and...
