Off Ramp is never subtle. Within the first five minutes, when Trey (Jon Oswald) is released from prison and says a heartfelt goodbye to correctional officer and fellow Juggalo (devoted fan of Insane Clown Posse) Faith (Laura Cayouette), the film begins delivering its message that found family, particularly Juggalo family, is often more loving than blood family. Over the next hour and a half, the movie repeatedly emphasizes that message through plot points, voiceover, a visual motif, and the declarations of love between its central pair. The film follows Trey and his best friend Silas (Scott Turner Schofield), who is introduced caring for his non-verbal grandmother, as they set out for the annual Gathering of the Juggalos. It’s a classic road movie set up, and...

It has been a Mississippi minute since viewers of the Katori Hill-created P-Valley have enjoyed the Starz drama gracing their TV screens on a Sunday night at 10.
With the show's last episode of P-Valley Season 2 airing on August 14, 2022, its absence has left a big hole in the hearts of committed viewers.
P-Valley's time away from the silver screen is thanks to a lawsuit claiming that P-Valley's premise was taken from another creative in the industry, in addition to the WGA and SAG strikes.
Since so much time has passed, a refresher on how Season 2 ended is a great way to gear up for the Season 3 shenanigans of the workers and regulars at The Pynk -- a strip and dance club in the Mississippi delta.
We've got everything you need to know right below.
How Did P-Valley Season 2 End?

Starz is heading down south with Uncle Clifford.
The Lionsgate-backed premium cable network has ordered Down in the Valley, a half-hour docuseries exploring the Deep South with P-Valley star Nicco Annan set to host. The six-episode series will launch at a date to be determined this year and explore the people, music, culture and stories of the South, per Starz, as the show will feature everything from strip clubs to sex workshops, rap performances and ancient hoodoo rituals.
The order for Down in the Valley arrives as P-Valley — from creator Katori Hall — has been off the air for nearly two years. Sources say production on P-Valley is expected to resume later this year, though the show is not expected to air in 2024.
“P-Valley has authentically captured Southern Black culture in our fictional world of Chuccalisa and piqued the curiosity of our Pynk Posse to learn more,” said Kathryn Busby,...

Gunmen: Mario Van Peebles fondly recalls working with Christopher Lambert on underrated 90s actioner
The other day, one of our writers sat down with Mario Van Peebles to talk about his upcoming spiritual sequel to Posse, Outlaw Posse. In the pretty awesome conversation, we asked Mario about what we consider a pretty underrated movie of his, Gunmen. This 1994 action flick paired him with Christopher Lambert, with an all-star cast that included Denis Leary as the film’s villain, Patrick Stewart, and nineties dream girl Brenda Bakke, as well as 90s rappers like Big Daddy Kane, Eric B, Rakim, Doctor Dre and Ed Lover – who all played themselves. It’s a tough movie to find these days, but Peebles had fond memories of what they were trying to accomplish with it.
“Gunmen tips a hat to The Good, The Bad and the Ugly. My character, Christophe’s character, and the other character have a piece of the puzzle as to where the cachet of gold is.

If Sergio Leone had ever signed on to make one of those ‘70s Blaxploitation oaters that once provided steady employment for Fred Williamson, it likely would have looked and sounded much like “Outlaw Posse,” a wildly uneven but cumulatively entertaining shoot-‘em-up that finds Mario Van Peebles doing triple duty as director, screenwriter and star. Quadruple duty, actually, if you count his credit as an executive producer.
“Outlaw Posse” has nothing to do with Van Peebles’ previous entry in this genre, 1993’s wild and woolly “Posse,” which suggests the multitasking filmmaker is tipping his Stetson to the multitude of ‘60s Spaghetti Westerns that, ahem, borrowed titles and eponymous characters from better known yet totally unrelated horse operas. But, then again, maybe not. Indeed, the film will probably be enjoyed most by folks not given to undue consideration of such trifling matters as lineage, logic and arrant anachronisms.

Mario Van Peebles made a big mark on cinema following in his father’s footsteps, Melvin Van Peebles, to be a unique, prominent voice for the African-American community in cinema. He would make many appearances as an actor, including working with fellow gunslinger Clint Eastwood on Heartbreak Ridge, as the sword-wielding Kane in Highlander: The Final Dimension, and taking on the monumental task of portraying Malcolm X in the Michael Mann film, Ali. However, in 1991, New Jack City, which co-stars Ice-t, would put Van Peebles on the map as a director, and he would parlay his run with movies like Panther and the 1993 western film, Posse, in which he also starred.

Both Leonardo DiCaprio and Tobey Maguire are renowned for being some of the biggest elites in the entire entertainment industry. For ones who started their career as heartthrobs, the pair have managed to keep their reputation still and continue to reside in fans’ hearts even after being almost fifty years old, all the while leading thriving decades-old careers.

All because of their notoriety and roguishness as newly made Hollywood heartthrobs, Leonardo DiCaprio and Tobey Maguire almost ruined their careers after their group got dubbed by critics as the “P—y Posse”.

Reach for the sky cause Mario Van Peebles has returned to the old West! In 1993, Mario Van Peebles dabbled in the Western genre with Posse, which he had written, directed, and starred in. Now, Peebles has gotten back into the director’s chair for a new feature he wrote called Outlaw Posse. The trailer has now been released courtesy of Quiver Distribution and features Mario Van Peebles acting alongside his son, Mandela, who also plays his son in the movie. This keeps the tradition of the Van Peebles filmmaking lineage rolling along as Mario was also heavily involved with his father, Melvin Van Peebles’ film career. Mario would even make a biopic where he portrayed his own father with the film Baadasssss!, which is a play on the title of Melvin’s famous movie Sweet Sweetback’s Baadasssss Song.

Sofia Coppola, whose awards contender “Priscilla” is now in theaters, is just one of several filmmakers whose parents were already major names in the industry. Both her father, Francis Ford Coppola, and her mother, Eleanor Coppola, are directors, as is her brother Roman.
Here are some of the most notable second-generation directors in Hollywood, including Jason Reitman, Rob Reiner, Mario Van Peebles and Colin Hanks.
We’re also a big fan of Francesca Scorsese’s TikTok videos with her dad, Martin Scorsese, especially the one where he auditions the family dog.

In 1993, Mario Van Peebles dabbled in the Western genre with Posse. Peebles took after his father, Melvin Van Peebles, who was a notable filmmaker in the blaxploitation genre in the 1970s. Mario appeared as an actor in films like Rappin’, Heartbreak Ridge starring Clint Eastwood, and the infamous Jaws: The Revenge, which featured an apathetic Michael Caine. He would also head up his own projects as a writer and director, much like his father. One of the more popular films Peebles would be known for is the 90s street crime classic, New Jack City.
Peebles is returning to the director’s chair for a new feature he wrote called Outlaw Posse. The film is a Western that bears no connection to the similarly titled Posse. Highland Film Group has picked up the distribution and has shared a first look at the film with a new picture exclusively shared by Variety.

As befitting its status as one of the world’s biggest companies, every now and then Amazon likes to take a big swing with its Prime Video originals. With its list of new releases for April 2023, the streamer is taking one of its biggest swings yet.

The jury system can by trying, but “Jury Duty” — a doc-style comedy series coming to Freevee on April 7 — examines it through the eyes of one juror. The catch: The actual juror, Ronald Gladden, doesn’t realize the case is fake and everyone else is an actor. Plenty of media stories about Jeymes Samuel’s “The Harder They Fall” have played up the Western’s all-Black cast, with many describing the Netflix film as a “corrective” to the popular Hollywood image of an all-white Old West. But a cursory Google search will offer that this credit has been attributed to a number of other titles that came long before Samuel and even the oldest members of his all-star cast were even born.

Strode, a former professional athlete, was one of the first African-American actors to break the glass ceiling, appearing in supporting roles in many major films. The festival, titled "The Legend of Woody Strode", will offer a rare opportunity to see many of his films on the big screen. Here is the official press release.

There have been Black ensemble Westerns before, from Posse in 1993 all the way back to 1937’s Harlem on the Prairie. Still, they’ve hardly been as prolific as those led by Clint Eastwood and John Wayne. Now comes The Harder They Fall, Netflix’s Jeymes Samuel-helmed pic, which combines an ensemble cast of Black actors with a Sergio Leone-inspired style, plus a few modern touches.
When Nat Love (Jonathan Majors) was a child, Rufus Buck (Idris Elba) killed his parents. After a prison break frees Buck, Love assembles a gang to kill him. Love’s gang includes saloon owner Stagecoach Mary Fields (Zazie Beetz) and Fields’ muscle Cuffee (Danielle Deadwyler). Buck’s gang includes Cherokee Bill (Lakeith Stanfield) and Trudy Smith...

Photo: 'The Harder They Fall' The Wild West and the legacy of cowboys have for a very long time been whitewashed in Cinema, actors like John Wayne or Clint Eastwood acting as the face of the genre. But this isn’t actually historically accurate, in fact, experts estimate that in reality more than a quarter of the era’s cowboys were Black. William Loren Katz, a scholar of African American history, said, “Right after the Civil War, being a cowboy was one of the few jobs open to men of color who wanted to not serve as elevator operators or delivery boys or other similar occupations.” There are a few films that focus on Black narratives of the western tale, one of the first representations of Black cowboys was in ‘Lonesome Dove’, a 1989 miniseries based on Larry McMurtry’s novel. In 1993, the western film ‘Posse’ was released, which...

“While the events of this story are fictional…These. People. Existed.” Thus begins Jeymes Samuel’s western “The Harder They Fall,” currently streaming on Netflix. The period picture is populated with 19th century Black icons including Nat Love (Jonathan Majors), a former enslaved cowboy, Mary Fields (Zazie Beetz), the first Black star-route mail carrier in the U.S., and Rufus Black (Idris Elba), the head of the ruthless multi-racial gang of bank robbers.
“The Harder They Fall” is the first major Western led by a Black cast since Mario Van Peebles 1993 “Posse.” The director, though, told the L.A. Times that “The Harder They Fall” shouldn’t be described as simply a “Black” Western. “It’s just a story about these people in their own world, just like ‘Rio Bravo” is a story about John Wayne and Dean Martin in their own world,” Samuel said. “These aren’t white Westerns or white movies,...

Featuring, perhaps, the most serious discussion of first amendment rights from two grown men in clown makeup, “The United States of Insanity” dares you to laugh at the absurdity of Violent J and Shaggy 2 Dope’s oddly-loved Insane Clown Posse before diving headfirst into a lengthy, and occasionally heady, conversation regarding the power structures behind who is allowed to dictate musical taste and the ways in which the government attempts to act as cultural curators.

What say we saddle up and mosey’ down to the ole’ multiplex, pardner’? Or something like that since we’ve got an opportunity to take in a true cinematic rarity. Several decades ago the Western (or as the Variety “trade paper’ called them “Oaters”) was a staple at the local “Bijou”, just like comedies, musicals, romances, and horror flicks. And TV “rode alongside’ with the genre encompassing over half of network primetime fare. Oh, but now…(cue the tumbleweeds). Sure, there have been modern Westerns like the recent Let Him Go and Cry MacHo, but they’re pretty much set in modern times. No, this new one takes place near the tail end of the 19th century and its cast is mainly black (I’d say African-American but many...

When thinking of Western genre icons, John Wayne and Clint Eastwood often come to mind. It wasn’t until Mario Van Peebles’ 1993 film Posse was released and the first of its kind to truly go mainstream that Black Western fans got the idea that they could exist in the Wild West as heroes. Director Jeymes Samuel and producer Jay-Z are building upon this legacy with their film The Harder They Fall, debuting theatrically on October 22 and streaming on Netflix beginning November 3.

There’s a cruel irony working against Hollywood’s efforts to diversify: For nearly a century, the industry depicted the world as a place dominated by white, straight, able-bodied men. The movies typically relegated women and people of color to supporting and subservient roles, while excluding (or else vilifying) queer and handicapped characters. As a result, entire generations have been raised on lopsided and inaccurate representations of our past — that Jesus was white, for example — to the extent that they don’t necessarily believe it when Black actors appear in situations where they played a significant (off-screen) role. Like the American West.

Melvin Van Peebles, the influential filmmaker behind “Sweet Sweetback’s Baadassss Song,” and father of director and actor Mario Van Peebles, has died. He was 89.
“Dad knew that Black images matter,” Mario Van Peebles said in a statement from the Criterion Collection. “If a picture is worth a thousand words, what was a movie worth? We want to be the success we see, thus we need to see ourselves being free. True liberation did not mean imitating the colonizer’s mentality. It meant appreciating the power, beauty and interconnectivity of all people.”
“Sweet Sweetback” will be screened at the New York Film Festival this week for a 50th anniversary tribute. “In an unparalleled career distinguished by relentless innovation, boundless curiosity and spiritual empathy, Melvin Van Peebles made an indelible mark on the international cultural landscape through his films, novels, plays and music,” the Criterion Collection said.

Legendary actor and producer Kirk Douglas died Wednesday at the age of 103. The actor, who rose to fame from performances in films like “Champion,” which earned him an Oscar nomination in 1949, was among the last living figures of Hollywood’s Golden Age.

Wow — a good Audie Murphy movie. Clair Huffaker’s screenplay should take credit, as well as the workmanlike direction of former Hitchcock assistant Herbert Coleman. Even John Saxon comes off well, plus the film can boast good work from favorites Zohra Lampert and Vic Morrow, and fine support from Rodolfo Acosta, Royal Dano and Lee Van Cleef.

Hardwicke says "it’s really wild. I can’t quite talk about it, but we’ll probably do the announcement in a couple of weeks. It’s a very fun, very crazy story that goes back to more of my ‘Thirteen’ days. It’s more indie, raw and gritty, and it’s a true story."
In regards to 'Posse', she says she, the film's writer and actress Virginia Madsen have been working on that for the last few days but it's still some time off as there's a lot of script work...

Having taken on supernatural horrors in vampires and werewolves, "Twilight" and "Red Riding Hood" director Catherine Hardwicke is turning to a real life scare: angry teenage girls.
Deadline reports that Hardwicke has signed on to helm the big screen adaptation of the 2006 book "The B*tch Posse," by Martha O'Connor. Here's the synopsis, via Publisher's Weekly:
The story focuses on three friends, Cherry, Amy and Rennie, as high school seniors and as women in their mid-30s. Compelled by miserable home lives to form the B*tch Posse as teenagers, the three girls ricochet dangerously through their last year of high school, sharing a passionate, almost sinister bond until a terrible secret rips them apart. Still damaged--and separated--by the unspeakable event, the three live equally wretched lives as adults, Cherry in a mental institution, Rennie as a promiscuous failed writer and Amy in a loveless marriage.

After the overwrought supernatural love triangles of both Twilight and Red Riding Hood, it sounds like Catherine Hardwicke is looking to ease back into the sort of territory she covered so well with Thirteen, agreeing a deal to direct The Bitch Posse.Actress-writer Tristine Skyler has adapted Martha O’Connor’s 2006 novel, which appears to blend the time-jumping memory tales of Now and Then with the pitch-black portrayal of women seen in Heathers. The "Bitch Posse" of the title is a group of three friends, Cherry, Amy and Rennie, who come from difficult homes but bond over their shared problems. But instead of forming a self-help group, they turn their frustrations against their fellow classmates, causing trouble until something tears their friendship apart. And the ramifications push on into their adult lives, with one entering a mental institution, another trapped in a loveless marriage and the third former friend as...
