Wayfarer took the metal world by storm with their sweeping black metal epic album American Gothic in 2023. The album provides a unique look at the history of the United States, and drummer Isaac Faulk has previously discussed numerous different elements that influenced the album’s creation. Faulk’s long-running relationship with anime manifests itself in countless ways in Wayfarer’s music, as well as the music of his numerous other projects like Stormkeep and Blood Incantation. From anime OSTs to subject matter to artistic presentation, the medium is deeply influential in his creative process. I chatted with Faulk to learn a bit more about how Trigun and Flcl were pivotal in making one of the year’s best albums. American Gothic has been such a smash success and ended up on so many “Album of the Year” lists! What was that recording process like? Isaac : The last record was more in this big,...

Fasten your seat belts and put your flashiest sunglasses on before boarding on Uri Marantz' train to the glitzy world of drug-fuelled funfair based on a true story about a man who got away with it all. Before you get tempted to draw any parallels to Walter White, a loveable but fictive character created for the popular TV series “Breaking Bad” starring the one and only Brian Cranston, hold your horses: the man whose name was changed to Gabi (Oshri Cohen) to protect his identity, is really like you and me. Furthermore, unlike Walter, he didn't find a way and means to produce a known drug to earn a significant amount of cash, instead he invented a legal psychoactive drug from Cathinonec, a completely new substance, through his knowledge of chemistry and the need to feed his own personal beast.

“The Boys” is beefing up its squad with the addition of cast members Rosemarie DeWitt, Rob Benedict and Elliot Knight in Season 4. The Prime Video superhero spoof series will also see the return of Simon Pegg, who portrayed Hughie’s father in earlier seasons and who will be joined by DeWitt, taking on the role of the Jack Quaid character’s mom.
No character details were revealed for Benedict and Knight. Previously announced additions to the upcoming fourth season are Susan Heyward (playing “Sister Sage”), Valorie Curry (portraying “Firecracker”) and Jeffrey Dean Morgan as recurring guest star. Cameron Crovetti, who plays Homelander’s easily influenced son, has also been upped to series regular.

The 2018 New York Magazine feature “The Watcher” had all the makings of a taut, twisty and timely psychological thriller that triggered our universal neuroses about the illusions of privacy and safety in our own homes. Journalist Reeves Wiedeman unfurled a years-long saga of the real-life Broaddus family who paid a bit too much to fulfill their American dream of escaping the city and moving into an idyllic New Jersey suburb, only to find themselves trapped in a nightmare: Almost immediately after settling in, they begin receiving sinister letters threatening them and their children. The situation spins out of control, sending the family into paranoia (both justified and not) that pits neighbor against neighbor.
It’s easy to see why six different studios were eager to snap up the screen rights to Wiedeman’s feature, but it feels as though Netflix was trying to burn off this premium piece of IP...

Jaume Collet-Serra has a fascinating filmography that gets more and more interesting as time goes on. His debut feature was the aughts horror "House of Wax" remake, but he's now at the helm of the DC superhero movie "Black Adam." While the general public may know him best for his films like the Dwayne Johnson-starring "Jungle Cruise" or the Liam Neeson action thrillers "Unknown," "Non-Stop," "Run All Night," and "The Commuter," to horror fans, he'll always be the man behind "Orphan" and "The Shallows." After his foray into the DC Extended Universe, Jaume Collet-Serra is returning to his thrilling roots with the new film "Carry On."
"Carry On" marks the first collaborative effort between Netflix and Amblin as part of the overall deal Amblin signed with the streaming giant last year. Tj Fixman was behind the screenplay's first draft, with Michael Green providing the finishing touches. No word yet...

Shaun Cassidy is stepping into the ranch family drama game with “Unbroken,” a drama pilot ordered by NBC. The show, which hails from Universal Television and Shaun Cassidy Productions, centers on three dynastic ranch families on the central coast of California, who make love and war in a passionate struggle to survive. Ultimately, this sets the stage for a group of fiercely determined young women to win big for all at the National Championship of Rodeo.
Cassidy will write and executive produce the pilot episode. If the series gets fully picked up by NBC, it will join a modern resurgence of westerns on TV — “Yellowstone” and “1883” on Paramount Network, “Walker” on the CW and western-adjacent shows like “The Mandalorian” on Disney Plus, “Westworld” on HBO Max, plus new Latinx vineyard family series “Promised Land” on ABC.
Cassidy, a singer, actor, writer and producer, is no stranger to the television landscape on-screen or behind-the-scenes.

CBS Television Studios, Rideback and Thinking Hat are reteaming on a second year of the Rideback/Thinking Hat Campfire writers room, which in its inaugural year developed and sold two projects to CBS. The program, designed to attract experienced feature film writers and other creative voices to broadcast TV development for the first time, has set Jeff Buhler (Pet Sematary), Gbenga Akinnagbe (The Wire) and writer Katrina O’Gilvie (Swagger) for this year’s roster.
The trio work with showrunner/executive producers Anna Fricke (Walker), Rina Mimoun (Under the Bridge) and Corinne Brinkerhoff (American Gothic), who all have overall deals at CBS TV Studios. They will provide support from development through series.
The program, run by Thinking Hat founder and writer-producer Craig Turk, sold two projects to CBS Television Network in its first year in 2019-2020: Drift from Chris Salmanpour and The Eshmun Protocol from Jason Keller.

CBS TV Studios is looking to reboot “Clueless” for the small screen. A drama series based on the 1995 comedy is in the works at the studio, a person with knowledge of the project tells TheWrap.
The show would be focused on the Dionne character played by Stacey Dash in the Alicia Silverstone-led movie and the followup series, which ran on ABC from 1996-1997 and then Upn from 1997-1999.
The project, written by Jordan Reddout and Gus Hickey (“Will & Grace”), is currently still the in development stage and being considered by multiple bidders, the individual tells us.

The series is described “as a baby pink and bisexual blue-tinted, tiny sunglasses-wearing, oat milk latté and Adderall-fueled look at what happens when the high school Queen Bee (Cher) disappears and her life-long number two (Dionne) steps into Cher’s vacant Air Jordans.

There are some works of art that are said to speak the soul of a nation or culture; and even though no culture is a monolith, works such as "American Gothic" or "Mona Lisa" are often seen as 'representing' a nation. French documentarian Jean Michel Roux journeys through Finland to dissect that nation's attachment to its most famous painting, "The Wounded Angel". It was painted in 1903 by Hugo Simberg, and depicts two young boys carrying an angel on a stretcher; the angels' wings are wounded, it is blindfolded, and holds snowdrops flowers in one hand. Simberg created the painting from a series of sketches made while he was convalescing in a nearby hospital, and took daily walks...

Rachel Mason grew up believing that her parents ran a small bookstore in Los Angeles. She wasn’t entirely mistaken, although the naive young woman — then an artsy teen, now a documentary filmmaker — never imagined that, as her mother Karen bluntly tells her on camera, “at one point, we were probably the biggest distributor of hardcore gay films in the United States.” Named for the now-defunct SoCal fixture, “Circus of Books” is an affectionate look at one of the most unusual mom and pop businesses in America, directed by the person who knew Mom and Pop best.
As such, it’s no great surprise that Rachel (who puts herself on screen up front) focuses on Karen and Barry Mason, the straight, middle-class California couple who established and operated the shop, rather than what such an establishment meant to L.A.’s gay population at the time. Mixed among the vintage...

Well, here’s a conundrum: die-hard devotees of any aging franchise are the audience most likely to embrace each new resurrection. But in the case of the 31-year-old “Child’s Play” series, many fans have been outraged by the fact that creator Don Mancini and voice-of-Chucky Brad Dourif were conspicuously replaced for the new reboot.
Despite the good faith efforts of director Lars Klevberg (“Polaroid”) and writer Tyler Burton Smith, it’s unlikely that this entry will seduce those who loyally followed all seven of Mancini’s previous “Chucky” movies. Indeed, they may want to wait until Mancini’s own, upcoming TV version is released next year. But after 2004’s “Seed of Chucky,” which devolved into go-for-broke absurdity — as did two straight-to-dvd installments that followed — it has to be acknowledged that even sociopathic toys could use an occasional gush of new blood.

First Trailer for the Robert The Bruce Film With Braveheart Actor Angus Macfadyen Reprising The Role
If you’re a fan of Mel Gibson’s Braveheart, I’ve got the first trailer here for you to watch for a movie that you’re going to want to see. It’s a historical action drama based on the Scottish warrior Robert the Bruce, it’s called Robert the Bruce, and Braveheart star Angus Macfadyen reprises his role from Braveheart.
The movie looks pretty good, and the story “explores the lost months during a long, harsh winter when Robert, injured and pursued across the Highlands by his enemies, takes shelter with the steely Morag and her fearless children. Restored to health and spurred on by this humble family’s resilience and courage, Bruce finally finds the resolve to rally his people and lead his country to hard-fought independence.” This is the synopsis that was released:

HBO has put in development Counterfeit, a half-hour comedy from husband-and-wife writing duo Andrew Gettens and Lauren Mackenzie (Hit & Run) and Jessica Rhoades’ (Sharp Objects) Pacesetter Productions, as part of Rhoades’ first-look deal with the premium cable network.
Written by Gettens and Mackenzie, Counterfeit centers on a couple, desperate to have a child, who learn there’s no way for them to conceive the old-fashioned way. And with no resources (and a loudly ticking biological clock) they start counterfeiting money to pay for IVF. Gettens & MacKenzie conceived of the idea for Counterfeit while going through their own struggles with IVF.
Gettens and Mackenzie will executive produce with Rhoades via her Pacesetter Prods.
Gettens and MacKenzie are a married writing team who started working together after collaborating on a best man speech for MacKenzie’s brother in 2014. They have since risen through the TV ranks to their current position as co-executive...

While at Fantastic Fest last month, Daily Dead spoke with Pesce about the process of adapting someone else’s material for his newest film, how Piercing is his tribute to giallo movies, and more.
Look for more on Piercing closer to its release!

If there’s one comic-book adaptation I’m excited for much more than Any others it’s the forthcoming Amazon Studios TV adaptation of Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson’s The Boys – which still ranks as one of my favourite series of all time.
Set to debut on Amazon Prime in 2019, this iteration of The Boys stars Karl Urban (Thor: Ragnarok), Jack Quaid (The Hunger Games), Karen Fukuhara (Suicide Squad), Laz Alonso (Traffik), Antony Starr (American Gothic), Dominique McElligott (The Last Tycoon), Chace Crawford (Gossip Girl), Erin Moriarty (True Detective), Jessie T. Usher (Independence Day: Resurgence), Elisabeth Shue (Leaving Las Vegas) and Nathan Mitchell (iZombie).
Just check out the first poster for the show below, which captures the look of the first graphic novel of The Boys I ever read – making me even more certain that (especially thanks to a lack of censorship on streaming services) we’ll get a...

American filmmakers have been fascinated by horror and the fantastical since the birth of cinema itself, with one early example cited here being an 1898 New York screening by the Thomas Edison Company of a short film featuring a witch and an appearance from Mephistopheles. Partially inspired by the work of French magician Georges Méliès, it was not long before ghosts, demons, witches and devils would become commonplace in the silent films being produced in New York, and eventually Hollywood itself.
Jonathan Rigby’s American Gothic (Signum publishing) is a fascinating and idiosyncratic exploration of the American horror film, a genre which has inspired filmmakers to create some of the most memorable moments in cinema history. More than a simple encyclopaedia, the book charts the historical development of the genre through not only the classics such as Phantom of the Opera, Dracula and The Cat and the Canary,...

The Netflix-produced “1922” has jolts of violence and sweeping period details, but in a year overrun with Stephen King adaptations, it’s also the simplest of them: “It” features a ludicrous shapeshifting clown, “The Dark Tower” is an inter-dimensional sci-fi western fantasy, and “Gerald’s Game” has kinky sex gone wrong and a giant goal. In “1922,” a guy kills his wife and feels guilty about it. That’s the gist of its premise, and while nothing groundbreaking, the story mines a degree of profundity out of the traditional supernatural thriller tropes at its core.

After decades of supporting roles and character parts, the late Harry Dean Stanton’s legend suddenly came into focus in Paris, Texas
It took a German director to notice one of cinema’s most iconic American faces: in 1984, when this actor was 58 years old. He had been there all along.
After decades of supporting roles and character parts, playing opposite the big stars and loyally showcasing their grandstanding with his own calm stillness and occasionally with his own beautiful singing voice, Harry Dean Stanton had become craggily gaunt in his ascetic handsomeness, like some Bergmanian pastor or the farmer in Grant Wood’s painting American Gothic.

In today's Horror Highlights, we have a Q&A with The Gracefield Incident at Mathieu Ratthe, new stills from Volumes of Blood: Horror Stories, and details on Famous Monsters of Filmland's presence at this year's San Diego Comic-Con.
Thanks for taking the time to answer some questions for us, Mathieu. How and when did you first come up with the idea for The Gracefield Incident?
Mathieu Ratthe: First of all, thank you, Derek, for your interest in our film. I wanted to create a suspenseful story that scared the crap out of the audience, but also made them emotionally involved, which is really tough to do in this kind of movie, but I think we achieved it pretty well in our film.
The conceptual idea (or I liked to call it the “technique”) came after I realized how many days I was given to shoot our film with the budget that I had.

City of the Dead (Aka Horror Hotel) 1960 Directed by John Llewellyn Moxey, Starring Christopher Lee, Patricia Jessel, Venetia Stevenson, Betta St. John and Dennis Lotis. Arrow 2 disc Blu-ray and DVD released: 24th April 2017
When filming began on The City of the Dead, Christopher Lee was already established as a leading horror star. Hammer was paving the way with a new brand of horror and Lee had played a huge part in their success playing the Frankenstein monster, Dracula and the Mummy. The City of the Dead provided the perfect opportunity for Lee to spread his wings further within the genre by moving into the realms of witchcraft, the occult and American gothic.

The director of Trollhunter and now The Autopsy Of Jane Doe talks to us about how to make a truly suspenseful horror movie...
The Autopsy Of Jane Doe is a very different kind of horror film. Set largely in one location - a Virginia morgue - it's all based around one mystery: the identity and history of a mysterious dead body. Almost perfectly preserved, pale eyes staring, the young woman's corpse (the Jane Doe of the title) is gradually dissected by father-and-son coroners Tommy and Austin (Brian Cox and Emile Hirsch respectively). And the more layers they peel back, the more troubling Jane Doe's story becomes.

Disturbing, scary tale of an isolated girl who grows into a killer, filmed beautifully in black and white by a debut director who knows his way around a nightmare
The 27-year-old Nicolas Pesce makes a very accomplished debut with this macabre horror nightmare in which the killer is a woman – and that’s a gender issue rare enough in horror to deserve pointing out, and throws into perspective her resemblance to Ed Gein, Norman Bates or Dennis Nilsen. The film has some visual echoes of Grant Wood’s painting American Gothic. A young woman, Francisca (played by Kika Magalhaes, and by Olivia Bond as a little girl) has grown up effectively alone on a remote farm somewhere in the Us, having been raised – or possibly discovered and adopted in sinister circumstances hinted at in the final act – by a Portuguese woman (Diana Agostini) and an elderly man (Paul Nazak).

The Harvard University student (and former People intern!) combines her love of art history with a knack for baking to design incredible “cake-paintings” that take her anywhere from 12 hours to four days to complete.
