For the biggest night in music, the Grammy Awards consistently struggle to overcome their ordinariness. In previous years, the show seemed to be on a confused search for meaning. An identity crisis instigated by years of snubs and accelerated by the pandemic led comedian Trevor Noah to admit in 2022 that the event was “a concert where we give out awards.”
That sentiment still rings true two years later. With most of the categories abandoned to an energetic but sparsely attended preshow ceremony, the main telecast feels like a trying exhibition and a hotbed of contradictions. To watch the Grammys in 2024 is to witness an insistence on fun without much actual evidence of it.
Some of that has to do with the forces that have changed how people consume awards shows. Is it worth another subscription to tune in to a more-than-three-hour showcase, especially if you can catch the snipped and...

The telecast opened with Dua Lipa in one of the showiest medleys of the night, combining “Training Season,” “Dance the Night” and “Houdini” on big metal scaffolding lifted, spun, and twisted by a troupe of dancers. We also got a dramatic production number from Sza, who turned “Snooze” and especially “Kill Bill” into a martial arts action extravaganza. Travis Scott and Playboi Carti brought moody intensity, eerie lighting, and deep fog to their medley of “My Eyes,” “I Know?” and “Fe!n.” U2 showed off...

Ever since Netflix announced it would be opening a Los Angeles pop-up restaurant, the jokes have been flying on social media. Would the servers use an algorithm to ask, “Since you liked grilled cheese, can we suggest broccoli?” Would you be allowed to share food with your friends or would it be forbidden, like Netflix password-sharing?
But at the preview night Tuesday for Netflix Bites at Short Stories Hotel on Fairfax, it was clear that the seriously delicious menu for the three-month pop-up, inspired by the streamer’s food programming, was no laughing matter. Imaginative cocktails from mixologists, like “Drink Masters” contestant Kate Gerwin, got guests in the mood with concoctions like the Oaxacan on Top of the World, while Netflix co-ceo Ted Sarandos mingled with the chefs. Netflix’s VP of Live Experiences Greg Lombardo welcomed guests, explaining, “We’re always focused on bringing our fans closer to the stories that they love.

British country-soul singer Yola caps an exceptional 2019 with the release of a deluxe edition of her shimmering Walk Through Fire album, adding a cover of enthusiastic fan Elton John’s 1973 classic “Goodbye Yellow Brick Road” to the LP. Having already been performing the song on tour, Yola imbues the wistful but resolute lyrics with a glimmer of hope and defiance. Walk Through Fire producer Dan Auerbach punctuates the piano-driven tune with a melancholic light horn arrangement.

“Hal Blaine was such a great musician and friend that I can’t put it into words,” Brian Wilson wrote on Twitter Monday after news of the legendary session drummer’s death began to circulate. “Hal taught me a lot, and he had so much to do with our success — he was the greatest drummer ever.”
Blaine’s résumé backs up Wilson’s statement: tens of thousands of recording dates, ranging from Simon & Garfunkel to Sam Cooke, and hundreds of hits, often recorded as part of L.A. studio all-star team the Wrecking Crew.

Eric Binford, the protagonist (antagonist?) of Fade to Black (1980), loves movies so much, he is wholly subsumed by them. When not working in a Los Angeles film distribution center delivering prints to various locations, his life revolves around watching films on a projector in his room, or on TV, or reluctantly sharing a film at the theater with a crowd. Eric, played by Breaking Away’s Dennis Christopher, has no need for human interaction—the shadowy figures in the flickering lights are his only allies.
For those unfamiliar with Fade, it tells the simple tale of a lonely young man with an already tenuous grip on reality whose overwhelming passion for film leads him down a vengeful path of retribution against those who’ve wronged him. Dressing up as his favorite characters from filmdom (Dracula, The Mummy, Hopalong Cassidy, Cody Jarrett), Eric lays to waste those who come between him and his celluloid dreams.

This year’s Venice film festival gets off to a disastrous start with a fact-based thriller that’s light on thrills
Top of the world, ma? The Venice film festival has opened with the true story of an attempt on the summit of Mount Everest in 1996, directed by Baltasar Kormákur who made the action-thrillers Contraband and 2 Guns. It’s a disaster movie that isn’t a total success. Everest is an oddly subdued drama with plenty of ice, snow, beards, mountains, men shouting desperate instructions at each other through their snowy beards, above the deafening high winds. There’s a bit of don’t-look-down vertigo as our climbing heroes are expected to cross crevasses using ladders they appear to have bought from B&Q. And all the while the tremulous womenfolk are pining and whining on the end of a radio receiver or telephone while the heroic guys battle the elements.

Since John Pope first appeared on “Falling Skies” in the series’ second episode, he has been one of the TNT show’s most fun and fascinating characters to watch. In an alien invasion apocalypse, he’s the bad boy looking out for number one, a cynical nuisance, a thorn in Tom Mason’s side. But he’s also been a vital member of the 2nd Mass, loyal to his gang, a badass alien killer, and he even has his heart of gold moments. He’s sometimes an anti-hero character we love to hate — whenever he’s causing trouble within the 2nd Mass as if a war against aliens isn’t trouble enough — but he also comes to reveal struggles and a past that makes him rather relatable. Played by Colin Cunningham, Pope got a love interest in season 4. Sara (Mira Sorvino) has changed Pope, and that’s clearer than ever in the most recent episodes.

From Muppet Treasure Island to Speed, we take a look at the 90s soundtracks that deserve another listen...
Ah, the 1990s. The decade that brought us The Lion King. Titanic. Quentin Tarantino. That wordless bathroom scene in Baz Luhrmann's Romeo + Juliet. Angelo Badalamenti's Twin Peaks. Duel of the Fates from Star Wars: The Phantom Menace. In the Mood for Love.
It was a good 10 years for film music, no doubt.
But scratch the surface of 1991 through 1999 and there are tons of good scores ready to spring a surprise on your ears. Some were attached to sorely underrated movies, others were overshadowed by wildly successful ones, and some have simply been forgotten in the passage of time.
Here, in no particular order, are the top 25 underappreciated film soundtracks from the 1990s.
1. Chaplin - John Barry
Okay, let's start with a big one. Richard Attenborough. Robert Downey Jr. John Barry.

Beyoncé covers the latest issue of T: The New York Times Style Magazine and shows off her silly and sexy sides in the stunning photos shot by Juergen Teller. The accompanying article, titled "The Woman on Top of the World," discusses Beyoncé's superstardom and career achievements and touches on her rise to fame and role as "national figurehead" by calling out SNL's recent Beygency sketch. The piece also defends the provocative lyrics featured on her self-titled album, stating, "The sex - in the limo, in the kitchen, everywhere, apparently, but the bedroom - is married sex, family-values sex, which, the album makes clear, produced a bouncing baby girl, a result perhaps even [Fox News commentator] Bill O'Reilly can feel good about." The T photo spread is likely just the beginning of sexy shoots we can look forward to seeing from Beyoncé this Summer, especially as she and husband Jay Z gear...

Las Vegas—No genre embraces the American way of life with such unbridled patriotic fervor as country music, so paying tribute to the U.S. military seemed like a natural fit. But “Acm Presents: An All-Star Salute to the Troops” took what could have been a flag-waving, jingoistic exercise and turned it into a meaningful, often moving salute by not only honoring men and women in all branches of the armed services, but by including them as performers. And some of them threatened to steal the show from the professionals. Taped Monday (April 8), the night after the Acm Awards, and airing May 20 on CBS, the All-Star Salute featured top names such as Luke Bryan, Tim McGraw, Keith Urban, Lady Antebellum, Blake Shelton, Miranda Lambert , Toby Keith, Hunter Hayes, Dierks Bentley, and more. They put their hands together and celebrate Final 6. For a tribe that just lost two straight challenges and that only has a one-person number advantage, there's a lot of smugness. Imagine Dragons has certainly had a great year as its mainstream breakthrough continued with tunes like “Radioactive,” “It’s Time,” and “Demons.” For the jaunty “Top of the World,” the group takes a decidedly lighthearted approach. They take the idea of “Top of the World” literally, as the video reacts the 1969 moon landing, as seen through the eyes of hippies, tin-foil-wearing space-loving children, the astronauts, and even Richard Nixon. The Matt Eastin and Corey Fox-directed video is one of those clips that you notice new things every time you watch, including the spoof of the Beatles’ Abbey Road crossing and the...

Robin Thicke, "Blurred Lines" (Interscope)
Robin Thicke is having quite a moment.
After spending most of his decade-long recording career as one of R&B's journeymen – a sensuous crooner with the occasional crossover hit – Thicke has exploded into pop's consciousness with "Blurred Lines": It's the undeniable song of the summer and may turn out to be the single of the year. The Marvin Gaye-inflected, sex-filled dance groove (and its naughty video counterpart) has become a cultural flashpoint, sparking parodies, commentaries, endless radio replays and an unknown number of hookups.
It's a triumph for Thicke, to be sure – but tricky part of having success is sustaining it. It's not something Thicke has managed that well through the years, particularly after scoring with 2007's smoldering "Lost Without U." Will "Blurred Lines" end up being a transcendent, but very singular moment for the 36-year-old singer?
If it does, it won't be because of his music.

As Robin Thicke continues his quest to nab the song of the summer, the singer has announced his sixth studio album will be released on July 30.
"Blurred Lines" is currently enjoying a run at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100, and the album of the same name will serve as a follow-up to 2011's "Love After War." In addition to T.I. and Pharrell, who appear on Thicke's lead single, Kendrick Lamar will duet on a track called "Give It 2 U."
"The album is called 'Blurred Lines,'" Thicke said during a recent appearance on Power 105.1's "The Breakfast Club." "I've realized as I've gotten older that we all think we're living either in a black or white world, or on a straight path, but most of us are living right inbetween those straight lines. And everything you thought you knew, the older you get, you realize, I don't know nothing about this.

Raoul Walsh’s White Heat stars James Cagney as yet another gangster (Cagney being known for other films such as The Public Enemy and Angels with Dirty Faces), Cody Jarrett. Good morning!
If you're in Portland, come to the Top of the World Party to help some rad gay chicks climb a mountain. They are fundraising to benefit the American Lung Association and Climb For Clean Air, because they care.
If you are this girl's boyfriend's lesbian roommate (still with me?) you should probably know she is not super happy with you.
Nina Sky are fierce on the cover of Vndl magazine this month.
The Stir had Dana Rudolph of Mombian write something about being a lesbian mom on Mother's Day for their site. As long as you still get gifts, I think it's all good.
Two Danish dudes named Casper Christensen and Frank Hvam will likely be writing Sacha Baron Cohen's The Lesbian. This can either be really great or really terrible. Mostly it'll just fuck up my Google news feed.

May 4 marks the 15th anniversary of the release of LeAnn Rimes' hit album, "Sittin' on Top of the World."
Released in 1998, "Sittin' on Top of the World" was a major success for Rimes, hitting No. 3 on the Billboard 200 and going platinum. The album gave Rimes hits such as "Commitment" and "Nothing' New Under the Moon."
Releasing her first studio album at the age of 13, the now 30-year-old Rimes is set to release a new album, "Spitfire," next month.
The singer's personal life has been the subject of much media attention in recent years. Rimes married actor Eddie Cibrian in 2011 after she and Cibrian began an affair while married to other people. With the festive season approaching, here's a rundown of 10 all-time classic Christmas movie soundtracks.
Oh, the weather outside is frightful, a sure sign that people will soon start ranking, once again, the best Christmas movies of all time--a crazy thing to do, because we all know it’s still Die Hard. But what about film music? From Vaughn Monroe serenading the end of John McClane’s adventure to Danny Elfman’s Nightmare before the big day, soundtracks are a big part of that seasonal feeling.
And so, as December draws in, here are the top 10 Christmas movie soundtracks of all time. (Probably.)
10. Meet Me in St. Louis (1944)
Made in MGM’s heyday, this romantic musical is based on a series of shorts by Sally Benson, but really is a showcase for Judy Garland’s legendary larynx. The Wizard Of Oz star came into her own in the 1944 movie,...

Part of the Tony Scott: A Moving Target critical project. Go here for the project's description, index and links to project's other movement.
This is one "movement" of our exquisite corpse-style critical project, Tony Scott: A Moving Target, which coincidentally begins with a look at Crimson Tide, the same movie that begins the other movement. As outlined in the introduction to the entire project, this project began in my mind, as something fairly simple: a snaking continuum of scene analysis. This is only in part what resulted.
The varied responses I got back from my group—"mine" in the sense that it is the one I participated in, since Gina's contribution closes Movement B—seem to say as much about the participating critics as they do about Tony Scott's films and the overlap between the two: the perception of Scott's films and career. Fire, explosions and flares always play their own choreographic role in Tony Scott’s films. A machine gun roars, belching fire, and Scott’s trademark editing obeys the winking of these gunfire flashes. In the breathtaking finale of Domino—perhaps the director’s most personal and definitely most fragile film—the characters go as high as possible: to the 106th floor of a Las Vegas tower, in pursuit of an explosion. As there they are greeted by the mafia: Welcome to the Top of the World.
Why go so high? Domino is devoted to the slightly naïve belief in the invisible hands of fortune,...

You shouldn’t need a prologue comic or a prequel story to help you understand the story in Dredd 3D. Well, to be fair, you probably won’t need much to understand that whole thing. It’s rather simple. The dude in the helmet is the Judge. He gets to kill bad guys real good. There’s a rookie and a bad guy played by the wife from 300 with a big scar on her face that does not in any way detract from her aesthetic prowess. Bullets. Slow-motion. Drugs. Justice. Boom. Despite all this, the folks behind the film have put together a pretty rad prequel comic called “Top of the World, Ma-Ma” that tells the story of the film’s baddest babe and her lurid past. Created with 2000 Ad and written by Matt Smith with art by Henry Flint, Chris Blythe, and Simon Bowland, the “The Secret History of Ma-Ma” is a new 16 page collectible comic...

Telluride is already the highest film festival in the world, as far as elevation goes. But if there's anyone in town who should be humming the Carpenters' "Top of the World" right now, it's Ben Affleck. Jennifer Lopez, Robin Thicke, Nicole Scherzinger and Adam Levine had all been in the game for some time before bellying up to the judges table on their respective reality shows. Shows that exist, in theory, to launch the careers of average Americans who need that big break.

Tim Burton plays the jokey 'darkness' of his style to totally predictable effect in his latest oddity-comedy
The new film from Tim Burton does something that is rarer than you might think. It whelms you. Its effect is whelming. The film delivers precisely the satisfaction a sympathetic audience could expect from its director, not one degree above or below. The audience is whelmed. It's a whelmer. Tim Burton drives it straight down the middle of the anticipation fairway. You will be whelmed by the Goth style, whelmed by the CGI olde-worlde darkness of the Liverpool-in-1760 prologue, whelmed by Johnny Depp's vampire makeup and quasi-English accent and occasional funny line, and intensely, almost sensually whelmed by the fact that Helena Bonham Carter is in it. This really is a reasonably, moderately, whelmingly good film.
It is based on a cult Us TV show from Burton's childhood that never made it...

Composer Danny Elfman has written the score to Tim Burton's "Dark Shadows," starring Johnny Depp, natch. It probably sounds a little like the music featured here (though you can actually hear it here). However, what's likely a bit more interesting than the original score, is the soundtrack to Burton's comedic '70s-set vampire tale based off a 1960s ABC soap opera about a family tormented by strange supernatural occurrences.
Due May 8th via WaterTower Music, the 11-track various artists soundtrack features Iggy Pop, The Moody Blues, The Carpenters, T-Rex, Alice Cooper and even Johnny Depp doing a spoken-word version of the Steve Miller Band's "The Joker." You can hear samples of the soundtrack over at the Water Town Music site and or just listen to the clips below. How has Danny Elfman never won a damn Oscar?! Not only that . . . he’s only been nominated four times. Let that thought linger in your brain for a little bit while you hum in your head the theme to Batman (1989), The Nightmare Before Christmas, Mission: Impossible, and Men in Black. Those are just a few memorable scores he has given us over the years. A frequent collaborator with Tim Burton, Dark Shadows marks the 13th time the composer has teamed up with the popular director. Who’s to say that his new score for the film won’t mark another memorable partnership between the two. To get a taste of how he approached the score to the adaptation of the cult TV show, read what he has to say below courtesy of Dark Shadows News.
“Tim [Burton] had some specific ideas about the music,” he explains in a press release for the forthcoming soundtrack album.

The beginning of the trailer is straight-up gothic horror: an 18th-century romance, a jealous witch, a freshly born vampire crying blood, a hushed ghost whispering “He’s coming …”
Then Johnny Depp and Tim Burton’s Dark Shadows turns on the laugh track.
This movie, based on the 1966-1971 supernatural soap opera, turns out to take its source material not so seriously. When the buried undead bloodsucker Barnabas Collins is freed from his tomb in the year 1972, he finds the time period … a little funky.
“What sorcery is this?” Barnabas sneers at a TV broadcast of the Carpenters singing “Top of the World.

Fans say band's comeback single appears to be a re-worked version of '70s song 'Down in Flames.'

On Tuesday, Van Halen premiered "Tattoo," the first single from their comeback album with David Lee Roth, A Different Kind of Truth. And almost as soon as they did, longtime fans couldn't help but notice that the song sounded, well, a little familiar.
In fact, the "new" song might be a re-worked version of "Down in Flames," a track Van Halen played live in the 1970s but never actually put on an album. And listening to the two side by side, you can't help but think those fans are right. From the chords to the chorus, "Tattoo" bears a striking similarity to the old song.
