When Chappelle’s Show debuted on Comedy Central 20 years ago on January 22, 2003, nobody knew who Dave Chappelle was, outside of a few brief appearances in Robin Hood: Men in Tights, Con Air, and Blue Streak in 1999. Mainstream didn’t associate him with stand-up, despite his very first special, Killin’ Them Softly, airing on HBO in 2000, and sketch comedy series like SNL and its ‘edgier cousin’ MadTV were reaching a lull as audiences entered the new millennium. But after the first episode and the closing Clayton Bigsby sketch, which introduced the concept of a black White supremacist, audiences were forced to sit up and pay attention to the man responsible for making them laugh so hard. Not only is the sketch edgy, but it also showcases the silliness of racism as an idea, how anyone is susceptible to being racist, and juggles the subject while remaining humorous. It’s very difficult...

Though the confusingly named initiative “FX on Hulu” is on its way out, FX is still bringing premium television to Hulu in the meantime.
Hulu’s list of new releases for April 2022 is highlighted by FX limited series Under the Banner of Heaven. This adaptation of the non-fiction book by John Krakauer stars Andrew Garfield as a Mormon police detective whose faith is shaken when investigating a murder involving the church.
It’s not all just FX on the TV side of things for Hulu this month, however. The streamer is debuting second seasons of its series The Hardy Boys (April 6) and Woke (April 8). There isn’t much to report from Hulu’s original movies arm aside from true crime documentary Captive Audience on April 21. But that doc about one family’s 50-year journey for justice sounds like a must-watch.

In his first series regular role since 2014, Martin Lawrence has signed on to star in the English-language adaptation of the acclaimed Israeli Hot original series “Nehama,” from Topic Studios.

When his wife suddenly dies, he must decide whether he should pursue his dream and risk losing his kids — who are lost without their mother. Described as “hilarious, intelligent, and raw,” the series examines what it means “to seek pleasure and find comfort in the face of tragedy and tackles the timeless challenge of ‘wanting to have it all’ from a uniquely male perspective, with some twists along the way.”

Hulu’s list of new releases for June 2021 is highlighted by a host of useful library titles and one fascinating original film.
The original film in question is the one that lends its delightful photo of Pierce Brosnan delivering a baby to this post. False Positive stars and was written by Ilana Glazer (Broad City). It sounds like a really fun, creepy time with a synopsis that reads: “After months of trying and failing to get pregnant, Lucy (Glazer) and Adrian (Justin Theroux) finally find their dream fertility doctor in the illustrious Dr. Hindle (Pierce Brosnan). But after becoming pregnant with a healthy baby girl, Lucy begins to notice something sinister through Hindle’s gleaming charm, and she sets out to uncover the unsettling truth about him, and her own “birth story.” Cool!
Hulu’s other original offerings aren’t too inspiring this month. Only Love, Victor season 2 on June 11 moves the needle much.

The first month of a new year is a good time to make a new impression. And that’s just what Netflix seems set on doing with its list of new releases for January 2021.
The streamer is coming out strong with a third season of Cobra Kai, formerly of YouTube Premium. The next installment in Daniel Larusso and Johnny Lawrence’s story is set to arrive…eventually. Netflix has not unveiled a released date yet but it will be during this month. While Cobra Kai is the highlight among Netflix’ original series, it’s not the only one by a long shot. Last year’s fun Jurassic World: Camp Cretaceous returns for a second season on Jan. 22 and it will be accompanied by Fate: The Winx Saga. Also, if you’re a fan of things that will one day be .gif’ed to death, the Nicolas Cage-hosted History of Swear Words drops on Jan.

January is usually referred to as the theatrical industry’s dumping ground, where projects destined to fail are shoved out into the world to die a slow and painful death at the box office. Obviously, next month could see almost every new release face a similar fate as business is still showing no signs of recovery, but Netflix are looking to buck the trend and rehabilitate January’s reputation as a safe haven for fresh content, and the streaming service have some major original movies and TV shows on the horizon.
The most exciting without a doubt is History of Swear Words, which sees Nicolas Cage hosting a six-episode series that delves into the origins and multiple uses of profanity. Beyoncé Had Two Wardrobe Malfunctions This Weekend Which is Two More Than She’s Ever Had in Her Life
They don’t call Beyoncé Queen Bey for nothing. After all, this is a woman who is not only synonymous with the hashtag #flawless, but has cultivated a public persona so expertly curated and presented that she and her husband Jay Z have often been accused of being leaders of the Illuminati. But on Saturday, the Lemonade singer gave us all proof that she is in fact human just like the rest of us (well, aside from the whole multi-millionaire, most famous woman in the world thing), suffering a minor wardrobe malfunction as she grabbed a meal after her show.

Next month, Netflix offers up a big selection of films of all stripes — modern to classic, animated to live action, Best Picture winners to teen phenomenons — and we’ve picked seven that you should watch as soon as humanly possible, either for the first time or as part of a nostalgic little binge. Enjoy.
1. “Unforgiven” (available October 1)
The winner of four Oscars, including Best Picture, Clint Eastwood’s 1992 film “Unforgiven” is the last Western he directed and starred in, and he made it count. About an aging outlaw tasked with one final job, the film examines the myths of the West and how they’re perverted and distorted over time, as well as the contradictions within established national archetypes. It’s arguably Eastwood’s defining masterpiece, and one of the very best films of the 90s. See it immediately.
2. “Dazed and Confused” (available October 1)

Another month is on its way, and that means another round of movies and television heading to Netflix. October is one of the more stacked months for the service in recent memory, and plenty of originals and non-originals will be streaming very soon. Let’s take a look at what’s coming and going on Netflix in October 2016. Titles in bold are my personal recommendations to check out either when they arrive or before they leave. Coming in October 2016 October 1 A Cinderella Story (2004) Barbershop 2: Back in Business (2004) Blue Streak (1999) Breakfast at Tiffany’s (1961)

In a blink of an eye it’ll be October. The air will turn crisp, the leaves will turn beautiful shades of orange, and you’ll get to crack out your favorite sweatshirt (unless you live in Los Angeles like me, in which case it’ll be 90 and you’ll sweat involuntarily). But rather than playing outside, what you really want to do is watch Netflix. October presents a whole new list of viewing opportunities with classics like Breakfast at Tiffany’s and Patton. If you choose to skip a day of work, what could be better than Ferris Bueller’s Day Off or Snow Day? And then there are no shortage of Netflix originals that are being added. The ones I’m looking most forward to are Mascots from Christopher Guest (Spinal Tap, Best in Show) and the third season of the under-appreciated Mr. Peabody and Sherman Show. For...

Failure is the name of the game here. This is an in-depth look at some of the most common reasons that heists in films go wrong.
Heists in films rarely go right. In fact, the heist gone bad is a plot device that has been used over and over for decades. It adds drama. It adds tension. It adds excitement as the crooks run from the law. Often times, that’s what makes a heist movie so fun to watch, seeing how the characters get themselves out of a tight situation. A perfect heist can be interesting to watch, but doesn’t really enhance or create much conflict between characters by itself. That’s why heists gone wrong are much more frequent in film than heists which go off without a flaw.

What's a newly minted Best Actress Oscar winner's first move? If you're Cate Blanchett, the answer is simple: get inked. The Aussie actress, 44, hit the Shamrock Social Club in West Hollywood the day after taking home the trophy for her role in Blue Jasmine. And she came with a friend and fellow nominee: American Hustle's Amy Adams, 39. The two women were also joined by their significant others - Adams's fiancé Darren Le Gallo and Blanchett's husband Andrew Upton. Blanchett left the parlor sporting a black bandage on her left wrist. What might the new ink be? The stars' reps declined to comment,...

It looks like both John Travolta and Idina Menzel are going to let it go. In the days since Travolta first stepped in front of a microphone at Sunday's Oscars and mangled the Frozen star's name in front of 43 million people, the artist once known as Adele Dazeem has become an Internet phenomenon. Now, Travolta is speaking about the gaffe for the first time. "I've been beating myself up all day," the Pulp Fiction star said in a statement released Tuesday. It's generated some classics and more than a few stinkers, but too many buddy-cop films are simply boring

2 Guns shows that the cop buddy movie has flatlined. It only took 24 hours for the film to vanish from my mind – and I took notes. Yes, it's the umpteenth buddy-cop retread, where two wily but likable antagonists are forced to team up to fulfil their competing agendas. Mark Wahlberg and Denzel Washington play undercover operatives posing as drug traffickers in order to snag Edward James Olmos's Latin drug lord. Their chemistry and fast-talking effervescence are instantly appealing: Washington the swaggeringly confident dandy, and Wahlberg all nerves, jitters and querulousness.
But as usual, the problem is the formula, not the duo. Diverting as the banter is, there's no dodging the fact that Walter Hill's 48 Hrs has officially now been remade for the bazillionth time in 31 years.

We know what you're thinking: Another day, another buddy-cop movie with a few laugh-worthy sprinkles on top of a plot you could totally one-click to generate online? Well, yes. There's that ... but if you're still willing to hop in and take a seat, there are some pretty fun sights to be seen on this little "Ride Along," if this first trailer is any indication.
Presenting Ben (Kevin Hart), a high-school security guard who desperately wants the approval of his hopeful-fiancée Angela (Tika Sumpter)'s macho big brother James (Ice Cube). Problem is, James just so happens to be this big-shot, no-nonsense detective at the Atlanta Police Department who doesn't think Benny Boy's up to the job of looking after his precious little sis. But whaddya know, the opportunity to impress arises once Ben gets himself called up to fight real crimes in the Atl at long last! Win, right? Not so fast.

Fox's animated "Ice Age: Continental Drift" heated up the overseas box office this weekend, raking in $78 milion and finishing No. 1 in all 34 markets in which it opened. In an interview with Empire magazine, producer Toby Jaffe (Total Recall, Blue Streak) confirmed that he's working on a "Starship Troopers" reboot, adding that the goal is to make the new movie less violent. "The more expensive a film is, the harder it is now to make it that violent," he explained. "With ['Total Recall'] in particular, we made a conscious choice to keep it tonally closer to something like 'Minority Report.' It gives the studio, and us as producers, the opportunity to reintroduce it in a new way." But even though the goal will likely be to go for a PG-13 rating, Jaffe said that the bigger budget will allow the filmmakers to include a lot of the elements from Robert Heinlein's book. "We have the ability to do so much more now," he said. "We can do the Jump Suits [armored exoskeletons from Heinlein's novel], for example, which I don't think they could have done before.

With news yesterday that David Fincher was battling over an already $100 million budget on the original Netflix series "House of Cards," it now appears the rental/streaming company are interested in one of the most expensive shows already airing on television -- "Terra Nova." Fox canceled the show earlier this week but Netflix are rumored to be in talks with the network over reviving the show in the same way they will with another canceled Fox property -- "Arrested Development." The show reportedly performs well on DVR, so Netflix may represent the perfect new home for the sci-fi series.

Having spent the last year sat in screening rooms and cinemas watching over 200 of 2011′s cinematic offerings, it stands to reason that I’m going to have to sit through a fair share of duds. As I had seen the vast majority of the key Oscar plays before November, I spent the latter part of the year dedicating myself to seeking out the worst, most lowest common denominator fare ripe for a skewering, and with these twenty dreadful pictures, we have what are, in my opinion, the 20 biggest train wrecks of 2011. Note that Bucky Larson: Born to Be a Star is still awaiting worldwide DVD release and didn’t get distribution in the U.K., so that’s one that I was forced to avoid, but I’m assured that it’s irredeemably horrible nevertheless. Anyway, on with the list…

When the trailer for the Chris Pine/Tom Hardy/Reese Witherspoon action romance This Means War was set upon the world earlier this month, I hoped it would be McG‘s swan song. But the blockbuster director behind Terminator: Salvation and Charlie’s Angels is getting more work and The Hollywood Reporter has the scoop on what his next film may be.
The director has begun negotiations with Summit Entertainment to step behind the camera for their thriller Puzzle Palace. The film comes from the mind of David Guggenheim, who has another thriller coming out next spring with Safe House starring Ryan Reynolds and Denzel Washington. We’ll get a glimpse of that one with the first trailer before Tower Heist next week, but one can read a synopsis of Puzzle Palace below.
The story centers on a lawyer and the son of a veteran police officer who learns his father is framed for murder.

Two documentaries by Mark Rappaport reach DVD in the UK for the first time with the Bounty Films’ releases of Rock Hudson’s Home Movies & The Silver Screen: Color Me Lavender.
The first, Rock Hudson’s Home Movies, is something of an experiment from Rappaport, as he creates a collage of clips from Rock Hudson’s cinematic output with actor Eric Farr as Rock Hudson providing narration for the clips speaking in something approaching the first person. This quasi-documentary approach is an interesting one to watch but it is nowhere near as successful in practice as it needs to be.
Whilst the form letting the content down could be just a minor problem, the weak content results in the form actually failing to bring life to the highly disappointing content. Rappaport’s discussion piece surrounding the duality in Hudson’s on screen heterosexual roles and his off screen homosexual life...

Michael York dashes onto the cinematic scene as the blundering but very enthusiastic D'Artagnan in Richard Lester's hugely enjoyable period comic romp. The late great Roy Kinnear is the long-suffering vassal of aristocratic swordsmen Oliver Reed, Richard Chamberlain and Frank Finlay, whilst Raquel Welch and Faye Dunaway shine as heroine and villainess, respectively. It's back to the Xxxxxxxxl dresses for Martin Lawrence for the third time. Better not call this unfunny comedy threesome a trilogy, though, warns Peter Bradshaw
Like Alan Dershowitz, the lawyer famous for defending some of the most questionable clients, I have in the past made a case for the comedian Martin Lawrence. I have giggled guiltily at his medieval romp Black Knight. I have chortled at Blue Streak. And the sheer, confrontational crassness of his Big Momma movies – in which he plays an FBI agent who repeatedly finds it expedient to disguise himself as a very fat woman – occasionally gets a jaded laugh. But there must have been moments when Dershowitz, having made an impassioned plea to the judge, turned round to find his client loudly planning his next robbery or murder on the phone. That is kind of how I feel now. This is the third in … well,...
