The significance of the Nuremberg trials cannot be overstated, as they marked a watershed in international law. Let’s delve into the historical context and authenticity of the drama that attempts to capture this monumental event. Setting the Stage with History The Nuremberg trials were a series of military tribunals held after...

Scream and Ready or Not producer James Vanderbilt is teaming up with Russell Crowe, Rami Malek, and Michael Shannon for Nuremberg, a historical drama set in post-war Germany. Arranged by Bluestone Entertainment and Walden Media, the project is inspired by Jack El Hai’s book The Nazi and the Psychiatrist. Vanderbilt directs from a script he wrote, with production starting in February in Hungary.
According to Deadline, Nuremberg “focuses on the American psychiatrist Douglas Kelley (Malek), who is tasked with determining whether Nazi prisoners are fit to stand trial for their war crimes, and finds himself in a complex battle of wits with Hermann Göring (Crowe), Hitler’s right-hand man.” Shannon plays Supreme Court Justice Robert H. Jackson, the chief prosecutor of the Nuremberg trials.

When Logan Roy yells “F*ck off!” you get a good feeling he means it. And when his portrayer, Brian Cox, says that “woke culture is truly awful”, you know he’s not kidding around.
Speaking with Piers Morgan on his TalkTV show, Brian Cox went after millennials, explaining how their self-righteousness disgusts him. “I think [social media] points out too readily inadequacies. The whole woke culture is truly awful…and the shaming culture. I don’t know where it comes from. Who are the arbiters of this shaming? And it’s very hard to pin them down, and, it turns out, it’s usually a bunch of millennials. And who gave them the halos? I suppose in a way they’re probably saying, ‘Well you’ve all screwed it up so we may as well do something about it.’ But it’s from the wrong principle. It comes from the wrong place.

Actor Russell Crowe doesn’t want to be asked anything about ‘Gladiator 2’. The actor said that he should be paid for the amount of questions he asked about a film he is not even in. The actor was speaking to the media at the Karlovy Vary Film Festival, reports Variety. He said: “It has nothing to do with me. In that world, I am dead. Six feet under. But I do admit to a certain tinge of jealousy, because it reminds me of when I was younger and what it meant for me, in my life.”
The actor further mentioned, quoted by Variety: “I don’t know anything about the cast, I don’t know anything about the plot. I am dead! But I know that if Ridley has decided to do a second part of the story, over 20 years later, he must have had very strong reasons. I...

Even though he’s not in Ridley Scott’s sequel to Gladiator, Russell Crowe can’t give an interview without anyone asking him questions about it. While appearing at the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival, Crowe (via THR) weighed in on being constantly asked about Gladiator 2.
“They should be f*cking paying me for the amount of questions I get asked about the f*cking film that I am not even in,” adding, “in that world, I’m dead, six feet under. And that’s that.” However, he also thinks the movie is bound to be extraordinary. “If Ridley has decided to do a second part … he will have really strong reasons…I couldn’t think of that movie being less than absolutely spectacular.” He even admitted to a “twinge of jealousy” over the film as it reminds him of his younger days.

“The Boys” season three continued to be as bloody, brilliant, and bloody brilliant as ever as the Amazon Prime Video series ramped it up another notch with its acclaimed superhero satire.
The show — a provocative, dark take on superheroes — follows Karl Urban‘s Billy Butcher and Jack Quaid‘s Hughie as members of a team hoping to take down the corrupt, evil superheroes and their parent company/creators, Vought International. That company is headed up by a PR-obsessed superhero team called The Seven, led by Anthony Starr‘s Homelander. Since season one, Butcher and co have tried their utmost to reveal the sins of The Seven to the world but, in season three, they went to new extremes to realize their goals and Butcher was pushed to his limit.
As Butcher, Urban is the gruff, swaggering beating heart of the show. Blood-pumping, testosterone-flying — Urban plays Butcher like Jack Sparrow as a football hooligan.

A generation may see Brian Cox only as Logan Roy, the patriarch of "Succession," but there's a lot more to the Scottish actor than HBO's hit black comedy. Cox is established not just in television but on stage and in film, where he's worked with directors such as Wes Anderson, David Fincher, Michael Mann, Spike Lee, and Spike Jonze.
Cox's venerable reign at the top of Hollywood's B-list -- on his way to the A-list -- has been truly workmanlike, encompassing some 240-plus acting credits (via IMDb). In 2001, Cox won an Emmy for his performance as Hermann Göring in the TV movie "Nuremberg." Two years later, Queen Elizabeth II appointed him Commander of the British Empire, and then, in 2007, the UK Film Council recognized Cox as among the top 10 most powerful British actors in Hollywood (via PBS).

Since then, he’s earned four additional Best Drama Supporting Actor bids for his portrayal of the character on the AMC series’ acclaimed prequel “Better Call Saul.” In 2015, his first bid for the spin-off entered him in the history books: He became the first actor to be nominated in the category for three different shows (he received a nomination in 1989 for his performance as Frank McPike on the CBS drama “Wiseguy”). John Wayne and Montgomery Clift were both monumental actors that had a true impact on Hollywood and the field of cinema. However, they had contrasting images and represented an entirely different type of movie star. It played out wonderfully on the silver screen in Red River, but one of the most surprising behind-the-scenes facts is that they were each paid the same amount in a “startling” sum for a newcomer.

Having already won a Golden Globe and a BAFTA Award for his portrayal of Elvis Presley in “Elvis,” Austin Butler is on a solid path to triumphing on his first Oscar nomination. His film, which covers the entirety of the titular rock star’s two-decade career, boasts a talented cast that includes past Oscar winner Tom Hanks, who collected back-to-back Best Actor trophies for “Philadelphia” (1994) and “Forrest Gump” (1995). He missed out on a supporting bid for “Elvis,” but if Butler clinches the lead award, Hanks will become the 15th man to have acted in a film that won the same Oscar he previously received.
Hanks has a total of five Best Actor nominations to his name, with the three unsuccessful ones having come for his work in “Big” (1989), “Saving Private Ryan” (1999), and “Cast Away” (2001). Until Butler was recognized for “Elvis,” Hanks had never appeared in a film for which someone...

When The New Yorker's Pauline Kael wrote of Don Siegel's "Dirty Harry" in 1971 that the American cop thriller "has always had a fascist potential, and it has finally surfaced," she kicked off a fierce debate about the genre that still roils today.
Taken at face value, it's difficult to dispute that the film is meant to titillate viewers with the ultimate, judge-jury-executioner justice pursued and dispensed by Clint Eastwood's Harry Callahan. He despises the Miranda Warning, and complains that the United States' judicial system has been corrupted to favor the rights of criminals. The screenplay, credited to Harry Julian Fink, R.M. Fink, and Dean Riesner, stacks the deck to a ludicrous degree by having Andrew Robinson's Scorpio Killer orchestrate an act of police brutality late in the movie to get Callahan kicked off the case. At this moment, it feels like we're meant to throw our hands...

Although the “Succession” season three finale “All the Bells Say” aired over eight months ago, viewers most certainly have not forgotten those shocking final minutes in which Brian Cox’s Logan Roy goes “full f—ng beast” on his on-screen children. For his performance as the volcanic and savvy patriarch of the Roy family on the HBO series, the veteran performer just earned his second Emmy nomination for Drama Actor. He previously won for miniseries “Nuremberg” in 2001 and received a guest bid for “Frasier” in 2002.
Just as Logan Roy and his son Kendall battle each other all throughout the third season of “Succession,” Cox will once again face off against his costar Jeremy Strong, who won when they squared off the first time in 2020. He will similarly rematch with Jason Bateman for the final season of “Ozark” and try to hold off challenges from Bob Odenkirk on his fifth nomination...

Jason Bateman took home his first and to date only Emmy three years ago — for directing the opener of “Ozark’s” second season. Even though the multihyphenate is primarily known as an actor, he has yet to win an Emmy for acting, losing twice for “Arrested Development” in Best Comedy Actor, once for “The Outsider” in Best Drama Guest Actor (2020) and three times for “Ozark” itself in Best Drama Actor (2018-2020). Will he, nominated for the fourth time in a row for leading “Ozark” as cartel launderer Marty Byrde, finally get his due from the TV academy’s acting branch this year?
His Best Drama Actor nomination is one of three he pocketed for the fourth and final season of the Netflix series this year, earning the other two as one of the gritty drama’s executive producers as part of its third consecutive drama series nom, and as the...

Brian Cox shudders to think what path his life would have taken had he not become an actor. “I think because I love traveling, I would’ve probably joined something like the Merchant Navy,” said the burly Scottish actor during a Washington Post Zoom conversation about his autobiography, “Putting the Rabbit in the Hat.” “I would’ve probably been an assistant cook or something and traveled around the world. I did actually think of the alternative [to acting] but then I put the alternative away because I knew I was going to do what I was going to do, come hell or high water.”
Thank goodness, he put the alternative away because the world would have been robbed of one of the most acclaimed actors who has triumphed on stage, screen and television. He was chilling as the first Hannibal Lecter in Michael Mann’s 1986 “Manhunter.” He was terrifying in his Emmy...

After two years of egregious snubs, the “Succession” Og Brian Cox finally has a Screen Actors Guild Award nomination for the acclaimed HBO series. Cox’s performance as the volcanic billionaire and media mogul Logan Roy netted him an Emmy nomination last year and now two SAG Award bids in both the drama actor and ensemble categories.
Although Cox has never won a SAG Award, he has one of the highest nominations tallies of his fellow contenders, who include two of his four onscreen children. In addition to this year’s bids for “Succession,” Cox has three others for “Nuremberg” and as an ensemble member of the film “Adaptation” and series “Deadwood.” His five citations tie him with Billy Crudup, a double nominee for “The Morning Show” this year and a past ensemble winner for “Spotlight.” Cox’s costars Jeremy Strong and Kieran Culkin are past nominees as well: Strong...

One year ago, “Schitt’s Creek” became the second TV series for which two men simultaneously received Screen Actors Guild award bids for playing father and son. As Johnny and David Rose, Eugene Levy and Dan Levy followed the example set by “Everybody Loves Raymond” pair Peter Boyle and Ray Romano in 2002. Until this year, these were the only such cases in SAG Awards history. Now, “Succession” star Brian Cox and his TV sons Kieran Culkin and Jeremy Strong have broken new ground as the first ones to achieve this feat on the drama side. After winning an Emmy against Cox in 2020, Strong is now challenged with defending his honor by earning the esteem of his acting peers.
Aside from his two costars, Strong faces Billy Crudup (“The Morning Show”) and Lee Jung-jae (“Squid Game”) in this year’s drama actor category. Both Culkin and Lee are SAG Award newcomers, while...

Last September, the South Korean series “Squid Game” soared to global phenomenon status as millions of Netflix viewers made it the streamer’s most-watched show ever. Now that the winter awards season has begun, the popular program has proven its merit by amassing four Screen Actors Guild award nominations, including one for star Lee Jung-jae. This not only makes Lee the first Asian-born drama actor nominee, but also the first male TV performer to individually earn SAG Award recognition for a fully non-English language role.
Lee’s challengers in the drama actor contest are Billy Crudup (“The Morning Show”) and “Succession” trio Brian Cox, Kieran Culkin and Jeremy Strong. Crudup is the only one to have contended for this award before, having first been recognized for the same role in 2020. He and Strong have each triumphed once in the film ensemble category for “Spotlight” (2016) and “The Trial of the Chicago 7” (2021), respectively.

In the 28-year history of the Screen Actors Guild Awards, there have been two instances of costar trios being nominated against each other in the drama actress category. Lorraine Bracco, Edie Falco and Nancy Marchand (“The Sopranos”) set that precedent in 2000 and were followed just last year by Gillian Anderson, Olivia Colman and Emma Corrin (“The Crown”). Until this year, there were no cases on the male side, but now, “Succession” stars Kieran Culkin, Brian Cox and Jeremy Strong constitute the first. Of the three, Culkin is the only SAG Award newcomer, and that freshman status may help him stand out to voters.
In addition to his two cast mates, Culkin’s challengers in the drama actor race include Billy Crudup (“The Morning Show”) and Lee Jung-jae (“Squid Game”). All are new to the category except for Crudup, who was nominated here for the same role in 2020. He and Strong...

Just one month after its inaugural season finale, “The Morning Show” swiftly proved its worth by scoring three 2020 Screen Actors Guild Award nominations for cast members Jennifer Aniston, Steve Carell and Billy Crudup. Aniston went on to win the drama actress race, but the men’s head-to-head battle ended in a draw when they both fell to Peter Dinklage (“Game of Thrones”). Now, Aniston is in the running for a second solo trophy, and Crudup has been given another shot at his first. Since he is a category veteran and Carell and Dinklage are out of the picture, he could be on a secure path to victory this time.
In the drama actor race, Crudup faces Lee Jung-jae (“Squid Game”) and “Succession” trio Brian Cox, Kieran Culkin and Jeremy Strong, all of whom are category first-timers. Culkin and Lee are total SAG Award newcomers, while Cox previously garnered two TV...

Exactly six decades ago, the 34th Oscars ceremony was dominated by Jerome Robbins and Robert Wise’s “West Side Story,” which won 10 of its 11 races, including Best Picture; it lost the Adapted Screenplay prize to “Judgment at Nuremberg”). The classic Broadway musical has been adapted into a new film directed by Steven Spielberg. If Oscar history repeats itself, the two versions of “West Side Story” will be the only pair of Best Picture champs to have derived from the same source.
According to our odds, “West Side Story” ranks third in the Best Picture race behind only “The Power of the Dog” and “Belfast.” Since 1930, a total of 48 musical films have contended for Best Picture and 10, including the original “West Side Story,” have triumphed. Take a scroll through our gallery to find out which other classic musicals won the top prize at the Academy Awards and how they fared in other categories.

Brian Cox, the Scottish actor known for playing formidable media baron Logan Roy on HBO’s “Succession,” is making his directorial debut in film with “Glenrothan.” The project is being co-developed by Lionsgate and London-based “Keeping Faith” producer Nevision.
The Emmy, Golden Globe and Olivier Award-winning “Succession” actor will also star in the film, which is billed as a “love letter to Scotland.” The project marks the second time Cox is going behind the camera: He previously directed an episode of HBO series “Oz” in 2000.
“Glenrothan” is set in a distillery town in the Scottish Highlands, and tells the story of two estranged brothers reuniting in the land of their birth. The last time they spoke was on the day of their mother’s funeral when, following a violent exchange with their father, the younger of the two left their Highland home for America. Forty years later, the brothers finally reunite,...

Covid has played havoc with production schedules across the globe, and for the first major Russian movie to shoot on location in Europe since the pandemic struck last year, it’s been a case study in compromise and adaptation.
Restrictions on crew movements, the director’s Covid infection and a delay by local authorities in granting permission to shoot on location in Germany have combined to push the schedule of the €10 million ($11.8 million) historical drama “Nuremberg” back by a year.
The film — an international co-production with Russia, the Czech Republic, Germany and the U.K. — incorporated Covid safety protocols in order to shoot on location near Prague, which is buzzing with productions right now. But ambitious plans to shoot in the actual prison that housed top Nazis during the post-wwii Nuremberg trials in 1946 have been put on hold after local authorities deemed the idea too risky as Covid cases rose in Germany.

Sadly, we now reach the finale of the Montgomery Clift filmography. The shroud of sadness and tragedy that hung over Clift's second act in motion pictures (Raintree County through Freud) have often obscured the quality of some of the films. Despite the broken souls and grim reaper feeling exuded by The Misfits and Judgment at Nuremberg in particular -- it's part of their subject matter, after all -- Clift's acting prowess was actually on the rise again.
His declining health and addictions interfered. After Freud there was another four year intermission from the silver screen as there'd been just after From Here to Eternity. With 1966's The Defector the curtain raised again and filming went smoothly for a change. But no third act came. Both Clift (then 45) and his director Raoul Lévy (then just 44) died that year, Clift of a heart attack shortly before the movie's release and Levy,...

Just like on “Succession,” the Number One Boy got the better of Logan Roy (for now). Jeremy Strong beat his TV father Brian Cox for the Best Drama Actor Emmy on Sunday, becoming just the sixth person to topple a co-star in the category.
The “Succession” twosome were the 17th pair of co-star drama actor nominees, but winning against a co-star has proven to be difficult. The only drama actor champs who’ve managed to do it are “I Spy’s” Bill Cosby, who went 3-0 against Robert Culp from 1966-68; “St. Elsewhere’s” Ed Flanders and William Daniels, who beat each other (Flanders in 1983 and Daniels in 1985 and ’86); Dennis Franz, who trump two “NYPD Blue” partners, David Caruso (1994) and Jimmy Smits; and “This Is Us'” Sterling K. Brown, who defeated Milo Ventimiglia on their first go-around in 2017.

A returning champ vs. another past winner sets up the possibility of a repeat victor for Lead Actor in a Drama Series, but there are a couple of veterans in the mix who have 13 acting Emmy nods between them and no win, so sentiment could be a factor. “I will win,” Brian Cox’s Logan Roy maniacally roars at his most trusted but nevertheless doubting advisors in “Hunting,” the second season episode of HBO’s “Succession” that he has submitted for Emmy Awards consideration. How vicious is the Roy family from HBO’s “Succession”? Brian Cox, who plays powerful patriarch Logan Roy, and Jeremy Strong (as his son Kendall Roy) managed to help push out two mainstays in the Emmys’ lead drama actor category this year: Bob Odenkirk (“Better Call Saul”) and Milo Ventimiglia (“This Is Us”). Odenkirk was nominated four times, while Ventimiglia earned three consecutive nods — but neither are in the mix this time out, now that Cox and Strong have joined the race. Also new to the field, and perhaps the biggest surprise this year, is Steve Carell. Like Cox and Strong, Carell plays a despicable media figure in “The Morning Show”: disgraced news anchor Mitch Kessler, whose sexual misconduct leads to the series’ Season 1 plot. Meanwhile, returning are last year’s category winner Billy Porter (“Pose”), 2017 victor Sterling K. Brown (“This Is Us”) and Jason Bateman, in his third consecutive nod for “Ozark.

Logan Roy and his Number One Boy’s new battleground? The Emmys. Brian Cox and Jeremy Strong both nabbed Best Drama Actor nominations Tuesday for “Succession” to become the 17th pair of co-stars to be nominated together.
The two are up against Jason Bateman (“Ozark”), Steve Carell (“Better Call Saul”), reigning champ Billy Porter (“Pose”) and former champ Sterling K. Brown (“This Is Us”).
Cox’s and Strong’s bids mark the fourth year in a row that co-stars have made the cut in this category. “This Is Us” scored nominations for Brown and Milo Ventimiglia from 2017-19, and “Westworld” fielded Ed Harris and Jeffrey Wright in 2018.
Before that, “True Detective,” competing as a drama for its first season, ended a 12-year dry spell with bids for Woody Harrelson and Matthew McConaughey in 2014. “Six Feet Under” was the last show to do so prior to that in 2002 with Michael C. Hall and Peter Krause.

Brian Cox has taken home the award for best actor in a drama television series at the 2020 Golden Globe Awards.
During the 77th annual awards show on Sunday evening, Cox was nominated alongside Kit Harington (Game of Thrones), Rami Malek (Mr. Robot), Tobias Menzies (The Crown) and Billy Porter (Pose). This was the first Golden Globe nomination for Harington, the second for Cox, Menzies and Porter, and the fourth for Malek.
“I’m sorry — I mean, this kind of event does your head in. No, it really does. It does your head in,” said Cox, who dedicated the award to showrunner Jesse Armstrong.
