Brian McConnachie, the Emmy-winning writer with the offbeat sense of humor who worked on Sctv Network and Saturday Night Live and appeared in Caddyshack and several films for Woody Allen, has died. He was 81.
McConnachie died Friday of complications from Parkinson’s disease in Venice, Florida, Michael Gerber, editor and publisher of The American Bystander, told The Hollywood Reporter. The duo relaunched the humor magazine in 2015 after McConnachie — an original staff member at National Lampoon — originally got it going in 1981.
“Every day, on every page, he has been our North Star,” Gerber said in a statement. “From his days at National Lampoon, Brian was ‘every comedy writer’s favorite comedy writer,’ crafting an unmistakable one-of-a-kind laid-back eccentricity that inspired generations.
“He is the only person I know who wrote for the Holy Trinity of Seventies Comedy — National Lampoon, SNL and Sctv. This speaks to not only his writing talent, but...

Oscar-nominated actor Ryan O’Neal, who came to prominence on TV’s “Peyton Place” and became a top star of the 1970s in films including “Love Story,” “What’s Up, Doc?,” “Paper Moon” and “Barry Lyndon,” died Friday, his son Patrick said on Instagram. He was 82.
O’Neal was diagnosed with chronic leukemia in 2001 and with prostate cancer in 2012.
“Ryan was a very generous man who has always been there to help his loved ones for decade upon decade,” his son wrote. “My dad was 82, and lived a kick ass life. I hope the first thing he brags about in Heaven is how he sparred 2 rounds with Joe Frazier in 1966, on national TV, with Muhammad Ali doing the commentary, and went toe to toe with Smokin’ Joe.”
In later years, O’Neal’s acting work often took a backseat to media coverage on his personal travails, involving his combative relationship with longtime companion Farrah Fawcett,...

For this year’s Icons & Influences issue, we asked 10 artists to pay tribute to the women who have shaped their sound, provided an example, and inspired them to break down barriers. Viral Subway Singer Brings His Soulful Rendition of 'Unchained Melody' to America's Got Talent Stage
In late 2016, Mike Yung amassed over 40 million views on YouTube after a video of him singing in the New York City subway went viral.
And after belting out classic hits at the station on 23rd and Sixth Avenue, the soulful singer brought his talents to the America’s Got Talent stage. In an exclusive clip from Tuesday’s episode, Yung belts out the same song that made him famous: Righteous Brothers’ 1965 hit “Unchained Melody.”
“I’ve been singing in the subway for roughly 37 years,” he tells judges Simon Cowell, Mel B, Heidi Klum and Howie Mandel.
Later adding, “Success is what you make it right?...

A Utah mom battling breast, lung and bone cancer is finally home with her family for the holidays.
Kim Power Stilson, who has been using a wheelchair since August, never thought she’d be able to spend Christmas in her two-story house in Orem. Because the structure did not accommodate her wheelchair, the 52-year-old had been staying at a friend’s accessible house with husband, Chad Stilson.
But in December, the mother of three got the surprise of a lifetime when hundreds of neighbors, friends and family surprised her with a renovated home — complete with a bedroom and bathroom on the ground floor.

Today is Boxing Day. According to Wikipedia “Boxing Day is a holiday traditionally celebrated the day following Christmas Day, when servants and tradespeople would receive gifts, known as a ‘Christmas box’ from their bosses or employers… in the United Kingdom, Canada, Hong Kong, Australia, New Zealand, Kenya, South Africa, Guyana, Trinidad and Tobago, Jamaica and other Commonwealth nations, as well as Norway, the Netherlands and Sweden.”
Which is, as the British say, bollocks. With no history or evidence whatsoever, I consider Boxing Day to be the holiday in which we put all our unwanted gifts into a box they came in and return them to the , store for something we want. And since that works better as a premise for this column, that’s what I’m going with.
Here are some trends from 2014 popular culture that I would like to see returned and exchanged for something better:

She doesn’t make many public appearances these days so when Kim Novak showed up at the 86th Academy Awards to present a trophy last night (March 2), the Twitterverse took note.

Meanwhile, “Parks and Recreation” actress Rhetta snarked, “Kim Novak giving Jaqueline Bisset a run for her ‘crazy stage antics’ money. #YouCantHandleMcConaugheysWeed.”
And fellow “Parks” star Billy Eichner jumped to Kim’s defense- “You Know What Guys Kim Novak Is 81 And She Didnt Fall Down Twice Unlike Some Other People I Know.”

Kim Novak caused a firestorm on Twitter Sunday night when the 81-year-old actress appeared at the Oscars to present the award to Best Animated Feature with Matthew McConaughey.
Kim Novak's Face Draws Nasty Tweets
Novak, best known for her iconic role in Alfred Hitchcock’s Vertigo (1958), walked onstage and viewers immediately took to Twitter to comment on Novak’s appearance. With bright, tight, round cheeks and a tight jaw, it can be assumed that she has had some plastic surgery as she has gotten older. Her stunned appearance and raspy voice were all a bit confusing. In addition, it didn’t seem like she was reading off the teleprompter – one moment she made a reference to McConaughey’s role in Magic Mike.
Viewers jumped on Novak, commenting on everything from her voice to her supposed plastic surgery. Comedians jumped on the bandwagon as well, though most were slightly less cruel.

Daniel Algrant.s career consists of three films produced with nearly a decade in between each project, as he followed 2002.s mediocre crime drama People I Know with this year.s biopic Greetings From Tim Buckley. But instead of waiting until 2022 to begin work on something else, he is lining up another interesting music-based film called Little Rootie Tootie, which has attracted the likes of Christopher Walken and Lenny Kravitz as its leads. I assume the film will eventually add the subtitle Are You Gonna Go My Way With More Cowbell. According to Deadline, the film will follow Walken as Sonny, a lifelong jazz pianist mourning the recent death of his wife. As Sonny becomes increasingly destructive, his son (Kravitz) returns home from Europe, where he and his wife are successful musicians in their own right. The three of them attempt to function as a well-oriented family, but the eccentric...

Blame a 2012 Toronto Int. As Mad Men’s silver-haired Roger Sterling, John Slattery is debonair, drunken, sexy, competitive, and sentimental. He’s also, at times, a complete goof.
In writer/director Brian Savelson’s feature debut, In Our Nature, out in theaters Dec. 7, Slattery plays Gil, the estranged dad of Seth, a bearded hipster played by Zach Gilford (Friday Night Lights). When Seth brings his girlfriend, Andie, played by Jena Malone (Pride & Prejudice), to his family’s upstate New York retreat for a romantic getaway weekend, Gil shows up to the house as well — with his new, younger girlfriend Vicky, played by Gabrielle Union.

Later this month, Certain People I Know will release a self-titled new record on Michigan-based label Count Your Lucky Stars. The band fronted by Bob Nanna should be up the alley of any fans of emo-tinged indie rock—particularly those who enjoyed Nanna’s other projects Braid, Hey Mercedes, and The City On Film. The record is available for pre-order now and can be streamed this week only on The A.V. Club.

Here’s a 90 second video of Arrested Development creator Mitchell Hurwitz discussing the process of adapting the show for Netflix and hinting at the format of the new 10-episode run. If it were a day-old 90-second video of a dude talking about anything other than Arrested Development news, I would fully expect you to be like “Wats Dis Gay Shuttt Get Of The Internet” (admittttt ittttt, that’s how All of us talk). Fortunately, it Is Arrested Development news, so the proper reaction is “Yayyyy hearing more stuff about Arrested Development and Whoa There’S The Cast People I Know Slash Like Them!!!” Sidenote: Hard to believe that guy’s almost fifty. He’s aged better than Uncle Jack. (Thanks, Jenna!)...

I'm just going to say it right off the top - it’s hard for me to not be gushing about Game of Thrones. As someone who first read the books 9 years ago, it's more than a little surreal to see it being the latest literature phenomenon, following in the footsteps of the Millenium Trilogy and Twilight before it. I get a little grin on my face every time someone asks me "Have you heard of Game of Thrones?" and try not to be one of those insufferable goons who act like they have some kind of extra special credibility because they knew about it before it "sold out". But I am and I do and I can't help loving Game of Thrones, my one saving grave being that I, unlike many batshit crazy fans who would rather their favourite franchise remained an underground secret, emphatically encourage, endorse and promote...

There’s new movement over on Jake Scott’s upcoming Jeff Buckley biopic, which may or may not have been titled Mystery White Boy. We’ve already reported that Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark’s Reeve Carney is set to star as the indie rock legend, and now there’s word that Patricia Arquette has been signed to play Buckley’s mother, Mary Guibert. The role is said to be a small one, but it sounds important nonetheless. Arquette will be seen both in flashbacks to when Buckley was a child and in later years when he was an adult. And apparently she plays an important role in convincing Buckley to appear during a 1991 tribute concert to his father, “Greetings From Tim Buckley,” which was considered to be Jeff’s first public performance and kind of the launching point for what became a very notable career. This is the stuff of alt-rock legend, so...

Brothers & Sisters creator Jon Robin Baitz hasn't had a feature film produced in a few years (2006's People I Know, starring Al Pacino), but he may soon be headed back to the big screen courtesy of Broadway. Deadline reports that producers Walter Parkes and Laurie MacDonald have scooped up the movie rights to Baitz's play Other Desert Cities. Baitz himself will write the script for the adaptation, as well as co-producing with Parkes and MacDonald. Other Desert Cities tells the story of an old Hollywood couple, played on the stage by Stacy Keach and Stockard Channing, who used to be friends with Ronald and Nancy Reagan. They retire to Palm Springs, but find any plans as peaceful golden years interrupted by their two children: one a reality TV producer and the other a novelist who has written a tell-all memoir that has unleashed every closet-skeleton the family owns. It is,...

#27. Greetings from Tim Buckley - Daniel Algrant Which Jeff Buckley film will get out of the gate first? It's looking like Greetings from Tim Buckley - the non-biopic directed by Daniel Algrant (People I Know) might have the Sundance advantage as it was wrapped in the late summer. Park City's Main Street loves the movie and music tie-ins and cinematographer Andrij Parekh (Blue Valentine and Half Nelson) brought his magic to the film. Gist: Written by Algrant, Emma Sheanshang and David Brendel, this follows the true story of the days leading up to Jeff Buckley’s eminent 1991 performance at his father’s tribute concert in St. Ann’s Church. Through a romance with a young woman working at the concert, he comes to understand the father who abandoned him. Culminating in a cathartic performance of his father’s most famous songs, Jeff’s debut stuns the audience and launches his...

The Hp Touchpad is having a minor zombie renaissance right now. After last week’s announcement that the tablet device was being discontinued as part of Hp’s massive dark-night-of-the-soul restructuring, prices for the Touchpad descended into the double-digits over the weekend. According to this breathless Washington Post article, Best Buy wound up selling the discounted devices with a limit of one per customer. And, since the average iPad 2 currently starts retailing at $499, we now have pseudo-scientific proof that Apple’s competitors just need to sell roughly the same device for 80 percent off in order to compete in the tablet market.

There seems to be countless movie Snow Whites in the works (Kristen Stewart's, Lily Collins', China's, etc.). But there are only two movie projects about singer Jeff Buckley, who drowned at the age of 30 while swimming in Tennessee's Wolf River in 1997. One, Greetings from Tim Buckley, is set to star Gossip Girl's Penn Badgley as Jeff Buckley. The other, it has been announced, will star Broadway actor-singer Reeve Carney as Buckley. Carney, who played Prince Ferdinand in Helen Mirren's The Tempest and the young Ethan Hawke in Snow Falling on Cedars, is best known for his Broadway incarnation of Spider-Man in Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark. To be directed by Jake Scott, son of Ridley Scott and best known for the Kristen Stewart-James Gandolfini drama Welcome to the Rileys, this as-yet untitled Jeff Buckley project is being executive produced by Buckley's mother, Mary Guibert.

His star has been rising lately with praiseworthy turns in Easy A and a supporting role in the ensemble financial drama Margin Call (which we enjoyed quite a bit at Sundance in January), but now Penn Badgley (right) has snagged a role that should really allow him to show his talent. Smuggler Films has announced the actor will play musician Jeff Buckley, son of iconic musician Tim Buckley in Greetings from Tim Buckley. Dan Algrant (People I Know) will direct the film telling the true story of the days leading up to Jeff Buckley’s eminent 1991 performance at his father’s tribute concert in St. Ann’s Church. Through a romance with a young woman working at the concert, the younger Buckley comes to understand the father who abandoned him. The rumors are true. Penn Badgley has won the role of Jeff Buckley in a biopic about the singer's life.
The "Gossip Girl" star will play the beloved singer/songwriter in "Greetings From Tim Buckley," which is set to begin filming in New York City later this summer. The film will tell the story of the young singer as he prepares to play at Brooklyn's St. Ann's Church in 1991 during a tribute concert to his father, fellow musician Tim Buckley.
"To play a man who was singularly gifted as an artist, greatly misunderstood and mythologized as a human being ... It's something very special and sacred," Badgley said in a statement about nabbing the part.

We reported in early April that none other than Ridley Scott's son Jake had signed on to direct a biopic about the tragically deceased singer-songwriter who moved a generation of teens with his emotive voice and left only one album of much-loved songs in his wake. And while there was much talk about who should be selected to play the handsome, brooding musician - Joseph Gordon-Levitt, James Franco, Pattinson? - another Jeff Buckley film was being pulled together right under our noses and has chosen a slightly different angle with their lead actor ready to go.

The film, titled Greetings From Tim Buckley, is one of two films being made about the singer, this one though follows the days leading up to Buckley's performance at his father's tribute gig in St. Ann's Church. Over the weekend talk emerged that "Gossip Girl" and "The Stepfather" actor Penn Badgley had beaten out the likes of Robert Pattinson to play Jeff Buckley in the upcoming biopic about the late singer.
Badgley's reps quickly shot down the story, telling The Los Angeles Times that "Penn is not involved in the film at all".
Now the confusion has been cleared up - there are two Jeff Buckley movies in the works, only one of which involves Badgley. The first is being produced by Orian Williams and has the blessing of the Jeff Buckley estate.
Smuggler Films however is developing their own film, which has rights to music from the estate of Jeff's father Tim Buckley. That project has now issued a press release today confirming Badgley will star as Jeff Buckley in the project which is entitled "Greetings from Tim Buckley".

Finally, a film about the late Jeff Buckley is set and ready for production. But will fans say "Hallelujah" at the top casting choice?
Smuggler Films announced late Monday that "Gossip Girl" star Penn Badgley has won the right to play the late rocker in the upcoming film, "Greetings From Tim Buckley." The movie will follow the journey Jeff Buckley took in grappling with the legacy of his late musician father, Tim, leading up to and culminating with his legendary 1991 performance of his father's songs.
Buckley, whose one proper album, "Grace," stunned audiences and made him a cult sensation, drowned in 1997 while swimming in the Wolf River of Tennessee.
Speculation had been rife over who would win the part; based on looks, some thought it might go to James Franco, while Robert Pattinson offered the brooding musician prototype that fit Buckley's public profile.

Penn Badgely has been cast as Jeff Buckley in a upcoming biopic based on the musical artist called Geetings From Tim Buckley. Buckley was a very talented musician and was a rising star, but he died at the age of 30 in 1997. It doesn't look like this is the same biopic that director Jake Scott (Welcome to the Riley's) was working on because this film was written by Dan Algrant, Emma Sheanshang and David Brendel and is being directed by Dan Algrant (People I Know, Naked in New York). So it looks like there are two Jeff Buckley biopics in the works.
This new biopic "follows the true story of the days leading up to Jeff Buckley’s eminent 1991 performance at his father’s tribute concert in St. Ann’s Church. Through a romance with a young woman working at the concert, he comes to understand the father who abandoned him.

ChaCha put together a list of actors who have died the most in their movies. Topping the list is Robert De Niro with fifteen deaths, including ones in "Cape Fear," "Frankenstein" and "Jackie Brown." Bruce Willis also made the list and was actually killed twice by his ex-wife Demi Moore in "Mortal Thoughts" and "Charlie's Angels: Full Throttle." Brad Pitt is in top ten as well, but his deaths are a bit odd. He died in "Cool World," but returned as an animated character. He died in "Fight Club," but never actually existed. And he died in "Meet Joe Black," but came back as Death. The list is far from perfect, since it doesn't include Leonardo DiCaprio (The Departed, Titanic, Blood Diamond), Kevin Spacey (Se7en, American Beauty, La Confidential), Samuel L. Jackson (Deep Blue Sea, True Romance, Jurassic Park), or John Travolta (Pulp Fiction, Face/Off, The Punisher). Plus, there...

When Tony Blair first moved to London, he was struck by the city's rich mix of religions. Here, he explains why it inspired his short film competition for young people
Let me show you how my faith inspires me. This was the challenge that my Faith Foundation recently set young people from across the world in our first film competition, Faith Shorts.
Faith is an incredibly powerful force and as globalisation pushes us closer together, it is more important than ever. It is the lens through which many hundreds of millions of people view our complex and diverse world. Technology and modern media are bringing those from other faiths and cultures together faster than ever before. Too often, young people hear a distorted view of other faith traditions. To be religiously illiterate in this world is foolish and dangerous.

'Nip/Tuck' is a drama that started with a bang but ended with a whimper. It still had its fans but only the most die-hard. People I know who watched it the first few seasons say they got away from it when it started to get crazier and crazier. A Sony Pictures Classics film starring Billy Bob Thornton as an ex-convict on his way to redemption after serving a 19-year murder sentence will set the stage for the 2003 Sundance Film Festival as the opening-night film in Salt Lake City on Jan. 16. The Ed Solomon-directed Levity also features a name cast of Morgan Freeman, Holly Hunter and Kirsten Dunst. The Park City roster then kicks into gear the next night with the Premiere Category selection The Singing Detective, from Mel Gibson and Bruce Davey's Icon Prods. Gibson also stars in the Keith Gordon-helmed feature, which is about a writer (Robert Downey Jr.) who hallucinates musical numbers and paranoid plots. Robin Wright Penn, Adrien Brody and Katie Holmes round out the cast. Both star-heavy projects are indicative of the other selections in Sundance's Premiere Category, most of which star top-level Hollywood talent. Included in the set is the Larry Charles-helmed Masked and Anonymous, from Intermedia Film and Spitfire Pictures, which stars Bob Dylan as a musician who encounters a cast of characters played by Jessica Lange, Penelope Cruz, Val Kilmer, Jeff Bridges, Luke Wilson, Ed Harris, Angela Bassett and others on his way to a benefit concert after his release from jail. Al Pacino, Tea Leoni, Kim Basinger and Ryan O'Neal turn out in Miramax Films' People I Know from director Daniel Algrant. The drama, set for release next year after a postponement because of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, finds Pacino as a New York publicist who gets drawn into the world of politics and celebrity when his famous actor-client becomes involved in a scandal. The star contingent continues with Lions Gate Films' Confidence, directed by James Foley. Dustin Hoffman, Edward Burns and Andy Garcia topline the story of a con man's latest scam that puts him in debt with the Mafia. Paul Giamatti, Donal Logue, Rachel Weisz and Morris Chestnut round out the cast. Fox Searchlight Pictures has two films in the Premiere Category with Jim Sheridan's In America, starring Samantha Morton and Paddy Considine, and Alex Proyas' Garage Days featuring Kick Gurry, Maya Stange and Pia Miranda.

Gorgeous Kim Basinger is to play Al Pacino's lover in the true-life story of a top New York publicist. The pair will star in the drama People I Know. The film is loosely based on the activities of flamboyant Sixties wheeler-dealer Bobby Zarem. The film will also feature Tea Leoni, and will mark the comeback of Ryan O'Neal. It will be made later this year , and according to insiders is about "politics, drugs and scandals". Zarem is understood to have had a say in the content. A senior source says, "The fascinating thing will be how people will be able to spot themselves in the story. "This isn't so much about the image makers, it's more about those desperate to hold on to their images. Nobody escapes pain."...
