The poster for No Way Up says that it’s from the executive producers of the 47 Meters Down series. That’s not a good sign because it means it’s from the money men behind those films, not the writers, directors or any of the creative types. This time around, they’ve decided to offer their finny cash cows an all-you-can-eat buffet and, taking a cue from Airport 77, they’ve crashed an airliner into the Pacific. That leaves the survivors trapped on the ocean floor in a rapidly shrinking air pocket and surrounded by sharks.
As No Way Up starts things are already looking bad for Jed and Kyle. Kyle’s date for their trip to Cabo backed out at the last minute.

The action-thriller Megalodon: The Frenzy is a film directed by Brendan Petrizzo. The cast includes Caroline Williams, Eric Roberts, Jessica Chancellor, and others who have helped in the proper execution of the film. No study of film is complete without the inclusion of the shark. Cinema has long told stories of man’s eternal battle with monsters, real or otherwise. Yet over the decades, no animal has endured so thoroughly as that on-screen nemesis like the humble shark. There’s always time for a shark movie, including this summer with the release of Ben Wheatley’s Meg 2. Indeed, our very (mis)understanding of the creature is rooted in its movie history. Film has an incredible ability to reimagine the world around us, but its eternal insistence on turning the shark into a merciless killing machine for midnight movie scares has left a permanent, major scar. And it’s almost entirely thanks to one movie that not only changed Hollywood forever but left sharks with a serious case of bad PR.

Around this time every year, I tend to enjoy putting on Steven Spielberg’s Jaws. In this household it’s as annual a hallmark of summer as warm breezes, smoking meat on the barbecue, and blasts of chlorine water. However, it is too easy to fall into the trap of thinking Spielberg had the first and last word in the sounds of shrieking at the beach.
In truth, there are many great summertime chillers that make your blood run cold, and the sand turn to ice between your toes, no matter how hot the temperature is. Hence why we here at Den of Geek have put our heads together to figure what are the absolute best beachside horror movies (other than the obvious one) that will make you a “lake person” for the rest of your life. Enjoy!

Survival horror Fall (which is now on Netflix UK) sees two extreme sports enthusiasts climb up a 2000 foot tower in the middle of the desert and get stuck at the top. It’s high-concept in every sense as the two women teeter on a tiny ledge impossibly high up while the audience feel (pleasantly?) sick and anxious the whole time.
Fall is effective and efficient. The girls are likeable, capable and make good choices (other than climbing up a 2000 foot tower in the first place…). There’s real peril, enough back story to round the characters out, but ultimately it’s girls vs tower, with some pesky buzzards thrown in for good measure. This kind of survival horror – and by that in this instance we mean a film where characters are pitted against nature or a circumstance, rather than a person, or a supernatural entity – works viscerally when it’s done well.

Shark-attack horror movies are having a resurgence, and much of this is due to the surprising success of the 2017 movie 47 Meters Down. Two years after its release, a sequel was unveiled. Now that 47 Meters Down: Uncaged is on Netflix, more viewers are discovering the underwater adventure.
With a star-studded cast and incredible cinematography, 47 Meters Down: Uncaged is a horror fan favorite. Fans who want to retrace the steps of the film’s cast can even visit some of the locations featured in 47 Meters Down: Uncaged — although they shouldn’t expect to see terrifying sharks.

With its list of new releases for September 2022, Prime Video is finally unveiling the most anticipated (and expensive) series in the streamer’s history.
The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power will arrive to Prime Video’s servers on Sept. 2, 2022. This Lord of the Rings prequel, set in J.R.R. Tolkien’s Second Age, is in many ways the kind of TV property that Prime Video must have always wanted. It’s certainly the TV property most fitting with the company’s largesse and riches. The Rings of Power will cover the creation of the titular rings and many important events from Tolkien’s lore (condensed into a more TV-appropriate timeframe).
Middle-earth is going to be the happening spot on Amazon and the streaming world at large this month, but Prime Video does have a handful of other originals for the fantasy-phobic. Flight/Risk, a documentary about the Boeing 737 Max design disasters,...

“Fall” is a very good “don’t look down” movie. It’s a fun, occasionally cheesy, but mostly ingeniously made thriller about two daredevil climbers, Becky (Grace Caroline Currey) and Hunter (Virginia Gardner), who decide to scale the B67 TV tower — an abandoned 2,049-foot communication tower that juts up in the middle of the California desert, 23 miles from Sacramento. It’s an actual structure, like the Burj Khalifa in Dubai, the skyscraper that became the pedestal for Tom Cruise’s you-are-there stunt sequences in “Mission: Impossible — Ghost Protocol.” And if, like me, you loved that movie in part because of how deviously it toyed with your fear of heights, “Fall” is likely to hit you as an irresistible piece of vertigo porn. It’s for anyone who ate up “Ghost Protocol,” as well as the awesome rock-climbing documentaries “Free Solo” and “The Dawn Wall,” and wants to continue that shivery vicarious high.

The most beautiful thing about horror movies is that there's always something for everyone, no matter what keeps you up at night. Scared of clowns? Pennywise is here to give you nightmares. Creeped out by the supernatural? Good news, there's like, a million ghost movies. Just about every phobia that exists has been reflected in some way in a horror movie, but the apparent sadists at Lionsgate are taking acrophobia, or the phobia of heights, to an entirely new level with "Fall." The survival horror film follows a similar scenario as seen in films like "Open Water," Adam Green's "Frozen," or "47...

Opens with an oddly “fake” looking scene that feels like it was shot entirely on a green screen soundstage – which for all I know might be true, especially given the copious amounts of CGI featured in the film as a whole… Yes, we’re in CGI shark territory (combined with stock footage – how very The Asylum of this film) in this one folks!
The Requin, aka From Below, stars Alicia Silverstone [Sidebar; who would have thought we’d ever see Alicia Silverstone in a shark movie? Of course, being a shark movie we know things aren’t going to go according to plan for the couple. Kyle gets injured whilst swimming, his blood pouring into the ocean waters like some sort of obvious foreshadowing, whilst Jaelyn has flashbacks to her miscarriage.

Exclusive: Former Revolution Studios CEO Vince Totino and former Orion Pictures President John Hegeman are opening the doors to Wayward Entertainment, a multi-platform studio which will focus on producing and distributing low budget genre and alternative content.
Wayward Entertainment will kick things off partnering with Nick Frost and Simon Pegg’s Stolen Picture to produce the horror feature Svalta which they previously worked on together when Hegeman was at Orion.

It’s summer, everyone! And with its relatively sparse list of new releases for July 2021, Hulu seems to be subtlety imploring its subscribers to go outside.
Don’t get us wrong: Hulu’s library offerings get a big upgrade this month. July 1 sees the arrival of great films like Galaxy Quest, Fargo, and Caddyshack. Bill and Ted Face the Music premieres on July 2 and its followed by Barb and Star Go to Vista Del Mar on July 9. Not bad stuff! It’s just that, outside of the library titles, there isn’t much to go off of.
Hulu’s only major original release this month is the FX on Hulu production American Horror Stories on July 15. As its name implies, the show is a spinoff of American Horror Story and will feature self-contained horror episodes rather than a season-long arc. In horror films, cheap thrills are just as good as expensive ones. You don’t need a huge budget to scare your audience senseless. Take the new British chiller Host, described by Dread Central as “the scariest film of the past decade” – it all takes place on a laptop screen, and features a handful of actors and just a sprinkling of effects, but manages to be incredibly effective and unsettling. Here’s a selection of some of the best low budget horrors that have revolutionised the genre with their cost-cutting approach to fright, using resourcefulness, new technology and canny marketing to work around budgetary restrictions.

“Jaws,” the movie that did for sharks what “Psycho” did for showers, was rooted in the primal fear that drove its famous opening scene: the terror of having your body shredded by razory teeth and engulfed in a great white gullet. In its limb-shearing way, it caught the fear of getting sucked into a tiny (sharp) abyss. Yet part of the power of “Jaws” is that it was also an adventure drama of thrillingly wide-open space. The anxiety was dark and concentrated, the seascape enticing and vast.
But the movies made in the shadow of “Jaws” have tended to be waterlogged chamber thrillers. “Open Water,” released in 2003, was easily the most ingenious of them. It was like the opening scene of “Jaws” extended to 90 minutes — and amazingly, the director, Chris Kentis, sustained the tension. (I’m not sure why he didn’t sustain his career.) No other “Jaws” knockoff has been half as good.

It was like the opening scene of “Jaws” extended to 90 minutes — and amazingly, the director, Chris Kentis, sustained the tension. (I’m not sure why he didn’t sustain his career.) No other “Jaws” knockoff has been half as good.

In the new horror movie “Crawl,” a pack of enormous alligators invades a sleepy Florida town during a violent hurricane and proceeds to rip the cast apart, limb by limb. These nasty gators aren’t the first critters of their kind to terrify audiences, however. Here’s our list of ravenous reptiles, ranked in order from scariest to silliest.
1) Alligator (1980)
Two-time Oscar-nominated screenwriter John Sayles penned this gruesomely entertaining monster mash about a baby gator named Ramón who gets flushed down a toilet and mutates into a 36-foot behemoth lurking in the Chicago sewer system. When his appetite for human flesh gets the better of him, Ramón bursts through the sidewalk and chows down on a horde of terrified locals. Featuring colorful performances from cult film superstars Robert Forster and Henry Silva, plus witty direction from the ever-dependable Lewis Teague, “Alligator” is more than just the best rampaging reptile movie...

It’s no secret that “Jaws” changed filmmaking forever, essentially kickstarting the summer blockbuster movie season and the career of Steven Spielberg. However, it also proved how effective sharks are like movie monsters, and how much money films featuring them can make. The “Jaws” sequels, “Deep Blue Sea,” “Open Water,” this summer’s “The Meg,” a surprise hit by early measures, and last year’s “The Shallows” and “47 Meters Down” have all capitalized on the hold sharks have on the public consciousness.

Ever since Steven Spielberg set foot on the beach, directors have been attempting to recapture a similar level of thrills and artistry in the shark movie, usually towing either the intimately terrifying line or opting for over-the-top, scenery-chewing bombast. Far from the pared-down horror of something like Open Water, the latest selachian feature The Meg goes for broke with the notion that bigger is better, making the strong case of disproving that exact statement. Taking far too long to get to people-chomping thrills, Jon Turtletaub eventually settles into a handful of entertaining set pieces, but is often sidetracked by a script that plays it safe in both structure and bloodletting.

On June 20, 1975 a thriller from a relatively unknown filmmaker was unleashed on unsuspecting theatre goers. Audiences witnessed, mostly from surface water level, the birth of the original Summer Blockbuster, Steven Spielberg’s Jaws. People had never seen this type of visceral carnage before in cinemas and subsequently it had a terrifying impact of beach goers that summer. There is something so primal and horrific about the now iconic scene of the dolly zoom on Martin Brody’s shocked face after Alex Kintner is attacked.
Based on the hit bestseller from author Peter Benchley, the suspense novel is the story of three men searching for a great white shark preying upon a beach resort. After first publication in February 1974, the novel was a great success, with the hardback...

When “The Meg” debuts on Aug. 10, it will continue a long legacy of shark movies.
The science-fiction film, starring Jason Statham and directed by Jon Turteltaub, follows a group of scientists as they attempt to stop the biggest shark in the world — the Megalodon — from terrorizing a beach. “‘The Meg’ is like ‘Sharknado’ if it had a $150 million budget and a heart,” writer Erich Hoeber recently joked to Variety.
Steven Spielberg is credited with originating the shark movie (and the summer blockbuster at large) with his 1975 classic “Jaws.” The film followed a man-eating shark that hunted beachgoers and thrilled audiences, generating a massive $470 million worldwide.
It would go on to inspire a number of other movies focusing on the sharp-toothed fish, including 1999’s “Deep Blue Sea,” which found moderate critical and commercial success. The horror movie “Open Water” came just a few years after, centering on a couple that gets...

Welcome to the “Preview Reel” column, where we look at the week’s upcoming wide-release movies. Solo: A Star Wars Story dramatically under performed over the Memorial Day holiday weekend, bringing in just $103 million over four days. That’s well below the anticipated $140-150 million, and could be seen as the first misstep from Disney since acquiring Lucasfilm back in 2012. The good news is that the film will have the next two weeks all to itself when it comes to blockbusters, as this week is a little light on the new film front. There’s the new Jackass movie, Action Point, and the survival true-story Adrift, both looking to target disparate summer audiences. We have a bad feeling about their box-office prospects, but could either be a mid-summer surprise?
Action Point (2018)
What we are excited about: If you’re a fan of the Jackass television show, then you should be excited for this movie.

[Editor’s note: The following contains spoilers for “The Detour” Season 3 finale — Episode 10, “The Whiskey Double, Leave the Bottle.”]
Hopefully, the last episode of Season 3 of “The Detour,” one of the most underrated shows on TBS and in all of TV, means that every farewell episode per year involves an explosion of some kind. (Last season, the big finale setpiece was an exploding cow that caught both the Parkers and pretty much anyone in the audience off-guard.)
This time around, the surprise was a little more telegraphed, as much as the sudden appearance of an RPG can be. The militia group that had been working with Edie’s (Laura Benanti) renegade Uspis task force of one to track down the Parkers and indict them in a greater fraud scheme descended on this Pioneertown-style oasis, tucked away in the greater reaches of the Alaskan wilderness.
If this all seems overwhelming, that’s kind of by design. Over the course of three seasons,...

Director Steven Spielberg’s penultimate shark film Jaws spawned Deep Blue Sea, The Shallows and Open Water, just to name a few. Mankind has been chum in the cinema water for these sharp toothed beasties for decades.

“Are you gonna bark all day, little doggy, or are you gonna bite?”
25 years later, this is the line from “Reservoir Dogs” that most stays in the mind — no small feat, given how quotable Quentin Tarantino’s masterpiece of mafioso banter is. Maybe it’s because it signals the violence to come from Mr. Blonde (Michael Madsen), whose stuck-in-the-middle-with-you torture sequence has lost none of its disturbing luster — or perhaps it’s because, nearly three decades later, it almost reads as a statement of intent from Tarantino himself.

If you've ever wanted to experience the thrill of swimming with the sharks without the risk of dismemberment, then you might want to take the plunge with Open Water 3: Cage Dive, which is in theaters and available On-Demand and on Digital HD beginning August 11th from Lionsgate. For our latest Q&A feature, we recently caught up with director Gerald Rascionato and star Joel Hogan to discuss the making of their new water-centric movie.
Gerald, the found footage approach to this story makes the viewer feel like they’re swimming with the sharks. How did you go about filming the first-person Pov shots?
Gerald Rascionato: I wanted the film to look authentic, but I made sure to get a Sony hand-cam that had a very good self-stabilizing lens. Even though the film is shot Pov, I didn’t want the footage to look too shaky like in some other found footage movies.

More than 40 years after “Jaws” turned the fear of shark-infested waters into a classic horror trope, the concept keeps giving rise to new iterations, most recently with Liongate’s release of “Open Water 3: Cage Dive.” The low-budget project opens in limited theatrical release and VOD August 11, and it’s a curious outcome for what was a sensation at the 2003 Sundance Film Festival and became a $54 million worldwide hit.
At this point, the franchise carries no earmarks of its indie roots — OW3 is a gimmicky story about Australian tourists whose cage-diving excursion with Great Whites goes horribly wrong — but the team behind the original installment never expected the concept to last this long. They didn’t even consider it a horror film.

The ocean is a very scary place to be abandoned and especially in shark infested waters.
Open Water 3 Cage Dive is the next installment in the franchise that brings the fear of ocean survival into theaters. The film stars Joel Hogan, Josh Potthoff, Megan Peta Hill and Pete Valley. It’s written and directed by Gerald Rascionato.
Here’s the synopsis:
In this intense thriller, three friends from California head to the rugged Australian coast for a cage-dive encounter with deadly Great Whites. But after attracting a swarm of vicious sharks their tour boat is destroyed by a massive rogue wave. As clouds gather and darkness descends, the three friends find themselves alone and defenseless, afloat in the chilly ocean as hungry man-eaters begin to circle. With little hope of rescue, they must fight to survive using only their courage.

Surprise, surprise, folks. It sounds like Wonder Woman 2 is getting quite the fast tracking from Warner Bros. This summer, Wonder Woman has slowly but surely become the biggest hit of the season. As of this writing, it’s far surpassed any other DC film to date in terms of the domestic box office, and is at a respectable $780 million worldwide. We wouldn’t be surprised if it went on to hit $800 million — quite the feat for a first film in a franchise. Plus, it’s also managed to turn around the narrative for the DC Extended Universe, making fans pretty excited for what’s to come.
But when would a sequel hit? That was the big question. In fact, the entire DC Films lineup has been a big question. Yes, the films have mostly been on track up to this point, but the world beyond Justice League is incredibly uncertain.

The killer shark movie has seen a resurgence in recent years with the Sharknado franchise spewing straight to streaming site sequels, while the schlockier Sharkenstein, Dino-Shark, Jurassic Shark and Shark Exorcist have also plagued home viewing platforms. Some manage to make it to the big screen; take last year’s The Shallows, which earned reputable reviews and Us box office (for its budget), while 2018 will see Jason Statham hopefully chinning a Carcharodon Carcharias in Jon Turtletuab’s giant mutant shark flick, Meg.

Whether you're afraid of the water or not, finding yourself trapped beneath a pool cover might fall into your "worst nightmare" category, and that's exactly what two sisters face in 12 Feet Deep, the new thriller from Matt Eskandari. With the swimming pool-set film out now from MarVista Entertainment, we caught up with director and co-writer Matt Eskandari for our latest Q&A feature to discuss working with Tobin Bell (Jigsaw from the Saw movies), the challenges of filming underwater, and much more.
Thanks for taking the time to answer some questions for us, Matt. How and when did you and Michael Hultquist first come up with the idea for 12 Feet Deep?
Matt Eskandari: I'm still ashamed to admit it, but even as a grown man, I still cannot swim. I have extreme anxiety around large public pools. The smell of chlorine and the loud reverberated sounds inside get me on edge.
