“The transition will be seamless.”
Those words usually accompany an announcement of a corporate takeover and, of course, it never works out that way. And it likely won’t for Paramount 2024.
Consider history: When MGM found it had become a corporate conquest in the mid-1960s, not only was the studio staff fired but three major movies were canceled mid-production. The executive guillotine was also in action at Warner Bros a year later, when the production team was decimated by its new proprietor and even Looney Tunes was dropped.
Paramount’s “transition” in 1966 was even more lethal: Not only did the new studio owner cancel existing shoots but he also greenlit three of the biggest flops in Hollywood history – earning renown as “Bluhdorn’s Bombs” (see below).
History may not automatically repeat itself in the deal now unfolding behind the filigreed Paramount gates, but the “seamless transition” already sounds problematic:...

When Barbra Streisand delivered her 992-page memoir to her editor at Viking earlier this year, did anyone urge her to cut? Even gently?
Not that it would have done any good, for Streisand has a lot to say and her opus was termed “exhausting, ecstatic and undeniably moving” by the New Yorker this week.
Streisand hasn’t changed. On her first day of shooting On a Clear Day You Can See Forever (1970), when her director Vincente Minnelli shouted “cut,” she shook her head, saying she intended to keep going.
Minnelli had made great movies like An American In Paris and Gigi and had even survived working with (and being married to) Judy Garland. “One doesn’t say ‘no’ to Minnelli,” Streisand was warned by legendary writer Alan Jay Lerner (My Fair Lady).
Neither had as yet learned their Barbra lesson. Nor had her agent, Sue Mengers, who later tried to...

Exclusive: Fiona Shaw (Andor), Katherine Waterston (Inherent Vice) and Chaske Spencer (The English) have entered production in NYC on Park Avenue, a new indie drama from Sundance alum Gaby Dellal (On a Clear Day), who directs from her script written with Tina Alexis Allen.
A production of Rimsky Productions and Washington Square Films, Park Avenue follows a mother and daughter who, over a fraught six weeks, reveal secrets, unravel lies and ultimately lay bare the ties that bind. Paralyzed by her life wrangling cattle in Alberta, Canada, Charlotte (Waterston) jumps into her Ford Bronco, flees her over-controlling husband, and lands back in her childhood Park Avenue apartment where she takes refuge with her mother Kit (Shaw). Rediscovering the boy she loved, now her grown doorman Anders (Spencer), and the life she left at 18, the mother and daughter explore shared history, unshared truths and find a way to face both love and loss.

Nearly a year after its world premiere at the Toronto Film Festival, Anything is Possible – The Serge Ibaka Story will have its U.S. debut on Crackle on August 1.
The feature-length documentary about the Congolese NBA star was produced by Vinay Virmani at LeBron James’ Uninterrupted Canada along with Jordi Vilà and Ibaka’s Ouenzé Entertainment.
Ibaka, a power forward, played a key role on the Toronto Raptors’ championship team in 2019. In the Raptors’ upset NBA Finals victory over the Golden State Warriors, Kawhi Leonard won Mvp honors but Ibaka proved essential, especially in a 20-point performance on the road in Game 4.
In the film (check out a teaser above), Ibaka is shown returning to his birthplace, the Republic of Congo. Carrying the Larry O’Brien trophy won by the Raptors, he meets with local residents and tours the streets where he grew up. He reflects on the death of his...

Ashton Kutcher’s unscripted series Going From Broke has been handed a second season by Crackle Plus as the AVOD service unveils its latest slate of originals.
The digital platform is leaning heavily on scripted and non-scripted series from its sister company, Landmark Studio, which was set up by owner Chicken Soup for the Soul Entertainment and former Idw Entertainment President David Ozer last year.
The slate was announced as part of its NewFronts advertising presentation.
Going From Broke, which the company said has scored 16M views, will return for a second ten-part run in the first quarter of 2021. From executive producer Kutcher, the series sheds light on the national crisis of student debt and offers practical solutions for young people to go from broke. Produced by Chicken Soup for the Soul Entertainment, it is hosted by Chegg CEO Dan Rosensweig.
On the scripted side, Crackle Plus has unveiled four originals.

U.K.-based Red Arrow Studios International has finalized a pay-tv rights deal with HBO Nordic for Invercine & Wood and Story House Productions’ Canneseries selection “Dignity,” a political thriller originally broadcast by commissioning partners Mega in Chile and German digital platform Joyn, a streaming service run jointly by Discovery and German media giant ProSiebenSat.
The HBO deal sees the broadcaster take pay-tv and SVOD rights for much of Central and Eastern Europe, Iberia and the Nordics where the series will launch in markets including Spain, Portugal, Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Finland, Czech Republic, Poland and Hungary.
Based on true events, half of “Dignity” unspools at the Chilean camp of post-wwii German cult Colonia Dignidad, headed by the harrowing Paul Schaefer, a former Nazi soldier who fled to rural Chile after the war. Decades later, under a new federal government, fictional Spanish-German bi-lingual prosecutor Leo Ramírez is sent to the colony, tasked...

Lerner who?
Getting serious for a moment, this is the fact around which we will orbit: What really constitutes American culture? Literature and architecture and painting -- yes, certainly. But what particularly animates our hearts is song -- and, in particular, the living energy of the American musical theater. In that buoyant realm, there’s no greater literate master than lyricist and writer Alan Jay Lerner (1918-1986). The open-and-shut-case evidence for this assertion is his CV: On A Clear Day, Brigadoon, Gigi, Paint Your Wagon, An American In Paris (story and screen play), Camelot, and -- most famously, My Fair Lady.
Watching our black and white TV, as a child I noticed my parents (and the studio audience) were delighted by a singer I’d never heard of. I could not understand the big to-do about him.

Leo Tolstoy nailed the universal truth about family on its head in the opening sentence of Anna Karenina — “Happy families are all alike; every unhappy family is unhappy in its own way.” Family, in whatever shape or size, is always complicated, messy and crazy — but we wouldn’t trade our own for any other in the world (most of the time).

Billy Wilder’s Buddy Buddy (1981) might be one of the most obvious go-to examples in the annals of conventional wisdom when it comes to the cinephile’s parlor game of pointing out a great director’s greatest foible. Upon release the movie was summarily dismissed by critics and ignored by audiences—it managed a paltry $7 million domestically, three million less than its production budget.
Roger Ebert, in his review, called Buddy Buddy “a comedy without laughs,” one apparently so vile that it could inspire not only audience indifference but also one of the revered reviewer’s laziest pieces of criticism. Ebert’s short piece quickly degenerates into name-calling-- “This movie is appalling” is the first sentence of the review, and the movie’s name goes unmentioned until the second paragraph—sans much in the way of actual insight. And unfortunately the critic’s disdain ends up functioning as a substitute...

Originally called “Three Generations,” The Weinstein Company’s family drama is now titled “About Ray” and is landing in theaters next month. Starring three generation of women, Elle Fanning, Naomi Watts and Susan Sarandon, the family drama is directed by Gaby Dellal (“On A Clear Day”). “About Ray” centers on a teenager, the titular lead character (Fanning), who no longer identifies with her female gender and wants to transition into becoming a man and the issues this causes the rest of the matriarchs in the family. With “Transparent,” “Orange Is The New Black,” “Tangerine” and the upcoming “The Danish Girl” drama enjoying critical acclaim and making headlines, all these narratives are creating a safe and empathic environment to discuss issues of transgenderism. “About Ray” couldn’t have come at a better time. The topic is in the air, arguably capturing the zeitgeist in a major way thanks to strides made...

Walter Dean Myers, a renown young adult and children’s author, died on Tuesday, July 1, at the age of 76.
Walter Dean Myers Biography
Myers, who authored more than 100 books in 45 years, earned a reputation for being unafraid to portray the bittersweet realities of children growing up in cities. For example, one of his most famous books, Monster (2001), is about a 16-year-old who has been convicted of murder.
His narrators and protagonists are mostly African-American teenagers struggling to find their place in the world, and he often advocated for more diverse characters featured in print. In March, Myers exposed the huge discrepancy between the number of children’s books featuring white characters and those featuring minorities.
Myers began his career in 1969, when he won a contest for picture book writers. The contest, sponsored by the Council on Interracial Books for Children, lead to the publication of Myers’ first book: Where Does the Day Go?...

"The Lord of the Rings" was one of the most popular series in film history, earning over $2.9 billion worldwide and raking in an amazing 17 Oscars.
And, to nobody's surprise, the stars of "The Lord of the Rings" have since gone on to become major film and television stars: Viggo Mortensen has had acclaimed turns in movies like "A History of Violence," Orlando Bloom topped the box office again with the "Pirates of the Caribbean" trilogy, Dominic Monaghan anchored the cult classic TV show "Lost." The list goes on and on.
But one name is conspicuously absent from that list: Billy Boyd.
Boyd, of course, played the lovably naive hobbit Pippin. And even before "The Lord of the Rings" was out of theaters, he seemed on the verge of major stardom, appearing in the 2004 Best Picture nominee "Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World" (which lost to "The Return of the King...

“Hazard Pay” was a prime reminder of the phenomenal writing and acting which has made Breaking Bad the best drama on TV today.
Mark Margolis (as Hector Salamanca) and Giancarlo Esposito (as Gus Fring) may no longer be on the show to add the tense juxtaposition to Walt’s (Bryan Cranston) Icarus climb, but their legacy still haunts him.
Perhaps in contemporary fiction, martial arts and video games, beating the boss means becoming the boss. It’s the logic Darth Vader used when he cut down Obi Wan. “The circle is now complete,” Vader proclaimed. “When I left you, I was but the learner; now – I – am the master.”
That thinking may work if you’re Darth Vader, Jedi master. However, as Mike (Jonathan Banks) reminded Walt, killing Jesse James doesn’t make him (Walt) Jesse James.

In April Fool's Day, a bunch of college friends get together for weekend of upper-crust east-coast fun on a Massachusetts island compound that Muffy St. John (Deborah Foreman) is set to inherit. How upper crust and swank is it? On a clear day you can see the Kennedy compound. Of course they take the last ferry out on Friday, ensuring that theyll be trapped throughout the weekend. And since this ostensibly a slasher film, most of them are ostensibly killed throughout the weekend. But its actually one of the strangest mainstream slashers Ive seen. Not that any one particular moment in the film is especially shocking or bold, but rather that the movie is so consistently left of center I wonder if something like it could even be made today. Since today is March 31st...

Who: Wallpaper's Ricky Reed: the North Oakland party boy redefining pop music one dirty club song at a time. Reed describes himself as a "sleazy, excess-obsessed, disco-ball busting crowd destroyer." He's kind of like Justin Timberlake on sizzurp.
Years in the Bay Area: Life.
Current Gig: Born Eric Frederic (but according to his publicist #RickyReedIsReal), Ricky Reed became a local sensation for his catchy songs and irreverent lyrics that poke fun at pop culture. (Choruses include "text me your love so I know it's true" and "I'm not just anybody; I slept with a celebrity.")
But with the release of party jams "Fucking Best Song Everrr" and "STUPiDFACEDD," Reed skyrocketed into the mainstream, signing with Epic Records, the same label released Michael Jackson's "Thriller." While his new songs have certainly been polished, his funky surrealism and sense of humor remains.

New York – The current Broadway season claims its highest-profile casualty to date with the premature closing of On a Clear Day You Can See Forever, a major revival of the 1965 musical that stars Harry Connick Jr. While Connick proved a major box office draw in the 2006 revival of The Pajama Game, his marquee clout was insufficient to overcome largely negative reviews for On a Clear Day. Since opening Dec. 11 at the St. James Theatre, the show has struggled to build audiences, even through the lucrative holiday weeks. The production will play its final performance Jan.

Georges Méliès' A Trip to the Moon Melancholia, A Separation Screenplay, Runner-Up Jeannie Berlin: National Society of Film Critics' Surprises Two interesting omissions from the Nsfc roster: critics' fave Michelle Williams (for portraying Marilyn Monroe in Simon Curtis' My Week with Marilyn) and George Clooney (for his stressed out father in Alexander Payne's The Descendants) weren't among the critics' top three actresses/actors. Dunst and Yun were followed by New York Film Critics winner Meryl Streep for her Margaret Thatcher in Phyllida Lloyd's The Iron Lady; Brad Pitt was followed by Gary Oldman in Tomas Alfredson's Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy and Jean Dujardin in Michel Hazanavicius' The Artist. Chicago – Six years after her sentimental debut feature, “On a Clear Day,” filmmaker Gaby Dellal has gotten mired in the wintry sludge of her sophomore effort, “Angels Crest.” This is the sort of film that doesn’t stand a chance of being embraced by many viewers, particularly during an awards season crowded with gems. There’s little to recommend here beyond the icily beautiful cinematography and a few strong performances.
Rating: 2.5/5.0
What starts out as an intriguing mystery reminiscent of “Twin Peaks” quickly unravels into a familiar trudge through bleak lives and bad parenting. It’s set in the isolation of a working-class mountain town haunted by drunken souls who mope about while making bone-headed decisions. The ending fails to leave an impact because it’s no less dreary and inevitable than anything that precedes it. This isn’t a story about transformation and discovery, but rather the acceptance of one’s own demise.

There's nothing more tragic and horrifying than the loss of a child, which may be why filmmaker Gaby Dellal ( On a Clear Day ) decided to explore it in her new drama Angels Crest . Based on the book of the same name by Leslie Schwartz, it stars Thomas Dekker ( A Nightmare on Elm Street ) as Ethan, the young father of 3-year-old son Nate, who vanishes when alone in the car in the wilderness outside their small Rocky Mountain town. Lynn Collins ( X-Men Origins: Wolverine ) is the boy's absent mother Cindy, an alcoholic always in trouble whose grief is overwhelming when she learns the son she had to give up custody of is now dead. Over the course of the film, we see how the two of them react and place blame for Nate's death and how the rest of the community starts to take sides on...

The 2011 Black List, the Top Unproduced Screenplays of the year has been released. The best unproduced screenplays from The Black List 2011 is compiled by votes from over 300 “execs, agency guys, and high-level assistants. Titled The Black List, the compendium highlights both established screenwriters and up-and-comers, and has served as a launching pad in the past for projects like Juno, Lars and the Real Girl, and (500) Days of Summer. Last year’s list included Margin Call, Crazy, Stupid, Love, The Hunger Games, and Snow White and the Huntsman.”
Regarding the validity of The Black List, things to keep in mind:
some of these screenplays have already been acquired and are already in development, though…none will have entered principal photography by December 31, 2011. Also worth pointing out is that, as in previous years, there have been rumors that some of the participants have been accused of using the Black List to promote their own clients or friends.

For the seventh annual year a list of the top unproduced screenplays written in the past 12 calendar months has been made. The Black List is the most recognized and celebritized compilation for screenwriters and unknown movie ideas to be heard. While some prior Black List scripts have gone on to be made (like Juno or 500 Days of Summer), most scripts do not. However, what being on The Black List can do is to give a big push of credibility to a screenwriter hoping to carve out a career in Hollywood.
The Black List recepients are chosen by a committee of 300 individuals working in Hollywood: agents, writers, producers, managers and the like. They read the screenplays that float around the showbiz ecosystem; some are bought and are already in development while others are still seeing the interest of talent of financial backers.

The 2011 Black List has arrived online and there are a bunch of the hottest scripts in Hollywood. Some have already been picked up by studios, while most are still unproduced. Here is the press release: The Black List was compiled from the suggestions of over 300 film executives, each of whom contributed the names of up to ten of their favorite scripts that were written in, or are somehow uniquely associated with, 2011 and will not have begun principal photography during this calendar year.
This year, scripts had to receive at least six mentions to be included on the The Black List.
All reasonable effort has been made to confirm the information contained herein. The Black List apologizes for all misspellings, misattributions, incorrect representation identification, and questionable 2011 affiliations.
It has been said many times, but it's worth repeating:
The Black List is not a "best of" list. It is, at best, a "most liked" list.

[1] Each December since 2004, studio executive Franklin Leonard has compiled the best unproduced screenplays of the year, as voted by hundreds of execs, agency guys, and high-level assistants. Titled The Black List, the compendium highlights both established screenwriters and up-and-comers, and has served as a launching pad in the past for projects like Juno, Lars and the Real Girl, and (500) Days of Summer. Last year's list included Margin Call, Crazy, Stupid, Love, The Hunger Games, and Snow White and the Huntsman. It should be noted that the headline is somewhat misleading -- some of these screenplays have already been acquired and are already in development, though according to Leonard none will have entered principal photography by December 31, 2011. Also worth pointing out is that, as in previous years, there have been rumors that some of the participants have been accused of using the Black List to promote their own clients or friends.

This year at the Austin Film Festival, studio executive and “Black List” founder Franklin Leonard introduced the opening film, Butter. It’s a fantastic satirical comedy written by Jason Micallef and Leonard’s post-screening Q&A with him was equally hilarious and unconventional.
Sitting in the upper deck at the Paramount Theatre, I was in awe at how Leonard had not only created the list just six years prior but how it provided such legitimacy to emerging screenwriters, like Micallef. He was relatively unknown in ‘08, but his script placed third on the list. Now he has a movie coming out starring Jennifer Garner, his new scripts have Jack Black and Jason Segel attached (separately), and he wrote a movie titled Good Vibrations about, um, marital aids starring Charlize Theron. That’s the power of the Black List.
Simply put, “The Black List” is a collection of the best unproduced screenplays...

The actress attended the La premiere of ‘Our Idiot Brother’ on August 16 wearing the barely-there polish. Do You wear clear nail polish?
Rashida Jones had a lot going on with her hot pink and red outfit and intensely bright lips, so I applaud her for keeping her nails neat and clean, but do you think she should have gone with a pale color instead of clear or maybe worn no polish at all?
I’ve never really gotten on board with clear polish. I think if I don’t want to wear a color on my nails, I’ll just make sure that they are clean, well-shaped and buffed nicely and then wear them bare. Pale pinks and beiges come in handy when I want just the lightest touch of color.
If you have weak nail, however, sporting a strengthening clear top coat never hurts. Try Deborah Lippmann’s Nail...

Tragedy strikes a small-town community.

Understandably, some of the humor on The Simpsons is being viewed as a little too radioactive right now. Sensitive to the nuclear power plant problems that Japan is currently facing, television stations in Germany, Austria and Switzerland are in the process of reviewing episodes of the long-running animated series—seeing how Homer Simpson works at a power plant in Springfield and all—to weed out any that feature references to nuclear disaster. In Austria, for instance, a network has already reportedly pulled two episodes so far—one titled "Marge Gets a Job," that features scientists Marie and Pierre Curie dying of radiation poisoning, and another titled "On a Clear Day I Can't See My...
