A celebration of Kobe Bryant‘s athletic career turned into a family affair — after all, it’s not every day that two of your jersey numbers get retired.
The legendary basketball star was flanked by his wife, Vanessa, and their three daughters as the Los Angeles Lakers placed 8 and 24 — both numbers worn by Bryant during his 20-year career — among the previous honorees on the Staples Center wall at Monday night’s ceremony.
Bryant, 39, arrived at the stadium pushing a baby carriage holding 1-year-old Bianka Bella, and shared a special message to his family in his acceptance speech.

Liev Schreiber is scoring some serious dad points.
The actor enjoyed an NBA game on Sunday with his sons Samuel Kai, 9 this month, and Alexander “Sasha” Pete, 10, watching the New York Knicks square off against the Orlando Magic at Madison Square Garden in New York City.
Even though the home team didn’t take home the victory (the final score was 105 to 100 in the Magic’s favor), the father-son trio seemed to be having the time of their life, all smiles while sitting courtside.

Luc Besson was born to make “Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets.” Based on the influential French comics series “Valérian and Laureline” (written by Pierre Christin and illustrated by Jean-Claude Mézières), it’s sci-fi on steroids with a multitude of exotic aliens and baroque environments. Very French and very weird.
But before Besson could tackle his ambitious passion project about a pair of “spatio-temporal agents” (Dane DeHaan and Cara Delevingne) protecting the intergalactic city of Alpha, he first had to make “The Fifth Element.” That was 20 years ago, at the dawn of CG, and his experimental tune-up for “Valerian” became a cult classic.
Bruce Willis played a flying taxi driver in futuristic New York who goes on a wild adventure with the orange-haired, humanoid savior of the universe (Milla Jovovich). Besson even hired Mézières as an uncredited designer because it was easier than just ripping off his comic series.

(“Guardians 2” spoilers follow.)
So here’s a poser: In “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2,” we have Peter Quill (Chris Pratt) and his father, Ego (Kurt Russell), a living planet that takes on human form. Weta Digital was challenged with creating the interior look of Ego, along with the various transformations during his climactic fight with Quill.
This involved complicated mathematical patterns known as fractals (inspired by artist Hal Tenny, who served as a consultant). However, not only did Weta have difficulty controlling the fractals, but it also had to make them pliable in short order.
And then there was the biggest challenge: Weta was charged with ensuring that “Guardians” avoided an R-rating. That’s because 40% of Ego gets destroyed in the fight, and his internal organs can be seen dangling behind him. Weta offered to make him look more fractal, oozing black blood, but director James Gunn would have none of that.

We're celebrating 50 brilliant UK independent bookshops. If your favourite is missing, please add it to the list below...
In Neil Gaiman’s preface to Shelf Life: Fantastic Stories Celebrating Bookstores, he describes four bookshops from his childhood. One was a travelling school shop, one a local store staffed by a helpful hippy where he’d pick up 25p Tom Disch novels, another was a bus ride away and owned by a Grinch who’d glower at schoolchildren customers, and the last was a now-defunct Soho sci-fi and fantasy treasure trove. Four individual shops run by booksellers with distinct personalities and idiosyncratic tastes. All of which made Gaiman what he is.
That’s the joy of independent bookshops. Their personalities shape those of the people who visit them. They’re not homogenous. Their stock tends to reflect their passions rather than the year's best-performing unit-shifters. And their...

The Art Directors Guild has announced nominees for the group's 19th annual awards, and films that have come on strong as of late like "American Sniper" and "Nightcrawler" were in the mix along notable extravagant displays in the period and fantasy categories. However, there were a few missing pieces. In the fantasy arena, both "The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies" and "Maleficent" came up short, while "Exodus: Gods and Kings" missed in the period department. The most shocking snub might be "Mr. Turner's" in that field, however. (And it would have been great to see "Snowpiercer" get some love here, but, alas.) As a reminder, the Guild implemented a new rule this season. Period films must now have the majority of sets and locations designed to portray a time period at least 20 years prior to the present awards year. Contemporary films, therefore, must have the majority of...

The holidays aren’t here until Mariah Carey says so. But when you hear "All I Want For Christmas Is You" -- that’s it. It’s time.
That’s just the way it’s been since 1994, when the jolly diva dropped that musical gift under our tree. Now a ubiquitous modern-day classic, its tambourine-shaking, bell-ringing, high note-hitting joyfulness could turn even Grumpy Cat’s frown upside down.
Video: Who Covered Carey's 'Christmas' Best?
Here are nine tributes to the original song that prove – even now, 20 years later – all we want for Christmas is Mariah:
1. Magic Mariah
Not even elves or jiving gingerbread men can upstage a diva (watch as she even throws them some shade). When Carey belted the tune in 2004 at the Walt Disney World Christmas Day Parade, the magic wasn’t happening inside the kingdom – it was happening on that stage.
2. Holly, Jolly and Retro

Should you be watching Matt Berry comedy show Toast Of London on Channel 4? In the words of Stephen Toast... Yes!
Did you know that musical star Michael Ball has double the amount of blood in his body as that of the average human? It's what allows him to belt out those big notes.
If you watched Series 1 of Toast Of London then you'll already know that's true.
But if you didn't know and didn't watch, then that's entirely not your fault. After a strong pilot, Channel 4 took the first series of Matt Berry and Arthur Matthews' comedy about failing actor Steven Toast (Berry) and buried it in the late hour soil of Sunday nights, in a time slot so obscure you'd need a TV guide, compass, shovel, and remote to find it.
Fortunately the Rose D'Or committee still managed to unearth it on 4Od - no doubt...

Let’s face it, reality competition shows are getting a little old. You’ve seen all the cooking, sewing, and voting off you can stand. Syfy is trying to change that attitude with shows like Face Off, Jim Henson’s Creature Shop Challenge, and now, Wizard Wars.
How about if we put magicians to the reality challenge test? But, what could that mean? How do you put magicians through the paces of a reality competition show? Well, according to Wizard Wars, you give them a random assortment of everyday items, and make them impress Penn & Teller.
Yeah. That sounds about right.
Be sure to set your DVR so you don’t miss this one. It’s hitting August 19th, and it looks like it’s going to be a lot of fun.

Magic isn’t real. We all know that, deep down.
This notion is ferociously challenged the moment you’re in a room with Derren Brown. His magic does not appear in the form of a tux and a top hat, nor will he stupefy you with the unexpected presence of white rabbits. The true splendour of this “mentalist” is his ability to unlock your brain from its pre-conceived banalities and delightfully throw you into a compelling world of the unknown.
The unknown, being your own mind.
“We are all trapped inside our own heads.” Derren announces at the beginning of his new show, Infamous. Sworn to secrecy, we cannot disclose exactly what we witnessed during his performance in Blackpool this month. This was the raw, stripped down Derren Brown - a pure privilege to experience. Throughout the show, he continues to reminds us that everything he is...

When Troy came into the Digital Spy office and displayed my debit card Pin code to the office via the medium of playing cards, we knew he wasn't messing around. Once I'd just about recovered, I chatted to Troy about his brand new E4 series, so read on to find out why he's not the new Dynamo, which magician is his idol, what kind of tricks you can expect in his show, and why he's not interested in tricking celebrities right now...
Troy on... not explaining his tricks
"Don't explain what you do, especially with something like magic. The whole fun of it is the mystery - how did he do it? If I just said, 'It's this, this and this', that's not fun. Magic's not like that anyway. You can't just say, 'Bish, bash, bosh, that's how it's done'. There's a lot more to it than that. There's no explaining,...

Objective's chief on why the magician's Channel 4 special this week had to be different and the return of Peep Show
Andrew Newman, an executive producer on illusionist Derren Brown's latest Channel 4 show, in which he coaches pensioners to steal a Chapman brothers painting from an art exhibition, is no stranger to brazen stunts. Early in his TV career, Newman worked with Sacha Baron Cohen in his Ali G phase and Chris Morris on Brass Eye, so he should have a natural affinity with Brown's high concept pranks.
As chief executive of Objective, the independent producer behind Brown's TV output, Newman oversees a programming slate that mirrors his own background working on offbeat, sometimes spiky series. The likes of Peep Show, Fresh Meat and Toast of London – recommissioned for a second Channel 4 series last week – attract critical plaudits and industry awards, but not always large audiences.

When I was in Elementary school I came across this book, Harry Houdini: Master of Magic. It was a great and easy read that made me a pretty big fan of magic and all things Houdini. Now the History Channel will continue its track record of strong performing hits (Hatfields & McCoys, The Bible) with a four-hour miniseries about the famous magician Deadline reports.
Oscar winner Adrien Brody will play the title character, joined by Kristen Connolly (House Of Cards) as Houdini’s wife Bess. The series will trace the arc of Houdini’s life from desperate poverty to worldwide fame. Filming is slated to begin this fall.
Coming soon to History is the four-hour miniseries Bonnie & Clyde.

This is a collection of amazingly sinister looking art used by magicians back in the day to promote their shows. These pieces come from an art book called Magic: 1400s-1950s, and I have to have it. What you see here is just a small sampling of incredibly cool vintage art. I love this kind of stuff!
Here's the description of the book:
The world’s greatest magicians from the Middle Ages through the 1950s Magic has enchanted humankind for millennia, evoking terror, laughter, shock, and amazement. Once persecuted as heretics and sorcerers, magicians have always been conduits to a parallel universe of limitless possibility—whether invoking spirits, reading minds, or inverting the laws of nature by sleight of hand. Long before science fiction, virtual realities, video games and the internet, the craft of magic was the most powerful fantasy world man had ever known.

Don Scardino’s The Incredible Burt Wonderstone is the latest magician comedy to have been released a decade too late. Burt Wonderstone is a middling comedy effort that provides a few good chuckles, but mostly feels dated, irrelevant and often-times too reliant on Jim Carrey’s over-the-top turn as the “new school” magician versus Steve Carell and Steve Buscemi’s old school magician mentality. I’ve seen much worse, but I’ve also seen much better.
Burt Wonderstone (Steve Carell) and Anton Marvelton (Steve Buscemi) have always wanted to be magicians. They became friends in their early childhood years and went on to be a successful duo on the Las Vegas strip. Sadly, Wonderstone has fallen into the glitz and glamour of the famous life and instead of acknowledging that their fan base is shrinking he simply chooses to rehash the same nightly gig over and over until it’s too late.

Magic, like many of the arts, seems to ebb and flow through our culture with its impact and essence growing and shrinking in importance from year to year. Of course, magic probably does far more of the latter. There was a brief resurgence a few years ago with the likes of David Blaine and Criss Angel, but both men quickly became well-deserved punchlines, leaving magic to hole up in the last place on Earth that still sees it as, well, magical. But outside of Las Vegas? Ricky Jay is one of a very select few who’ve not only made a living from their magic-related interests but also found success beyond the stage. (Penn & Teller are two more, but after that I’m stumped unless you count David Copperfield’s brief foray into acting with Terror Train. Which you shouldn’t.) Jay’s incredible sleight-of-hand skills, fascination with history, sharp sense of humor and distinctive voice have...

Rating: 3.5 out of 5 stars
With the Adam McKay-Will Ferrell stable of comedies grinding to a halt in the last few years, fans of dementedly off-colour comedy have endured something of a drought recently. Working from a script by Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley (yes, that’s Sam Weir from Freaks and Geeks), Steve Carell, Steve Buscemi and Jim Carrey manage to light up the screen with a wealth of uproarious moments, even if the 15 rating seems somewhat lost on material this mild.
Burt Wonderstone (Carell) and Anton Marvelton (Buscemi) have been friends since childhood and are now the top magic act in Las Vegas. However, a failed stunt that critically injures Anton causes the two to part ways, while an audacious street magician, Steve Gray (Carrey), looks set to take their coveted spot.
Burt must convince Anton to return to his side in order to reclaim both their title and their friendship.

Harry Houdini, who escaped from sealed coffins during his life, can't seem to find eternal peace inside one.
The final resting place of the master escape artist in Queens, N.Y., is hallowed ground to fans. But it's disputed territory for groups claiming a piece of Houdini's legacy and cemetery managers who mistrust others' intentions for the showman's burial spot.
Machpelah Cemetery's most famous resident once attracted so many visitors for an annual seance on Halloween -- the anniversary of Houdini's 1926 death -- that officials still close the grounds each Oct. 31 to stop acts of vandalism. Yet it's still a recurring struggle to scrounge up enough cash for upkeep at the Jewish cemetery. Even when the money's on hand, disagreements sprout over how to maintain Houdini's family plot.
