Brian De Palma’s largely forgotten rock musical Phantom of the Paradise quickly disappeared from theaters, a near-universal flop, when it was released in 1974. Except, for some reason, in the Canadian city of Winnipeg, where it was a blockbuster and developed an intensely devoted following that continues to this day. The cult is the subject of a new documentary from Sundance alum director Malcolm Ingram (Small Town Gay Bar, Continental) that’s just gone into production. Ph…...

Malcolm Ingram, director of the acclaimed, award-winning documentary "Small Town Gay Bar," is back with another film focusing on the Lgbt experience. "Out to Win" profiles a collection of athletes who have come out, and chronicles the history of Lgbt individuals in the world of professional sports. Included in the documentary from the looks of the trailer (posted below) are Jason Collins, the first openly gay person to play in the NBA, and Martina Navratilova, a lauded tennis player with 59 Grand Slam titles to her name. "The playbook is you come out a few years after you retire, and I didn't want that to be me," Collins explains in the trailer. Though the issue has been magnified in recent years with Collins and football star Michael Sam publicly coming out, "Out to Win" should shed a light on a severely-underreported experience in the world of athletics. Watch the trailer below.

Kirk Cameron took a detour on his normal route to bashing gays, blaming current church leaders and straights for ruining marriage. “When people get too focused on redefining marriage, you’re distracted from the bigger problem — fornicators and adulterers. If the people sitting in the pews are fornicators and adulterers, the church will destroy marriages much more quickly than those outside the church. When God’s people mock marriage, God doesn’t take that lightly. The church isn’t taking God’s definition of marriage seriously. It’s not other people sabotaging marriage that’s the problem.”

Everyone knows what to expect when they go into one of Kevin Smith’s signature Q&A one-man shows, but no one is quite so sure how they’ll feel once it’s over. Having watched other Smith specials, not all, I had a general expectation to hear some pretty hilarious and well told anecdotes concerning anything from dick and fart jokes to high-minded discussions of the film industry and really anything in between perhaps peppered with some vague advice or helpful recommendations, but Burn in Hell, the fifth installment in the Q&A specials, left me feeling absolutely awe-struck by the deep reverence for life and art and genuinely sage wisdom Smith possesses and shares with his loyal fans. Granted I’m a fan of Smith and his works (and a fellow New Jersey resident), but one doesn’t need to be to be affected by his words on stage.

Red State may be marketed directly at fans of Jay & Silent Bob but it's his most un-Kevin Smith film to date
Kevin Smith is recounting the time he told Harvey Weinstein to shut the fuck up. "I open the curtain at the back and I see Harvey outside, talking," recalls Smith. It was the premiere of his new movie Red State at the Sundance festival and Weinstein, his former boss and mentor, had promised to attend. But instead he was checking the American football scores. "He's talking about the Jets. Loud as fuck. The opening of my movie, first seven minutes. Old Kev just would have gone, 'Harvey, shh, movie's on.' But it disgusted me so much. It doesn't get much more heartbreaking. So I fuckin' lost it, and I went out and said, 'Hey. Shut the fuck up!' And he looked at me with fuckin' hate in his eyes.

Garry and Larry Lane at an idol of their idol
I first learned about Larry Lane earlier this year when I interviewed him after he and his twin brother won the campy reality show Wipeout (in terms of competition, it was, um, a wipeout). The world has long been fascinated by twins, and I figured our readers would be particularly interested in these twins, because they're gay (and because, um, they're cute).
And sure enough, you were.
At the time, Larry told me about a documentary he and twin brother Gary were working on that told their whole life story, centered around a trip they made to hand-deliver a script they'd written for their idol, Dolly Parton. In fact, they used their considerable prize money from Wipeout to buy the rights to use fourteen of Dolly's songs in the movie.

I don’t know if I’ve ever been struck so sharply as I was by this piece over at Bilerico.com, “Lady Gaga Is Not An Ally To Our Community.” Before you get up in arms, go read it. She’s not an ally, because she’s a member, and we need to remember to acknowledge that.
Jake Gyllenhaal has shaved his head for a new cop movie. He pulls the look off, and not everyone can. I know I can’t and for me the best part of boot camp was that everyone looks as ridiculous as you do.
Twitter has signed a new lease that keeps the headquarters in San Francisco after the city council passed a break in the payroll tax.

Fresh off the presses, our Sundance correspondent Kabelson has just sent over a transcript of the Q&A session for Kevin Smith's controversial film Red State (review here). Dig it!
Smith: Hi everybody. How’s everyone doing this morning? (cheers and applause) I’ll tell ya what, last night was a crazy night. Woke up this morning (1/24), I was like “Honey what did we do?”. She let me read a bunch of shit, I was like “Oh fuck no!” It was fun, last night we announced something we’ve been planning for a while. We are distributing Red State ourselves under SModcast Pictures. Like the movie style in the old days, like Gone With the Wind, take it from city to city to city. That’s the first part of it, for me, I am sure a lot of people took what I did the wrong way, and I...

Our parent company Logo recently aired this documentary about bear men and their fans and made it available for us to post here. Called Bear Nation, this production is not to be confused with another movie we recently reviewed called Bear City.
Seems like there's a whole lot of interest in bears recently!
Anyway, this doc was produced by the same folks who did Small Town Gay bar and includes a number of interviews with big and burly gay men – and the guys who love them. (Honorary bear Kevin Smith even makes an appearance.)
Bear fans enjoy!

NBC’s Outlaw has put filming new episodes on hold. Friday night is tough, and if it can’t improve on those ratings, it’s probably done for. The bright side? For all the already canceled and nearly canceled shows this fall, we still haven’t lost a gay character!
One small grace coming out of the epidemic of suicides: Exodus has decided it might be too much to hold their Day of Truth, the opposition to Day of Silence. Could the ex-gay folks have finally found their hearts? Or are they worried how that would look?
Showtime has renewed The Real L Word for another year. I’ve never watched it, so I don’t know if this is good news or not.
I can’t really make up my mind about this article. The text itself isn’t bad, but the title, Homophobia Hurts Straight Men Too seems just a little indulgent.

Someone finally stood up in Twitter-Wood Tuesday to counter Brett Ratner's rave reviews of "Catfish." You'll have to read on down to find out who it was, but the Monday-Tuesday window in our feed turned out to be a popular one for the critics to show up.
The first episode of the new "Hawaii Five-0" series caught some attention and at least one comparison to "Con Air," while Bristol Palin had fellow flyers clamoring to watch "Dancing With the Stars" at the airport where Patton Oswalt was hanging out. Check out what he thought about that, who wished Bill Murray a happy birthday and who's been getting prepped in case they ever make a Shake Weight movie after the jump.

Director: Malcolm Ingram Featuring: Bob Mould and Kevin Smith Somewhat of a follow up to Small Town Gay Bar, Malcolm Ingram takes us inside the world of Bear Nation, a sub-culture within the gay community. These large, hairy, gay men have created a little slice of heaven for themselves, complete with magazines and conventions dedicated to their girthy physique and cuddly personalities. In addition, Ingram touches upon the prejudice that still permeates society concerning gay culture, and the misconceptions straight folks have concerning the gay community. Bear Nation has many hilarious moments, with Ingram interviewing a slew of bears who touch upon their experiences, including how they began traveling down the road to bear worship. Said bears also make it a point to separate themselves from others in gay society, particularly “Twinks,” another sub-culture characterized by pronounced feminine qualities and a lack of body hair. In addition, there are a...

MattCanada here with a bit of an overview and Best-Of Gay films for the last decade.
Gay cinema over the last ten years has been intrinsically tied to both the political gains made by gay activists and the intense battles surrounding everything from the worldwide fight for gay marriage to nationally specific issues like America's Dadt and Doma, and Britain's repeal of Section 28. The relationship between the political and the cinematic is always most pronounced in the medium's relationship to minority groups and their texts.
The Aughts have seen gay-rights become the most visible"social values" issue in America, and this has been reflected in a number of high profile American films dealing frankly, sexually, and politically with what it means to be gay in America. Milk, Far From Heaven, and Mysterious Skin employ gay filmmaking traditions, like those of Affirmation Documentaries (Richard Dyer's term), Sirkian melodrama, and New Queer Cinema,...

Have a question about gay male entertainment? Ask the Monkey! (Please include your city and state and/or country.)
Q: Regarding that, um, interesting scene of Kirk (Chris Pine) in his underwear in the new Star Trek: since the movie supposedly takes place in the 22nd century, that's presumably what men will be wearing then, right? So where can I get the underwear of the future ... today? -- Steve, Philadelphia, Pa
A: Personally, the Flying Monkey is holding out hope that the not-so-distant future will see a return to the simple beauty that is a pair of tighty-whities, but I suppose I should just be thankful that the new Smokin' Hot Kirk wasn't wearing saggy, baggy boxers.
Unfortunately, the undies worn by Smokin' Hot Kirk in the movie were made of pure Romulan silk and were created by the Edoian designer Rakop in the year 2250. In other words, they don't actually exist yet.

Oh, brother! Or — more specifically — gay brother.
More and more celebrities are speaking openly about their gay siblings. Fantastic Four flamer Chris Evans was merely the latest, setting the blogosphere on fire earlier this month when he revealed in the latest issue of The Advocate that his look-alike brother, Scott, is gay. “They’re the funniest people I know,” Chris said of his bro and his gay friends.
But why wouldn’t lots of celebrities have gay brothers? If we’re “everywhere,” wouldn’t that include being part of a family with a famous member?
Not surprisingly, many of these same celebrities are also speaking out in favor of Glbt rights, pointing to their family members as examples of the real people involved in gay-related political debates. Many celebrities cite specific lessons they’ve learned from their queer brothers, about gay matters and other things.
