The one with the Sonogram at the end
ComedyFan20105 June 2011
Warning: Spoilers
This episode continues with introducing characters, this time the supportive ones. We get to know Ross's ex wife Caron and her new girlfriend Susan, Ross's and Monica's parents and Barry

They put more into lesbian ex wife story by making Carol pregnant and creating a complicated situation for Ross.

One of the most hilarious scenes is that where Judy and Jack Geller are having a dinner with Monica and Ross. Special credit for this goes to Elliot Gould (Jack Geller) and the authors of the script. Cortney Cox also shines in this scene and we really get to know a lot about Monica's and Ross's childhood in a pretty short time

The One we discover that Ross will become a dad
Lady_Targaryen20 October 2007
Warning: Spoilers
In the second episode, we discover that Ross and his ex wife Carol are going to become parents. Ross is invited by Carol to go to the sonogram with her and Susan. He goes, but as soon as he arrives in the place, he and Susan starts to have a discussion about the baby's name and last-name.

We see for the first time Monica's and Ross' parents (And we discover how annoying they can be!) who almost makes Monica have breakdown. (They make her feel bad all the time!)

Rachel decides to give her beautiful engagement ring back to Barry. When she arrives in his clinic, she sees that he changed his looks for the better, and eventually discovers that Barry is going out with Rachel's friend and maid of honor Mindy.

Phoebe tells she has a twin sister, and we see that Ross still has feelings for Rachel.

This second episode continues the pace of the previous episode , focusing on issues of broken relationships of Ross and Rachel . While Ross gets a bombshell Carol , his lesbian ex - wife, Rachel must confront Barry , her boyfriend was left at the altar , and deliver the wedding . Parallel Monica gets her parents in her apartment for a family dinner , but gets nervous about facing your critics and has the support of Ross to divide the attention of their parents . The episode begins in Central Perk , where the group of friends discuss the importance that women give to kiss in counterpoint to highlight that men give sex . Interesting is to check the first appearance of Gunther , but no speech, only appears as an extra in Central Perk .

Everyone has on the same clothes in the beginning of the episode as they had on in the ending of the episode of "The One with the Thumb" S1-E3

Very entertaining

Warning: Spoilers
Poor Ross is forced to deal with another curveball coming his way. Not only is his ex wife Carol a Lesbian, but she's now pregnant, with Ross being the Father. Ross is offended that they want to name their child after Carol & her Lesbian lover's name. Meanwhile, Monica is forced to entertain her parents for the night, and stresses out Monica. Monica is desperate to get the attention off of her for a change from her parents. Rachel chooses to return her engagement ring back to her ex fiancé Barry (The man she decided to split on at the altar) Rachel expects a teary goodbye, but finds out that Barry is in love with the made of honor Mindy. This was pretty enjoyable stuff. I leaned towards Monica's situation the most. My Mother doesn't understand me either, and is rather snooty, just like Monica's Mom is. The focus is always on me when I visit, so I really felt for Monica in this one. It was also starting to show the signs that made this show such a classic. It takes a dig at another famous sitcom Three's Company, essentially saying every episode is the same, in a different way. I'm a Three's Company fan myself, but it was admittedly funny. The Ross & Rachel saga also began to heat up just a tad in this one. You can tell things were going to pick up with those two at the end. This is a really fun episode. Friends fans will enjoy it very much

Strong episode.
ammabee-956-92704321 June 2015
Although this episode is not the best. It still did it's job. It's what you would expect when it's about the worst character : Ross (in my opinion.) but, even he did well. The best characters were probably Monica & Ross's parents in this one. But Ross held the episode strong with his main plot. MVP : Judy/Jack Geller. Quotes : "Judy Geller: Well, at least she had the chance to leave a man at the altar. Monica Geller: What's that supposed to mean? Judy Geller: Nothing. It's an expression. Monica Geller: No, it's not. Jack Geller: Don't listen to your mother. You're independent and you always have been. Even when you were a kid, and you were chubby and you had no friends, you were just fine! And your'd read alone in your room, and your puzzles..."

Parental panic
mattiasflgrtll612 November 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Ross's ex-wife makes an unexpected visit to announce something which results in complicated emotions, Monica feels inferior when her parents come to visit and Rachel bookends a failed relationship.

There are already signs of improvement in the series' second outing. For example there's a better balance between the characters. Everybody gets at least a few funny lines, including Phoebe and Rachel who were on the weaker side comedically the first time around. I love Phoebe's response when Monica is trying to find her engagement ring. It's the kind of answer that makes sense, but at the same time is obviously not the one she was asking for.

Joey also continues to be his lovably dopey self, while Chandler proves to be so charismatic and witty I can definitely see how he became such an everlasting character. He was amusing in the pilot, but here he steals the show every time he speaks. Him excitedly telling everyone "Let's dig in!" as they all go looking for the ring in the lasagna, the sad revelation that his parents liked his imaginary friend more than their own son and his sarcastic remarks towards Monica as she's cleaning frantically are some of the moments that stood out. I don't want to make this too much about one actor, but there's definitely something special and likable about Matthew Perry's performance.

Monica gets some solid character building as we're introduced to her OCD as well as shown how her parents treat her with a minimal amount of respect at best and scathing criticism at its worst. Jack does make more of an effort to be nice, but Judy's only compliment is the pot of curry tasting like curry. You feel so bad for Monica, while simultaneously laughing at the parents' bizarre quirks. Even when Ross steps up and tells about something that happened to himself, Judy still berates her daughter for keeping it from them! I can tell I will have a lot of fun whenever these two appear.

The main story centers on Ross, who gets to deal with a lot of anguish when his ex-wife Carol announces that she's pregnant. What's interesting to note is that besides one slightly ignorant comment towards the start, his main problem with Carol isn't that she's in a lesbian relationship, but rather that she and Susan are having a baby together he was never told about. Not to mention they've already decided on a name for the child, no matter if it's a boy or a girl. It brings a level of nuance to his characterization, since the feeling of being left in the dark is something that is easily relatable. The debate he has with them over the first and last name is hilarious, and the kind of convo that edges on being ludicrous, yet at the same time you can see where he's coming from. And we get a rather sweet resolution when the doctor broadcasts the sonogram, which stops the three of them dead in their tracks as they observe the wonder of a life in progress. What could possibly be more important than witnessing your offspring about to make their first leap into the world?

The subplot with Rachel is a continuation of the first episode, where we saw her leave husband-to-be Barry at the altar. The added context really helps give a full picture of the situation, and as she visits the dental clinic to give back the engagement ring it becomes apparent that he wasn't such a catch to begin with. Not only did it take little to no time for him to move on, but he has already remarried with Rachel's best friend Mindy, who was her maid of honor at the wedding. Wow, what a grade-A jerk.

Oh, and there's a boy in the dentist chair who Barry's taking care. He and Rachel had some funny exchanges with each other.

However, while Aniston does perform slightly better she still falters compared to the rest of the cast. Besides a couple of decent deliveries, her comedic timing hasn't quite gotten quite there yet. Just like before though she continues to play the dramatic material well. The conversation she and Ross have at the end as they contemplate over the disappointing directions their lives have taken and they wistfully wonder if true love really exists or there's something more exciting than a thankless café job. Given the info we've been given so far, we're aware whose heart has caught Ross's attention.

Considering the important groundwork lain along with the sharp humor throughout, I'm surprised this episode isn't talked about more fondly.

The One Where Ross Is Going To Be A Dad...
taylorkingston31 October 2014
Warning: Spoilers
I really like this episode. It's really funny. The only thing that annoys me is when they change actors or actresses. In this episode, the woman who plays Carol isn't the woman who plays her in every other episode, from this one on.

In this episode, Rachel is still getting on her own two feet and decides to give Barry, her ex- fiancé, his ring back. When she goes to return it, she found out that Barry went on their honeymoon with Rachel's Maid Of Honor, Mindy. I can clearly say that, that friendship is over. Monica and Ross's parents come over for dinner and that makes Monica really stressed. Her mother is very critical of her. Everything she does good, her mother points out the bad. How rude. At the end of the episode, Ross finds out that Carol, his lesbian ex-wife is pregnant with his child. He gets very upset when he learns that Carol and her lover, Susan don't want to give the child his last name. But instead, give it their lasts names. That seems really rude. I mean, I don't like Ross, but for once, I'm on his side. Not only is that rude to cut him out of the name entirely, but to not even discuss it first, come on.

Overall, I give this episode a 7 out of 10.

Step Up from Pilot
hupholland20145 December 2014
Tour de force of nuance acting for David Schwimmer. Plays the role of an awkward post graduate academic and lovable social buffoon struggling to come to terms with the "real- world" with an understated charm despite the weak acting of the girl playing Carol and a ridiculously silly lesbian story-line straight out of the writing of Seinfeld, but done with far less irony or wit and far more emphasis on setting up a soap opera like story ark for the entire season to fall back on for countless emasculating jokes about Ross. The one liners are much punchier and satirical here, delivered with a stronger gusto than the pilot, especially by Matthew Perry. Elliott Gould and Christina Pickles make a great appearance as semi-neurotic parents overly obsessed with their children finding a permanent relationship and having kids. Shows more extensive attention to editing and tighter, more compact writing than the Pilot and Jennifer Anniston makes a dramatic leap in improving the range of her acting chops in the extended period of time between shooting the pilot and this episode.

The One With A Sweet Ending
devashishparnami20 November 2017
Warning: Spoilers
Let's just say there are so many better friends episodes than this one. I didn't find this funny. But still one should keep going with the series because it definitely gets better. The ending with the baby's ultra violet was very sweet and heart worming. The part with parents was cute too.

Drop In Quality From Pilot
slightlymad2214 November 2014
The second episode of "Friends" continues on from the pilot and continues to deals with Ross's broken marriage and Rachel's failed wedding.

It also introduces us to some more new characters, we meet Ross's ex wife Carol and her new lesbian partner Carol, Rachel's former fiancée Barry and also Ross and Monica's parents too. And interestingly we get our first look at Gunther, he doesn't speak, he is just in the background at Central Park and we hear about the "ugly naked guy" for the first time too.

It's a drop in quality from the pilot, but all the cast are a bit better. Elliot Gould knocks it out of the park as Ross and Monica's Dad.

We also have a new opening featuring several scenes from episodes mixed in with the original opening of the gang in the fountain.

James Michael Tyler's debut as Gunther
safenoe19 March 2024
Warning: Spoilers
I was a big fan of Friends for the first few seasons, but for some reason which I cannot explain to this day, I stopped watching it in 1998-1999 onwards, but still I enjoy reflecting on the early years of Friends and reading the imdb user reviews before the minimum word count was introduced. The One with the Sonogram at the End is the second episode of season one, and this is a landmark episode as it introduced James Michael Tyler, who sadly passed away in 2021, just after his appearance on Friends: The Reunion. James pretty much owned the screen as his character progressed, and that's one thing about Friends that I like.

This was very very enjoyable
jpapanone2 July 2021
Warning: Spoilers
I finished the last episode and then the reruns started back from the beginning.

I laughed multiple times and had a generally positive disposition through it.

I missed that in later seasons. I just finished season 10. I think I gave 1 episode in that season a 6. Everything else was lower. I hated watching season 10. Won't ever do that to myself again.

But this early Friends stuff...this is why I watched this show. Phoebe annoyed me first few seasons...but then gets less annoying...and then more annoying in a different way later on. But everyone was annoying in season 9/10.

Jack Geller was funny from the beginning.

"I'm not gonna tell you how much they spent on the wedding....... But 40 thousand dollars is a lot of money!"

To see how much they all strayed from this...how much the writing strays...so sad.

Ha. Viewership goes up, ad dollars and salaries go up....quality goes down.

I thought the pilot was just ok...but this is better than the pilot, I think.

Still flushing out the characters etc...so I wasn't expecting much on a rewatch. Pleasantly surprised.

Every scene doesn't have to get a laugh or be funny...or over the top funny.

That got worse and worse as the series died it's slow agonizing death.

It's better to not be funny...than to try and shoe horn in some funny where it does more harm than good.

Warning: Spoilers
This episode introduces more of the characters we'd learn to love over the course of the show, and begins the deep delve into the complex triangular relationship Ross has with his ex-wife, Carol, and her female partner. Great episode all around.
