Classic TV Xmas Countdown Episode #12
kgraovac20 December 2023
Oliver is frustrated because none of the other Hooterville residents seem to understand his desire for an old fashioned country Xmas, and he will face a fine if he chops down his own Xmas tree.

Not as great as some of the regular series' episodes, but it was nice they did an Xmas show. I like the opening flashback scene -- a pleasant change of pace seeing the Douglases in New York with Lisa in her element. Were colored Xmas trees really that big a thing in the mid-Sixties? That was a large plot point in the NY segment. THE LUCY SHOW did the same thing the year before.

Lisa is making "fruitscake" for Xmas and the base is her regular hotscakes batter. She is winging it because Oliver hid her cookbook. Mr. Haney arrives showing off his new musical necktie. Oliver thinks it's ridiculous - little does he know Lisa will end up buying him one for Xmas.

At Drucker's store, Oliver runs into Fred Ziffel and is disgusted by Sam's wares: aluminum trees, wax popcorn and fiberglass candy canes ("YOU suck 'em, not me!"). Mrs. Ziffel is the only one who thinks Oliver has the right idea. Arnold is scared of the Xmas tree. We see Hank Kimball and Eb, but no Alf and Ralph in this one.

**SPOILERS** The ending is very cute but as zany as you'd expect. It's snowing! Even though it was 81 degrees outside. Lisa cries "Xmas is the perfect time for miracles!". Cut to Mr. Haney on the roof "Imagine a wife giving her husband a bag of soap flakes for Xmas". FADE OUT.

I like this one. It has all the typical GREEN ACRES wackiness and still manages to be a little bit sentimental. 8/10.

Warning: Spoilers
Even when he was in New York, Oliver despised fake Christmas trees. Now that he's on a farm, he looks forward to having an old fashioned real tree. Only he discovers that a conservation law makes it illegal for him to cut down a Christmas tree without a permit! The rest of the Hootervile population seems happy with their fake plastic trees--except for Mr. Ziffel who still prefers the old fashioned kind--aluminum trees!

In the end, everyone gathers at the Douglas home to enjoy Christmas eve (we also learn that as bachelors, Mr. Drucker and Mr. Kimball always spend Christmas eve together)--but then beat feet when Lisa unveils her Christmas fruit cake! Two of the highlights of this episode involve Oliver giving his "backbone of America" farmer speeches but mixed in with the fife is a bit of jingle bells and other Christmas flavoring, courtesy of Mr. Vic Mizzy.
